Abdulazeez99: The Lagos State Emergency Management Agency (LASEMA), during overnight operation on Thursday, rescued five victims in another collapsed building in Ojuelegba area of Surulere.
The Chief Executive Officer, LASEMA, Dr Oluwafemi Oke-Osanyintolu, who confirmed this to newsmen on Friday in Lagos said the victims were rescued after the building was pulled down to the ground zero about 11 p.m.
Oke-Osanyintolu said the accident occurred at 9.15 p.m., adding that the rescue was in collaboration with the Lagos State Building Control Agency (LASBCA), Igbere TV reports.
“The most important thing is that we rescued five people alive while pulling down the building to save lives and property to the residents.
“When we got to the building, we discovered that the building was highly unstable, LASBCA had marked the building on March 25, 2015, and May 21 while the residents and the landlord were warned to vacate their premises.
“We need to perform, urgently, the construction and re-development of that area because of the safety of lives and property. We then have to use our sophisticated equipment to check whether people are under the debris. With our equipment, we pulled down the building to the ground zero,” the chief executive officer said.
Oke-Osanyintolu urged residents in the state to ensure their buildings were properly maintained, adding that emergency was everybody’s business.
He, however, announced plans by the agency to conduct a test on all buildings within the area, in order to ensure the safety of the environment in the locality.
Also speaking to newsmen, the General Manager, LASBCA, Mrs Abiola Kosegbe, said the agency had identified and marked the collapsed building in question in 2015 and 2019.
She said that the marking was done after conducting a text which indicated that the property was in a distress.
“Our officers visited the building and sealed it to avoid loss of life, the investigation showed that some of the tenants caught off the seal notice and continued living in the premises,” she said.
Kosegbe urged the residents to avoid living in a building in distress in their own good and in the interest of the community in general.
She also advised residents and prospective landlords to ensure that they carryout Non-Destructive Testing (NDT) to evaluate the quality of materials used in the building.
Another government official, Mr Yinka Jonathan, urged the state government to compel building engineers to always go through a series of test to ensure solid erection of a building.
Jonathan, however, stressed that if the government was not satisfied with the standard of a particular building, it should stop people from renting such a structure.
The Deputy Leader, Surulere Local Government Council, Mr Adebisi Davis, who expressed disappointment over the sad development, however, thanked God for saving lives in the incident.
News Agency of Nigerian (NAN) reports that a three-storey building at Magodo Phase 1 and a two-storey building collapsed at No 7, Rufai Street, Ojuelegba about 12 days ago.

nams77: I will forgive you ignorance and wont condescend to same level and trade words with you. My submission is this, why dont you or someone in lagos take the pain to go down and check out the op story instead of sitting down here as an arm chair critic and raising tantrum. If i was in Lagos, i would have done so.
A fairly skilled person can pick holes in any story. You did same to mine when you said the hospital room looked like a hotel room because there was intercom( phone receiver) in the picture i uploaded then. I was laughing and shocked at the same time. There are categories of hospitals dear. I really don't have the luxury of time to start picking holes in your submission ifyalways.. Whatever you believe cannot be taken from you, its yours.
My advice to the op is to forget and just look up to God. That is her source, not nairalanders. Thanks |

I have never heard where a family will say they want to take over a property in which tenants are occupying and paying rent. Then they just come and demolish the property. So developer was collecting rent without paying the family abi? Nonsense.
Your house was marked to be demolished. You refuse to move till it came down on your head. Finish. Landlord probably collected rent on a marked property and you decided to die there. We are just victims of wicked developer and landlord nothing more struggle to take over the property from developer was the result of what happened If we had known about it we wouldn't have renewed our rent at all if you see the way the caterpillar mangled our property you will know there is more to it Everything was planned I tell you Both the owner of the land and developer are late, the developer died his family took over and share the flats among the family ,my own flat was given to the last wife My own land lady is one wicked agbero woman that use bouncer to frighten us she doesn't give us space always asking for money even when our rent has not expired she will ask my hubby to help her out for money Each tenant has different landlord they pay to the family of the owner of the land they don't agree and the family of the developer don't agree the struggle over the property landed us where we are |

baby124: OP, Sorry for your loss. I really don’t know how people move on from such tragedy. It’s obvious your house was marked for demolition but you people refused to pack out. Probably staying in the crumbling house for free and trying to take advantage until the last moment. This is why you are where you are right now. LASEMA cannot just demolish your house without sufficient notice.
Well, you have to show more proof like, before and after pictures. I am sure you lived there for a while so you have pictures of yourself in that compound and pictures after the building was demolished.
You will also need a few people in the area who can corroborate your story. People just don’t give money like that anymore. Scammers have destroyed that goodwill. For now, look for a church or mosque to stay in with your husband till you can find suitable accommodation. I wish you all the best! Well everything was okay before the family of the owner land came out to ask to take over but the developer did not agree saying they have rents to collect our money is still running if you don't know about anything don't jump and start typing rubbish I value my life so I wouldn't stay if I know there is danger |
