There are damp proof creams that can be effectively used. First hack off all paints and plastered levels revealing the masonry works at about 3-6inches above the floor. After this is done, drill holes at about 6 inches interval all across the affected walls and begin to inject the cream into the holes. The cream later spreads and form like a water resistant sheet that prevent future dampness. Afterwards, replaster with "our" not so effective water proof cement and paint. While this has good success rates, it is not 100% effective as some cases are usually more terrible.

This is termed as Capillary issues or Structural dampness.

This occurs when when a building's damp proof course is faulty or in-existent and allows for water or moisture to rise through the masonry works mostly from the foundation. These days, this issue is forestalled by using a damp proof membrane (A nylon sheet) that is spread meticulously beneath concrete floors.

In other cases (As most likely in yours), where a wrong foundation type is used (Mostly where strip and pad is used instead of raft), these issues occur. Structural dampness happens mostly on the ground floor.

Good day house. Please this is so important. What causes this rising dampness on walls. I have noticed it in many houses in Abuja. What can be done to rectify this problem. it flakes off the cement from the wall. Gives dark patches and swellings on screeded walls. I cannot even use wall papers cause it will soak the paper. I paint the wall after every raining season.
Mind you, the house I am living in now is a new house and german floor waterproof nylon was used to cover the whole floor before concrete was poured. Water proof cement was also used to screed the wall.

Please any solution because it is really embarrassing.
