*WHAT IS FISH FARMING?*
Fish farming is the principal form of aquaculture. It involves raising fish or it can be said to be an act of rearing fish for commercial purpose. This involves building the Earthen Pond, Concrete Pond, Tarpaulin Pond, fertilizing the pond, stocking the fingerlings in good water and feeding the Catfish till market size. While there are thousands of fish species all around the globe, only very few of them are viable for commercial fish farming.

*STAGES OF CATFISH PRODUCTION*
Catfish has several stages of production, namely;

*• Hatchery:* this is the stage at which we collect eggs and sperm from the broodstock to hatch new fishes called Fries.

*• Fingerling Production:* This is the raising of catfish nursery from fries to fingerlings (usually 6 weeks).

*•Melange Production:* This is the raising of catfish from fingerlings to three months in which the fish will be at an average weight size of 300-400g. At this stage, it is called mélange.

*• Table Size Production:* It is the raising of catfish from fingerlings to an average weight size of 700g -800kg, usually from 4 to 5 months from fingerlings.

*Grow-out stage:* This is the raising of catfish from fingerlings to an average size of 1kg upward. At this stage, the fishes are in their bigger sizes.

*Broodstock Production:* This is the raising of catfish for the specific purpose of becoming a parent stock for the hatchery. They are raised for one year plus.
Processed Catfish: This is the aspect of processing catfish through the smoking kiln for human consumption. It is the addition of value to the fish.

*CATFISH FARMING.*
*Types Of Catfish Farming*
There are Two (2) Types of Catfish farming, namely;

*1.* Nursery fish farming

*2.* Grow out fish farming.

*1. THE NURSERY FISH FARMING*
This involves the inducement of the female fish to lay eggs which are then fertilized artificially by the male sperm, incubated and hatched. Likewise, the little fishes between a day and two weeks old are known as “fries”. These fries are then nurtured from between three and four weeks into ‘fingerlings’ which is the size suitable for use in the “grow out farming”.

*2. THE GROW OUT FISH FARMING*
This is dependent on the nursery fish farming without the nursery stage. But they can be operated separately by two different farmers or the same farmer can operate both.

*STAGES IN CATFISH FARMING*
I will be grouping the above mentioned stages of catfish farming into Two and they include;

*1. PRIMARY STAGE* ( nursery fish farming stage):= this is between the nursery and the grow out operation, it involves the nurturing of fries three or four weeks to grow into post fingerlings, Post-juvenile and juvenile respectively.

*2. SECONDARY STAGE* (grow out fish farming stage):= this is the period you nurtured the fingerlings for four to five months into grow out size/ table size fish suitable for consumption.
