I personally think you should take this route instead of diving deep into the World of PHP.
Building sites with Wordpress is already clogged with a lot of new - average developers, therefore having the ability to build a headless wordpress with react as frontend will make you stand out from the crowd.
As sides its speed, its more customizable and your knowledge in react will open you to more opportunities and transitioning to other technologies is also be easier.
Also the WP REST api will give you a working knowledge of REST API and crud functionality.

On the backend side of things learn PHP then learn hooks and shortcodes. Also need to learn ACF and how it works too. Gutenberg is hot for custom blocks right now. Wpdb if you are doing monolithic stuff. On the frontend learn React really really well. Theres a lot more but those are the things I really work with.

I think using WP REST API as backend and React js as front-end works too, one can create wordpress theme with the two technologies....I stand to be corrected though

Limit the use of animations and motion please it was a bit dizzying.
Like I said though, in practical instances.
