A final year student of Department of Religion and Culture, University of Nigeria Nsukka (UNN), Samuel Elias, 25, has allegedly committed suicide by drinking Sniper.

The mother of the deceased, Kate Elias, a staff of the university, told the News agency of Nigeria (NAN) that the unfortunate incident happened on Monday June 17, around 5.30pm in her house at Justina Eze Street, Nsukka.

Mrs Elias said she came back from work on that fateful day and discovered that the mood of her first child was bad and he was staggering when he came to collect a bottle of coke from the fridge.

“I followed him immediately to his room and started talking to him but he could not respond and when I looked closely, I discovered that his teeth had tightened up,” she said.

“As I looked around, I saw an empty sniper bottle; at this point I raised alarm and my other children rushed to the room and we tried to give him red oil but his tightened teeth did not allow the oil to enter his mouth.

“We immediately rushed him to Faith Foundation Hospital, Nsukka and were later referred to Bishop Shanahan Hospital, Nsukka, where he eventually died.”

The mother of seven said her son could have died of depression, noting that he had been lamenting of his inability to graduate from UNN because of his final year project which had been holding him.

She said also the son had not been happy how his late father’s family had abandoned them since their father died.

“I know two things he usually complained, his inability to graduate from UNN since 2016 because of the project that he has not finished as his classmates have all gone for their National Youth Service Corps (NYSC).

“Also, how his father’s family in Ihechiowa in Arochukwu Local Government of Abia State abandoned them and their mother since their father died.

“Whenever he complained of these things, I usually advised him to trust God who is capable of solving every problem.

“I do not know why he will go to this extent of committing suicide, I have seven children and he was my first child.

The Vice Chancellor of the University of Nigeria, Professor Benjamin Chukwuma Ozumba, as part of his continued effort to renovate the School hostels, flagged-off the construction of a new Ultra-Modern hostel complex on a Build, Operate and Transfer (BOT) Model few days to exit office. The hostel complex which will replace the old dilapidated Ziks Flat, promises to be a new model of hostel accommodation in the country.

From former Governor of Anambra state and the PDP Vice Presidential candidate in the 2019 General elections, His Excellency Peter Obi, came a warning to new Imo state Governor, His Excellency Emeka Ihedioha.

Speaking at a very high profile lecture on May 28 to mark the inauguration of Ihedioha as the governor, Obi, who was the Guest of Honour warned Ihedioha off three things.

The first thing, Obi told Ihedioha, is not to imbibe the habit of flying in chartered jets. 99 per cent of Nigerian Governors feel it is beneath them to fly on commercial planes.
This costs them millions of Naira. The governors blame it on exigencies of duties. But Obi told Ihedioha to perish the thought, and get on a commercial flight to save money with which to work for Imo people.

Obi: “Don’t waste money. Ignore chartered jets. Why pay millions on Naira when you can pay only N40,000 and get to the same destination?”

The second is the office of the First Lady. It costs money to maintain that office. You cannot afford it. Imo is in a mess. Your wife is your first lady.

The first lady of your house and heart. Let her continue with her career. And show face only when it is necessary. She does not need that office”
The third Obi said is not to turn government house into a big party. “Those who want to drink should go to the bar. Those who want to laugh should go and meet Okey Bakassi to laugh. Face your job”

There was a burglar incident in chemist shop in Aji Enugu Ezike of which a suspect was arrested.
