Business / Mastercard 14bn Pounds Overcharge Legal Action Fails by okoyeodira: 4:27pm On Oct 12, 2017
A 14bn pounds class action lawsuit against mastercard has been thrown out by the competition appeal tribunal.
The former financial ombudsman,Walter Merricks, had claimed that 46 million consumers had been overcharged by mastercard over a 16-year period.
But the court ruled that the case could not proceed through a collective-or class-action.
The ruling was welcomed by mastercard, which said the claims were completely unsuitable.
The tribunal found that even if a loss had been suffered, and could be estimated across the whole class, there was no way any individual could receive compensation equal to the loss that he or she had actually suffered.
The case was filed in september 2016,and followed a European Court of Justice [ECJ] ruling against the level of so-called interchange fees-the amounts that retailers have to pay on debt and credit cards.
It related to the fees charged by mastercard between 1992 and 2008.
''We welcome the competition Appeal Tribunal's Judgement refusing certification'',said a spokesperson for mastercard.
''As set out in mastercard's arguments to date,we believe that the claims were completely unsuitable to be brought under the collective actions regime''.
Interchange fees have since been capped by the European Union.

Car Talk / Audi Car Diesel Emissions For 850,000 Cars by okoyeodira: 1:14pm On Oct 12, 2017
Audi is the latest German carmaker to offer a free software upgrade for its diesel vehicles in an effort to improve the vehicle's emissions.
Thousands of luxury British vehicles are to be recalled amid a scandal over 'fake' emission results.
Mercedes was the first manufacturer to offer a software upgrade to three million of their cars earlier this week.
Almost every diesel model mercedes-benz sold in Britiain over the past six years is believed to be affected.
The upgrades are expected to cost the German car firm 195million pounds.
Audi's software emissions upgrade is targeted towards its luxury top-and estate, saloon and suv models.
The recall affects cars fitted with six-and eight-cylinder [v6 and v8]diesel motors meeting the Euro 5 and Euro 6 emissions standards.
According to some sources, models built by porsche and volkswagen are also set to be recalled.
Official figures by Audi reveal how many British cars will be affected have not yet been confirmed.

Investment / US Pakistan Aid by okoyeodira: 11:57am On Oct 12, 2017
WAshington:The Trump administration notified congress on wednesday that it was putting $255million in military assistance to Pakistan into the equivalent of an escrow account that Islamabad can only access if it does more to crack down on internal terror networks launching attacks on neighbouring Afghanistan.
The dueling messages sent to Pakistan-promoting aid but attaching strings if the country's counter terror efforts fall short-are part of an increasingly confrontational in an alliance that has been strained.
The United States has provided Pakistan more than $33billion in aid since 2002.But the annual funding has declined in recent years as Washington became increasingly disenchanted with Pakista's quiet support for the Haqqani network and the Taliban, whose attacks have been responsible for the deaths of American troops in Afghanistan.
Still,American officials have long recognized that Pakistan has tried to crack down on terror groups, and PALYS AN IMPORTANT ROLE FACILITATING supply shipments to the United States military in Afghanistan.
Last week,in announcing his new strategy for the war in Afghanistan, president Trump excoriated Pakistan.
State Department officials said that Mr Trum's promised changes would bring explicit conditions on military aid.once Pakistan more aggressively pursues the Taliban and Haqqani network, the aid will be released -a determination to be made by secretary of state Rex.W. Tillerson, officials said.
Last week,Mr Tillerson suggested that the United States's patience with Pakistan was nearing a breaking point.
Critics of American aid to Pakistan said the administration was still not being tough enough.
The $255million in military assistance was the largest portion of $1.1billion in aid authorized by congress in 2016 that also included money for counter narcotics operations and health initiatives.if the state department had failed to notify congress in the next few weeks of its intention to spend the money,it would have been returned to the United States Treasury.
Rather than lose such a carrot,Trump administration officials said they wanted to use the money as incentive for Pakistan to change its behavior.By effectively putting the funds into escrow, the Trump adminstration also allows its own ongoing review of its policy toward Pakistan to continue unaffected by aid concerns, official said wednesday.
The Obama administration tried to use the sale of eight new f-16 fighter jets to Pakistan in the same way to persuade Pakistan's government to better police its border with Afghanistan.congressional strings on the deal made it less attractive to Pakistan.
Mr.Trump's explicit call for India to become more engaged in Afghanistan demonstrated that Washington's long history balancing the two south Asian rivals has tipped in India's favor, which has deeply alarmed Islamabad.
But the Trump administration can afford to ignore Pakistan and its nuclear arsenal, which has served as a source for nuclear materials sent to Iran,North Korea and Libya.

Travel / Air Zimbabwe Cuts Its Workforce Due To Financial Woes by okoyeodira: 11:46am On Sep 22, 2017
zimbabwe's state-owned airline has laid off 200 workers, roughly half of its staff, with immediate effect.
the job losses are part of a turn around strategy to bring struggling air zimbabwe back to profitability from a $300m[230m pounds] debt.
last month the eu banned it from using its airspace, citing safety concerns.
there have been major changes at the national airline since president robert mugabe's son-in law took over as chief operating officer last year.

'struggling to keep afloat'
''we were overstaffed by a lot and we are also trying to weed out people without the right qualifications'',the airline's chairwoman chipo dyanda said on wednesday.
''the retrenchment is meant to give space to the airline so that can redeploy the money saved back into the company.
an air zimbabwe spokesperson told state media that management has also been trimmed from 28 to 12 and the finance department from 36 to 17.
the airline has struggled to keep afloat over the last decade and plans to carry out a restructuring exercise that will include retraining for all staff, including top management.
unconfirmed reports say that a name change is also in the pipeline-a move many people is an attempt to ring-fence the airline's debt and reduce the threat of creditors seizing the planes.
the bbc's shingai nyoka in harare says that president mugabe is a frequent flier on the airline, often leasing out the largest plane for state visits and private medical visits to the far east.
in may, president mugabe said that zimbabwe was the most-highly developed country in africa after south africa,he denied that the country was in a fragile state.
zimbabwe has been struggling to pay its civil servants recently and is ranked 24th on the undp's human development index for africa.

Politics / September 11 Attacks Anniversary by okoyeodira: 5:18pm On Sep 21, 2017
leading his first commemoration of the solemn 9/11 anniversary, president donald trump said that ''the living breathing soul of america wept with grief'' for each of the nearly 3,000 lives that were lost on that day 16 years ago.
addressing an audience at the pentagon, one of three sites attacked on sept.11,2001,trump used the anniversary to sternly warn terrorists that ''america cannot be intimidated ''.
he said those who try are destined to join a long list of vanquished enemies ''who dared to test our mettle''.
trump and first lady melania trump observed a moment of silence at the whitehouse on monday at the exact moment that a hijacked aeroplane was slammed into the world trade center.the trumps bowed their heads and placed their hands over their hearts as ''taps'' rang out across the south lawn.
they were surrounded by whitehouse aides and other administration officials in what has become an annual day of remembrance.
nearly 3,000 people were killed when hijackers flew commercial aeroplanes into new york's world trade center, the pentagon and a field near shanksville pennsylvania.
trump,a native new yorker who was in the city on 9/11,said the attack was worse than the japanese pearl harbor during world war 2 because it targeted civilians.
he vowed that it would never be repeated.
trump also offered words of comfort the many whose loved ones perished in the attacks.
trump has a checkered history with 9/11.he frequently uses the attack to praise the city's response has also made unsubstantiated claims about what he did and saw on that day.
trump often lauds the bravery of new york police fighters, fire fighters and other emergency responders who rushed to the twin towers to help as an example of the resilience of the city where he made a name for himself.

his family fear the person who ordered the murder may never be caught.
they say until then the case will not be solved.their lawyers believe senior figures with in chechnya who are loyal to the russian leader may be behind the killing.

in the court room
the small military courtroom was packed for the verdict, the men themselves in handcuffs inside a glass cage that soon began to steam up from the heat.
everyone stood as the judge took half an hour to read his verdict.
the five men were passive at first.then they smirked and laughed openly as their verdicts were announced.
they had made their final speeches to the court on wednesday.warning that people would ''answer'' for imprisoning them unjustly, and proclaiming that only allah would be their judge.

killer's 'confession'
dadayev is a former member of the elite northern battalion in the northern caucuses republic of chechnya,a unit that came under the command of chechen strongman ramzan kadyrov.
the court stripped dadayev of his rank of lieutenant and removed an earlier award for bravery.ranovosti,reported.although he confessed to the killing, russia's human rights council said that was likely to have happened under the torture.
two brothers, anzor and shadid gubashev, were jailed for 19 and 16 years respectively.while dadayev was said to have fired the gun, anzor gubashev was accused of driving him to and from the crime scene.
tamerlan eskerkhanov was given 14 years ans khamzat bakhayev 11.they and shadid gubashev were convicted of preparing the murder.

prosecutors said nemtsov's killer had been promised 15m roubles [$249,169.44] to carry out the killing.

Travel / Sint Maarten Jet Plane Crash Kills New Zealand Woman by okoyeodira: 11:18am On Sep 21, 2017
a new zealand woman has died on the caribbean territory of sint maarten after the blast from a powerful jet engine knocked her to the ground.
the incident happened at the famous juliana international airport, which is just metres from the beach.
beachgoers can walk up to the airport fence as planes take off.
police said the 57-year old woman had been holding on to the fence before the force of the jet engines threw her backwards, causing serious injury.
she was taken to hospital for treatment, but died later.

danger signs
the particular stretch of beach on the dutch territory is popular with tourists, partly because the planes fly extremely low over the sand before landing.
the beginning of the runway is just 50m [160ft] from the fence on maho beach, and about the same distance to the waterline.

what is a jet engine air blast like?
there are prominent warning signs in the area instructing beachgoers not to stand near the fence because of the dangerous air blasts.
despite the danger,a number of videos circulating online show tourists clinging to the fence to prevent being swept away-and in some cases, almost being lifted off the ground.

Health / Sleep by okoyeodira: 5:42pm On Sep 11, 2017
sleep is a naturally recurring state of mind and body, characterized by altered consciousness, relatively inhibited sensory activity, inhibition of nearly all voluntary muscles, and reduced interactions with surroundings.it is distinguished from wakefulness by a decreased ability to react to stimuli, but is more easily reversed than the state of being comatose.sleep occurs in repeating periods,in which the body alternates between two distinct modes known as non-rem and rem sleep.
although rem stands for ''rapid eye movement'',this mode of sleep has many other aspects, including virtual paralysis of the body.a well-known feature of sleep is the dream,an experience typically recounted in narrative form, which resembles waking life while in progress, but which usually can later be distinguished as fantasy.
during sleep, most of the body's systems are in an anabolic state, helping to restore the immune, nervous, skeletal, and muscular systems;these are vital processes that maintain blood memory, and cognitive performance and play a large role in the function of the endocrine and immune systems.the internal circadian clock promotes sleep daily at night.the diverse purposes and mechanisms of sleep are the subject of substantial ongoing research.the advent of artificial light has substantially altered sleep timing in industrialized countries.
humans may suffer from various sleep disorders, including dysosomnias, such as insomnia, hypersomnia, narcolepsy, and sleep apnea;parasomnias, such as sleepwalking and rem behaviour disorder, bruxism, and circadian rythm sleep disorders.

Foreign Affairs / Greek Spending To Be Lifted by okoyeodira: 4:00pm On Sep 11, 2017
the eu proposed disciplinary measures against greece when its deficit balloned after the financial crisis.
years of austerity have seen the country repair its finances and last year it posted a small budget surplus.
the european commissioner for economic affairs, pierre moscovia, said it was a ''very symbolic moment'' for greece.
member states still need to approve the ending of the so-called excessive deficit procedure.
greece is likely to be in deficit again in 2017,but it will be comfortably within the eu limit of 3% of gdp.
although the government's finances have improved, greece still has huge debts and many economists question whether the country will ever be able to pay them off.
the years of austerity have hurt the economy and contributed to an unemployment rate of 21.7% -the highest among european union member states.
the greek economy is expected to grow by 2.2% this year, above the eurozone average.if restrictions are lifted, the country will be able to resume selling government debt,or bonds.

Science/Technology / Giant Iceberg Splits From Antartic by okoyeodira: 2:21pm On Sep 11, 2017
the giant block is estimated to cover an area of roughly 6,000sqkm,that's about a quarter the size of wales.
a us satelite observed the berg on wednesday while passing over a region known as the larson ice shelf.scientists were expecting it.they 'd been following the development of a large crack in larsen's ice for more than a decade.
the rift's propagation had accelerated since 2014,making an imminent calving ever more likely.
the more than 200m-thick tabular berg will not move very far, very fast in the short term.but it will need to be monitored.currents and winds might eventually push it north of the atlantic where it could become a hazard to shipping.
an infrared sensor on the american space agency's aqua satelite spied clear water in the rift between the shelf and the berg on wednesday.the water is warmer relative to the surrounding ice and air-both of which are sub-zero.
''the rift was barely visible in these data in recent weeks, but the signature is so clear now that it must have opened considerably along its whole length'',explained prof adrian luckman, whose project midas at swansea university has followed the berg's evolution most closely.
the new larsen berg is probably in the top 10 biggest ever recorded.
the largest observed in the satelite era was an object called b-15.it came away from the ross ice shelf in 2000 and measured some 11,000sqkm six years later, fragments of this super-berg still persisted and passed by new zealand.

Business / Federal Reserve Raise Interest Rates by okoyeodira: 12:24pm On Sep 11, 2017
the us federal reserve announced it was raising short-term interest rates by a quarter percentage point on wednesday as the central bank continued to unwind the huge economic stimulus plan brought in after the great recession.
after a two-day meeting, the fed raised the target range of the federal funds rate from 1% to 2.5%,the third consecutive quarterly increase.the move follows a record run of jobs growth in the us that driven the unemployment rate down to its lowest level in 6 years.
''information received since the federal open market committee met in may indicates that the labor market has continued to strengthen and the economic activity has been rising moderately so far this year, the fed said in a statement.
the committee signaled that more rises were on the horizon and that it ''expects that economic conditions will evolve in a manner that will warrant gradual increases in the federal funds rate''.
the fed also put out a statement about its plans to unwind its gigantic bond portfolio, bought as part of its bid to restart the economy after the 2007-09 recession.
in the wake of that recession, the fed went on an enormous spending spree, buying its bonds in order to keep interest rates down and encourage spending to kickstart the economy.after three rounds of so-called quantitative easing, the fed acquired $4.5tn worth of bonds, including $1.8tn in mortgage securities.

Foreign Affairs / Turkey Protests by okoyeodira: 11:22am On Sep 11, 2017
the marchers are fighting turkey's erosion of democracy, the failed coup last july saw rogue soldiers bombing government buildings and riving tanks into civilians killing more than 260.
since then, over 50,000 people have been arrested and 140,000 dismissed or suspended.
there is a widespread feeling that the government has seized the chance to crush all opponents, not just alleged coup supporters.
among the marchers was ulas bayraktar,a former political science professor at mersin university in southern turkey.in april,he was fired by a government decree.
he was one of the 1,100 academics who had signed a petition calling on the government to cease armed conflict in kurdish-dominated areas-and paid the price for dissent.
a kilometre-long turkish flag was unfurled along the motor way, held aloft by participants for the final stretch of the way.
protests here have come and gone over the years and the opposition is notoriously fractured.but this simple movement has gained momentum, with a feeling that the marchers have finally found a positive and peaceful way to challenge an increasingly authoritarian government.
along the motorways and hills of the route between ankara and istanbul,a glimmer of optimism has been kindled.
for the organisers and the marchers, the task now is to build on it if they are to pave on alternative road ahead for turkey.

Business / Working In The Gig Economy by okoyeodira: 5:54pm On Sep 04, 2017
a gig economy is an environment in which temporary positions are common and organizations contract with independent workers for short-term engagements.
the trend toward a gig economy has begun.a study by intuit predicted that by 2020,40 percent of american workers would be independent contractors.
there are a number of forces behind the rise in short-term jobs.for one thing,in this digit age,the workforce is increasingly mobile and work can increasingly be done from anywhere,so that job and location are decoupled.that means that freelancers can select among temporary jobs and projects around the world, while employers can select the best individuals for specific projects from a larger pool than that available in any given area.
digitization has also contributed directly to a decrease in jobs as software replaces some types of work and means that others take much less time.other influences include financial pressures on businesses leading to further staff reductions and the entrance of the millenial generation into the workforce.the current reality is that people tend to change jobs several times throughout their working lives, the gig economy can be seen as an evolution of that trend.
in a gig economy, businesses save resources in terms of benefits, office space and training.they also have the ability to contract with experts for specific projects who might be too high-priced to maintain staff.from the perspective of the freelancer,a gig economy can improve work-life balance over what is possible in most jobs.ideally, the model is powered by independent workers selecting jobs that they're interested in,rather than one in which people are forced into a position where, unable to attain employment, they pick up whatever temporary gigs they can land.
the gig economy is part of a shifting cultural and business environment that also includes the sharing economy, the gift economy and the barter economy.

in 2016 dfid was taken to task with accusations of misappropriation of funding in the british overseas territory of montserrat.whistle blower sean maclauglin commenced legal action against the department in the eastern carribean court questioning the dfid fraud investigation process.
