A lot of small business owners are unaware of the fact that their customers fall outside their friends and family members, this is a fact a lot of them are still having a hard time getting used to. However, the truth is, those who will eventually spend their money on a product or service are strangers. Those who become repeat or loyal customers are those who appreciate the product/service and are willing to spend good money on it. Family and friends may look unsupportive when they do not patronize your business, but instead of getting angry at them, what you can do, is promote your business, especially using social media, so as to reach more people and get your product/service noticed by several millions of people out there. The reason your family and friends will not patronize your business is due to your closeness to them, they do not just see or share the vision of your business or how potentially successful it could become. Even when they do, they will always feel like they are doing you a favour by patronizing your business. Your family members and friends believe that whatever you are selling is not just worth the money you are selling it for. Just ask Jack Ma, the chairman of Ali Baba Group. He was laughed off by his family and friends when he wanted to start his business, but look where he is today. He once stated; “when selling to close friends and family, no matter how much you’re selling to them, they will always feel you are earning their money, no matter how cheap you sell to them, they still wouldn’t appreciate it.” This is very true, but total strangers will always see the value of your product/service and will be willing to pay for it. So, as a business person, where should your concentration lie? Obviously on those who are adding value to your business through their patronage, not your family and friends. Do yourself a favour and promote your business to total strangers. www.lingoafrica.com |

If you were to ask anyone who has had relative success in their business and/or career, s/he will tell you that the best way to become successful in any venture would be to take the form of water. This is one of the best skills in the workplace. You know water always fits into whatever place it is found or poured, it is never stiff but always flexible. Now, how can you become like this in the workplace or business venture? It is simple, be very adapt-friendly. Flourish wherever you are, allow yourself to fit into whatever the situation calls for. If for instance, you are a casting director for a movie production studio, you will be required to work with all kinds of people, and in order to understand if they fit the part you are looking for, you have to be a narrator, a coach, a friendly neighbour, a nerd, just whatever will bring out that acting part of the person. Also, if you are currently running a digital technology company, you should always tailor your company to adapt to whatever tech policies the government of your country will review or pass because times are changing every day. So, what if the government passed and implements a bill that stops your company from using Robotics? Will you pack up the business? No, you would make use of other Artificial Intelligence tools like Machine Learning and Knowledge Reasoning. That is the way to adapt, so, your business and/or career does not get stuck from all the rigidity around you or from you. Be good to yourself and understand that in the world we live today, nothing is static. One example I love to use when discussing this topic with some of my mentees is Nigeria’s film industry. About 25 years ago, films were recorded mostly on video cassettes. Back then, you either had to buy the tapes or rent them from video rental clubs. Soon after that, VCR became the wave. Now, Pay Television like Iroko TV, DSTV and the likes are mostly the medium through which films are aired, as well as cinema distribution. So, you see, nothing stays the same. Take this knowledge with you wherever you go, so, you can adequately build your career. We give examples of adapting in the workplace in this article https://lingoafrica.com/here-are-six-ways-to-adapt-easily-in-the-workplace/ |
Whenever you are creating a CV for a new role in any company/organization, please, always use the Calibri font, as much as possible. It is clear and does have an official look that anyone going through your CV can accept. Also, use keywords that match the job description in your CV. Some companies use the Applicant Tracking System to weed out all CVs without keywords, before assigning a human to check them out. Please, be guided.
