-------- AUTOMOBILE 101 -------- >>> WHY YOUR STEERING PUMP AND RACK KEEP FAILING <<< Most of us are yet to understand that lubrication fluids have life span. We change our engine oil after few months but we dont know other fluids like steering fluid, brake fluid, transmission fluid all have lifespan and need replacement when due. Now on this case here, its always advisable anytime you want to replace steering pump or rack its good to completely drain the fluid and flush out the system. When these pumps are working they do have tear and wear which produce debris of metal fragments. These fragments circulate inside the steering system from steering pump to the hose to the rack. Now when you have need to replace either the pump or the rack without flushing the system the metal debris still in the left over fluid will corrupt the new pump/rack you just installed. They also block some capillaries through which fluid circulate and these also make the steering system run on higher temperature and burn off the seals. This is same thing that happens in our brake system. The one of our brake system is even worse because brake fluid on its own is more corrosive and naturally hot. When you drain some of these fluids inside a clean container you will notice some shinny sparkling substances inside, those are the worn out metal fragments. This is why when you open the buttom plate of automatic gears you see some 2 or 3 pieces of magnets there, their job is to attract and hold these debris to prevent further circulation.
