Christianity EtcRe: The Old Vs New Covenant - Revelation Of The New Covenant by olad2020:
I was at work having a similar discussion as this when my colleague argued that a reputable man of God on TV said paying of tithe is obedience to God. My response was does that mean Jesus, the Apostles and early Christians disobeyed God because there's no record that they paid tithe(NOT TAX OH). Then he couldn't respond.
I just laughed because I used to be in his shoes.

Where I have a problem is our spiritual leaders teaching christians to tithe. They go as far as saying 'you are robbing God', 'God won't bless you if you don't tithe' (abeg did Jesus & his apostles rob God? were they cursed or blessed?). They should follow the examples of the Apostles and teach GIVING not TITHING(GIVING was the teaching and practise of the early church which is the model for the body of Christ to follow(don't you agree...)

I wonder why christians don't ask themselves questions like if tithing WAS AS IMPORTANT as other things stretched in the new testament such as The Holy spirit, Evangelism, Fellowship, Spiritual Gifts, Sin, Holy communion etc Do you think God would have MADE A BIG MISTAKE not to stress tithing in the NT(after all the gentiles who diidnt have the law would need to have been told but there was NO MENTION even to the gentiles).

A lot of people bring up what Jesus told the Pharisees in Matt but haven't we establish the fact that Jesus was speaking in context of the pharisees who were still under the was since Jesus had not yet been crucified.

TEACH GIVING CHRISTIANS NOT TITHING! Follow the MODEL of the early christians, it was made for a reason!
Peace.

Christianity EtcRe: Why Tithing Is Not A Must For Christians by olad2020: 12:31am On Aug 20, 2013
Ken4Christ: Here Jesus instruction about giving in his encounter with a man who claims he has kept all the laws including tithing;

"And when he was gone forth into the way, there came one running, and kneeled to him, and asked him, Good Master, what shall I do that I may inherit eternal life? And Jesus said unto him, Why callest thou me good? there is none good but one, that is, God. Thou knowest the commandments, Do not commit adultery, Do not kill, Do not steal, Do not bear false witness, Defraud not, Honour thy father and mother. And he answered and said unto him, Master, all these have I observed from my youth. Then Jesus beholding him loved him, and said unto him, One thing thou lackest: go thy way, sell whatsoever thou hast, and give to the poor, and thou shalt have treasure in heaven: and come, take up the cross, and follow me. And he was sad at that saying, and went away grieved: for he had great possessions." (Mark 10:17-22)

If you think Jesus instruction was for that man alone, read this verse;

"Sell that ye have, and give alms; provide yourselves bags which wax not old, a treasure in the heavens that faileth not, where no thief approacheth, neither moth corrupteth." (Luke 12:33).
Here, he spoke in generic term.

This is the New Testament standard of giving. How many of us are doing it? If your Pastor comes to you and ask you to liquidate all you have and give the money to the poor, I am sure you will call him a fraudster.
(Mark 10:17-22)
1. This man comes to Jesus to ask how to get eternal life. Not a bad question but remember Jesus can see people's hearts (this is why he presents different questions to different people he meets based on their intent or belief).
2. Jesus lists some commandments, notice "NOT ALL". He is asking him about commandments that deals with how you treat people (he doesn't ask about the commandments that relate to our relationship with God e.h thou shalt have no other God, thou shalt not make an image etc).
3. The guy confirms he has followed the particular ones Jesus listed "religiously". He doesn't have a problem with his relationship with people. Next comes reveal about his relationship with God.
4. So Jesus tests his heart. Sell all you have Jesus tells this guy and follow me. The guy fails the test because he cant imagine trading his possessions for eternal life(this problem is relative to this guy in this context, it many not be money for others).

You have to understand what Jesus is trying to achieve in this context. What he wants to find out what is more important to this guy, money or God.

This story isnt necessarily about teaching us giving standards(some people can give without blinking smiley); rather its about figuring out if we are ready to be sold out to God even if it cost us [b]things we consider important like "worldly friends", tradition, sometimes money (if it is an idol in our lives), titles, pride, anger, bitterness, unforgiveness, greed etc.

Christianity EtcRe: ... by olad2020: 11:27am On Aug 18, 2013
Firstly, Christianity is not a Religion.

Secondly, being a Christian is not centred on Church attendance alone. Anybody can attend Church even the Devil. I wonder why Christians use attending Church as a measurement of a person's spiritual life. This is the reason why when we see someone who goes to church sin, we begin to wonder if its better to remain an unbeliever.

If by old time religion, you mean the early church. Then I agree with you that is the model Christians should follow I.e preaching the gospel, loving others, having a close knit christian fellowship, giving to those who lack, staying away from sin.

Whether we attend church or not(I say this cause we are the church not the physical building), if our lives don't follow the model of the early Christians, we need to check ourselves if we are truely living right with God.

God bless you Sir, you have not only taken time to do research, you have taken time to explain it in the simplest way for a layman to understand. You are a true Berian Christian.

From my study of the New Testament, Jesus and the Apostles never disturbed people on the issue of Tithe.

I hear many pastors say Jesus condemned the Phrases saying 'this you ought to do' etc. They have forgotten that when Jesus said that, he had not yet been crucified therefore he was speaking to people who were still under the law, who took pride in thinking they were self righteous because they paid tithe but neglected to do real things God counted as important. I see this attitude in a lot of Christians today who take pride in paying their tithes yet their attitude to their spouse, neighbours, job, staff etc is very bad.

Trust me tithing was so important, Jesus and his apostles would have stressed it the way he stressed soul winning.

We are encouraged in the new testament to give as christians out of love. The word 'giving' was stressed not tithing. There was no price tag on what much to give but we were taught to give cheerfully.

The Christians also focused on using the money they gave on welfare and
spreading the gospel. Their main focus was on the spiritual growth of the Church I.e building people spiritually and not building physical structures.

Also take note a lot of people will pay their tithe faithfully but still not make heaven. Such did Jesus warn saying 'I know ye not'.
