Dental crowns are an amazing solution for people who deal with cracked or chipped teeth. Crowns provide a long-lasting solution since they prevent bacteria from entering the cavity in the tooth and allows the person to enjoy their meals normally. Dental crowns are the best alternative for both aesthetic and functional purposes.

What is a Dental Crown?

A dental crown is a tooth-shaped cap that helps cover and protect any broken tooth. It can come in many sizes and shapes. They are specially designed to mimic the natural appearance of your tooth and hence there are a variety of options to suit your functional and aesthetic needs. Dental crowns can anywhere up to 20 years if they are well looked after.

Patients can choose the type of crown they require, options may include:

- Porcelain: Porcelain crowns are by far the most popularly used. They are considered to be the best material for mimicking the natural appearance of your teeth, especially if the damaged tooth lies forward in the mouth.
- Stainless steel: These are typically used as an alternative till the permanent crown is being designed. They are ideal for alleviating the risk of bacteria or decay from entering the treatment site until you wait for the permanent crown. Once the permanent crown is ready for placement, the stainless steel crown is removed.
- Metal (titanium) crowns: Titanium crowns are known for their resistance and durability to decay. They are long-lasting, incredibly strong, and withstand biting and chewing. But these are the most expensive options.
- Porcelain and metal hybrids: This type of crown combines the durability of titanium with the mimicking ability of porcelain to create a hybrid tooth crown. Typically, they are used for front and back teeth to enhance both aesthetics and durability.
- Resin crowns: One of the least expensive types of crowns, resin crowns are becoming less popular due to the popularity of titanium and porcelain crowns.
- Gold crowns: Gold crowns are rarely used since titanium and porcelain are used extensively. But still few people consider these. Usually, gold crowns are used to replace the molars in the back of the mouth.
- Temporary crowns: Temporary crowns are similar to the stainless steel ones. They help cover your teeth while you wait for your permanent crown. These crowns are usually made up of acrylic-based metals and your dentist may recommend to keep them in your mouth for up to two weeks.

When Do You Require a Tooth Crown?

Some of the most common reasons for dental crown implants are:

- When the tooth has become weak due to cavity or decay
- To cover and protect a damaged, natural tooth
- To protect a tooth post root canal
- To recover an implant
- To replace a large filling
- For aesthetics (if the tooth has become damaged through accidental trauma)
- To align your bite (if you suffer from malocclusion)

What Does Getting a Crown Involve?

Nowadays, having a dental crown inserted is a very common and routinely performed procedure. Besides, it requires a few trips to the dental clinic. Dental crown implementation is not something that can be performed in one visit.

The dental crown implementation involves multiple steps:

- Your dentist will treat your tooth to eliminate the decay on your tooth (or teeth).
- Next, the mold of your tooth is taken to design a dental crown to fit the damaged area.
- After this, a temporary crown is fitted to the damaged tooth until your permanent crown is being designed. Till then, you must take good care of the temporary crown. Follow all the dentist's recommendations.
- Your actual crown should be ready within a week and you are good to enjoy your favorite meals.

In any case, if the crown falls out or gets chipped, you should not try to reattach the crown yourself, rather seek dental advice immediately.

Health / Re: The Different Types Of Crowns You Can Get For Your Front Teeth by oluchiumeh: 4:56pm On Aug 05, 2023
Jakeslessor:

You may have heard of crowns, but you may not know what they are or how they can help you. Crowns come in several different forms and materials, and while they don’t directly improve the strength of your teeth, they can help prevent future damage that might affect their integrity. Here’s what you need to know about the different kinds of crowns you can get for your front teeth from a Manhattan dentist.

Porcelain fused to metal
A porcelain fused to metal crown, also known as a PFM crown, is the most common type of dental crown. This crown is made from porcelain and metal and it is often recommended if you need a strong, natural looking tooth restoration. Porcelain fused to metal dental crowns are not only durable and easy to clean, but they can also be customized in various colors.
If you are still unsure about which type of dental restoration might work best for your front teeth or which dentist near me can help with your treatment plan, call us today! One of our knowledgeable staff members will be happy to answer any questions you might have.

All-porcelain
A crown is a metal or porcelain cap that covers the entire visible surface of an affected tooth. Porcelain is a material used to make the crown that looks very natural and blends in with other teeth. The dentist can choose to do a front-to-back crown, which is more common, where the back side of your tooth is also covered by porcelain. Or they could just cover the front side and leave the back side exposed. Either way, it's important to see a dentist near you if you have any questions or concerns about what type of treatment you should get for your tooth.

Gold
Dental crowns are often used to cover and protect decayed, broken, or fractured teeth from further damage. They can also be used to restore teeth that are misshapen or discolored. A dentist near you can help determine the best treatment option in your case.
A dental crown is a type of tooth restoration that covers the part of the tooth that's visible when you smile. There are two main types: porcelain and metal. Porcelain crowns have a natural appearance and are more aesthetically pleasing than metal crowns, which can look fake or unnatural if they're not done well. Metal crowns are typically less expensive than porcelain ones, but they may require more frequent visits to the dentist to make sure they stay clean.

Composite
Crowns are a type of tooth restoration that covers the entire visible part of the tooth. They can be made out of porcelain, gold, or a composite (tooth-colored) material. Porcelain is more expensive but it doesn't stain like composite. Gold crowns are very durable and last longer than porcelain crowns. Composite crowns should be replaced every 5 years because they wear down over time from chewing and biting. A dentist near you will take an impression or mold of your teeth to create your custom-fit crown. They'll also make sure there's enough room in your mouth for your new tooth and any other teeth that need to be removed so that it fits correctly without damaging adjacent teeth or gums.

Sewasaunt:

Gold is not that strong and it is mostly for Anterior teeth or aesthetics.

Gold crowns will cost between 80,000-120,000 or more depending on the centre.

Setting up labs that can fabricate Emax and zirconia crowns are expensive and this is Nigeria.

Ordinary soap and cotton wool is a big issue in many government hospitals.

Porcelain (though aesthetically pleasing and can appear very similar to natural teeth) is fragile and on its own isn't very good for Molars because of chewing force, that's why the zirconia and Emax as well as other forms of materials are being researched into, used and developed.
