Government is ideally not suited for direct agricultural production. 1. Corruption - Nigeria is a very corrupt country which attendant inefficiency and diversion of resources. It translates into inflated and increased costs of production. 2. Bureacracy - Farming is time bound and averse to government bureacracy or red tape. For farming to be sustainable, you need to do the right things at the right time. 3. Politics - Nigeria leaders have always used agricultural goods such as fertilizer etc to favour their political supporters who may end up selling the items instead of putting it to productive use. 4. Policy - Government have not been able to formulate and implement comprehensive that adequately address the constraints of farmers. Mostly wasteful empowerment programs done for political patronage. However, government can venture into farming indirectly by creatingenabling environment and supporting PPP, and farmers cooperatives and individuals. 1. PPP - Partner with companies or organizations with proven capacity in farming. Especially, mechanized agriculture to boost yield and enable profit. 2. Research - Government has to adequately fund research to address farming constraints. 3. Agric Extension - To bring useful research findings to farmers, agric extension needs to be properly funded. 4. Policies - Government has to formulate and implement sound economic policies to enable sustainable production and food security. If countries like Israel with arid desert land can be producing enough for it's population and even export, I don't see why Nigeria cannot. It boils down to leadership and utilization of resources. The concept of minimum wage in a country is different from what you've stated. It is aimed at improving standing of living, ensure economic stability in view of prevailing economic realities and poor purchasing power of wages. Nigeria has one of lowest minimum wage in West Africa despite the huge resources that is pilfered and diverted to personal use instead of the good of the country. States that can afford it should pay higher than the Federal minimum wage, but it should not only be for Federal Workers. na2016: |
