sanitation are the biggest health challenges. Over

The Madagascan economy relies heavily upon
tourism, agriculture and the extractive industries.
In 2011, agriculture accounted for 29% of the
country’s GDP; with manufacturing taking up a
further 15%. Tourism in the country has slowed in
recent years however with a 50% drop in 2009
compared to the previous year. There are
worrying signs in Madagascar though, with 69%
of the population living below the national poverty
line.

$893.84
As of 2004, 54% of Malawians lived under the
poverty line on less than $1 a day. This was
tempered by the fact that in December 2000 the
IMF and a number of individual donors stopped
distributing aid within the region due to concerns
over corruption. Malawi has since however begun
receiving aid again from the IMF’s Heavily
Indebted Poor Countries programme; as well as
through the Millennium Challenge Corporation
from the United States. Agriculture and services
make up a huge chunk of GDP, accounting for
35% and 46% respectively. Another issue faced by
the country is a shortage of foreign exchange
which led to Malawi being unable to pay for some
imports. This was due to investment falling by
23% in 2009.

$853.43
The economy of Niger is not helped by the fact
that 80% of the country’s land mass is taken up
the Sahara Desert. The country has also suffered
greatly from political instability and an inequality
deeply entrenched into Niger society. After
electing a new government in 2000 the country
was forced to accept enhanced debt relief from
the International Monetary Fund under their
Highly Indebted Poor Countries programme. This
was due to the fact the Niger treasury was quite
literally empty.

6.) Central African Republic –
GDP per capita: $827.93
Central African Republic has significant mineral
reserves, including; gold, diamonds, uranium and
crude oil. Of these, diamonds account for up to
55% of the country’s export revenues. The 2010
UNDP Human Development Report ranked Central
African Republic in the bottom four nations of its
Human Development Index. Whilst the country has
seen a minor decrease in those living on less than
$1 a day to 62% they would need to half that in
the next year to reach the goal set out by the
UNDP.

Eritrea’s control of the sea route through the
Suez Canal saw the Italians colonize the country
in 1869 almost immediately after the route had
been established. During the Second World War,
Eritrea was conquered again this time by the
British in 1941. Gross Domestic Product growth in
the country has been consistently low, averaging
1.2 percent throughout the last decade and a high
of 2 percent.

Liberia was one of only a few countries in Africa
not colonized by Europeans, instead being
founded by freed slaves from America. The slaves
who founded the country took their inspiration
from the federal model of government used in the
United States of America. After a coup in 1980 led
to the removal of the president, Liberia was
involved in a destabilizing civil war which raged
on seeing hundreds of thousands killed before a
2003 peace deal. This led to a democratic
election in 2005 and a period of stability. The
country is still feeling the hangover of civil war
however with approximately 85% of the population
living on less than $1 a day.

3.) Burundi – GDP per capita:
$648.58
Burundi is another country almost constantly in a
state of tribal and civil war. This coupled with; a
poor legal system, economy and education
system, and no ports, means the country has
never been able to create a stable GDP. A
staggering 93% of Burundi’s exports revenues
come from selling coffee. Meanwhile, 80% of
Burundians live in poverty; whilst 57% of children
under the age of five suffer from chronic
malnutrition.
2.) Zimbabwe – GDP per
capita: $589.46
Not only is Zimbabwe one of the poorest
countries in the world; but it has the lowest life
expectancy in the world with men living until
thirty-seven and women just thirty-four. This
owes in part to the fact that 20.1% of the
population suffer from HIV/AIDS. Whilst
Zimbabwe is struggling to deal with its health
issues, the government issued a one hundred
trillion dollar bill in January 2009 to try and ease
the economic situation.

Congo – GDP per capita:

Democratic Republic of Congo was known as
Zaire until 1997, and became the poorest country
in the world as recently as 2010. The country was
ravaged by the Second Congo War which began in
1998. Over seven foreign armies were involved in
the conflict over the time it took place, with 5.4
million people losing their lives including civilians.
An interesting fact relating to the Democratic
Republic of Congo is that it is the largest country
speaking French in the world with a population of
seventy-one million. That’s six million more than
France.

Here’s the top 10 Richest Countries in Africa as of 2014 ranked by GDP per capita:

10) Algeria – $7,500 (GDP per capita)
Algeria is the second largest oil producer in Africa, and this accounts for the majority of the country’s economy generating 70% of total budget receipts. In addition to this the country has an enormous supply in a number of minerals, including iron, lead, copper, zinc and mercury.

9) Namibia – $8,200 (GDP per capita)
Whilst Namibia is one of the richest countries in Africa income is not evenly distributed with half of the country’s population living below the poverty line. The economy is dominated by the production of minerals with Namibia being one of the richest places in Africa for strategic minerals. This is shown by their position as one of the world’s highest quality producers of diamonds.

Tunisia – $9,900 (GDP per capita)
The Tunisian economy is dominated by mining, manufacturing and tourism, which portrays the diverse economic market within the country. The recent rise in tourism owes much to the country’s position on the Mediterranean cost and the cheap cost in comparison to European countries that border the Mediterranean. Another factor is the different cultural experience which has seen an influx of Western tourists who want to experience a vibrant, yet different, culture..

7) Libya – $11,497 (GDP per capita)
Libya’s position as one of Africa’s most prosperous countries owes much to two defining factors. Firstly, the country has huge oil revenues which, coupled with a small population in comparison to its rivals, means it has a high GDP per person in comparison to the rest of Africa. Similarly to South Africa, Libya is also defined as an upper-middle economy by South Africa.

6) South Africa – $11,914 (GDP per capita)
South Africa is a dual economy with one of the world’s highest inequality rates, owing much to the history of exclusion within the country. The South African economy is the second largest in Africa and the 28th-largest in the world, leading to the World Bank to rank it as an upper-middle income economy. This is however contrary to the fact that at least a quarter of the country’s population is unemployed and living on less than US$1.25 per day.

5) Mauritius – $16,100 (GDP per capita)
Mauritius place on this list owes very much to the attitude of its government. Since the country’s independence in 1968, successions of governments have implemented free-market economics which have in turn created a highly competitive market. With no natural resources to exploit Mauritius economy has relied heavily on tourism, information technology and financial services. A booming economy has seen the country also attract lots of foreign investors, seeing the World Bank rank it as a middle income economy.

4) Botswana – $17,101 (GDP per capita)
Since gaining independence in 1966, Botswana has had one of the world’s highest economic growth rates. This has seen Botswana transformed from one of the poorest countries in the world to a competent middle income economy, owing to stringent fiscal discipline and management by the country’s government. Whilst the economy is dominated by diamond mining, there are also strong farming, tourism and financial service sectors. Although the country is in rude financial health; there is still has a long way to go to deal with HIV/AIDS within Botswana, with the country having the second highest adult prevalence rate in the world.

3) Gabon – $20,612 (GDP per capita)
Although Gabon has declining oil production, it is still the fifth largest oil producer in Sub—Saharan Africa. An over reliance on the oil sector for the past 40 years has seen the country attempt to develop a more diverse economy, to little success so far. The high oil production within the country has helped them to develop and advance the education system within the country. Although with oil reserves running low maintenance of the school system is beginning to suffer with no alternative funding yet found.

2) Equatorial Guinea – $23,370 (GDP per capita)
Equatorial Guinea owes its high position on this list to a small population of just 736,296, which has also helped it to 32nd in the world in terms of gross domestic product per capita. Whilst the country has a relatively low population it has enormous oil reserves and is one of the largest oil producers in Africa. Whilst many would believe this to be reflected in the country’s living conditions, inequality is rife within the country with the government and officials renowned for corrupt behavior. This means that whilst the country may rank highly on this list the majority of the population actually live under the poverty line.

1) Seychelles – $25,229 (GDP per capita)
Due to a respectable gross domestic product per capita the Seychelles is ranked as the richest country in Africa in our list. The country is made up of one-hundred and fifteen small islands with a population of less than one-hundred thousand. This owes much to the ample opportunity for shipments and fishing due to a plethora of coastline. Furthermore, the country has long been known as a getaway for the rich and famous meaning it contains numerous hotels and shopping resorts.

any other smartphone out there, and HTC has
honestly out done themselves as far as we're
concerned.
A closer look
Their screen sizes aren't that far off from each
other, the iPhone 6 comes in at 4.7 inches, the
Galaxy S5 checks in at 5.1 inches whereas the
One M8 sneaks in the middle with a 5 inch
screen. However, the iPhone doesn't have the
1080p screen which is a luxury shared by the
other two. It should also be mentioned that the
iPhone's pixel density is also much lower than
its competitors even though it has a much
smaller screen.
The same can be said for the cameras, Apple
could've done a much better job at it. The
iPhone 6 is able to make a 1080p video but the
S5 is already beyond that, clocking in at a 4k
video. HTC One M8 however decided to stick to
the 1080p when it comes to videos. But when it
comes to front cameras it's a whole different
story, both the S5 and One M8 have much better
front cameras than the iPhone 6 with both of
them being able to provide 1080p videos over
the iPhone's 720p.
And when it comes to things like weight and
actual dimensions of the smartphone, the iPhone
surely dominates the market, coming in at
around 80% the weight of HTC's One M8 and
around 89% of Samsung's Galaxy S5, Apple
surely knows how to make their devices sleeker,
lighter and smaller than their competitors.
The iPhone runs on Apple's own iOS whereas
both the S5 and One M8 have Android's KitKat.
As far as performance and the numbers go
however, Apple's still sticking with a dual core
processor clocked at 2 GHz for the iPhone 6.
HTC and Samsung went for the quad core
processors clocked at 2.3 GHz and 2.5 GHz
respectively.
Conclusions
Nothing really matters at the end of the day,
android lovers will go for the Android phones and
Apple fans will pick up the new model as soon
as possible. This year's iPhones were a little bit
disappointing to say the least, regardless of
whether or not you're interested in Apple's
devices nearly everyone was expecting a lot
more power behind the sleek designs this year.
And even without the latest technology in
processors, the iPhone still remains one of the
best phones out there purely because of the
operating system. Android doesn't have the
stability of the iOS but it's got the features, app
markets as well as an entire community devoted
to developing the operating systems for their
favorite smartphones.

The University of Ilorin can't stop making
History. After making the top front in this year's
Webometric ranking. The University has made
the first 20 list of African best Universities. The
Vice-Chancellor of the great University, Prof.
AbdulGaniyu Ambali, has announced that for the
first time in history, a Nigerian university was
ranked 20th in Africa and 1,842nd in the world.
"I am happy to restate that a remarkable thing
happened to the Nigerian university system this
year, courtesy of UNILORIN.
"For the first time since ranking began, a
Nigerian university was ranked among the best
2,000 universities in the world", he said.
The professor of veterinary medicine, who spoke
with reporters in Ilorin, the Kwara State capital,
on the institution's 30th convocation lecture,
said the latest ranking of international colleges
and universities placed the university first in
Nigeria, 20th in Africa and the 1,842nd in the
world.

It's a common grumble that
politicians' lifestyles are far removed

Jose Mujica is his name, The 79 year old won
the 2009 presidential election as the candidate
of the Broad Front and took office as Uruguan
President on 1 March 2010.
Laundry is strung outside the house. The water
comes from a well in a yard, overgrown with
weeds. Only two police officers and Manuela, a
three-legged dog, keep watch outside.
This is the residence of the president of
Uruguay, Jose Mujica, whose lifestyle clearly
differs sharply from that of most other world
leaders.
Mujica has achieved an international image as
"the world's poorest president" without
precedent for almost any Uruguayan of the last
few decades.
He has been described as "the world's
'humblest' president", due to his austere lifestyle
and his donation of around 90 percent of his
$12,000 (£7,500) monthly salary to charities
that benefit poor people and small entrepreneurs.
President Mujica has shunned the luxurious
house that the Uruguayan state provides for its
leaders and opted to stay at his wife's
farmhouse, off a dirt road outside the capital,
Montevideo.
The president and his wife work the land
themselves, growing flowers.
This austere lifestyle - and the fact that Mujica
donates about 90% of his monthly salary,
equivalent to $12,000 (£7,500), to charity - has
led him to be labelled the poorest president in
the world.
"I may appear to be an eccentric old man… But
this is a free choice."
"I've lived like this most of my life," he says,
sitting on an old chair in his garden, using a
cushion favoured by Manuela the dog.
