Politics / IBB Speaks About Gang Up With Obasanjo And Others Against by Ojpharz(m): 9:10pm On Jul 28, 2018
Former military president, General Ibrahim Babangida, has denied any gang-up against President Muhammadu Buhari by former President Olusegun Obasanjo, General Theophilus Danjuma and himself.

General Babangida, who ruled Nigeria from August 27, 1985 to August 26, 1993, made the declaration on Tuesday at his Hilltop Mansion in Minna, the Niger State capital, in an interview with The Crest, an online newspaper, a part of which was released Friday night.

The former military president was asked to react to the soaring notion that some past heads of state and retired Generals have ganged up and mapped strategies to upstage President Buhari and his party, the All Progressives Congress (APC), in the 2019 general election.

“Gang up?” General Babangida asked. “What gang-up? That is a media creation. It is media perception. It is easier for the media to add things up and conclude. I think what has happened is that after General Danjuma said what he said [about the alleged genocide in his home state of Taraba and the need for his people to defend themselves because the military had failed to protect them], after President Obasanjo released his letter, and perhaps, after my release too, the media simply added things up and came to the conclusion that there is a gang-up. There is no gang-up. It is media perception,” Babangida said.

He also took a critical look at the gale of defections from the ruling APC to the main opposition party, the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), and declared that the development was great for Nigeria’s democracy.

After watching the coverage of the defection of 14 senators live on national television with the former president, The Crest said it asked him what he felt about the development and Babangida replied in four words: “This is political dexterity.”

Asked to expatiate, he declared: “I call it political dexterity because there are no better words to describe it. This is political dexterity and I don’t think anybody should have any problems with that. I have nothing against it. I think it is good for democracy. If it is good for democracy, then, it is good for Nigeria.

“If people left the APC to form R-APC [Reformed All Progressives Congress], they must have a solid reason or reasons for doing that. If 12 senators got to a point where they felt their continued stay in APC was not working and decided to leave, there is absolutely nothing wrong with that. Similarly, if the other two senators felt that their stay in APC was no longer worth their while and decided to join the ADC [African Democratic Congress], they have not committed any crime.

“I think the development is good for democracy. Democracy is about choices; it is about the freedom to choose. In the democratic system that we practise, you can always disagree if you feel what you see in the system does not agree with your expectation.”

Politics / Nigerians Youths Urged To Vote Sowore As President by Ojpharz(m): 10:34pm On Jul 27, 2018
Nigerian youths urged to vote for Sowore

Ahead of the 2019 Presidential election, Nigerian youths of diverse ethnic and religious backgrounds have been asked to vote for radical journalist, Mr Omoyele Sowore.
In a statement issued in Zamfara on Friday, the South West Progressive Youth Coalition, (SWPYC) said youths, by their population have the power to create a paradigm shift in the 2019 Presidential poll. The statement was signed by the group’s National Coordinator, Mr Yomi Peter Ogunsona. The statement was made available to Irohinoodua on Friday.
The group which is a coalition of 35 different youth-driven organisations, mainly in the South West said Nigeria has continued to suffer the double affliction of ‘corruption and exclusion of young people from governance.”
He said “Youths constitute 60 percent of Nigerian population. We should take a clue from what took place in France. Nigerians must put an end to the cycle of leaders that have been on the same stage for half a century. Nigerians need a new beginning. We need a new orientation. We need a sharp break from the past.”
SWPYC said youths in the country have been ‘blackmailed, abused, attacked by the anti-people policies’ of the government and also excluded from changing the system from its ugly shape.
He said Sowore has been spreading messages of hope across Nigeria and that the responses from younger people “have been quite amazing.”
According to him, across the country, inspite of the ethnic and religious differences, one thing is prevalent: Poverty and illiteracy. “The greatest inventions in the world are products of human imagination. There can be nothing more destructive than for a leadership to condemn the human mind to illiteracy. This is a fertile ground for violence, drug abuse and evil plots against the society itself.
He said more than 70 percent of Nigerians have no access to quality education, free health and opportunities to develop their potentials.
Ogunsona said Mr Sowore offers hope for Nigerians who are daily traumatise by a parasitic economy, corruption and dehumanization. He said the people ruling Nigeria are outdated and are not in tune with the modern times saying that their leadership style has further polarise the country
“We cannot continue to vote for leaders that have no fresh ideas, but have constrained themselves to repeating the policies of discrimination, hate, corruption and gross maladministration.”
According to him, Sowore is a revolutionary brand that will reunite Nigerians and bring revive the floundering fortunes of the country.

Politics / No Man Of Honour Will Return To PDP Says By Adams Oshiomhole by Ojpharz(m): 7:48am On Jul 26, 2018
The National Chairman of the All Progressives Congress, Adams Oshiomhole, on Monday said there was no man of honour, who left the Peoples Democratic Party because of its alleged crimes against the nation, that would want to return to the opposition party.

He insisted that he was not losing sleep over the emergence of a faction of the party called Reformed-APC.
He said no matter their irritations in the ruling party, no aggrieved member should be thinking of returning to the PDP.

He said, “No, I am not losing sleep. I am sleeping very well. I still maintain that I don’t see any man of honour who with his eyes open left the PDP on the account of their gross mismanagement, abuse of the treasury and all of the crimes that the PDP committed; I don’t see them, whatever their irritations, that can be justifications, to return to that house.

“All we need to do is to play back their own tape about what the PDP represents and why they left. I still hold the view that you cannot vomit in the morning and convert it to lunch in the afternoon, if you have honour. That position still remains the same.”

Despite his position, Oshiomhole explained that the party could distinguish between those who had genuine complaints and those he described as mercenaries.

He said the party would try and listen to those with genuine grievances but would not change its core values to accommodate the mercenaries who he said were after personal issues.
