BOOKS, computers, printer, and other valuable office equipment were destroyed at the University of Ibadan bookshop, on Monday morning following the heavy rain on Sunday night within the university environment.

Early Monday morning, the staff of the bookshop were shocked as they discovered that some sections of the bookshop roofs had caved in following a high volume of water leaking from the concrete roof of the bookshop. Almost every section of the building were flooded with many valuable books and stationery in water.

This was said to have been caused by the pattern of the bookshop’s rooftop which seems unable to hold water anymore, thereby releasing water through the inner roof of the bookshop.

Professor Ezekiel Olusola Ayoola, a former head of the Department of Mathematics, University of Ibadan, Oyo State, has explained why Aminu Othman Zubairu, a former lecturer of the university who died last week under circumstances suspected to be suicide, spent more than two decades on his PhD programme without completing it.

According to Ayoola, when the PhD work of Zubairu dragged on for many years, the postgraduate committee asked him questions. He said Zubairu exonerated his supervisor, putting the blame on himself for his dissatisfaction with the level of results he had obtained.

He also described Zubairu as “a kind of perfectionist who possibly was eyeing some mathematics laureate at the doctoral level".

Ayoola made the comments on Monday after Samuel Edet, an alumnus of the department, put up a Facebook post blaming the institution for Zubairu’s PhD travails.

“I knew Aminu Othman Zubairu, he was my algebraic topology lecturer. There is no question as to the depth of his understanding of his field. He was an astounding teacher, a good examiner, a good-hearted easy-going man, and one you can reliably have a conversation with,” Edet had written.

A Kaduna-born lecturer at the department of Mathematics, University of Ibadan, Mr A.O Subair, has reportedly set himself on fire at his resident, Phillipson road, University of Ibadan.

The late lecturer, who tendered his resignation letter without any justifiable reason, had not evacuated his belongings from the staff quarters before deciding to kill himself.

It was gathered that the late university lecturer had separated from his family and had challenges progressing in his carrier.

Confirming the incident in a telephone chat, Chairman of Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), University of Ibadan (UI) chapter, Professor Deji Omole, who described the incident as pathetic, stated that it was a major loss to the Union.

It was held that candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC) at the poll, Mr Gboyega Oyetola, was not duly elected.

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) was therefore, directed to withdraw the certificate of return issued to Mr Oyetola and issue and fresh one to Mr Adeleke.

At the ruling today, the tribunal held that the re-run election conducted by INEC was illegal, null and void.

A video has surfaced online showing an officer of the Nigeria Customs Service (NCS) shooting an unarmed man, now simply identified by NCS as Godwin.

The incident was said to have occurred along the Sagamu Interchange in Ijebu-Ode, Ogun State.

From the video, it didn’t seem like there was a physical struggle, although tempers were flayed, before the officer simply cocked his gun and fired.

The person who recorded the video was also threatened but he stood his ground, insisting that the officer had no right to confiscate his phone.

A lady who seemed like an ally of the deceased was heard lamenting that they had just returned from outside the country, and the man was shot because they refused to part with N5,000.

However, the NCS has taken a contrary position to what happened in the video, stating that the person who shot the gun is a friend of the NCS.

-ACADEMIC Staff Union of Universities (ASUU)has suspended the three month old strike after signing all agreements with the Federal Government.

The Independent National Electoral Commission on Sunday announced the names of 144 observers that will monitor the 2019 general elections.

INEC, however, threatened to cancel and withdraw the accreditation of any organisation if its members or agents breach the code of conduct.
The Commission in a notice on its website warned that any unaccredited group found in any state for the elections shall be handed over to law enforcement agencies.

INEC also said that accredited field observers found in states other than where they were posted would be sanctioned.
