Is the government afraid he will always reject the award this time around. |
Three days before the Nigeria government is due to confer a National Honour on Professor Chinua Achebe, a family source has told SaharaReporters that the nation’s most celebrated writer has yet to be informed of his nomination by the government. According to the list of nominations published in Nigerian newspapers, the literary icon is to be honoured with the Commander of the Federal Republic (CFR), the same nomination he turned down several years ago, famously asserting that Nigeria's condition at that time under President Olusegun Obasanjo’s tenure, was “too dangerous for silence.” Concluded Achebe in his letter to Obasanjo; “I must register my disappointment and protest by declining to accept the high honor awarded me in the 2004 Honors List.” SaharaReporters attempted to confirm whether he would accept this year’s offer in what many consider to be considerably worse circumstances than in 2004, but our source said the writer, who is now at Brown University in Rhode Island, does not officially know anything about his award. Should Professor Achebe accept the National Honour, he would be appearing in Nigeria at a time that it has developed considerably more intractable political, economic and security issues. Corruption has become more visible, and President Jonathan, while preaching an anti-corruption dogma, has refused to declare his assets; the government is withdrawing petroleum subsidies; Nigeria is still largely in the dark, and Islamic militancy in the North has driven deep security fears into the heart of the administration. Nigerians are also curious about the quality and placement of many of those who are to be honoured by Jonathan. Businessman Aliko Dangote is being given the Grand Commander of the Order of the Niger (GCON), Nigeria’s second highest honour, the first time it is being offered to someone other than a former occupant of the highest positions in the judiciary and the legislature. Already, Femi Gbajabiamila, the Minority Leader of the House of Representatives has rejected his nomination for the Order of the Federation (OFR), questioning the criteria for nominations. A report said the ACN representative from Lagos State is distancing himself because he objects to many of the characters on the list, and feels that the Honours must be reserved for Nigeria’s best rather than being treated as presidential largesse. http://saharareporters.com/news-page/national-honour-nominee-chinua-achebe-not-contacted-government |
bhusayor:agree with the bolded |
no problem, waiting for him before i bring in my view on the matter |
JP and frosbel, my question is still left un answer, check the first page. |
@Gbawe, ask any body that vote and support GEJ did not do that because of his acheivement as Governor in Bayelsa (i see none), not because of his acheivement as acting and subsequently president, but because he is 'our own', Have you forgotten the name he gave himself during election campaign "Azikwe"?, these sets of people will always be the first to accuse you of being ethnic bigot. |
@all, what can you say about the issue of Sugar daddies and sugar mummies, this attitude is denying us from getting the best, if all these papas and mamas continue with this trend, what will be the fate of the singles? also who is to blame, is it the papas that is looking for 'fresh blood', the lady that accept the offer, the economy, parent or greed? |

yorubas are the most non tribalist Nigerian, doing Obj era the bashing he receives are mostly from his yoruba kinsmen, have you forgotten? moreover, criticizing GEJ is not the same thing as hatred. it's up to him to take it and become a better person. |
There is something toba said that make me laugh. "muslims should learn from xtians". I look around i find nothing worthy to learn from them. When Allah said the best characters to emulate is that of the prophet. Toba, you make me laugh o |
Araboy, i understand you clearly. These people takes delight in attacking any thing islam. Just take a look at religion section and see what am talking about. That section is uneducative, that's their own way of evangelism. In this section, i doubt if you'll find any thread that despice the personality of Jesus. Just take it as their own way of life and know how to deal with them. |
What more can i add. Okija_ juju: a guy that don't like anything Ekiti, methink one of his ex may be from that side. Ileke idi: always interesting to read, marshal her point in a comical way. Bin: a guy that happily display his ignorance not minding the opinion people hold about him. Desola: a yoruba apologist, odu'a to the core. |
