Who popularity help, to get a quality smartphone from a popular brand now is far more expensive than getting quality smartphone from a new brand

ote author=aquarius15febb post=136947540]If we’re being real, Nigerians dey love familiar brands. When it comes to phones, na TECNO, Infinix, iPhone and Samsung wey dey reign.

But worldwide, other brands dey trend big time.... like realme, Oppo, Vivo. For example, realme dey ship millions of units every year in Asia and Europe. Same specs wey Redmi dey offer, realme dey give too, sometimes even cheaper.

So the question be:

Why we dey always stick to only the popular brands?

Na lack of awareness?

Na fear of “unknown” brands?

Or na just say we no wan take risk?

Who here don try one of these “newer” brands before? Share your experience make we reason am.
you might disregard popularity but you can't undermine the safety it gives especially when it comes to finding parts for repair, na there the wahala dey for those new brands so!
PhonesRe: Strong Battery Or Good Camera..which One Matters More In Nigeria? by onlyedwin: 11:01pm On Sep 28, 2025

Purpose defines need.

Someone that needs a phone for contents creation that involves capturing of footages should choose camera over battery and use power banks to support the battery of the phone.

Someone that is not a content creator and does not live in an area that enjoys steady power supply should choose battery over camera.
so it's dependent on what they want to use the phone for
PhonesRe: Strong Battery Or Good Camera..which One Matters More In Nigeria? by onlyedwin: 11:00pm On Sep 28, 2025
This quite hard to decide for me, because those are my 2 most important features. So if comes down to picking one I'd just go with battery, having a bad battery to a bad camera is too painful
PhonesRe: Why Your Phone Shouldn’t Get Damaged Easily In 2025 by onlyedwin: 10:58pm On Sep 28, 2025
For real sha cus most smartphone brands have upped their game and they now have features in their phones that can take care of this accidents like IP rating, military grade protection, strong battery and many others so one has an excuse in 2025

Everything matters to me o, I check everything before buying a phone down to colour sef
PhonesRe: Phones In Nigeria: What Really Matters by onlyedwin: 10:53pm On Sep 28, 2025
TeeTaiwo08:
In Nigeria, what really matters in a phone is simple, strong battery (5000mAh+ with fast charging), enough storage & RAM for smooth use, and durability you can trust with service centres around. Make sure it supports our 4G/5G bands, test the camera & screen in real life (not just specs), and always check the IMEI to avoid stolen phones. Mid-range devices usually give the best value, and if it’s a used phone, test everything and reset it before paying. At the end, a good phone here must handle NEPA wahala, heavy use, and still be easy to fix👌.
I love you take in this, this all that matters when buying a phone

You took the battery issue personal, and so did the brands! That shift from 'I must carry a power bank' to 'I forgot my charger and I'm fine' is probably the biggest quality-of-life upgrade in years. I think this is where they truly listened to users.
I'm glad they were smart enough to realise that

Homeboiy:
From the importers and the sellers down to the repairers

Like I charged someone 150k for 13pm screen
But another repairer charged him 180k for same exact screen

I bought mine from china for 50k
He bought his own 130k here in Nigeria from sellers

I made 100k
He made 50k and the owners were thinking that his own is too cost
so everybody just wants their share of the profit like this, wahala for who em phone spoil o
PhonesRe: Is It Just Me Or Are Phone Brands Doing Better These Days?! by onlyedwin: 11:25pm On Sep 25, 2025
You didn't even talk about fast charging, less than an hour you've already gotten your phone up to full percentage before we were talking 2hrs+. I love the overall improvement they made o even though it might be just hype or whatnot

From what I've read now I can see that this phone is basic and not basic at the same time, which tells a lot about the brand. I look forward to trying it out sha
I've been following this brand for a while and they really outdid themselves with this one especially with that battery capacity so to me it's no longer just basic

All brands are doing well in the market and their sales depends on personal preferences. But this new wave of durability and water resistance is something to note as everybody is trying to outdo themselves with this new feature
Nor be small competition o, immediately it came out most phone brands jumped on the trend which is actually really good for buyers and phone users as they'll be getting better and improved features not easily seen on budget phones previously

Exactly o, I tell people to buy phones they can afford money to change the screen. If not, the phone will just be useless when the screen breaks
guyyy very important o, thats why I'm staying away from Samsung tho I like their phones😂
PhonesRe: Why Are Phone Repairs In Nigeria Almost More Expensive Than Buying New? by onlyedwin: 9:49pm On Sep 21, 2025
Thomasdike:
I feel like manufacturers are part of the problem. Phones today are glued shut and require proprietary tools, making it impossible for the average person to do a simple fix. This is a deliberate strategy to force us to buy new phones. They talk about sustainability, but they are the biggest culprits of electronic waste. In a country like Nigeria where affordability is a huge factor, this practice is particularly cruel. I'd love to see a "right to repair" law implemented here.
very true o, you start hearing the phone repairer saying the cost of repairs will be high because it's difficult to open the phone

Fast charging came out and most phone brands hopped on it which is a nice improvement for phone users
yeah no one wants to wait for over 2 hours or more to charge to a decent amount especially when you're in a hurry
