BLINDNESS-by Amadi Dsk Franklin
The gift of sight and the ability to see is one treasure that can never be overrated. To be able to see is preferred to being, crippled, deaf of dumb. This is so because any of this unfortunate reality has got some form of alternative. For Example, a crippled person could get mobility aid via wheel chair and other technologically advanced tools also a deaf person may use visible gestures to pass and receive information as well as the dumb. But the blind is at everyone’s mercy. Hence the importance of sight is too pertinent to be ignored by any reasonable person.
Blindness is a condition or a state where one is not able to see, sometimes permanently. Having said this, it is important to state that blindness does not occur to dead people. You first have to be alive before you could be deemed blind. Also blindness affects the object of sight and vision meaning there is a tool with which one is expected to see.
Everything that must move, must obtain sight and vision. Sight meaning: the ability to see through while vision is the desired point of target or intention. The vehicle’s head lamp is its eyes at night as nobody can confidently drive at night without some form of light not to talk of no lights at all.

A 90 year old man in Nigeria praying for long life, has some questions to answer. Because he has lived over 8 decades and has a fair understanding of life (the good, the bad and the ugly). Also in this time and age, a young chap in the age range of 20-45, still going about with the intention of getting a job without alternative means to back up, is the new definition of BLINDNESS.

The way the world has evolved in the last 4 decades and the way the trend is running leaves no doubt that if something is not done very fast, the prediction that Nigeria will be the world capital of poverty will soon be a reality.

Become more aware of your space and be deliberate about a beautiful future. The reality is that some people will just must be other people’s secretaries, gatemen, bodyguard, cleaners, cooks, laundry staff, drivers, Personal Assistants etc. Also some will be the Big Boss, Entrepreneurs, Estate Owners, Philanthropist, Business Tourist, and Great Leaders.

It is no news to state that what we are today is a function of what we did consciously or unconsciously yesterday. If this is true, then we must be deliberate about the choices and actions we take bearing in mind the result it will bring now and in the future.

Many times we shy away from the reality that stares us in the face and excuse our contributions to our ordeal and heaping the blame on those before us. Like the saying “You are never in control of how and where you were born but how you live and die is totally up to you. The statement just read if critically accessed is true and so it is for all races regardless of colour, creed, race and religion.

In Nigeria today, it is a pity to see that everything that used to be our pride in the past today stands as our shame. Going memory lane you could recall how leadership was more of service rather than selfish ambitions. How nation building was the focus regardless of tribe and region. Ethnicity was alien to the national discus. People could clearly work and get commensurate reward for work done. It did not matter the trace of your name but in the effectiveness and quality of service that you bring.

The Education sector was the envy of many in the sub-saharan and western countries and Nigerians could hold their head up high with gait and pride. Foreigners were stampeding themselves to get to Nigeria. Who cared about oil? There were viable options that clearly showed how nature has blessed and endowed us with so much natural and mineral resources not to mention the ever viable human capital. Nigeria was the first African country to own a TV station, and her universities ranked top amongst her contemporaries in the world. What to eat or drink was not an issue because there was enough to eat, drink and export.

Everything seems great and going well for us until we missed it and lost it. We now ask questions begging for answers; where did we get it wrong and for how long will this be?
A nation that once prides herself in food sufficiency is now bedeviled by hunger and starvation yet there are people who still work very hard not for the future but just to survive for today while they hope for tomorrow. The future with the current structure does not look promising and bright; sending most of her teaming young population into the unavoidable option of exodus into foreign lands with the hope of securing a better future.

We were once great and the envy of nations. Our naira stood taller in the forex market. Our leaders where respected amongst their equals. The green passport was a proud asset to flaunt. What happened to us?
