Tinubu was honoured with an honorary PhD. by Adeleke University. Serubawon and Dr. Deji were there. Demola was dancing away his life back then.
Tinubu's Politics is not about personal feelings. It's about personal interests. He's gonna step on many toes to get his reelection. |

That Abuja Vicar should be sanctioned heavily and transferred to Etegbin. Why should he be transferred to Etegbin and not Umuahia, Onitsha or Awka? As for a new diocese in Ojo or Festac, it's not up to you to decide. The church leadership knows what is best and they will do it. |

Politics › Re: Calling Prof Wole Soyinka A Tribal Bigot Is Callous by OkayDaddy: 3:15pm On Jun 16, 2025 |
aremubabs: What do you mean Chinua Achebe deserved the year 2000 prize?
In year 2000, Chinua Achebe had not published anything since 1988 when he published his last novel "Anthills of the Savanna".
You expect the Nobel committee to overlook active writers and give it to someone whose last book was published 12 years ago.
When Soyinka won the Prize in 1986, Chinua Achebe had not published anything new in 20 years. His last novel at the time was "A Man of the People" published in 1966.
While Achebe was inactive, Soyinka was publishing every year.
Gao, who won the Prize in 2000, is not well-known in his native China, but being also French, he is well celebrated in Europe.
Many Nobel prize winners are usually not commercial successes like Chinua Achebe. It doesn't mean they are obscure. There are those who read them and they usually belong to a class of readers who value profound writings.
Chinua Achebe was a great storyteller, but he struggled as a writer.
Imagine a novelist of his fame could only boast of 5 novels in his entire lifetime. How could someone who was inactive most of his writing life be awarded a Nobel Prize in a world where there are writers churning masterclasses nearly every year?
Even Soyinka who is not primarily a novelist has as many novels as Achebe. In his genre (play), Soyinka wrote over 30 plays.
The fact is Achebe was not in the same class as many of his contemporaries. He was clearly inferior. The only thing he had going for him was the success of just one of his books, "Things Fall Apart". He lived in the shadow of that book until his death while other writers like Mahfouz, Gordimer, Coatzee, Gurnah were publishing powerful books and winning the Nobel Prize. His only day strength was his role as editor of the African Writers Series through which he helped many writers, including Wole Soyinka and Nadine Gordimer, to get published. This role earned him the title of "Father of African Literature."
A very lame title, considering that he only wrote novels. He wrote poems too, but no one regards his poems.
Father of African literature with only 5 novels. For context, Chukwuemeka Ike published close to 15 novels. And they were widely praised. Shouldn't he too have won the Nobel Prize?
What about Ben Okri who is way more profound and prolific than Chinua Achebe?
If any Nigerian writer should have won it after Soyinka, it wouldn't have been Achebe, as he never deserved it.
Ben Okri, Femi Osofisan, Niyi Osundare, JP Clark are some writers who would have won it ahead of Achebe. Considering that music is poetry with rhythm and sound, even Portable is better than Chinua Achebe. |

SeeWahala: Soyinka backstabbed all well meaning Nigerians when he went to receive that novel prize after agreeing to boycott the ceremony due to the happenings at the time.
Everyone ekse stayed back but he alone sneaked off to steal the prize just as his kinfolk are known to do till this very day.
2faced and backstabbing turncoats never end well in life When did Soyinka agree to boycott the Nobel? The some Nobel Achebe begged for severally and never got. The same award that you are crying that Soyinka got is what Achebe spent his latter years chasing and never got. When he got into an accident, his kinsmen were blaming Soyinka just as you are. He died frustrated and GEJ made sure he was unrecognized. |

Better grow out of this tribalism. IN my life, a lot of people who have been good to me, a guy from a minority tribe, have been Igbos and Yorubas.
If you want to waste your life on online bigotry, continue.
I still stand by what I said, and I read both writers and many more. Did you see me mention Igbo or Yoruba in my post? I said literature has Prose Poetry and drama. How did Achebe fare in poetry and drama? You started crying. |
Politics › Re: Calling Prof Wole Soyinka A Tribal Bigot Is Callous by OkayDaddy: 3:03pm On Jun 16, 2025 |
nairalanda1: Achebe is as good as Soyinka. Soyinka deserved his price, but Achebe deserved the 2000 prize...someone who has been published in several languages, and can tell an engaging story like Soyinka....yet he lost to a obscure chinese author. Which Achebe? Achebe is a storyteller, not a literary genius. He told his stories just how the white colonialists saw Africa. That's why he never won a Nobel. Go check out Soyinka's books. They open your brain and blockheads can't understand them. There's his book, The Interpreters. Mad book. If you read without eating, you can run mad. Literature has Prose Poetry and drama. How did Achebe fare in poetry and drama? Yet you are comparing him to Soyinka. |
