Breaking News;Youths beat DPO as bus kills two in Ondo

Peter Dada, Akure

Residents of Ilara Mokin, in the Ifedore Local Government Area of Ondo State reportedly went haywire on Sunday following the death of two members of the community who were crushed to death by a commercial bus.

An eyewitness said the deceased, who had yet-to-be identified, were on a motorcycle on the Ilesa-Akure Expressway when the 18-passenger commercial bus crushed them to death.

The eyewitness said the accident caused a protest by the youths of the community who allegedly set the bus ablaze and attacked the security agents in the area.

It was gathered that the Divisional Police Officer in the town, Mr Wole Ogodo, was attacked and beaten up while trying to calm the angry protesters

The eyewitness said, “The two men who were indigenes of the town were crushed to death by the bus that was travelling to Lagos. This infuriated the people of the town because they believed that the driver of the bus was reckless.

“They immediately organised a protest and burnt down the bus and blocked the highway, they also attacked policemen as they tried to stop them. The DPO was beaten up.”

It was learnt that there was a gridlock on the expressway following the protests and it reportedly took the policemen and the men of the Ondo State Sector Command of the Federal Road Safety Corps several hours to clear the road.

Many motorists were stranded while the protested lasted, but some took alternative routes to their various destinations.

The state Police Public Relations Officer, Femi Joseph, who confirmed the incident, alleged that the protesters took the laws into their own hands, adding that policemen had restore normalcy to the expressway.

President Muhammadu Buhari will on Sunday depart Abuja for Lome, Republic of Togo, to participate in two high-level meetings.

The Senior Special Assistant to the President on Media and Publicity, Garba Shehu, disclosed this in a statement made available to journalists on Saturday.

On arrival in Lome, Shehu said the President would have an interactive session with the Nigerian community based in Togo at the Nigerian Embassy.

He added that on Monday, Buhari will attend the Joint ECOWAS/ECCAS Summit.

He said the summit would deliberate on common security threats to countries in West Africa and members of the Economic Community of Central African States with a view to forging concerted strategies in tackling the menace of terrorism, trans-border crimes and other forms of violent extremism.

He recalled that the President had expressed support for the proposed ECOWAS/ECCAS Summit when he received the current Chair of the ECOWAS Authority of Heads of State and Government, President Faure Gnassingbe of Togo on June 29, 2018 in Katsina.

“Terrorism now transcends international boundaries, and no country can combat the scourge alone,” Buhari was qouted to have said...Read More...

Nigerian Government scraps HND certificate makes new rules for polytechnics...

Nigerian Government has scrapped Award of HND Certificates by Polytechnics.

The decision was reached at the Federal Executive Council, FEC, on Wednesday where the approval of a comprehensive reform of Nigeria’s tertiary education system was made.

In effect, the award of HND will be limited to only the students currently admitted for the programmes.

Also, all the programmes currently being run by polytechnics, which are not technology-based, and which are about 70 percent, will be scrapped.

Under the new rule, the polytechnics will now become campuses of the proximate universities with the Vice Chancellors of those universities appointing provosts for the polytechnics, subject to the ratification of the Universities Councils.

The polytechnics will now be limited to the award of the National Diploma (ND) while those desirous of further education will be awarded the Bachelor of Technology (B. Tech) by the proximate university.

To kick-start, the new policy, the nation’s two most...Read More...
