So if you think their priority is the unemployment, poverty, insecurity, corruption, and the myriad problems facing our country, better get your heads out of the clouds. They don’t care about you or me, for they are too busy jostling to position their children to take over from where they left off. As far back as 2013, Senator Ayo Arise who represented Ekiti North Senatorial District between 2007 -2011, aptly described politics as the most lucrative job in Nigeria. This has motivated our greedy rulers to corner the goodies for themselves and their families via Hereditary Democracy.

Bello El-Rufai, son of the sitting Kaduna governor Nasir El-Rufai; and Adam Sambo, son of former vice-president Namadi Sambo were in the race to represent Kaduna North Federal constituency in the House of Representatives. Bello El-Rufai won the ticket of the APC, but Adam lost the PDP ticket after he had paid out N2m each to 37 delegates.
The doors are not only opened for Nepo Babies to enter; in fact, the whole house is given to them.
Do the maths N2m x 37? A figure our jobless youths can only dream of. We only got to know of the money spent because Adam Sambo lost and demanded his refund. Think of how much some of the winners spent.
Mustafa Lamido, son of former governor of Jigawa State, Sule Lamido. Mustafa emerged as the governorship candidate of the PDP for 2023. The younger brother is a candidate for the House of Representatives.
Erhiatake Ibori-Suenu, daughter of former governor of Delta State, James Ibori, won the PDP ticket in the race for Ethiope Federal constituency for House of Representatives, and she is currently representing Ethiope West in the state House of Assembly.
Marilyn Okowa-Daramola, daughter of the incumbent governor and vice presidential candidate of PDP won unopposed the PDP ticket for Ika North East seat of the state House of Assembly. Who can dare to oppose the child of an incumbent governor and aspiring vice president?
Joju Fayose, son of former Ekiti State governor, Ayo Fayose won the ticket of PDP for Ekiti Central constituency 1 for the House of Representatives.
Olumide Osoba, son of former governor of Ogun State, Chief Segun Osoba, currently represents Abeokuta North/Odeda/Obafemi Owode constituency in the house of representative.
Babajide Akeredolu, son of current governor of Ondo state, is a special adviser and, Director-General Performance and Project implementation unit, Office of the Governor of Ondo State. On the speculation that he might be succeeding his father in office, he said as reported by Punch on Dec 2, 2022, ” I have never thought of being a governor… There are multiple cards to success for me. I am lucky I have a strong surname with lots of options for me.” Lucky Nepo baby!! In the same article in Punch newspaper, someone called Mandarin Duck responded, “I have a STRONG SURNAME. ” UNBELIEVABLE! ” What on earth in context does that mean if we boast that our society is built on merit and fairness? That sentence just reeks of nepotism, weakness, inequality, impunity?”
In Lagos State where the National Leader and the Presidential candidate of the ruling APC has held sway for years, he installed his daughter Folashade Tinubu-Ojo as the Iyaloja of Lagos. Since we are not talking about Nepo wives we will not talk about Mrs. Oluremi Tinubu, wife of the Godfather of Lagos politics, a serving Senator since 2011.
I cannot conclude without giving honour to whom it is due: the original Nepo Babies — Bukola and Gbemisola Saraki, though it might seem strange calling them Babies – Bukola is 60yrs old and Gbemisola is 57yrs old, their father Senator Olusola Saraki actually perfected dynastic hereditary Democracy.
For four decades, the Saraki political dynasty held sway over the people of Kwara State. Dr. Olusola Saraki was the Senate leader in 1979 during the 3rd Republic; the political Godfather of Kwara politics.

There was a revolving door of political posts between his children. As one was finishing the other was taking over. It was as if Kwara State had no capable men and women.

Gbemisola was elected into the Federal House of Representatives in 1999, in 2003 she graduated to the Senate, where she served for eight years. The year the sister graduated into the Senate, the brother became the governor of the state from 2003 to 2011. Where to go next? Senate of course. The sister vacated the Senate seat for the brother to occupy and assumed she was going to occupy the governorship seat, unfortunately the brother had his own anointed candidate. The father promptly carried the sister to another party where she lost to the brother’s anointed candidate

President Buhari the nepotist in chief promptly compensated her for her loss by making her the Minister of State for transport, and later appointed Minister of State for Mines and Steel Development, where she
serves up to date.

The Civil Society Organisations (CSOS) raised its concerns on this growing trend, stating through the leader, Awwal Musa Rafsanjani “It is part of abuse of power by people in government to use the advantage of their position to suppress other qualified aspirants… if the process is transparent and competitive and fair to every category of Nigerian, that is not a problem.”

I submit sir, that we definitely have a problem, Nigeria is neither transparent nor fair. Nepo Babies do not make it competitive, and their fathers have designed it to work like that.
