BUILDING STRUCTURES AND RELATIONSHIPS: THE HUMAN SIDE OF CONSTRUCTION MANAGEMENT The construction world is often judged and decided by completed structures, finished roads, and well delivered projects. But we fail to realize that one of the key reasons why we are either successful or struggle on our projects is on-site relationships among the engineers, supervisors, artisans, and contractors. Construction brings people of different backgrounds, religion, skills, and tolerance together to achieve on common goal, that is to execute a project. With people of different personalities coming to build or construct, there is supposed to be an effective way to manage relationships on site. This demands emotional intelligence, respect, and trust for this people. A site where workers are heard and respected tends to experience fewer conflicts [its impossible to on through a project without minor conflicts]. We should give them a voice, and also be all observant on site, as PETER DRUCKER rightly said, “the most important thing in communication is hearing what isn’t said’’. Read emotions and understand behaviours, because in construction unspoken tensions often delay works more than material shortage. Ultimately, projects are built by human hands and those hands works best in an environment of mutual respect and cooperation. “THE BEST CONSTRUCTION MANAGERS DON’T JUST BUILD STRONG STRUCTURES, THE BUILD STRONG RELATIONSHIPS THAT HOLD PROJECT TOGETHER”. |
Construction Management: The Bedrock of Success in Modern Engineering Projects Construction management is a fundamental pillar of all engineering disciplines. It is the driving force behind the success, speed, and quality of engineering projects. This field encompasses critical components such as planning, quality control, cost estimation, risk and safety management, and human resource coordination. Construction management provides strategic solutions to challenges encountered during project execution. However, despite its importance, the discipline remains under-studied in many institutions, particularly in Nigeria. As a result, many modern-day engineers lack the essential managerial skills required to effectively transform ideas into successful outcomes. Brilliant engineering concepts can only become reality when supported by proper management. Without effective construction management, resources such as capital, manpower, and time are wasted, leading to poor quality, reduced credibility, and failure to meet standards. Therefore, it is imperative that construction management be given equal importance as core engineering subjects such as structural analysis. Reinforcing it in the engineering curriculum will greatly enhance the competence of future engineers. In essence, construction management is the bridge between design and execution. It is not just important—it is indispensable to the success of every engineering project. Written by; OLADITI OLADAYO

construction management
