At least, six traders were reported dead while 12 persons are still missing after a boat mishap on Wednesday in River Niger in Shanga Local Government Area of the state.

It was gathered that the incident happened following a head-on collision of two canoes carrying traders and their goods on Tuesday at about 8:30 p.m. in Barikin Sakace in Shanga Local Government Area.


The Chief Press Secretary to the Kebbi State Governor, Abubakar Dakingari, confirmed the incident to newsmen in the state on Wednesday.

“Two canoes were carrying more than 78 passengers, six persons have been confirmed dead while 12 are still missing and over 60 were rescued.

“Governor Atiku Bagudu of the Kebbi State has directed the traditional rulers, local government chairmen, Nigerian Inland Waterways’ officials and Marine Police to prohibit night travels by boats and canoes.” He said

Central banks should be prepared to intervene, says Agustin Carstens.

A top international banking official says that central banks should be prepared to intervene and prevent virtual currencies becoming a threat to financial stability.
Agustin Carstens, the general manager of the Bank for International Settlements (BIS) — an international organisation for central banks — said Tuesday (6 February) that bitcoin "has become a combination of a bubble, a Ponzi scheme and an environmental disaster."
In a speech in Frankfurt, Germany, Carstens said many people believe so far that, given the limited size of virtual currencies, "concerns about them do not rise to a systemic level".
But he added that "if authorities do not act pre-emptively, cryptocurrencies could become more interconnected with the main financial system and become a threat to financial stability." He said central banks must be prepared to intervene if necessary.
"There is a strong case for policy intervention," he said while speaking at Frankfurt's Goethe University, in comments reported by Reuters.
"These assets can raise concerns related to consumer and investor protection," he continued. "Appropriate authorities have a duty to educate and protect investors and consumers, and need to be prepared to act."
Carstens said that in order to stop virtual money from becoming a "parasite" on the traditional banking system more regulation and standards need to be put in place. "This means same risk, same regulation, and no exceptions allowed," the top banker stated.
His comments came after UK prime minister Theresa May indicated that British authorities are "very seriously" looking into the ramifications of cryptocurrencies like bitcoin. Similar threats of a crackdown recently emerged from officials in South Korea and the US.
Cryptocurrency, at least in the form it was originally intended, does not require central banks to operate effectively. It is a decentralised form of money made and traded online. Its value spiked over the past six months, amid rising fears from bankers it was a bubble.
In December 2017, the price of a single bitcoin spiked to more than $19,000. It has since dipped significantly. On Tuesday, it fell to under $6,000 for the first time this year.
Earlier, The Telegraph revealed that Lloyds Banking Group was restricting its customers' access to bitcoin, banning them from using its credit cards to purchase the cryptocurrency.

Twitter loses chief operating officer Anthony Noto to finance firm
Noto spent three and a half years at Twitter.


Twitter has lost one of its most high-profile employees, chief operating officer Anthony Noto.

The social media platform announced on Tuesday (23 January) that Noto had been offered a chief executive position elsewhere and had chosen to leave Twitter. According to the Wall Street Journal last week, Noto was weighing up an offer from tech startup SoFi.



SoFi has confirmed its capture of Noto and interim chief executive Tom Hutton lauded the company's move.

"We are simply thrilled to have found someone of Anthony's expertise and knowledge to lead SoFi," Hutton said.

"The SoFi board unanimously agrees that Anthony's deep understanding of technology, consumer and financial businesses make him the perfect fit to be SoFi's CEO."

Hutton, who will become non-executive chairman of the board, added: "We could not be more excited to have someone of his calibre on board."

SoFi's former chief executive, Mike Cagney, was removed last year amid sexual harassment complaints, according to Tech Crunch.

SoFi is a finance company which offers loans to students, mortgages and financial management.

Noto has previously worked for Goldman Sachs and the NFL as chief financial operator. He joined Twitter in July, 2014.

He will officially move to SoFi in March. Twitter said it would replace him with "other members of Twitter's leadership team", As Reportd reported.
