Currently Nigeria faces a power crisis which has led to the migration of most manufacturing companies to neighboring countries. Consumers face several challenges due to inadequacies in the service delivery of the Power Sector. The fact that there are very few options for Alternative Power Supply open to customers has resulted in a situation where consumers both private and commercial are vulnerable due to the short comings of this sector. The consumers have to deal several issues in the Power Sector, they include; • An average of 80% of the homes in the country use Generating Sets which aside from being an additional expense that most families can ill afford, this Generators give off Carbon Monoxide exhaust fumes which is a poisonous gas that has caused several needless deaths. • Some businesses spend 20% to 30% of initial investment on acquisition of electricity generation facilities to enhance electricity supply and an average of 30% of their income to keep these facilities running. • Consumers are continually over charged, and failure to pay these costly bills lead to unfair disconnections of electrical lines. • Consumers face hassles when trying to acquire Meters, and sometimes these Meters end of getting stolen and re-sold by touts • Due to lack of strong and stable structure for this sector consumers are exploited by touts parading as PHCN officials • Poor power supply which leads to destruction of appliances • Cases have been recorded where Transformers blow up and it takes weeks or months to get it fixed The above listed issues and more have resulted in lack of faith in the sector by consumers and, the time for a phased strategic approach to these issues is now. As a result of the foregoing, there is great need to engage consumers and service providers in this sector to search out, the causes and what the rights and responsibilitiresponsibilitiesers are in issues. To this end the Forum will feature consumers, experts and sector consultants to engage with a view to enlightening, enlighteningnd proffering solutions. Since its deregulation, the telecommunications in Nigeria has grown at an astounding rate. In the face of the tremendous growth in the sector, there have been mass complaints about the efficiency, cost effectiveness and integrity of its services to the consumer. These challenges have limited customer satisfaction which in turn is resulting in dissonance. This Forum is organized with the aim of evaluating the prevalent consumer issues ranging from high tariffs, high drop calls, poor customer services and lack of flexibility in consumer transactions. We hope to identify the causes and what the rights and responsibilities of the telecoms consumers are in these instances. The Forum will also create an avenue for consumers, service providers, regulators, legal and sector consultants to connect with a view to enlightening, empowering and resolving these issues as much as possible.
