FELDSTAR FARM, A Subsidiary of Feldstar International Where your investment questions are answered regarding agriculture. With our team of experts and experienced personnel in the field of agriculture, you can ride your way to a desired end in agriculturally.

Read this articles.

With the downturn of our much relied-on oil and gas sector, Agriculture has taken a position of prominence in Nigeria’s economy making up about 20.49% of our total GDP in the first quarter of 2016 (National Bureau of Statistics). The demand for agricultural products both in Nigeria and the world at large will always be on the high side because food is one of the basic needs of man. Thus, as an entrepreneur, you can key into this demand and set up an agro business, creating enormous wealth for yourself. There are unlimited opportunities in the agricultural sector.
There are many reasons every young aspiring entrepreneur should look into agriculture. The most compelling reason I found is;
Nigeria is world’s highest importer of wheat. At the current growth rate Nigeria will be importing 17 million MT by 2020, the equivalent of the entire exports of the 3rd largest exporter, Canada. In addition to wheat and sugar, cassava can also be a substitute for corn starch currently imported to Nigeria in significant quantities.
Nigeria is also one of the world’s top importers of rice, importing over 2MT of milled rice per year. Rice export trade is very thin and prices are highly volatile with the Thai government positioned to significantly increase price by 50%. The unfortunate aspect here is that rice grows all across Nigeria, which will foster self-sufficiency and positively impact all geo-political zones. Our major problem is a lack of proper milling facility and capacity for quality rice. Another area of concern is that a country like Nigeria endowed with vast water-bodies, manpower and skill imports fish at an average of N97bn per annum – Source: AgricultureNigeria.com

There are endless opportunities in agriculture and more people are starting to realize that, especially young people. According to this Punch Newspaper report, Nigeria earned a total of $730m (N143bn) from its non-oil exports in the fourth quarter of 2015. On the 28thJanuary, 2016, the Executive Director/Chief Executive Officer of Nigerian Export Promotion Council (NEPC) Mr. Olusegun Awolowo stated that the NEPC has put in place some plans to increase the country’s non-oil export revenue to $18billion by 2019. A lot of money change hands in non-oil export. How would you like to get your own fair share of $18billion? Keep reading.
Nigeria’s export industry remains largely underutilized because we are still waking up from our oil-induced slumber and government is making every effort to promote economic diversification through non-oil exports. This is a golden opportunity for the smart entrepreneur to key in and prosper. Yes, export business is very profitable and the earning potentials will only increase in the coming years.

Welcome

Now to see and know about all of these opportunities and many more is not enough but to take a significant action to harness the opportunities. No matter how vast they are, if steps are not taken to key into them, they remain useless to you. This is why we advice all to come and let’s take advantage of this time and be at the forefront of the market by making investments our priority. “If you can’t make your money work for you, then you will never be free from slavery” It is very important to note that there are so many ways your money can work for you depending on your capacity at a given time but the most important thing is make it work. A lot of people can take the risk of investing their money in schemes that present to them obvious and outright uncertainty, like all the so called ponzi out there. In fact some of these schemes even make it open that there are no guarantee of money back so people are advice to make use of their spare money, despite that people invest in millions knowing that this schemes no matter how good or goodly intensions they are, can not last forever.
Our advise to us, If we have such money to invest in ponzi schemes where nobody is in control, we have no power over the growth of our money or is any guarantee given us what if same effort and money is being invested in something more promising with a future and the ability to stand the test of time, bearing the same of radical mind set. Invest in something you can see, touch, and even have the power to grow at your own speed: Agriculture.
Agriculture is one sector that cannot be saturated for several reasons but that is not our focus today. You might be asking: How do I invest in There are various ways to invest in agriculture; we group them into two categories; Active and Passive

[b]BE ACTIVE

You might own a vast expanse of Land or have the money to purchase some and some good money you don’t even know what to do with it or perhaps, you know that to do but don’t know how to, or maybe you even have a farm already, you need someone to manage for you. You are just a decision away from creating for yourself another powerful source of income. Contact us to help you make use of your asset; we manage your farm for you from preparation to marketing. And get some useful tips and advice from our consultancy services. Here, we only help you achieve your dreams in Agriculture, you are actively involved and it is your asset. But in case you do not have lands or are not heavily buoyant like the big cash earners or you are buoyant but do not really have the time to be Actively involved doing follow ups and constant visiting to your project you just want your money working for you, you can still do something and that takes us to the next category.

BE PASSIVE

Now one or the attributes of great people is that they make things work for them and rip their results with or without their direct input. You can become an investor even in your own little way, one of the best way to succeed in life is to work with a team, be part of a project, be a contributor to something and rip a little here and a little there, “ little drops of water makes a mighty ocean. Invest your money with Us, Your money will be used for farming and farm produce business and you get your returns according to our various Plans. We have different Investment plans you can take advantage of. And we have different projects, the good thing is at any time you can visit a project that you are part of, you will be updated as the project progresses and your suggestions and contributions will be welcomed at all times and together we can make an impact. Yes you can connect 4 panels with VoC of 46volts in series to the Magnum PT100 without issues.

The Magnum PT100 lists VoC limit as Max PV input voltage: 200 VDC + battery voltage, or 240 VDC - whichever is lower AND
Max PV operating voltage: 190 VDC

If you like risk you can even do 5 such panels in series sef grin

I know 2 sites here in Lagos who are using 330w 45-46v VoC panels setup as 4 panels in series connected to the Magnum PT100 without issues.

cc Mr Olagunju

Yes, i tried it at the time with 5 panels (300w) in series but i noticed that i went into the High Voc range(188 - 210). CC will only work when Voc is less than 187v. Since i had only 15panels, i had to return to 3 panel in series.

Currently, i am doing 3 in series

I use Flames 300w Mono Panels (21 units) to make up my 6.3kw array - sourced through Zeestone99 on this forum. Flames is a chinese product but I have found it to be good bang for the buck.

But please don't rush to buy more panels yet. What brand of panels are you using currently?

I am using an unbranded 300w mono panel giving between 48 to 50% yield on a good sunny day. My total yield per day ranges between 11 and 14kwh. Today i got 10.2kwh

You want to be sure to either keep the same exact panel brand and specs (VoC,VmP,Rated Current) or match them very closely. If you mix panels anyhow you may get suboptimal results especially when they are all connected to one CC.

Yes I am conscious of that
.

Let us evaluate your loads and battery consumption vs. solar yield. Since you are ground mounted, have you washed off the harmattan dust from your panels?

Yes, the panel is clean.

What kind of yield are you getting now? Your yield should be getting better as the year progresses except you have other issues e.g shading/shadows on your panels

My total yield per day ranges between 11 and 14kwh. Today i got 10.2kwh.

If I assume you consume 50% of your 600ah 48v capacity between 6pm and 8am everyday that is 300ah @ 48v or roughly 14.4kwh overnight - this is a lot - do you run ACs off your batteries overnight?

My total yield in a day is less than 14 4kwh. Besides, i consume about 5kwh out of it during the day, so, what i have left in the battery is not more than 75 to 80% DOD.
I manage what i have left between 5:30pm and 8am the following day. I am practically living off grid.

Have you put a timer on your freezer/fridge e.t.c.

I use my fridge and freezer between 9am and 4pm daily, total combine energy of 5 to 5.5kwh During the day

Do you have a meter to measure your overall household consumption per time e.g via the inverter monitoring interface?.

Yes, i take just about what i put.

We should tackle this issue holistically because even if you get enough panels now to ensure a daily full charge, 50% DoD will give you a 2 to 3 year battery life and you can easily do better with a few tweaks.

The reason for expanding the pvs is so as to generate enough to charge my battery properly and still be able to cover for all my needs during the day. My target is to achieve between 65 to 60% DOD 8am daily. Like i mentioned, i am living practically off the grid

My responses bolded above.

Sunshine not bad
But I got more results from Flames as against sunshine !!
zee; take note

Sunshine gave me just about 55% panel power;
Flames gave me about 80% power . . same installation environment; same weather !!

Does anyone sell Flames PV on this forum? Please whatsapp me on 08171374768.

My Oga. You have thrown some serious cash and resources at this problem.

I salute your determination and I'm happy at the outcome you have achieved - 14kwh yield out of a 4.5kw solar array is a decent result considering the harmattan haze that is just now lifting off.

Once we get into the times of good sun, you should be able to achieve 17kwh to 23kwh daily average if your power consumption stays as it is currently.

I have a sneaky feeling you already got good results once you ported to the Magnum PT100 CC and all you lacked was a means to measure your solar yield because the Magnum monitoring interface required you to also have a Magnum inverter. Regardless, you can not go wrong with the choices you have made - the Magnum Inverter and CC lines are well respected products and with good reason too.

Please observe battery DoD rules (no more than 30-50% of battery AH capacity consumed daily) and ensure your batteries get a full charge and move into 'float' daily and you should get many good years of service from them.

Thanks Niyi.

I still have challenges achieving full charge everyday. In most cases, i get past bulk charging to Absorption phase around 4pm everyday except yesterday that i got to floating stage because we had grid supply BY MISTAKE!!!

I try to ensure i don't go below 55% DOD as I am practically living off grid. We only get power supply whenever there is a major fault smiley

A quick question, i am planning to increase my panels so as to cover for my day use and also enough to fully charge the battery for the night. What brand of panel are you using? I am considering 300w Joysolar or may be Sunshine. Is there any other reasonably priced panels i could explore?

Thanks

Good afternoon house.

I finally got the Magnum PT-100 charge controller with the remote monitor ME-ARC50. However, the monitor can only be used with a Magnum inverter connected to the charge controller.

Please has anyone found a workaround to this in the house?

Right now I am only able to view PV voltage, PV power, charge voltage and current. Monitor will be needed to view logging data.

Finally i have something to report on my setup. I have changed the Master CC to Magnum PT100 CC. I have also changed my cable to 16mm tiny flex. I got a fairly used Magnum 4.3kw inverter as well. My daily harvest improved from 6.1kwh in November to 14kwh in January. Although weather may have played so part in the increment. I believe that the new charge controller and cable change play significant role

Dear Sir,

How has your experience been with the Magnum PT100 Charge Controller?

I am sure vs. your old controller it is performing superlatively well! grin

In keeping with the house tradition, you should give us a review/tear down to educate us and broaden the knowledge base.

Thanks for asking. I installed the PT-100 but couldn't access the logged data to compare the performance. I bought ME-ARC50 monitor but unknowingly, it requires that i install Magnum inverter to use the monitor. The monitor does not work on standalone PT-100.

The maximum i have noticed on the real time production is about 2200w, similar to my old controller. However, i want to replace my cable with tiny flex these coming days. I will provide update then.

I would go with the Morningstar too. Apart from the already stated reasons, in the event that you want to expand your array, the second CC will make that possible without the need for a second CC as would be the case if Midnite were used. Since the Midnite is already maxed out, you will need to get another controller for future expansion.

Cheers
Hello Niyi, please where can I get the Magnum PT-100 and the monitor ME-ARC50?
Just checking my options.

As far as I know Outback is right up there in thesame class of premium controllers as MorningStar, Midnite, Magnum e.t.c. I don't recall anything negative at all about the Outback brand.

In fact Midnite Solar is a breakout from Outback and was founded by the same guys that worked on the Outback if I recall correctly grin

@Saipro, Pranil please help provide perspective - I think you guys have done the most research on the technicals for all these charge controllers.

Thanks Niyi and everyone. My installer saw the discussions and he is reviewing all points made. To be fair to him, I bought both the Inverter and the Charge controller myself directly from China before meeting him. He had his concerns with the cc right from time but since it was already purchased, nothing could be done. He plans to bring in different controllers to check and validate what could be wrong.

I will provide update once he is done. Thanks

I have 6.3kw Panels [21 Pieces of 300watts each]

15pieces × 300watts are on my 60A MorningStar

6pieces × 300watts are on my EP Solar 60A (relic from my learning days) and mostly off these days since the MorningStar alone meets my needs perfectly.

With 15 × 300watts panels I get 59amps easily on my MorningStar and it doesn't run hot - recently I made a custom setting to limit my amps to 55amps while simultaneously decommissioning my EP Solar because I noticed I was boiling my batteries too much with a net charge of 70amps into a 360ah battery bank

I stay in a rented house so not a lot of flexibility to go on the roof several times to change config - once I move to my own place I will do

12pieces × 300watts on the current MorningStar 60A then another
9pieces × 300watts on a newly purchased MorningStar 60A.
Dump my 360Ah US Battery L16s and move to Lithium batteries.

This way everything runs cool and sweet and I can expect a ~90Amps plus total solar yield - two MorningStars is a costlier way to go but a decision I am comfortable making.

Again, because a lot of people follow this thread I am obliged to say that the Midnite Classic is the cheaper option in your scenario and it will deliver similar performance to the MorningStar.

Thanks Niyi and everybody that has contributed to this discussion. I have been checking my options since and have a few clarification to make. Bye the way, I only generated 6.0KW today smiley .

Please who has used any of the model below and what are the performances;

1) Midnite Solar Classic 150-MPPT Charge Controller 150V 96A
2) Midnite Solar Classic 150-SL MPPT Charge Controller 150V 96A
3) Midnite Solar Classic Lite 150 MPPT Charge Controller, 200V 79A

Also, is there a reason nobody mentioned Outback

thanks

Yes you can safely use the MorningStar! With a 3 panels in series string VmP 36volts × 3panels = 108volts. MorningStar will only start derating after 115VmP.

In practice you will likely not even see the rated VmP except on a very cool/cold day or in the morning - there is an inverse relationship between panel VmP and temperature so your location in tropical Nigeria is ideal to keep you under 110VmP.

Without speaking too much English MorningStar is perfect for this your config but the problem is that it is capped at 60A so you need two units to get max amps out of your array.

In naira terms one MorningStar 60A landed price is ~250k while the Midnite Classic 80A may be ~280k. By paying 30k extra from the start you could potentially squeeze out an extra 15 to 20amps out of your array with Midnite but if you go with Morningstar you will need to purchase another CC - a smaller sized 30A to 45A MorningStar is 160k to 200k - in the long run splitting duty across two CCs will serve you best e.g 3kw on the 60A MorningStar and 1.5kw on another 30AMorningstar but there is a clear price and short run advantage with one 80A Midnite Classic - how long the Midnite fan will last before it gives way under stress and how long the whole Midnite CC itself will last at max duty and max thermal duress I will leave as an open question for the Midnite fans to answer.

PS: People on this thread predominantly favor the Midnite I think so get ready for the deluge of responses grin

How many panel do you have on your Morning star 60A? all the 15 panel or less?
Satellite TV Technology / Re: Solar Energy, A Complement To FTA by olagunju2000: 10:03am On Nov 28, 2017
NiyiOmoIyunade:
Of course you know I will not let an attack on MorningStar go unanswered grin

MorningStar has an equivalent feature when you hypervolt - it will throw an alarm called 'High Array Voltage - Current Limit' and begin to derate/limit current e.g a 60A Morningstar CC would limit current to ~40Amps at 125VmP.

With a MorningStar there is no reason really to go beyond 3 panels in series especially if each panel has VmP in the 34-38volt range. They do have a 600volt controller but rated thesame 60A for ~$1,000 - sadly their expectation is that you buy a second controller or mix-match 30A/45A/60A sizes if you need more than 60A and I am not aware of any plans to make a larger version - limitations due to the laws of physics and fan-less/heatsink cooled operation I would guess.

In Mr Olagunju's 4.5kw scenario all other factors being equal a MorningStar would max him out at 60A - sadly for just a little more cash he would get more amps from the Midnite Classic but inherit all the issues with cooling and heat management and a busy fan .

I personally would mix and match MorningStars across the sizes regardless grin but surely the price to maximum amps advantage goes to Midnite.

my panel spec is
1) 15 pcs 300W mono solar panel (3 in series and 5 parallel)
2) Panel Spec:- VOC = 44.3, Isc = 8.93A, Vmp = 36V, Imp = 8.33A.

My Vmp is 36V per panel. Can I still use the Morning star 60A?

But Chinco will rate a 500w products to be 1kw...

I will just save more to get Victron charge controller jejeli

Good morning house,

Please which of this product is best for a 48V system (Total Voc of 132v)

1) Midnite Solar Classic 150 Charge Controller 150VDC Input MPPT
2) OutBack Power FM60-150VDC FLEXMax 60 Charge Controller
3) MORNINGSTAR TS-MPPT-60

Many thanks Mr Olagunju and you are welcome too.

With the pictures you have shared most of the house would say your installer could have done a neater job with the wiring cleanup especially with the changeovers/knife-switches inside the house but this is just aesthetics in the end

I also observed that he did not use the modular MC3/4 connectors to connect the panels in series and then parallel - to my eye the way he spliced the panels' positive and negative cables to the main trunk lines may not make for a firm mechanical connection - just something to check - if you could isolate each series string of panels and see what they are doing with a volt and amp meter and see if any string is doing much worse or lower than the others - further in the evening or after disconnecting panels from CC, try pulling the spliced wires apart - they should give no 'play' whatsoever i.e shouldn't feel loose.

The good news is that panel heating up and reducing output should not be a big issue in your scenario - you will also enjoy a cool shade under the panels in the afternoons.

I think you are pretty close to getting to a good place with your system - with a few wiring tweaks and a solid charge controller you should soon be smiling and reaping the benefits of your system.

One last thing is to check if your batteries are behaving close to spec i.e 48v 600ah - do you have access to a battery monitor? or you can just run a known wattage load for x hours and see how the batteries hold up - it may be that your batteries are lightly cycled given such a huge bank and the CC is just floating most of the day - but again in the pictures I saw the battery voltage at between 48.sumtn & 49.sumtn which is not a good sign so early in the night as it means they were not fully charged during the day or have been quickly depleted after sundown.

Are you simultaneously charging with PHCN or Generator during the solar charging hours? Is the surface of the panels clean and relatively dust free (if not wash them). Is the house or other object overshadowing the carport and shading the panels?

Just looking for what random factors could be limiting your yield

Thanks a lot. There was no load this afternoon because the battery was drained to 45% this morning. We charge the battery all the day and was not in use when i took the picture. Please what model is your morning star? Thanks

NiyiOmoIyunade:
I have been following the intensity of today's posts with keen interest and I must say I echo you BigRovar!

My MorningStar TS-MPPT 60A is connected to a 4.5kw (15 × 300 Mono Panels) array just like Mr Olagunju - my yield today was 17.77kwh in Lekki. Lagos State and this was an average day with quite a few cloudy intervals.

This underscores the importance of a solid charge controller as I routinely do 21kwh daily yield on a good day when my batteries are deeply drained.

Please bear the following in mind - my panels are West facing at a ~30° slope so by no means ideal yet I get these results with a solid charge controller - I made custom settings to throttle my controller max charging amps to 55amps - it will routinely hold 54.4amps from 1pm to 4:30pm with only brief rests at 40sumtn amps when there is a lot of cloudy skies.

When I had my chinco EP Solar on this same 4.5kw array I would get say 45 amps very briefly as peak but EP Solar would generally stay around 39amps - the only thing different between 39amps & 54amps yield is a solid MPPT charge controller!!! - 15amps improvement and remember I am throttling the morningstar controller output to 55amps via custom settings so as not to boil my batteries - I have seen it easily hold 58.sumtn amps steady for 3 hours plus.

So that's it - Mr Olagunju probably needs a proper charge controller if everything else checks out - currently I disconnected my second array of 1.8kw which is connected to the EP Solar - I am keeping it as backup for when the rainy/cloudy season comes.

Thanks, i hear you loud and clear. Unfortunately i bought the chinco one myself. No blame to the installer. I will arrange for another one

The peak, I get now is 156watts, due to the weather conditions I do get 140- 156w for about two hours...
My panels are directly on the roof also It's been a while I wash them.. though my place is not that dusty

So in which context is your "peak" used ?

I need real life answers . . . So i go to my lounge; hook up a multimeter and see what is coming in . . . How simple can it get . .

I don't even take into account what the Charge Controller is telling me, i check voltage and current and resistance manually . . .

That's an overkill for practicality . . .

Back to you: Let's be honest and serious for once . . .

Even with a Yachi, Yingli, Solarworld, CanadianSolar or brazilian whatever . . in real life specs; you cannot get 91% of panel specs . .

That is the answer he needs. So if we go back to why I told you all to discard the manuals, now you see it.

Under STC, a 100W panel should produce at least 99.9W of power . . . but if you are basing your judgements on STC, you are headed for an

epic world of failure or regrets.

He asked a question, f*ck the STC; give him a real life answer . . .

if he gets above that, good . . ; if he doesnt, then he won't be disappointed.

Thanks to everyone. All your your argument are very robust and I really appreciate all your thoughts.

My real concern is that I only get about 2400W max instantaneously out of the total install capacity of 4500W. I wanted to know if something is wrong with the panels. I have learnt a lot today about what I need to check on the other elements. The last enquiry is that how am I sure that my panel is doing what it is supposed to be doing. I wanted a way to validate that the problem is not coming from the panel itself. So, I wanted to find out from you experts, if I can validate the panels by checking the Voc and Isc on a sunny afternoon and comparing to the ratings of the panel. Based on all your experiences, will I get a reading (using multimeter) close to the ratings of the panel if the panel is ok ? Or is there another way of finding out if the panels are ok?

Thanks...

I disagree with that... 220 Panels 140 + 80 has produced 201 watt peak going to the battery..CC is PWM In July... So he should get close to 100% on bench test

Hello Dam5reev, I do not understand the explanation above. Do you mean that if I test 300W panel (Voc and Isc), I should get close to the spec of the panel on a good sunny day? Kindly explain and thanks for your cntribution

Still not gonna get past the 77% mark grin grin grin

Now I have come to that realization. I should have added more panels to compensate for the inefficiency. Today, I am doing roughly 55%. So many thing to learn

Thanks Bigrovar . .

you would never get close to the panel specs . . at most 77%; if you're lucky

no matter how the sun shines . . .

as a matter of fact; too much sunshine + poor ventilation = too much heat = reduced panel performance.

Thanks for this insight. Actually, the solar panels are in the open like a car port with flat roof. No shade and ventilation should be ok (my thoughts).

...

Thanks Makavele, Charge controller is supposed to be an MPPT according to the spec smiley . I will check each of the panels as suggested and cabling as well.

One question in my mind is, on a sunny afternoon, if I measure both Voc and Isc; Am I supposed to get values close to the panel spec VOC = 44.3, Isc = 8.93A?

Good day house. Please i need your help to help review my setup as I am getting not up 60% of my installation capacity

I have the following

1) 15 pcs 300W mono solar panel (3 in series and 5 parallel)
2) Panel Spec:- VOC = 44.3, Isc = 8.93A, Vmp = 36V, Imp = 8.33A.
3) Based on the connection, Total V= 132V and I= 44.65A(Voc and Isc used in the computation).
4) I have a Master Charge Controller: Max 150V and 80A (48V system)
5) Battery setup: 24pcs of 2V 600A batteries connected in series to produce 48V.
6) The setup was installed 2 months ago.
7) The highest generation seen has been 6.1Kw/day on a sunny day.
cool I leave at Ajah area of Lagos
9) My Depth of discharge has been around 65% until last week when I was advised to use more to see if it will boost the production. I increase DOD to 45 - 50%
10) in Real time, the maximum that I have seen is 2400W.
11) Installation was carried out by a professional.
12) I check for loses, I am only losing average of 100W (comparing power from solar output measured under the solar shed and Controller output)

QUESTIONS:
1) my total installation capacity is 4500W (solar panel), out of which I am getting max of 2400W. Is this normal
2) Is there anything wrong with my installation.
3) The power generated has not been sufficient to charge my batteries. Is there a way to improve this

Please help
