The police in Ebonyi State have arrested a man, Simon Ugbala, who on Monday allegedly killed his wife, two children and four others with a machete. He injured several people. The suspect, who was believed to be mentally-deranged, was alleged to have gone berserk, killing and injuring people. He later ran away into the bush. Later about 200 youths searched for the man in conjunction with the police. The suspect was said to have appeared in the community the next day and attacked more people, killing one other person, which necessitated the involvement of the military. The news of his re-appearance forced parents to withdraw their children from schools. The Nation learnt that the combined efforts paid off, as Ugbala was arrested yesterday and handed over to the police. Spokesperson Loveth Odah confirmed the incident. She said the suspect was arrested by a combined team of the Police, Army and youths. Odah said the suspect had been taken to the Federal Teaching Hospital, Abakaliki (FETHA), for psychiatric examination and evaluation. She advised residents to take people suspected to be mentally-deranged to hospital, to prevent calamity. |
The candidate of the Allied Congress Party of Nigeria (ACPN) and a former Minister of Education, Oby Ezekwesili has withdrawn from the Presidential race. Ezekwesili said she would now be focusing on helping to build a Coalition for a viable alternative to the All Progressive Congress (APC) and People’s Democratic Party (PDP) in the 2019 general elections. She announced her withdrawal in a series of tweets on her official and verified twitter handles on Thursday morning. She said, “Following the reactions of Nigerian citizens at home and abroad to the 2019 Presidential Debate held on Saturday 19 January 2019, and after extensive consultations with leaders from various walks of life across the country over the past few days, I have decided to step down from the presidential race and focus on helping to build a Coalition for a viable alternative to the #APCPDP in the 2019 general elections. This coalition for a viable alternative has now more than ever before become an urgent mission for and on behalf of the citizenry” |
Former President Olusegun Obasanjo got a bloody nose yesterday for his blistering criticism of President Muhammadu Buhari. Vice President Yemi Osinbajo led the way with a defence of his integrity over the TraderMoni, saying Obasanjo was either ignorant of the workings of the scheme of just been mischievous. The former president should be ignored, All Progressives Congress (APC) stalwart Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu said. The scathing remarks by Obasanjo on the Buhari administration were in bad faith, Tinubu, who is co-Chairman of the APC Presidential Campaign Council, told a crowd of party faithful in Maiduguri, the Borno State capital. APC National Chairman Adams Oshiomhole described the Obasanjo years as an era of impunity, impeachment of governors and bickering between him (Obasanjo) and his deputy, Atiku Abubakar. Tinubu spoke at the inauguration of the President Buhari re-election campaign in the Northeast—on a day more Nigerians knocked Obasanjo for his statement. Many of those who reacted said the former leader lacked the moral latitude to criticise the incumbent who, according to them, has been trying to clean up the mess left behind by the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) between 1999 and 2015. Obasanjo, who was president on the PDP’s platform between 1999 and 2017, alleged in a 16-page statement on Sunday that President Buhari was executing a succession plan like the late Head of State Gen. Sani Abacha. Among those who commented on the Obasanjo remarks are: Former Alliance for Democracy (AD) National Chairman AbdulKarim Daiyabu; the Buhari Media Organisation (BMO); the Osun State chapter of the APC; Yoruba Ronu Leadership Forum and the Katsina State Commissioner for Information, Culture & Home Affairs, Hamza Brodo. They said the former president is not being truthful. According to Tinubu, Obasanjo was not happy with the feat attained by the APC government in the clean-up of the 16-year mess created by the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP). He said such criticisms from Obasanjo, who he described as an “expired politician”, will not stop the electorate from renewing President Buhari’s mandate for another four years. Tinubu said: “When we came on board in 2015, we promised Nigerians that we were going to turn the ship of this country to the right direction and we have done that. “We are sweeping webs of collateral corruption to give Nigerians a new life, new home and a solid foundation; that is what President Buhari is doing and we are 100 per cent behind him. “President Muhammadu Buhari has been upright, firm and has been steady, focused with great vision for the betterment and progress of this country. ”I can hear the other expired leaders like Obasanjo, ranting and lying; don’t believe him, don’t trust him; he is expired. ”We can recall the rigging in the 2003 general elections under Obasanjo. We also knew what happened in 2007 under President Obasanjo. “Ninety-five per cent of you must come out and vote en masse for Buhari because no other President has upheld democratic principles like President Buhari. “In 1999, we gave it to him but he could not one day recognise MKO’s mandate of June 12. Again, when he came back into power, we asked him for the recognition, he failed. Who did it? President Buhari declared June 12 as national Democracy Day to honour the late MKO Abiola.” Tinubu added that Buhari was committed to upholding the rule of law and entrenching democratic principles. He urged the electorate to give him their mandate for the second time. Oshiomhole scored Buhari’s administration very high in security, saying, “under the past administration, 24 local governments were under the control of Boko Haram”, noting that under Buhari, all the local governments had been liberated. “No local government area is under the control of the insurgents. You have gain control of the 774 councils. We still have security challenegs but the arrogance, impunity that Nigeria is wallowing in had become a thing of the past. “Everything that we are in today started in Obasanjo’s regime. Do-or-die politics was Obasanjo’s legacies. Today, the era of impeaching state governors is over. The era of quarrelling with vice president and fighting in the market place is gone. “The era of withholding funds meant for council areas as it was done to monthly allocations of Lagos State local government areas is over. These are the legacies of the Obasanjo-led administration,” Oshiomhole said. The APC chair accused Obasanjo of introducing corruption into the polity. According to Oshomole, members of the National Assembly were bribed into supporting the botched third term agenda under Obasanjo. He urged President Buhari to probe what transpired in that era when re-elected. Residents brushed aside security challenges in Borno and Yobe states to turn out in their large numbers to join the APC presidential campaign train that stopped over in Maiduguri and Damaturu. Hordes of APC supporters in the two states converged on the Ramat Square in Maiduguri and the August 27 Stadium in Damaturu where President Muhammadu Buhari presented his scorecard and solicited support for re-election on February 16. President Buhari’s campaign train drove into Maiduguri some few minutes after 10am, greeted by a mammoth crowd on the major streets. In Damaturu, the Yobe State capital, the President’s convoy was impeded by an army of supporters who took over the roads. Supporters at the jammed August 27 stadium broke into cheers, singing as the President alighted from a black Sport Utility Vehicle (SUV). In Maiduguri, President Buhari was received by Governor Kashim Shettima in the company of former governors and National Assembly members. |

In the light of the protracted strike by members of the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), Afrobeat musician Seun Kuti has advised the political elites to ‘serve’ their children. He took to his Instagram account to offer the advice. He opined that resolving the protracted strike is of more importance than matters such as attending political campaigns or interfering in hijab crises in secular school The banner which he posted read: ‘Your children aren’t attending school but u are attending political rally. Are u maaaaad?’ It is the season of politicking in the country as Nigerians prepare for the 2019 general elections. But many public tertiary institutions including universities and polytechnics have been on strike since December last year, a position which did not go down well with Seun, who comes from a long line of political and social activists including his late father and founder of Afrobeats, Fela Kuti and his grandmother, Mrs Funmilayo Ransome Kuti. “Until we are ready to serve our children and not just raise them, we shall never understand national development,” he said. “How hijab crisis in a secular school can create more outrage than the closure of our university for months is the proof we need to know that we are willing to serve everything else but our children. Learn to serve your children not just raise them! #getthesax” |
Alleged conspiracy by some retired generals to frustrate the re-election of President Muhammadu Buhari next month is doomed to fail, the National Chairman of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Comrade Adams Oshiomhole, vowed yesterday. Oshiomhole said in Minna, the Niger State capital, that the future of Nigeria is not in the hands of such generals, but in the hands of the majority of Nigerians. He spoke during the party’s presidential campaign at the Trade Fair complex,Minna. Buhari at the rally pledged that to continue to implement people-oriented policies and programmes if he was re-elected. But the APC campaign team was overwhelmed by the time it arrived Jos later in the day so much so that the President could not address them. Hitting out at the retired generals during the Minna rally,Oshiomhole said: “Many of the retired generals are ganging up against President Buhari, that he will not do eight years while they did more than eight years. “I remember they did it before, did it in the past. “But this time, the plan will not work. “The future of Nigeria is not in the hands of retired generals or former heads of state. It is in the hands of the general people.” He mentioned no names. He said such retired generals were not happy thatBuhari is fighting corruption. He accused the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) presidential candidate, Alhaji Atiku Abubakar of banking on rigging to win the forthcoming election. His words: “everywhere PDP goes, they are saying the elections will be rigged. “We need to play those video recordings of where Obasanjo and Atiku said that the election is a win or die matter for PDP.” He said for those of them in the APC “we remain firm believers in one man one vote, one woman, one vote, and one former head of state, one vote.” Also addressing the rally,President Buhari promised to embark on massive infrastructural development across the country if re-elected on February 16 . He said that arrangement had been concluded for the construction of modern standard gauge rail line from Minna to Abuja, and to Baro Inland Water Port to enhance socio economic growth of the state. He said a new Lagos – Ibadan – Minna – Kaduna and Kano rail line is being constructed while Mokwa- Jebba federal road is ready. ” We will ensure the completion of the ongoing Zungeru Hydro Power Project and all ongoing federal government projects across the country,” he said. So much was the crowd that for over one hour,APC leaders pleaded in vain for them to allow the President speak. Buhari had to return to Abuja. He later extended appreciation to the people of Plateau State for turning out in such large numbers to welcome him in Jos. His Special Adviser on Media and Publicity, Femi Adesina, said:”so much was the turnout that the President could not eventually address the crowd. “After waiting for about an hour, with the melee not receding, but rather increasing in tempo and fervour, President Buhari received illustrious Plateau citizens who were crossing to the All Progressives Congress (APC) from other political parties, waved at the appreciative crowd, and left for Abuja. |

Minister for Environment, Alhaji Sulaiman Hassan, has assured President Muhammadu Buhari that Gombe electorate would overwhelm him with their support and vote for All Progressives Congress (APC) in the 2019 general election. Hassan, who conveyed the assurances in Kaltungo town of Kaltungo Local Government Area of the state during the flag-off of APC state campaign, expressed optimism that APC would sweep all the positions at all levels through fair and credible election. He said: “The crowd you have seen is the true reflection of what will be obtainable at the general election. Gombe is now home for APC, because we have seen, felt and touched the developmental projects and achievements recorded by the present government; therefore, we are all going to vote for APC.” That assurance came just as a chieftain of the party, Dr. Jamilu Isyaku Gwamna, donated a Marcopolo luxury bus to enhance campaigns for President Buhari and the party’s gubernatorial candidate, Alhaji Inuwa Yahaya, in the forthcoming polls. While fielding questions from journalists shortly after the handing over of the bus, Gwamna said the donation was informed by his pledge to ensure that President Buhari and Inuwa win the elections. The APC bigwig had on October 2, 2018, promised to support the re-election of Buhari and ensure victory for Yahaya in the state. He explained that the fight against corruption, prudent management of the resources of Nigeria and the repositioning of Nigeria on the diplomatic map in good light are some of the attributes that endear APC presidential candidate to anyone that loves Nigeria. The All Progressives Congress (APC), says it has better campaign timetable for forthcoming election than any other political party. Mr Alex Kalejaiye, the APC Publicity Secretary in Ondo state said this on Tuesday in a statement. Kalejaiye was reacting to a statement credited to presidential candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party(PDP), Atiku Abubakar that the APC presidential candidate is not campaigning because his party planned to rig the election. “The APC views the statement as an indication that the PDP and its flag bearer are insincere, confused and are at their wits end. It was a defeatist dripping. “Political observers and generality of Nigerians are well aware that President Muhammadu Buhari did launched his campaign in Akwa-Ibom State; and later pulled an unprecedented crowd when he stormed Bauchi. He is being expected in Delta State, in continuation of his structured campaign. “For benefit of doubt, the APC Presidential Campaign Council has rolled out itineraries of how the party’s campaign in various states will hold. “It is imperative to remind them that the APC is not an appendage of any party; it is well-organised with coherent plans and programmes to guide its activities. “The APC has a well-thought out itinerary for its campaign, and will follow duly the time-table, irrespective of what any sinking party feels or says,” he said. According to him, Nigerians should take stock of projects so far embarked upon by the administration, aimed at ameliorating and neutralising the woes imposed on the country by the past administrations in 16 years. He added that APC desired to see Nigeria where the citizens are well secured with surplus of food. “Also our desire in APC will pave the way for export where there is stability on the political and economic scene, coupled with an improved ease of doing business and these will naturally pull investors in their numbers. A country of next level of prosperity for all,”he said.(NAN) |
PRESIDENT Muhammadu Buhari and Vice President Yemi Osinbajo yesterday led other top government officials and Service chiefs to lay wreaths in honour of soldiers, who died during national service and international assignments. The ceremony was to mark the 2019 Armed Forces Remembrance Day. January 15th, every year, is dedicated to remembering and appreciating surviving military men, who have retired from active service. It was the fourth time President Buhari as the Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces was laying the wreath in a democratic setting. Buhari was clad in white ‘Babanriga’, just like Osinbajo, Senate President Bukola Saraki and House of Representatives Speaker Yakubu Dogara. The ceremony at the National Arcade in the Three Arms Zone in Abuja came after over a month that the 2019 Armed Forces Remembrance Day emblem and Appeal Fund was launched by the President. The brief ceremony started around 11a.m. when Buhari arrived at the National Arcade and inspected the guard of honour. Christian and Muslim prayers were offered for the departed souls and the nation. One-minute silence was observed in honour of the departed souls and there was gun salute during the wreath-laying ceremony. Osinbajo, Saraki, Dogara, Chief Justice of Nigeria (CJN) Walter Onnoghen and Minister of Defence Dan Ali Mansur were among top government officials who also laid wreaths. Others that laid wreaths include Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Minister Mohammed Bello, Chief of Army Staff Tukur Buratai and other service chiefs, Inspector-General of Police (IGP) Ibrahim Idris (performing his last official role). Buhari also signed the register and led the dignitaries to release white pigeons at the no-speech-making ceremony. Top government officials, including cabinet members, attended the event. |

There is anxiety in government circles over Labour’s plan to go on strike. The action is to push the demand for a new minimum wage. But the Federal Government has invited workers’ representatives to a meeting tomorrow in a move to avert the impending industrial action. Labour is angry that the Presidency is yet to transmit the New National Minimum Wage Bill to the National Assembly. Labour has demanded N30, 000 for the least paid worker. The federal and state governments are offering N24, 000 and N22, 500. Nigerian Labour Congress (NLC) General Secretary Dr. Peter Ozo-Eson told The Nation on phone yesterday that Labour will not embark on an industrial action secretly. According to him, the workers’ union has asked its state councils to hold rallies in city centres beginning from January 8 to sensitise Nigerians on the looming action. Ozo-Eson said: “The NEC approved that the protests should hold in all state capitals and the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Abuja on 8th January, 2019, and mandates all industrial unions and state councils to fully mobilise workers and coordinate with other labour unions for this mother of all protests. The excuse that the National Assembly is on break does not hold water as the report of the tripartite committee has been with the President for about two months. “Was the National Assembly on recess when the report was submitted? Didn’t the House of Representatives adopt a resolution calling on the President to transmit the bill? “The notice expired on 31st December, 2018. When it was given, was the National Assembly on recess? On whether there were moves to stop the impending strike, Ozo-Esan said: “We don’t do strike in secret. When we want to do our strike, we will publicly inform Nigerians. What we have directed state councils all over the country to do is that on January 8, they should hold sensitisation and mobilisation rallies across the country. “That we have put in the public domain through our communique. When we want to give another directive, we will do so.” But the government has invited the Labour leadership to a meeting on Friday at the office of the Labour & Employment Minister, Dr. Chris Ngige the office of the Minister of on Friday to address issues raised by Labour and to brief them on efforts being made by the government. A statement signed by the Director of Press in the Ministry of Labour & Employment, Samuel Olowokoore, reads “Towards nipping in the bud threat of national industrial action by the Nigerian Labour Congress (NLC) over the transmission of the New National Minimum Wage to the National Assembly, the Minister of Labour & Employment Sen. Chris Ngige, is scheduled to hold a meeting with the Executives of the Organised Labour”. The Nation learnt that, the ministers of Finance and that Budget & National Planning are also expected at the meeting scheduled to begin from 10.30am. Dr Ngige was quoted as saying that the Attorney-General of the Federation was studying the draft bill submitted by the tripartite committee along with the report to the President with a view to coming up with an executive bill which will be transmitted to National Assembly. It was also learnt that the government may have reached out to some influential Nigerians and former Labour leaders, including All Progressives Congress (APC) National Chairman Adams Oshiomhole to prevail on workers to drop the threat strike. Oshiomhole recently threw his weight behind Labour in its quest for have a new National minimum wage, saying Nigeria can afford to pay workers what he described as living wage. |
WITH a threat by the Buhari Campaign Organization plans to sue the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and its presidential candidate, Atiku Abubakar, the battle between the two major contenders in next month’s presidential poll may soon shift to the courtroom. The BCO yesterday asked the PDP and Atiku to show within seven days proof of their allegations that President Buhari and members of his family own substantial shares in Etisalat Nigeria and Keystone Bank. Relying on sources, Atiku had in a statement issued in Abuja last week by his Special Assistant on Public Communication, Phrank Shaibu, claimed that members of the first family had become big players in the financial sector after acquiring mouth-watering shares worth $1.916 billion (equivalent to N307.5 billion) as well as purchasing about N3 billion worth of shares in the new Pakistani Islamic Bank. The PDP Presidential Campaign Organisation called for an investigation into the alleged diversion of military funds for the acquisition of shares in 9Mobile in the telecom firm and the bank. But the BCO said that the allegations made by Atiku and his party, beyond mere politicking, were too weighty to be ignored or considered as electioneering gimmicks n a reaction by its Director of Communications & Strategic Planning, Mallam Gidado Ibrahim, the BCO said the PDP and its candidate should be ready for a court action. Relying on the provisions of the law, the President’s support group maintained that the ball was in Atiku’s court to provide evidence of the allegations of sleaze against Buhari and his family because the burden of proof always lies with the person who lays charges. Ibrahim said in a statement: “The BCO has been taking note of the smear campaign mounted against President Muhammadu Buhari by the PDP and its presidential candidate, Alhaji Atiku Abubakar, in which they accused the first family of owning shares in Keystone Bank with total assets of $1.916 billion (equivalent to N307.5 billion) and Etisalat Nigeria, as well as purchasing about ¦ 3 billion worth of shares in the new Pakistani Islamic Bank. “These are very weighty allegations and we are not saying the former vice president and his party have no right to blow the whistle, especially under an administration with a whistleblowing policy in place. “But following the provisions of the law, the burden of proof (onu probandi) is always on the person who brings a claim or alleges. “We therefore urge Atiku and his party, PDP, to show proof that the President and members of his family have shares in these companies. “At least, with such evidence, they would have done great service to Nigerians by exposing corruption. But if they fail to do so within seven days, the BCO will be left with no other option than to drag them to court on behalf of President Buhari where they will be compelled by the law to provide evidence or pay for damages.” Reiterating its stance that the opposition should engage in issue-based campaigns rather than resorting to hate speeches and campaign of calumny against the President, the BCO said it showed that the PDP and its standard bearer have nothing to offer Nigerians. Ibrahim continued: “Atiku is certainly feeling the heat of facing reality and has resorted to the principle of ‘attack is best form of defence’. There is no hiding place for him. Those who misgoverned the country in the past should be shamed rather than rewarded. That is the only way Nigeria can move forward. “No amount of unfounded allegations against President Muhammadu Buhari can stop Nigerians from voting a leader they have come to trust and believe in for these past years. “We will, however, refrain from making further comment on this issue since it is going to be a subject of litigation. But, if Atiku and his party think this will end on the pages of newspaper, they should prepare to meet us in court if they cannot prove their allegations |
