Ibezim Calls For Grassroots Mobilisation As NDC Prepares For 2027 Elections In Anambra

Anambra State coordinator urges party members and community leaders to rally support for Peter Obi and other NDC candidates.

Hon. Ifeanyichukwu Ibezim, the Anambra State Coordinator of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) Presidential Campaign Council, has called for a statewide mobilisation effort to build support for Peter Obi and the party’s candidates ahead of the 2027 general elections.

In a statement dated 27 October 2026, Ibezim described his appointment as a call to service, saying the campaign would require effective organisation, sustained engagement with voters and a collective commitment to achieving the party’s objectives.

He said Anambra had a special responsibility in the contest as the home state of the NDC’s presidential candidate, adding that the state must deliver a strong mandate for Obi while working to secure victory for other party candidates.

“Our responsibility goes beyond securing victory; we must work to ensure that Anambra delivers a resounding mandate, reflected in the strength and number of valid votes cast for Mr Peter Obi,” he said.

Building Support Through Community Engagement
Ibezim stressed that success would depend on the ability of party members and supporters to reach people in their communities rather than rely on political declarations alone.

He urged stakeholders, community leaders, women and young people to join the effort, with particular attention to voters who remain undecided or have lost confidence in the electoral process.

The coordinator said listening to their concerns and rebuilding trust in democratic participation would be essential to encouraging more people to vote.

“We must listen to them, earn their confidence, and remind them that the future of our country is too important to be surrendered to apathy,” he said.

Campaign to Reach All 21 Local Government Areas
Ibezim said the mobilisation drive would cover Anambra’s 21 local government areas, 326 wards and 5,720 polling units, extending to markets, churches and households across the state.

He said the aim was to bring the campaign directly to residents, encourage voter participation and convert support for the party into valid votes on election day.

He also emphasised the importance of protecting the electoral process, insisting that every valid vote must count and that the final result should reflect the people’s choice.

NDC Seeks Wider Electoral Gains in Anambra
Beyond the presidential race, Ibezim said the NDC would work towards winning other elective positions in Anambra, making coordinated efforts across the state important to the party’s wider electoral prospects.

He invited Ndi Anambra and other Nigerians seeking a new direction for the country to join the campaign, acknowledging that the task ahead would demand unity, commitment and hard work.

“Anambra must rise to the occasion, Peter Obi must receive a resounding mandate, and together, we must work for a new Nigeria that delivers for its people,” he said.

Ibezim ended his statement with a call for party members and supporters to begin the work of mobilisation.

“The call to duty is clear. Let us get to work,” he said.

The Nigerian Medical Association (NMA), Awka Zone, brought its 2026 Physicians’ Week celebrations to a climax on Saturday, 24 October, with a luncheon and awards ceremony honouring outstanding service to the medical profession, alongside renewed calls for improved doctors’ welfare and stronger healthcare delivery in Nigeria.

The event, held at Hilton Leisure Hotel, Awka, brought together medical practitioners, government officials, professional colleagues and invited guests to celebrate achievements, discuss challenges facing the healthcare sector and recognise individuals whose contributions have strengthened the association over the years.

With the theme, “Securing the Future of Medicine in Nigeria and Sub-Saharan Africa,” this year's celebration focused on the welfare of medical professionals, the growing pressure on healthcare services and the need for greater cooperation between government, doctors and the communities they serve.

The programme, which began on Sunday, 18 October, also demonstrated the association's commitment to public service through free medical treatment, community outreach, professional development and activities designed to strengthen relationships among medical practitioners.

Free Surgeries and Community Outreach Highlight Physicians’ Week
One of the major highlights was the provision of free medical services to residents, including prostate-specific antigen (PSA) testing, urinalysis and fasting blood glucose screening.

The association also provided free surgical treatment for selected patients with hernias, prostate-related conditions and uterine fibroids, including operations that would ordinarily cost between ₦1 million and ₦3 million.

Beyond the medical interventions, the week featured visits to vulnerable members of society, scientific discussions on current health challenges and a novelty football match with officers of the Nigeria Immigration Service.

The activities reflected the association's efforts to make healthcare more accessible while giving doctors opportunities to share knowledge, strengthen professional relationships and contribute to the well-being of their communities.

Speaking at the luncheon, Chairman of NMA Awka Zone, Professor Timothy Uzoma Mbaeri, said Physicians’ Week was an opportunity for doctors to demonstrate their commitment to society while drawing attention to issues affecting medical practice.

He explained that the association's responsibilities extended beyond protecting the interests of its members to ensuring that patients received quality healthcare, particularly those who could not afford expensive medical treatment.

Mbaeri thanked members, sponsors, donors and partners whose contributions made the free medical services and other activities possible, describing their support as an important demonstration of professional unity and compassion.

NMA Seeks Relief from Multiple Taxes on Healthcare Facilities
Turning to the challenges facing medical practitioners, Mbaeri appealed to the Anambra State Government to review and harmonise taxes and levies imposed on private healthcare facilities, warning that excessive charges could make treatment more expensive for patients.

He argued that healthcare should not be treated purely as a commercial enterprise, explaining that medical services carried a social responsibility that required government understanding and support.

According to him, many private practitioners were struggling with multiple payments and regulatory demands, making it increasingly difficult to operate their facilities without passing additional costs to patients.
He called for a consolidated payment system that would enable healthcare providers to meet their obligations without facing repeated demands from different authorities.

Mbaeri also raised concerns about harassment of practitioners by individuals claiming to enforce regulatory payments, urging the government to provide a more orderly and supportive operating environment.

He maintained that reducing unnecessary financial pressure on healthcare providers would benefit patients, encourage private investment in medical services and strengthen healthcare delivery across the state.

Anambra Government Moves Against Medical Quackery
Responding to concerns about healthcare regulation, Anambra State Commissioner for Health, Dr Afam Obidike, assured medical practitioners that the government was working to address complaints about multiple payments affecting healthcare facilities.

He disclosed that discussions were ongoing towards harmonising regulatory demands and creating a more coordinated system for healthcare providers.

Obidike also identified medical quackery as a serious threat to public health, calling for closer collaboration between the Ministry of Health and the Nigerian Medical Association to identify unqualified individuals operating hospitals and other medical facilities.

He expressed concern that some people without the required medical qualifications were establishing healthcare centres and treating unsuspecting patients, thereby exposing them to potentially dangerous practices.

The commissioner said the government intended to strengthen monitoring of healthcare facilities, particularly those operating in the private sector, and shut down establishments found to be operating illegally.

He urged doctors to assist the ministry by reporting suspected illegal medical practices within their communities, noting that qualified practitioners were better positioned to identify facilities operating outside approved professional standards.

Obidike explained that hospital registration followed established requirements, including appropriate building designs, qualified medical supervision and compliance with standards set by the Ministry of Health.

He stressed that the requirements applied to everyone seeking to establish a healthcare facility, adding that the Directorate of Medical Services provided the necessary registration checklist.

The commissioner also acknowledged the heavy workload facing medical professionals and said the government was making efforts to recruit additional healthcare workers, particularly for public health facilities.

He reaffirmed the ministry's willingness to work with the NMA in addressing concerns affecting doctors while protecting residents from unsafe medical practices.

Doctors Seek Better Welfare, Action Against Brain Drain
The need to improve working conditions and retain medical professionals was also emphasised by the Vice Chairman of NMA Awka Zone and Chairman of the Physicians’ Week Local Organising Committee, Dr Chinasa Okafor.

Okafor expressed concern over the continued departure of Nigerian doctors in search of better opportunities abroad, warning that the trend was increasing the workload of those remaining in the country.

She explained that medical practice demanded considerable personal sacrifice, with doctors often working beyond normal hours to meet patients' needs.

According to her, the shortage of medical personnel meant that available doctors were increasingly required to attend to more patients than would ordinarily be expected.

She urged the government to increase budgetary allocations to healthcare, improve remuneration and create working conditions that would encourage doctors to remain in Nigeria.

Okafor maintained that medical professionals would deliver better services when adequately motivated and supported, rather than being overwhelmed by financial pressures and difficult working environments.

Reflecting on the significance of Physicians’ Week, she described the celebration as a welcome opportunity for doctors to relax, reconnect with colleagues and attend to their personal well-being after months of demanding responsibilities.

She also appealed to members of the public to appreciate the contributions of medical professionals and discourage violence against healthcare workers.
Okafor encouraged Nigerians to take their health seriously, stressing that regular medical attention and personal responsibility for healthy living remained important to preventing avoidable illnesses.

Physicians Urged to Prioritise Personal Health
Chairman of the occasion, Dr Udoka Imagie, also drew attention to the importance of doctors looking after themselves while caring for others.

He observed that medical professionals frequently devoted considerable time and energy to their patients, sometimes neglecting their own health in the process.

Imagie welcomed the inclusion of personal health and well-being in the Physicians’ Pledge, describing it as an important recognition that doctors must also protect their physical and emotional welfare.

He noted that medical practitioners needed adequate rest, recreation and a healthy balance between professional duties and personal life to sustain their ability to care for patients.

The chairman encouraged doctors to make their health a priority rather than concentrating entirely on professional responsibilities and financial success.
He also congratulated the award recipients, describing recognition by professional colleagues as particularly meaningful because it acknowledged years of dedication, service and contributions that might otherwise go unnoticed.

Imagie commended the association's leadership for recognising individuals who had supported its growth, including those outside the medical profession whose professional services had benefited members over the years.

Scientific Conference Strengthens Professional Knowledge
Explaining the broader purpose of the celebration, Secretary of NMA Awka Zone, Dr Chiedu Morah, said Physicians’ Week provided an opportunity for medical practitioners to strengthen relationships while improving their knowledge and service to society.

He explained that the annual event, traditionally held in October, allowed doctors to step away from their demanding schedules and participate in activities that promoted professional unity, learning and recreation.

Morah said the scientific conference organised during the week enabled participants to examine current health challenges, exchange experiences and discuss developments relevant to medical practice.

He noted that knowledge gained from such engagements could be applied directly to patient management, making continuous professional education an important part of the celebration.

According to him, the association also used the occasion to reach vulnerable members of society through charitable visits and community service.

He identified visits to orphanages and leprosy settlements among the activities associated with Physicians’ Week, explaining that such engagements reflected the medical profession's responsibility towards disadvantaged people.

Morah said the novelty football match with the Nigeria Immigration Service further strengthened relationships between doctors and other professional groups.

He described the luncheon and awards ceremony as another important part of the celebration, providing an opportunity to recognise members whose dedication had contributed to the association's development.

Among the recipients was Barrister Amaka Ezeno, who received the association's 2026 Meritorious Service Award in recognition of more than two decades of legal support to NMA Awka Zone.

Other honourees included Dr Ifeoma Njelita, recognised for her contributions to the association, and Dr Emmanuel Ogochukwu Umenweke, alongside former executives and other deserving members.

Speaking after receiving her award, Ezeno, a member of the Body of Benchers and a Notary Public, expressed appreciation to the association for recognising her longstanding service as its legal adviser.

She described the honour as especially meaningful because it acknowledged the professional guidance and assistance she had provided over the years.
Ezeno said the recognition had renewed her determination to continue supporting the association and delivering quality legal services whenever required.

She encouraged lawyers, doctors and other professionals to remain committed to excellence, stressing that genuine dedication could inspire others even when the individuals involved were unaware that their efforts were being noticed.

The legal practitioner urged people to approach their responsibilities with integrity and consistency, rather than allowing the expectation of immediate recognition or reward to determine their commitment.

She also called on public officeholders to honour their campaign promises, emphasising the importance of accountability and maintaining public confidence in leadership.

Earlier, Imagie had commended Ezeno for voluntarily providing legal guidance to the association over the years, describing her contributions as an example of professional generosity deserving recognition.

The 2026 Physicians’ Week is scheduled to officially conclude on Sunday, 25 October, with a thanksgiving and rededication service at St Andrew's Anglican Church, Nkwelle Ezunaka.

The service will provide an opportunity for members to give thanks, reflect on the week's activities and renew their commitment to professional integrity, compassionate healthcare and service to humanity.

The Nigerian Content Development and Monitoring Board (NCDMB) has held its first Nigerian Content Media Stakeholders Workshop in the South-East, urging journalists to help more residents and businesses benefit from opportunities in Nigeria’s oil and gas industry.

Dr Obinna Ezeobi, the Board’s General Manager of Corporate Communications, gave the charge on Thursday, 15 October 2026, during the one-day capacity-building workshop at Golden Tulip Hotel, Awka, Anambra State.

He said journalists must go beyond reporting industry activities to explain how the local content policy works, identify opportunities for Nigerians and hold oil and gas operators accountable for meeting their legal obligations.

Why Anambra matters
Ezeobi described the workshop as part of the Board’s annual media engagement, which began in Port Harcourt, Rivers State, in 2019. He said the Awka edition was the first held in the South-East.

He explained that the engagement was designed to improve journalists’ understanding of the NCDMB’s mandate, programmes and opportunities while strengthening public awareness of the Nigerian Oil and Gas Industry Content Development (NOGICD) Act.

Anambra was selected because of its oil-producing status and potential contribution to the industry. According to Ezeobi, the state ranks second among oil-producing states in the South-East, with estimated production capacity of about 3,000 barrels per day.

He also highlighted the contributions of prominent indigenous industry figures, including Engineer Emeka Okwuosa of OilServ and Dr Ernest Nnaemeka Azudialu-Obiejesi, founder of the Nestoil Group, alongside other Nigerian oil services companies.

Ezeobi said the development of local content depended on cooperation among industry operators, government institutions, businesses, host communities, professionals, universities and the media. The Board has pursued this approach since its establishment in 2010.

Journalists urged to deepen coverage
The corporate communications chief said the NOGICD Act empowered the Board to use media, communication and stakeholder engagement to promote Nigerian content, citing Sections 67 and 70(n) of the legislation.
He added that the Board’s 2017 Nigerian Content 10-year strategic roadmap identified collaboration and stakeholder engagement as key enablers of implementation, placing communication at the centre of efforts to expand local participation.

According to Ezeobi, journalists have helped make local content a national issue over the past 16 years, with Nigeria’s experience also influencing the adoption of similar policies in several African countries.

He said effective media engagement had contributed to the Board’s public profile, including its recognition as the best federal agency for four consecutive years in rankings by the Presidential Enabling Business Environment Council.

However, he stressed that the media’s responsibility extended beyond promoting the Board’s achievements. Journalists, he said, should explain the policy’s practical benefits, investigate implementation challenges and report cases requiring regulatory intervention.

Ezeobi urged participants to produce more informed, engaging and professionally sound reports, particularly on technical subjects such as oil and gas operations, local content compliance and opportunities for indigenous businesses.

He also encouraged journalists to develop award-winning stories and pursue purposeful careers, arguing that a stronger understanding of industry laws and programmes would help them serve their audiences more effectively.

The Board expects improved reporting to help Anambra residents identify training, employment and business opportunities, while enabling journalists to question operators and track compliance with Nigerian content requirements.

Board outlines its responsibilities
In a presentation on the Board’s mandate, Director of Planning, Research and Statistics Silas Omomehin Ajimijaye said the NCDMB was established to develop Nigerian capacity while maintaining industry standards and monitoring compliance with the NOGICD Act.

Ajimijaye challenged the perception that local content was intended mainly for the Niger Delta, explaining that its benefits were meant for Nigerians across the country, including businesses and professionals in Anambra.

He said oil and gas projects were expected to have Nigerian content plans and commitments, which the Board monitors and enforces. He encouraged journalists to report suspected violations so the agency could investigate and take appropriate action.

The director also highlighted the Board’s work with researchers to develop locally produced solutions and its training programmes aimed at equipping Nigerians with the technical skills needed to deploy them.

He urged young people in Anambra to follow the Board’s official portal for information about available programmes and submit project proposals where appropriate, stressing that awareness was essential to participation.

Anambra seeks greater benefits
Anambra State Commissioner for Information and Value Reformation, Dr Law Mefor, welcomed the workshop but expressed concern that the state had yet to benefit sufficiently from its oil-producing status.

Mefor said the state possessed substantial natural gas resources but had not enjoyed the expected benefits of the Nigeria Gas Master Plan. He argued that better access to these resources could support industrial growth.

He identified electricity generation and distribution as important to Governor Chukwuma Charles Soludo’s ambition to develop Anambra into a major destination and megacity, adding that gas could help power industries and create jobs.

The commissioner said the state had established a legal and governance framework for electricity generation and distribution. Access to gas and other essential infrastructure, he argued, could enable Anambra to generate power for local use and potentially supply neighbouring states.

Mefor also called for changes to Nigeria’s education system, advocating greater emphasis on practical skills, innovation and entrepreneurship to prepare graduates to create businesses and jobs rather than depend solely on existing employment.

He urged the NCDMB to help address the perceived imbalance in access to local content opportunities, ensuring that Anambra residents and businesses could participate more fully in programmes intended to expand Nigerian capacity.
The commissioner pledged the state government’s willingness to work with the Board and said he would convey the workshop’s message to the governor.

Media stakeholders welcome training
Journalists David Eleke of ThisDay, Kenechukwu Ofomah of The News Chronicle and Emma Elekwa of The Nation welcomed the training, saying it had broadened their understanding of opportunities in the local content and oil and gas sectors.

They called for more regular engagements to keep journalists informed about changes in relevant policies, laws and programmes, enabling them to explain developments accurately and help residents make informed decisions.
The workshop featured presentations, panel discussions and sessions on Nigerian content development, community development, professional journalism and the media’s contribution to the oil and gas industry.

More than 60 media stakeholders and government appointees participated in the event, which also drew NCDMB officials and representatives of the Anambra State Government.

The gathering reinforced the Board’s expectation that better-informed journalists would help connect citizens to industry opportunities while strengthening public scrutiny of local content implementation.

Former Kaduna State Governor Nasir El-Rufai is facing consequences for actions taken against others while he was in power, according to Nigeria Democratic Congress chieftain Buba Galadima.

Galadima made the assessment while discussing El-Rufai’s detention on Symfoni TV, but rejected the suggestion that the case should automatically be viewed as politically motivated because of the former governor’s political status.

“El-Rufai himself is paying for what he has done to other people, I believe so,” Galadima said, before questioning why authorities had arrested El-Rufai if the case was being described as political.

His comments add another perspective to the debate surrounding the former governor’s detention, separating the question of possible consequences for his past conduct from claims that political interests may be behind the case.

Galadima also turned his criticism towards the ruling All Progressives Congress, APC, accusing the party of being desperate to retain power and warning that it could “do anything under the sun” to achieve that goal.

“The desperation with which the APC is going, they can do anything under the sun to come back to power,” Galadima said, arguing that party members understand what they could face if they lose power.

He added that the APC’s concern was linked to its record in government, saying its members knew that “what they have done to people will visit them” if political power eventually changes hands.

Nollywood actress Damilola Adegbite says she has noticed a shift in Nigeria’s dating culture, with younger men increasingly showing open interest in women who are older than them.

Adegbite, 41, made the observation during a recent episode of her podcast, published on her YouTube channel, where she reflected on changing attitudes towards women and age.

She said women were once made to feel that reaching a certain age meant they should quietly leave the dating scene, while younger women were expected to receive most of the attention.

According to the actress, that attitude appears to be changing, with women in their late thirties and early forties increasingly attracting younger men who are willing to express their interest without hesitation.

Adegbite illustrated the change through the biblical image of a rejected stone becoming the cornerstone, suggesting that women once overlooked because of their age could now be seen as highly desirable.

“Maybe we should just say the older woman who was once overlooked has become the premium package,” she said, using the phrase to describe what she sees as a reversal in dating preferences.

She said the change had become particularly noticeable when younger men approached women aged 38, 40 or 42 and made their intentions clear, rather than treating their age as a reason to keep their distance.

Adegbite said such confidence could itself be attractive, particularly when a younger man openly tells an older woman that he likes her, leaving her surprised by the directness of his approach.

“A younger man will see a woman who is 38, 40 or 42 and say boldly, ‘I like you.’ And you are sitting there thinking, ‘Sorry, wait, are we doing this?’” she said.

She added that the younger man might simply look directly at the woman and respond, “Yes, we are,” a confidence she believes can make the attention even more appealing.

Her comments reflect a wider conversation around changing expectations in relationships, particularly the assumptions that women become less desirable as they grow older while younger women automatically dominate romantic attention.

Adegbite’s remarks were presented as her personal observation of the dating scene, rather than as evidence of a measured nationwide trend among Nigerian men and women.

With mounting confusion in the political space, the need for reappraisal of candidates aspiring to elective positions in Nigeria has become absolutely necessary. Every election season produces aspirants of all political hues- those who have an idea what the office they seek demands, and are willing to give it their best shot, and others who do not, but feel entitled to be voted for. But the beauty of participatory democracy is that the power to choose resides not with the candidates in contest, but with the people whose mandate makes the difference.

Fortunately, the people of Anambra Central Senatorial Zone who, like other Nigerians, will go to the polls January 2027, are politically sophisticated and do not yield easily to political manipulations of demagogues whose interest in representation is not more than personal aggrandizement. They are aware that a good number of those seeking their votes do not possess the skills required of the high office they seek and may be ignorant of the responsibilities thereof.

Perhaps it is this lack of competence on legislative matters that encourages some of them, when elected, to put up cameo appearances, and sometimes outright disappearance from plenary when issues of national importance are debated. It can be safely speculated that these categories of lawmakers are exiguous in sponsoring bills and motions, but prodigal in sleeping during debates at the floor of the National Assembly. They are almost always eager to pollute themselves with every lawful and lawless indulgence without so much as mustering enough courage to call attention of the state to the problems plaguing their respective zones.

Because they don't reckon with the people whose mandate they hold in trust; they are quick to sacrifice their interests once it ties with the president's and return another election season with a promise of a tax cut to win more votes.

In spite of all these, the future of the zone is not completely bleak with the coming into the race of a candidate whose aspiration commends itself to the cause of the people with as with much compassion as with commitment. The aspiration of Princess Helen Ifeoma Mbakwe may be fresh in relation to others, but it is certainly not inferior to any by whatever standard. In fact, it is superior in compassion and commitment. It bears the love of a mother, the discipline of a lawyer, and the sophistication of a cosmopolitan woman whose exposure speaks not just to the deprivation suffered by the people, but to the awaited promise.

Her experience as a lawyer, and a widely traveled business woman, exposes her to societies that work and the need to build strong institutions through laws. Though she recognizes law and order as the basis upon which an equitable society rests, she does not pretend it solves all problems. She feels the vicarious pains of her people of Anambra Central Senatorial Zone, evident in their loss of arable land through devastating erosion. She bemoans the lack of attention to this ugly development and the threat it poses to a state as small as Anambra. The fact that Anambra is the smallest state in Nigeria after Lagos compels the need for urgent attention otherwise with the speed of devastation it will not be long before the farmlands, economic trees, houses, public buildings, markets, and roads are completely lost. It is an unvarnished truth that the state government alone cannot deal with the problem and requires support from the central government to be able to make an impact.

Princess Mbakwe whose compassion for, and commitment to, the people of Anambra Central has a verifiable record in the number of philanthropic gestures she had done is ready to give this menace the national attention it deserves. And she is ready to double down on this, using the instrumentality of the state to extricate the endangered people of the Central Senatorial Zone and indeed Anambra State. She is well aware as an “abiding political amazon with an ease of building relationships and forming alliances across political divides” that good representation does not come by standing still. Because she has less of the arrogance of the everyday politician she appreciates when to play hardball and when to soften the path to achieve a consensus.

Few, if any, will deny that she has both the mental and spiritual capacity to deal with the dead hand of the state in order to achieve results. Born and educated in the North, works and lives in the West she has a fairly better understanding of the corporate Nigeria and how best to work and achieve what has long been denied her people.

From the beautiful span of contestants, it can be said with a measure of authority that no one can hold a candle to Mbakwe in all areas of assessment. She has a rare blend of comeliness, cognition, courage, commitment and communication to deal with the rigours of legislation for effective representation. If the Zone must not to be caught on the hop, a change in representation should happen. Electing Princess Mbakwe will bring a change that will strengthen the path and give
back to the people. She appreciates the enormity of the challenges and is ready to apply herself to the task.

ASTUC Youth Celebrates Community Shared Values In Onitsha South, Honours Role Models As Anambra Marks 35th Anniversary

As Anambra State marked 35 years since its creation, the Anambra State Town Unions Council Youth Wing, ASTUC Youth, turned the anniversary spotlight towards something beyond celebration; the values, people and young citizens shaping the future of the state.

The event, held on Thursday, August 27, 2026, at Exotic Suites & Hotel, GRA, Onitsha, brought together community and youth leaders as part of activities marking Anambra@35.

The programme, organised in collaboration with the Police Campaign Against Cultism, Violence and Other Vices (POCACOV), featured an award presentation, a recitation challenge on the 12 core values of One Anambra, the unveiling of a book titled We Believe in Anambra, and the launch of the We Believe in Anambra music album.

The event also featured the introduction of POCACOV as a platform for addressing cultism, drug abuse and other social vices among young people.

‘Tomorrow is now’
President-General of ASTUC Youth Wing, Comrade Ken Okoli, said the initiative was designed to remind young people that they were not merely leaders of tomorrow but active participants in shaping the society today.

He said the celebration was about recognising the shared values that have helped define Anambra while also celebrating individuals from Onitsha South who had made meaningful contributions to their communities.

Okoli said the message from the state leadership was increasingly moving from simply encouraging citizens to speak up when they noticed something wrong to urging them to take action.

He challenged young people to practise the values they preached, describing Anambra people as the “Light of the Nation” and saying the 12 core values of One Anambra remained important to sustaining that identity.

According to him, ASTUC Youth had already visited eight local government areas and was taking the campaign across all 21 local government areas of the state.

He said the youth wing was particularly interested in strengthening the governance and value-system pillar by working more closely with local governments.

Okoli argued that local government remained a critical part of everyday life because it deals directly with issues such as the registration of births, deaths and marriages.

He said ASTUC Youth would therefore work with the third tier of government to encourage policies and programmes that would make these responsibilities more effective and deepen the culture of responsible citizenship at the grassroots.

Ezenkwu warns of consequences of moral decline
Chairman of the occasion, Chief Linus Ezenkwu, praised the developmental strides of Governor Chukwuma Charles Soludo but said economic and physical development must go hand in hand with strong moral values.

Ezenkwu warned that Nigeria could face serious problems by 2040 if the decline in moral standards among young people was not addressed.

He recalled a time when, in his view, young people showed greater respect for elders, stronger fear of God and a deeper sense of responsibility.

He urged ASTUC Youth to take its campaign beyond local government headquarters and into wards and communities, saying young people needed to understand the values that could help build a peaceful and prosperous society.

Ezenkwu also called on youths to reject criminal activities and develop a stronger sense of belonging. He urged them to support efforts aimed at developing Anambra and described the state as a place with enormous potential.

Ahead of the August 29 local government elections, he appealed to residents to come out and vote, while expressing his support for APGA candidates.

Muofunanya: Recognition brings greater responsibility
The incoming Mayor of Onitsha South LGA, Hon. Ikechukwu Muofunanya (Ezeoba), who received a Special Recognition Award, described ASTUC Youth's work as an important contribution to society.

Muofunanya commended the leadership for using recognition as a way of encouraging people who were making positive contributions to their communities.

He said the award was not simply an honour but also motivation to do more, promising greater commitment, productivity and service to the people.

He said initiatives that recognised community builders could encourage more people, particularly young citizens, to contribute positively to society.

Nwora urges youths to reject drugs
The Mayor of Onitsha North LGA and APGA candidate for the Onitsha North/South Federal Constituency in the 2027 general election, Hon. Anthony Nwora, used the occasion to warn young people about the dangers of illicit drugs. He thanked ASTUC leadership for finding him worthy for recognition said more work need to be done and it must be carried out for the good of Anambra State.

Nwora described drug abuse as one of the most pressing problems facing communities and called for stronger cooperation between government, parents, community leaders and young people to tackle it.

He encouraged youths to pursue skills and legitimate opportunities rather than chase quick money, which he said could not provide a lasting future.

Nwora also spoke about his ambition to represent Onitsha North and South in the House of Representatives, saying effective representation should start with listening to constituents.

He said town hall meetings and regular meetings with stakeholders would help him understand the needs of the people and turn those concerns into legislation if elected.

His experience as a mayor, he added, had given him a better understanding of grassroots challenges and the responsibility that comes with representing the people.

Akpudo honoured as Onitsha South role model
Among those recognised at the event was Hon. James Ibezim Ibezimako Akpudo, APGA candidate for the Anambra State House of Assembly, Onitsha South Constituency II, who received a Role Model Award.

Akpudo stated that the recognition came with responsibility and promised to live up to the expectations attached to the honour.

Akpudo encouraged young people to embrace values, recognise positive examples around them and take greater responsibility for the future of their communities.

Regarding Akpudo’s emergence, Okoli had earlier highlighted that the outstanding role model from Onitsha South would automatically become the local government’s Star Role Model for the 2026 Anambra State Role Models recognition, noting that this would also apply to Onitsha North and Nnewi North where only one candidate emerges from the local government.

Another political figure, Hon. Uzoma Innocent Eli, APGA candidate for Onitsha South Constituency I, received the Leadership and Community Service Award.

A role model as a mirror for the younger generation
Earlier, in his address, ASTUC Youth Mayor of Onitsha South, Hon. Comrade Chiadikobi Dunu, noted that the celebration was intended to honour individuals whose lives demonstrated excellence, integrity, selfless service and commitment to community development.

Dunu described a role model as a “mirror” through which young people could see the kind of future they wanted for themselves.

He said such recognition should not be seen merely as an award but as a call to greater responsibility, urging those honoured to continue inspiring the younger generation through hard work, discipline, humility and service.

For ASTUC Youth, the wider ambition is now to take that message beyond Onitsha South and into communities across Anambra; turning the state's 35th anniversary into an opportunity not only to celebrate its past, but to shape the values that will determine its future.

Hon. Ambassador Obinna Bartholomew Nwadiogbu, Anambra State Coordinator of the PBAT Door-to-Door Movement, has praised the successful South-East flag-off of the group’s nationwide mobilisation programme in Enugu, describing the event as a strong demonstration of grassroots organisation and political participation.

Nwadiogbu, who joined members of the Anambra team at the Enugu event, said the turnout showed that the movement was steadily building a structure capable of reaching communities across the South-East.

He particularly commended the National Coordinator, High Chief Dr Government Ekpemupolo, popularly known as Tompolo, for what he described as his commitment, energy and determination to coordinate the movement across the country.

According to Nwadiogbu, organising a nationwide grassroots movement of this scale requires patience, commitment and the ability to bring people together around a common political objective.

“I sincerely appreciate High Chief Dr Government Ekpemupolo, our National Coordinator, for his selfless service and the enormous effort he is putting into this movement,” Nwadiogbu said.

He also expressed appreciation to the various coordinators, stakeholders, members and supporters whose efforts contributed to the success of the Enugu gathering.

The Anambra coordinator said the participation of the state delegation was not simply about attending a political event but about demonstrating the importance of grassroots engagement.

He said the movement would continue to focus on reaching ordinary people in their communities and creating stronger links between political structures and voters.

Nwadiogbu described the Enugu flag-off as an important first step in the movement’s nationwide activities, saying the success of the programme had provided encouragement for members to work even harder in the months ahead.

He praised the South-East Coordinator for putting together what he described as a well-organised event and acknowledged the contribution of the Anambra team and other state coordinators.

“The turnout in Enugu was encouraging. It showed what can happen when people come together with a clear sense of purpose and proper organisation,” he said.

The event reportedly attracted more than 20,000 participants, creating a large gathering in the Enugu metropolis as supporters and members of the movement arrived from different parts of the South-East.

For Nwadiogbu, the size of the gathering was less important than the organisational lesson it offered.

He said the experience demonstrated that political mobilisation in the region could be strengthened through sustained grassroots engagement, teamwork and regular contact with communities.

The Anambra coordinator also thanked members who made sacrifices to attend the programme, saying their commitment remained central to the growth of the movement.

He extended particular appreciation to Hon. Obasi Alvin, identified as the Ebonyi State Coordinator, for his contribution and to other stakeholders involved in the mobilisation effort.
Nwadiogbu said the movement would build on the momentum generated by the Enugu programme as it expands its activities across communities.

He maintained that the South-East could develop a more coordinated grassroots political structure if its members worked together rather than operating in isolation.

“We are not here simply to attend meetings or appear at events. The real work is reaching people, listening to communities and building an organisation that can operate from one neighbourhood to another,” he said.

He also praised President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, saying the movement’s activities were aimed at taking the President’s Renewed Hope message directly to the grassroots ahead of the 2027 general elections.

Nwadiogbu described Tompolo’s role in coordinating the national movement as particularly important, saying his leadership had helped provide direction for members working across different parts of the country.

He urged members of the movement to remain committed to peaceful political participation and constructive engagement with voters and communities.
The Anambra coordinator said the Enugu gathering should therefore be seen not as the end of an exercise but as the beginning of a longer phase of grassroots organisation.

For the organisers and participants, the next challenge will be turning the enthusiasm witnessed in Enugu into sustained community-level engagement as the 2027 political season approaches.

The best of Anambra West took centre stage on Friday as the Anambra State Town Unions Council Youth Wing (ASTUC Youth) celebrated 10 outstanding community members whose lives, character and contributions continue to inspire others.

The colourful event, held at the Nzam Community Town Hall, brought together traditional and community leaders, youths, residents and other stakeholders for a celebration of good character, responsible citizenship and the importance of providing younger generations with worthy examples.

Tagged “Celebration of Our Community Shared Values and the Ten Community Role Models from Anambra West LGA,” the programme went beyond the presentation of awards. It provided a platform for the community to reflect on the values that define its people and the responsibility of individuals to pass those values on to the next generation.

The 10 honourees, representing the 10 communities in Anambra West Local Government Area, were recognised for their integrity, service and positive contributions to their communities.

The occasion also featured the launch of a Value Orientation Campaign, the 12 Core Values of Onye Anambra Recitation Challenge and the introduction of POCACOV, alongside the launch of the “We Believe in Anambra” music album.

With music, entertainment and refreshments adding colour to the gathering, the event combined celebration with a deeper message about youth development, community responsibility and the need to promote positive role models.

Okoli: Youths Have a Role in Building Anambra’s Value System
Speaking at the event, ASTUC Youth President-General, Comrade Ken Okoli, said young people must see themselves as active participants in shaping the future of Anambra State rather than simply waiting to inherit leadership.

He said the ASTUC Youth initiative was anchored on the fourth of the five pillars of the state government’s development agenda, governance and value system.

The other pillars, he said, are security, law and order; economic transformation; human capital development; and environment.

Okoli said ASTUC Youth was particularly interested in the governance and value-system pillar because good governance could not thrive without a people guided by sound values.

“You cannot govern a society properly without a value system,” he said, commending Governor Chukwuma Soludo for making governance and value system one of the five pillars of his administration.

He explained that, as citizens of Anambra State, youths had a responsibility to help define, promote and preserve the values expected of the people of the state, especially its identity as the Light of the Nation.

That thinking, he said, led to the development of the 12 Core Values of an Anambra Citizen, with the initiative drawing inspiration from the governor's governance and value-system agenda.

But Okoli stressed that identifying values was only the beginning.

From Values to People Young Anambra Can Emulate
He said ASTUC Youth recognised the need to put real faces and real stories behind the values by identifying individuals whose lives could serve as examples to younger people.

This, he said, was why the organisation began selecting community role models across Anambra State.
Okoli clarified that the honourees were not personally selected by ASTUC Youth leadership.

Rather, youth leaders in each community, working with their traditional rulers, were asked to identify people whose integrity, achievements and contributions made them worthy of recognition.

The initiative, he said, was also intended to complement the government's efforts to protect young people from harmful influences.

While government was using the law to confront activities capable of destroying the future of youths, ASTUC Youth, he said, was focusing on the other side of the equation, giving young people positive examples to follow.

He announced that 21 outstanding role models would eventually be selected from the local government areas across the state for a special end-of-year recognition in 2026, where Governor Soludo is expected to honour the best role models.

Okoli told the 10 Anambra West honourees that their recognition came with greater responsibility.
“As role models, you have a responsibility to make sure that our land is more developed than the way you met it,” he said.

He urged them to continue encouraging young people, sharing their experiences and demonstrating the values for which they had been recognised.

You Are the Light — Let It Shine
Okoli described the Anambra West programme as the seventh local government area reached by the initiative, saying ASTUC Youth was gradually building a statewide movement around shared values and responsible citizenship.

He said the broader objective was to make youths active partners in the state's development and governance process.
“We are speaking with one language of values, being the Light of the Nation,” he said.

He urged young people in Anambra West to avoid actions that could undermine their future and instead allow their character, work and achievements to speak for them.

“You are the Light of the Nation. Let this light shine,” he told the youths.
“Be the light. Today, not tomorrow. Look at those values we have shown you and be guided by those values.”

Obiorah Praises Initiative, Charges Honourees to Lead by Example
The Chairman of the occasion, High Chief Chukwudi Daniel Obiorah (Onwa N’Etiora Nnam), a Star Role Model of Anambra West 2025, represented by Engineer Okwudili Nwadiogbu, described the initiative as a timely platform for celebrating good character, community service and positive leadership.

He commended ASTUC Youth for recognising people making meaningful contributions to their communities and urged the honourees to remain worthy examples to younger generations.

Obiorah also encouraged Anambra West youths to embrace hard work, integrity, discipline and responsible living, while using their education, talents and energy to contribute to the development of their communities and the state.

Anekwe: Let Your Values Speak for You
One of the honourees, Engr. Sir Edwin Anekwe of Umueze Anam community, said role models were important because young people needed guidance and people whose lives they could study and emulate.

He encouraged youths to take their chosen pursuits seriously, constantly learn from those ahead of them and strive for excellence.

“Nothing beats a good value system. Whatever you are into, be good at it and let your values speak for you,” Anekwe said, reminding the youths that they represent the future of the state.

Okonkwo Thanks ASTUC Leadership
The host and ASTUC Youth Leader in Anambra West, Comrade Innocent Chukwudi Okonkwo, expressed appreciation to Comrade Ken Okoli-led ASTUC Youth for what he described as a transformation and renewed focus on leadership, values and youth development.

He said the recognition had provided an important platform for celebrating people whose contributions were making a difference in their communities.

Okonkwo urged the honourees to remain worthy examples, while encouraging youths in Anambra West to embrace discipline, integrity and hard work.

He also advised them to reject social vices, develop their talents and use their abilities to create opportunities and contribute positively to their communities.

The gathering ended on a hopeful note, with the message that building the Anambra of tomorrow would require more than government policies. It would also depend on citizens, particularly young people, who are willing to live by strong values and make their communities better than they found them.

Warns Against Multiple Social Club Memberships

The Executive Director of the Gender Empowerment and Rights Initiative Foundation (GERIF), Hon. Ify Obinabo, has called on women, particularly mothers, to uphold the virtues of sound parenting, responsible womanhood and strong family values as essential ingredients for building a morally upright society.

Playing a special guest role at the Awka Catholic Women Organization of the Catholic Diocese of Awka during their August meeting held at St. Patrick's Catholic Cathedral, Awka, Hon. Obinabo stressed that the family remains the foundation of society, noting that mothers occupy a strategic position in shaping the character, discipline and future of their children.

According to Obinabo, effective parenting goes beyond providing food, clothing and education, but also requires parents to provide moral guidance, emotional support, discipline and good examples for their children.

The GERIF Executive Director urged mothers to be deliberate in the way they raise their children, especially in an era where young people are increasingly exposed to influences from social media, peer groups and other external sources, emphasising the importance of mothers being available to listen to their children, understand their challenges and guide them through the different stages of life.

Obinabo also spoke extensively on the virtues of womanhood, urging Catholic women and women in general to remain role models in their homes, churches and communities. She described women as important pillars of family stability and called on them to cultivate virtues such as humility, integrity, compassion, wisdom, hard work and responsibility.

Obinabo, however, expressed concern over what she described as the growing tendency among some women, especially mothers, to belong to multiple social clubs and organisations.

According to her, while social organisations can provide opportunities for networking, mutual assistance and community development, excessive membership of multiple clubs could have negative consequences when it begins to take priority over family responsibilities.

Obinabo, who is the immediate past Commissioner for Women and Social Welfare in Governor Chukwuma Soludo's first tenure in Anambra State, warned that constant meetings, ceremonies, levies, financial obligations and other social engagements could place unnecessary pressure on women and reduce the quality time they spend with their husbands and children.

“Women should be careful not to allow social engagements to take the place of their primary responsibilities as mothers and wives,” she advised.

Obinabo encouraged women to be selective and purposeful about the organisations they join, urging them to consider the financial, emotional and time commitments involved before taking on additional memberships, noting that membership of such social groups is very demanding and therefore requires adequate preparation.

She also called for greater cooperation between husbands and wives in parenting, stressing that raising responsible children should be regarded as a shared responsibility.

The GERIF boss further urged members of the Awka Catholic Women Organization to use their various platforms to promote peace, unity, charity, education and the welfare of vulnerable members of society, with a firm promise that her organisation, GERIF, remains a platform they can explore for the cause of gender and vulnerable people.

She commended the Catholic women for their contributions to the Church and society, and urged them to continue to deploy their collective strength towards initiatives that improve the wellbeing of families and communities.

The August meeting provided an opportunity for members to reflect on the responsibilities of women in contemporary society, particularly the need to balance social activities with family obligations, faith and community service.

Hon. Obinabo concluded by urging the women to remember that their greatest legacy would not be the number of social clubs they belonged to, but the quality of lives they influenced, particularly the values and character they instilled in their children.

The Police Campaign Against Cultism and Other Vices (POCACOV) has stepped up its nationwide drive to prevent cultism, drug abuse and other social vices, with the Inspector-General of Police (IGP), Olatunji Disu, intensifying efforts to make preventive policing and community partnership central to Nigeria's security strategy.

The initiative received a major boost in Anambra State, where government officials, traditional rulers, youth leaders and senior police officers pledged stronger collaboration to tackle crime before it takes root.

The team led by its National Coordinator of POCACOV, SP Orvenonne Ikwen, Ph.D, who highlighted Anambra as the first stop in the South-East during the initiative's renewed nationwide sensitisation tour. She said the visit reflects the IGP's determination to strengthen grassroots engagement, build public trust and encourage communities to take ownership of crime prevention.

The delegation was first received at the Anambra State Police Command Headquarters on behalf of the Commissioner of Police, CP Ikioye Orutugu, recently promoted to Assistant Inspector-General of Police, by the command's spokesperson, SP Tochukwu Ikenga. Ikenga praised the Inspector-General for sustaining POCACOV, describing it as one of the Nigeria Police Force's most effective community policing initiatives.

According to him, the campaign demonstrates the police leadership's commitment to moving beyond traditional law enforcement by investing in prevention, public confidence and closer relationships with communities. He noted that lasting security depends not only on arrests but also on addressing the conditions that expose young people to crime.

Speaking during the engagement, SP Ikwen said the Inspector-General remains deeply committed to the success of POCACOV because he believes that security is a shared responsibility. She explained that the initiative promotes community partnership, trust-building and non-kinetic policing by working with citizens to prevent crime before it occurs.

"The Inspector-General is passionate about community partnership and building trust," she said. "That is why he continues to drive POCACOV across the country. The police cannot do it alone. Communities, parents, schools, religious organisations and other stakeholders all have important roles to play."

She explained that although POCACOV was established in August 2019, the current police leadership has strengthened the initiative by expanding its reach and making preventive policing one of its major priorities. Rather than waiting for crimes to happen, she said the campaign focuses on early intervention through advocacy, mentorship and continuous engagement with young people.

According to the National Coordinator, POCACOV now partners with schools, traditional institutions, faith-based organisations, government agencies, civil society groups and community leaders to educate young people about the dangers of cultism, drug abuse, cybercrime, bullying and other harmful activities while promoting positive values and responsible citizenship.

She highlighted the need for stronger family values and parental involvement, stressing that many social problems begin long before children become involved in criminal activities. According to her, crime prevention must therefore start at home and continue through schools and communities.

Building Safer Communities Through Prevention
The campaign's message received strong backing from the traditional institution. The traditional ruler of Ifitedunu, His Royal Majesty, Igwe Dr Chukwuemeka Ilouno (Eze Dunu), who at the briefing described POCACOV as a practical solution that tackles crime at its foundation rather than simply responding after offences have been committed.

The monarch warned that cultism and substance abuse are spreading among younger people, including pupils and secondary school students, largely because of broken homes, domestic violence and negative influences. He urged parents, schools, religious organisations, traditional rulers and the Nigeria Police Force to work together to reverse the trend before it worsens.

Igwe Ilouno also endorsed the establishment of POCACOV clubs in schools, saying they would help instil discipline, positive values and responsible behaviour from an early age. He expressed confidence that sustained awareness campaigns and early intervention would reduce social vices and lessen the burden on security agencies.

The campaign also attracted the support of youth organisations. The President-General of the youth wing of the Anambra State Town Unions Council (ASTUC Youth), Comrade Ken Okoli, said Anambra's well-organised community structure provides an ideal platform for taking POCACOV to every part of the state.

Okoli noted that the state's 179 communities already have active youth leadership structures capable of driving grassroots awareness and mobilising local participation. He pledged the full support of ASTUC Youth, expressing confidence that Anambra has the capacity to become a national model for community-based crime prevention through stronger partnerships between the police and the people.

Obosi's Community Model Offers Fresh Hope
The delegation later paid a courtesy call on His Royal Majesty, Igwe Chidubem Iweka III (Eze Iweka III), the traditional ruler of Obosi Kingdom and Chairman of the Anambra State Traditional Rulers Council at his palace, where the monarch shared Obosi's remarkable journey in confronting cultism through community action.

Igwe Iweka recalled that the campaign came at a painful cost, as some of those who first championed the fight against cult groups became targets of violent attacks and lost their lives. He said the situation forced the community to work closely with the police, the military and other security agencies to dismantle criminal networks and restore peace to the town.

Out of that experience, he explained, emerged the Movement Against Cultism in Obosi (MACO), a community-based initiative built on dialogue, awareness and reconciliation. One of its earliest programmes, organised at the Obosi Stadium, attracted more than 500 young people who publicly renounced cultism and pledged to embrace lawful and productive lives.

The traditional ruler described cultism as "a one-way street," warning young people that while joining may appear easy, escaping often comes with severe and sometimes deadly consequences. He disclosed that he has already presented a proposal to security authorities, urging them to adopt the Obosi model across Anambra and other states as a practical blueprint for tackling cultism through community participation.

Zone 13 Reinforces Preventive Policing
The campaign also took the delegation to the Zone 13 Police Headquarters in Ukpo, where the Assistant Inspector-General of Police in charge of the zone, AIG Miller Gayere Dantawaye, PSC, commended the Inspector-General for giving renewed strength to preventive policing through POCACOV.

Dantawaye described the initiative as one of the Nigeria Police Force's most effective non-kinetic strategies for reducing crime. He said meaningful engagement, mentorship and sustained public education often produce longer-lasting results than enforcement alone because they discourage criminal behaviour before it develops.

The AIG encouraged the POCACOV team to expand the campaign across other states under Zone 13, especially Enugu, while assuring the delegation of the zone's full support. He also advised organisers to carefully screen volunteers joining the movement to protect its credibility and prevent individuals with questionable backgrounds from taking advantage of the platform.

He further urged the team to deepen its activities in primary and secondary schools, stressing that children should be introduced to positive values early enough to reduce their chances of becoming involved in cultism, drug abuse and other criminal activities later in life.

Anambra Government Throws Its Weight Behind POCACOV
The campaign gathered further support when the POCACOV delegation visited the Anambra State Government at the Light House in Awka, where the Secretary to the State Government, Mrs Chiamaka Nnake, described the initiative as a perfect complement to Governor Chukwuma Soludo's vision of building a safer and more responsible society through value reformation.

Nnake explained that the Soludo administration's development agenda is anchored on key pillars, including security, law and order, governance and value reformation, adding that POCACOV naturally fits into the state's strategy of addressing the root causes of crime before they escalate. She said the initiative's emphasis on community engagement and behavioural change aligns with government's efforts to build what it calls the "New Anambra."

She praised the commitment shown by the police, traditional rulers, youth leaders and volunteers involved in the campaign, describing their efforts as a demonstration of genuine concern for the future of the state. According to her, the initiative reflects the same spirit behind the state's "Salute to the New Anambra" campaign, which encourages citizens to contribute their time, skills and ideas towards building a better society.

The SSG pledged to brief Governor Soludo on the campaign and explore ways of integrating POCACOV into the state's broader crime prevention and value reformation programmes. She also identified the forthcoming August women's meetings across the state as an important platform for taking the campaign directly to families and communities, while suggesting that respected adults and community leaders should join young people in championing the message against cultism and other social vices.

Communities Called to Keep the Momentum Alive
Speaking on the campaign's progress in the state, Anambra State POCACOV Coordinator, ASP Francesca Egbunike, said the initiative has continued to strengthen trust between the police and communities while creating opportunities for young people to choose productive and responsible lifestyles. She described POCACOV as a platform that encourages collaboration rather than confrontation and commended the Inspector-General for sustaining its expansion across the country.

Egbunike noted that the growing support from schools, traditional institutions, religious organisations, youth groups and community leaders demonstrates that Nigerians are increasingly embracing preventive policing as a shared responsibility. She expressed confidence that with continued public participation, the campaign would deliver lasting results in the fight against cultism and other social vices.

Urban civilisation is measured less by imposing buildings than by the quality of life a city sustains. Cities prosper when growth, technology and investment are balanced with sound planning, environmental responsibility and social inclusion. New Enugu Smart City therefore deserves national attention as an opportunity to establish a better model of urban development in Nigeria.


Over the past five decades, Nigeria has produced very few genuinely planned cities. Abuja remains the country's foremost example of a city conceived and built largely from the ground up, primarily to decongest Lagos and provide a purpose-built Federal Capital. Its original master plan was one of Africa's most ambitious urban planning exercises, carefully integrating residential, commercial, institutional and recreational districts with supporting infrastructure.


Abuja, however, also offers an important lesson. Repeated alterations to the master plan, inconsistent development control and an increasing number of planning exceptions have gradually weakened many of its founding principles. The result is mounting congestion, growing pressure on infrastructure and development patterns that increasingly resemble the urban problems the city was designed to avoid. The lesson is not that master plans fail, but that they cease to protect cities when cities cease to protect them.


Most generations inherit cities they did not build and leave behind cities they will never fully inhabit. Urban leadership is therefore judged not only by completed projects but also by the institutions, standards and public spaces preserved for those who follow. The true measure of development lies as much in what endures as in what is delivered.


That is why New Enugu Smart City should matter. It could offer an opportunity to demonstrate that disciplined planning can withstand political cycles and commercial pressures, that long-term vision need not yield to short-term convenience, and that institutional consistency can safeguard urban integrity. The initiative reflects the vision of Governor Peter Mbah and the practical leadership of Mrs Nkeiru Arum; the decisive test is faithful execution.


The greatest test, however, is not how projects begin but how they endure. Successful cities are built over decades, often outlasting the tenure of those who initiate them. New Enugu Smart City should therefore be safeguarded by institutions, professional standards and planning controls strong enough to outlast leadership changes.


A genuine smart city is defined not by the quantity of technology it deploys, but by the quality of life it delivers. Technology has value only when it improves how people live, work and move through safer communities, efficient services, sustainable infrastructure and responsive governance.


By enhancing liveability, wellbeing and economic productivity, these qualities also strengthen a city’s competitiveness. Efficient infrastructure, predictable regulation and reliable public services could therefore position New Enugu Smart City as a centre for investment, innovation, entrepreneurship and skilled talent.


The potential benefits are considerable. Intelligent transport reduces congestion and commuter stress; smart utilities improve the reliability of essential services; digital healthcare expands access to medical care; environmental monitoring improves air and water quality; and parks, pedestrian networks and integrated emergency systems promote healthier, safer communities. Together, these measures improve both urban efficiency and quality of life.


Yet every opportunity carries risk. Technologies that improve efficiency may compromise privacy, heighten cyber exposure, strain public finances, or exclude digitally disadvantaged citizens. Artificial intelligence can strengthen decision-making, but without oversight it may also reinforce bias. These risks call not for less ambition, but for stronger institutions. Like Icarus in Greek mythology, a city may be undone by ambition unrestrained by judgement; technology must therefore remain anchored in sound governance, discipline and accountability.


Equally important is the human dimension. No development, however technologically advanced, can command lasting confidence without transparent land administration, environmental stewardship, community engagement and institutional accountability. Investors need certainty, communities expect fairness, regulators require compliance, and residents deserve protection from future burdens. Sustainable cities are built not only with infrastructure and technology, but also with trust.


Experience worldwide demonstrates another enduring principle: cities flourish when development controls remain consistent and decline when exceptions become routine. Each departure from an approved framework may seem insignificant in isolation, but collectively they can alter traffic flows, overload infrastructure, weaken environmental performance and erode investor confidence. Protecting the master plan is therefore not administrative inflexibility; it is responsible stewardship.


New Enugu Smart City stands at a defining moment. It can become another ambitious project, gradually diluted by incremental departures from its original vision, or it can set a new benchmark for disciplined planning, institutional continuity and sustainable urban development. The difference will not be determined by architecture or technology alone, but by the consistency with which planning principles are upheld.


Nigeria needs more than new cities; it needs better cities, places where economic growth is matched by environmental responsibility, where technology serves people, and where governance remains disciplined. If New Enugu Smart City preserves its planning integrity, it will contribute more than modern infrastructure; it will demonstrate that Nigeria can build enduring urban institutions rather than repeat familiar mistakes.

The youth wing of the Anambra State Association of Town Unions Council (ASTUC) has honoured 11 outstanding community role models from Anambra East Local Government Area as part of a wider campaign to encourage young people to embrace integrity, discipline and responsible leadership. The event, held at the Anambra East Local Government Secretariat in Otuocha, also marked the local launch of the group's value orientation campaign aimed at promoting the 12 Core Values of Onye Anambra across communities and schools.

The ceremony brought together traditional ruler, political leaders, community representatives, youth organisations and residents from the 11 communities that make up Anambra East. Alongside the presentation of awards, the programme featured the recitation of the 12 Core Values of Onye Anambra, the official launch of the "We Believe in Anambra" music album, cultural entertainment and the symbolic flag-off of the value orientation campaign for the local government area.

Celebrating people whose lives reflect the values communities cherish
Addressing participants, ASTUC Youth President-General, Comrade Ken Okoli, said the initiative was designed to recognise individuals whose lifestyles, commitment to service and dedication to community development have made them examples for others to follow.

He said every successful society identifies the values it considers important, builds consensus around them and deliberately promotes them across generations. According to him, the awards were not simply about honouring successful people but celebrating those whose conduct reflects honesty, patriotism, discipline, justice, hard work and love for humanity.

Comrade Okoli said the programme was inspired by Governor Chukwuma Soludo's decision to integrate values into governance through his administration's development agenda. He described the approach as a significant shift that encouraged the youth organisation to identify shared values and celebrate individuals who demonstrate them in their everyday lives.

Rather than focusing on status or wealth, he said, the organisation deliberately selected role models whose contributions have positively influenced their communities, expressing hope that their stories would inspire many more young people to pursue meaningful lives built on character and service.

Campaign to take value orientation into schools and communities
Comrade Okoli explained that the recognition ceremony forms only one part of a broader campaign that will now move into schools across Anambra East. He said ASTUC Youth had already identified schools in the area's 11 communities where pupils and students would be taught the core values the organisation hopes will shape future generations.

Those values, he said, include being God-fearing, truthful, patriotic, self-reliant, disciplined, just, tolerant and respectful of all people regardless of tribe or religion. They also promote dignity of labour, community spirit, respect for human life and genuine love for others.

He said teaching those principles from childhood would help produce adults who naturally practise them throughout their lives. According to him, the campaign is intended to build stronger communities by encouraging positive attitudes rather than merely condemning social problems after they emerge.

Responding to suggestions that the initiative could be viewed as politically motivated, Comrade Okoli rejected the claim, insisting that the programme was driven solely by the desire to build a stronger value system capable of benefiting future generations across Anambra State.

Leaders urge young people to reject shortcuts and embrace honest success
The traditional ruler of Aguleri, His Royal Majesty Dr Michael Idigo, commended the ASTUC Youth leadership for initiating what he described as a commendable programme. He urged the organisers to sustain the initiative and encouraged the award recipients to continue living up to the expectations placed upon them as recognised community role models.

In his remarks, Chairman of Anambra East Local Government Area, Hon. Ifeanyichukwu Chinweze, appealed to youth leaders across the area's 11 communities to intensify efforts to reorient young people towards productive and lawful pursuits.

He expressed concern over the growing acceptance of internet fraud and other criminal activities among some youths, warning that such behaviour should never become part of the area's identity or cultural heritage.

Instead, Hon. Chinweze said communities should celebrate young people who succeed through education, farming, entrepreneurship, vocational skills and other legitimate means of earning a living. Recognising such individuals, he added, would encourage others to pursue honest success rather than quick wealth through illegal activities.

The council chairman also called on residents to support ongoing environmental sanitation efforts, stressing that maintaining a clean environment requires the participation of everyone. He said sanitation inspectors would continue encouraging cleaner neighbourhoods while promoting environmental responsibility as part of everyday life.

Recognition expected to inspire more young people to serve their communities
Member representing Anambra East Constituency in the Anambra State House of Assembly, Hon. Barr. Obi Nweke, who was honoured for his selflessness and contribution to his constituency described the event as a reflection of broader efforts to empower young people across the state.

He praised Governor Soludo for implementing youth-focused initiatives, including employment opportunities based on merit and the One Youth, Two Skills programme, which he said had equipped many young people with practical skills and economic opportunities.

Hon. Nweke said recognising community role models would inspire others to contribute positively to society. He encouraged the recipients to remain committed to serving their communities, noting that public recognition often motivates others to follow similar paths of integrity, leadership and selfless service.

Communities urged to invest in today's youth for a stronger tomorrow
Earlier in his welcome address, Chairman of the occasion and President-General of Aguleri Community, Hon. Chike Nwabia, described the investiture as an investment in the future of Anambra East rather than a routine award ceremony.

He said young people represent the present strength of every society and should be empowered to participate actively in governance, community development and nation-building. While acknowledging the challenges confronting many youths, including unemployment and social pressures, he said communities must continue creating opportunities that reward good character and responsible leadership.

Hon. Nwabia noted that the honoured role models came from different walks of life, including farming, business, education, skilled trades and volunteer service. He urged them to mentor younger people, speak against cultism, cybercrime and drug abuse, and work closely with government, traditional institutions and town unions to build peaceful and progressive communities.

As the ceremony concluded, ASTUC leadership reaffirmed its commitment to taking the value orientation campaign into schools and communities across Anambra East. The organisation said it hoped that celebrating integrity, service and hard work would help inspire a generation that measures success not only by personal achievement but also by the positive difference it makes to society.

Anambra Traditional Rulers Back Soludo's Reforms, Warn Against Illegal Royal Titles, Community Unrest

The Anambra State Traditional Rulers' Council (ASTRC) has warned people presenting themselves as traditional rulers without government recognition to stop immediately, saying offenders risk prosecution under the Anambra State Traditional Rulers' Law.

The warning came in a communiqué issued after the council's second quarterly meeting at the Government Light House in Awka on 26 June, where traditional rulers reviewed security, chieftaincy disputes, community development and the future of traditional institutions.

A major outcome of the meeting was the council's endorsement of the recent Supreme Court judgment which, according to the communiqué, dissolved autonomous communities in Anambra State. The traditional rulers congratulated Governor Chukwuma Soludo on what they described as a landmark legal victory, saying the ruling would promote peace, unity and development in affected communities.

The council warned that anyone continuing to parade themselves as an Igwe, Obi, Eze or any other traditional ruler in affected communities should desist or face sanctions under the Anambra State Traditional Rulers' Law 2007, as amended.


Warning over unauthorised coronations and 'Eze Ndigbo' title

The Monarchs also warned against churches, schools, associations and other organisations installing individuals as traditional rulers outside the legal process.

It said some recipients adopt titles such as His Royal Highness, Igwe, Obi and Eze, and even organise Ofala festivals reserved for government-recognised traditional rulers.

According to the communiqué, such practices breach the state's Traditional Rulers' Law, which prescribes a two-year prison sentence without the option of a fine. The council said it would enforce the law against offenders.

It also reaffirmed a directive of the South East Traditional Rulers' Council urging Igbo people living outside the South East and in the diaspora to stop using the title Eze Ndigbo and adopt Onye Ndu Ndigbo instead to distinguish community leaders from government-recognised traditional rulers and reduce tension in host communities.

Soludo praised for handling chieftaincy dispute and strengthening security

The traditional rulers commended Governor Soludo for resolving the Obiship dispute in Eze Uzu Awka Kingdom through a high-powered committee whose recommendations informed a government white paper. They urged him to adopt the same approach in resolving similar chieftaincy disputes across the state instead of prolonged court cases.

Members also praised the implementation of the Anambra Homeland Security Law, describing it as an important step in tackling crime. They welcomed action against suspected criminal native doctors, ritual practitioners, fake miracle pastors, drug dealers and drug abuse, urging the governor to sustain the crackdown "until sanity is restored to the system".

The council also condemned the recent attack on the Chief of Staff and members of his team along the Ndiukwuenu-Ufuma Road, where three people were killed. It expressed condolences to the state government, the Chief of Staff and the bereaved families, while urging security agencies to arrest and prosecute those responsible.

Conflict resolution and development plans

To address recurring disputes, the council said its newly inaugurated Conflict Resolution Committee, chaired by HRM Igwe C.N. Okpala and comprising traditional rulers and Presidents-General, had begun mediating intra- and inter-community conflicts. It encouraged affected communities to seek peaceful settlements through the committee.

The council also approved the design of a proposed Royal Village for traditional rulers and directed that detailed drawings and project costing should begin immediately. It asked its fundraising committee to accelerate plans to finance the project through a Public-Private Partnership pending government allocation of land.

Members also welcomed Governor Soludo's promise to provide a new secretariat at the Government Light House after the existing facility is redeveloped as part of the proposed Solution Silicon Valley Complex.

Training and partnership to strengthen traditional leadership

The communiqué also announced the governor's approval for annual retreats and seminars for Anambra traditional rulers from this year. The training will focus on conflict resolution, the council's code of conduct, rural justice administration, internal security collaboration and vigilante coordination to strengthen leadership at community level.

The council further commended Dominion City Church, led by Rev. Dr David Ogbueli, for organising and fully funding a one-day summit, The Impact of Christianity in Igbo Land. It described the event as the first of its kind, saying it promoted dialogue between Christian leaders and traditional rulers on faith, youth development and community building.

The traditional rulers urged other religious and non-religious organisations to adopt similar initiatives, saying stronger partnerships would promote peaceful coexistence, effective leadership and sustainable development across Anambra State.

A member of the Nigerian Chamber of Commerce, Industry and Agriculture, Sierra Leone, and Chief Executive Officer of Yennco World Trade Limited, Dr. Onyeka Nwafor, has paid a courtesy visit to the Vice President of the African Development Bank (AfDB), Dr. Abdul.B Kamara, ahead of the maiden edition of the Nigeria-Sierra Leone Trade Fair.

The visit took place last Friday at the African Development Bank Regional Office in Abuja, where Dr. Nwafor formally informed Dr. Abdul about the inaugural annual Nigeria-Sierra Leone Trade Fair scheduled to hold in Freetown, Sierra Leone.

Speaking during the meeting, Dr. Nwafor said the trade fair is aimed at strengthening economic and commercial ties between Nigeria and Sierra Leone. The event is slated to take place from July 27 to August 9, 2026, at the Miatta Conference Centre in Freetown.

According to him, the initiative is expected to boost bilateral trade relations, foster economic cooperation, and promote peace and unity among member states of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS).

Dr. Nwafor disclosed that the current annual trade volume between Nigeria and Sierra Leone stands at approximately $5 million, with Nigeria's exports accounting for about $2.96 million.

He described the figures as indicative of a modest but steadily growing bilateral economic relationship with significant potential for expansion.

In his response, Dr. Abdul commended the initiative, emphasizing that the African Development Bank remains at the forefront of promoting economic growth and development across the African continent.

He noted that the AfDB is currently financing the construction of the Abidjan-Lagos Corridor Highway, a major regional infrastructure project spanning five countries —Nigeria, Benin, Togo, Ghana, and Côte d'Ivoire.

The Spiritual Head of Soul Revival Outreach, Nnewi, Prophet Ikechukwu Uzukwu, on Sunday said that President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s attempt to stifle opposition political parties is an open invitation to revolution.

Prophet Uzukwu described the latest move to deregister the National Democratic Congress (NDC), a party duly recognised and registered by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), as an attempt to make President Tinubu the sole candidate in the 2027 presidential election.

The cleric noted that it is unfortunate that the incumbent president, who has always claimed to be fighting for democracy, has become anti-democratic.

“The move to deregister the NDC is a panic move. Tinubu knows that Nigerians will no longer tolerate electoral malpractices, and that is why he is trying to stifle the NDC so that Mr. Peter Obi will not be on the ballot,” he said.

“President Tinubu’s dream of becoming the sole presidential candidate in 2027 will soon become a nightmare for him. The President has his plans, the opposition parties have theirs, and the masses also have their own. Only time will reveal which plan will triumph.

“President Tinubu has failed woefully in all ramifications. Every aspect of governance has been bastardised under his watch. What he specialises in is borrowing to loot and looting to borrow. His plan to silence real progressives and clamp down on opposition parties is an open invitation to revolution.

“A revolution that will consume President Tinubu and his crowd of sycophants is coming. It is always easier to give water to a monkey with a golden cup, but the issue is who will retrieve the golden cup from the monkey. He lost the last presidential election in his own polling unit, ward, and local government area. That is a clear message from his own people to all Nigerians.

“If President Tinubu’s son or a relative of any member of his inner circle were kidnapped, their release would be secured within hours. Yet many Nigerians have lost countless family members to bandits and terrorists. Those who are lucky enough to be freed must have paid huge sums in ransom. Are we going to continue like this? The obvious answer is a capital No,” the Anambra prophet declared.

“It is now crystal clear that his own people who voted against him in Lagos State in 2023 were right after all. Nigerians desire free, fair, and credible elections in 2027 to remove BAT and his government, as well as the All Progressives Congress (APC),” he asserted.

Prophet Uzukwu appealed to Western countries, especially the President of the United States of America, to support Nigerians by ensuring credible presidential polls in 2027.

“There is unprecedented bloodshed in Nigeria under BAT, who has become a symbol of bad news to Nigerians. Just as the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) faded with former President Goodluck Jonathan, the APC will also die with the exit of the incumbent president.

“Mr. Peter Obi made several political mistakes in the past, but this is not about him now. It is time for citizens to rise in defence of the nation’s future. The fight is not just against BAT’s second-term bid but also to prevent a third-term agenda,” the prophet insisted.

He added that everything President Tinubu criticised his predecessors for has become part of his administration. “The situation calls for change, and change is coming.”

In a bid to promote character education of our pupils and students, Anambra State Town Unions Council, Youth Wing (ASTUC YOUTH) has resolved to take Value Orientation Campaign to Schools in Anambra Communities.

President General, His Youthfulness Comrade Ken Okoli, moved the motion and which was seconded by the Youth-Mayor of Idemili South, Comrade Ifeanyi Oriobu during the Council’s monthly general meeting held on the 27th June 2026 at the ASTUC Secretariat Hall Old Government House Awka.

According to Comr. Ken, "It is the belief of the leadership of ASTUC Youth that Character Education of the students is key to raising a transformed generation that will sustain the good works of the State Government under the leadership of Mr Governor, Prof. Chukwuma Charles Soludo CFR.

"It was resolved that on Wednesdays and Thursdays that the leadership of the Community Youths will pay a scheduled visit to the schools within the community to orientate the students on the 12 Anambra Community Shared Values that will raise a new generation of Ndi Anambra as the light of the nation, using the I BELIEVE IN ANAMBRA book as a guide. The book was distributed to members of the Council that were present at the meeting. The 12 Values are Fear of God, Patriotism, Self-reliance, Discipline, Life, Truth, Liberty, Justice, Community, Dignity of Labour, Religious & Ethnic Tolerance and Love."

"ASTUC Youth in 2023 published the book as a template for good governance, value system and value orientation in Anambra State. The Anambra State Traditional Rulers Council (ASTRC) and the Anambra State Town Unions Council (ASTUC) adopted the book for value orientation of our youths in the communities when the President General of ASTUC Youth presented the book to the ASTRC and ASTUC in one of their general meetings."

The ASTUC Youth Boss further disclosed that "the importance of character education of our young people in the schools cannot be over emphasized. Above that we must raise among the teachers those who will be Value Orientation Vanguards that will be molders and builders of a new generation of leaders that will have Solution mindsets and not Agitation mindsets.

Also among the Youth Leaders we will raise those who will be Value Orientation Vanguards that will serve as watchdogs over what happens in our various schools in our communities with the aim of bringing solutions to them. We can not leave this very important task in the hands of the government alone.

"It is our firm belief that Anambra Is ours and Anambra we serve, therefore we must work in collaboration with the State Government via the Ministries of Information & Value Reformation, the Ministry of Education and the Ministry of Youth Development & Sports and the 21 Local Government Councils in achieving this goal."

The Senior Special Assistant to the Governor on Political Matters, Hon Chinedu Ofojebe was invited as a special guest in the meeting. He admonished the Youth Leaders to remain agents of positive change and to mobilize the youths to participate in the democratic process of the country by registering to vote during elections.

Hon Ofojebe also encouraged the community youth leaders to continue to support the State Government led by Mr Governor, Prof. Chukwuma Charles Soludo CFR, in transforming Anambra State for common good. The meeting ended with the induction of new members.

Hon. Arinzechukwu Awogu’s bid to represent Ogbaru Federal Constituency in the House of Representatives received a strong show of support on Tuesday as youths and women across the area openly declared their backing for his 2027 ambition.

The endorsement came during a gathering held at Umu-Daike Village in Atani, Ogbaru Local Government Area, where young people drawn from different political backgrounds said the constituency needed a fresh direction and capable leadership.

Speaking at the meeting, the youths described the APC candidate for the January 16, 2027 National Assembly election as a trusted and dependable leader with the experience required to move Ogbaru forward.

According to them, Awogu enjoys widespread acceptance among ordinary people, remains accessible to residents, and possesses the qualities needed to effectively represent the constituency at the National Assembly.

The group stressed that, beyond party differences, their focus was on supporting a candidate they believe can deliver meaningful development and positive change for the people of Ogbaru.

Also addressing the gathering, Hon. Tochukwu Ike praised Awogu’s record as a former Chairman of Ogbaru Local Government Area. He noted that Awogu initiated several development projects during his tenure and earned recognition through various awards and commendations.

Ike argued that the constituency should make a careful choice in the next election, adding that Awogu stands out as the candidate best positioned to advance the interests of the people.

Women leaders at the event equally threw their weight behind the APC flag bearer. Speaking on their behalf, Mrs. Josephine Chukwuma said Awogu’s support cuts across different groups within the constituency.

The Youth Wing of the Anambra State Town Unions Council (ASTUC) has honoured eight distinguished individuals as outstanding role models in Ayamelum Local Government Area, in a move aimed at inspiring young people to embrace positive values and contribute meaningfully to society.

The event, which took place on Friday, June 19, at the Ayamelum Local Government Secretariat in Anaku, attracted hundreds of youths, traditional title holders, political office holders, industrialists, and community leaders who gathered to celebrate excellence and exemplary leadership.

These role models were selected from the 8 communities in Ayamelum which include, Bar Onuamah Ignatius Emenike, (Ezekwuche 1 of Omasi) - Omasi role model; Bro Anthony Nwalieji Chinweuba - Igbakwu role model; Chukwuma Nwalieji Reuben (ajuejiebuozu) - Umumbo role model; Chief Chimezie Cosmas Onyibor (mboma) - Umueje role model; Chief Ikechukwu Nobert Nebiefe (Mgbechikwelu) - Anaku role model; Barr Benjamin Anyafulu Onyeabo - Omor role model; Chief Ogugua Ebuka (Uzochukwumalu 1 of Ayamelum) - Umerum role model and Engr Paul Okafor - (FNSE, FNICE, FCSN, KSM) - Ifite Ogwari role model.

He encouraged young people to remain focused and committed to productive ventures. “As a young person, learn a trade or acquire a skill that will distinguish you. Governor Soludo, through the Ministry of Youth Development and Sports, has introduced the ‘One Youth, Two Skills’ programme, which has empowered thousands of youths across the state. I encourage our youths to take advantage of this opportunity by registering and acquiring valuable skills,” he said.

In his opening remarks, the Chairman of the Occasion, Chief Chimezie Okoye (Mmilienweilo), charged the newly honoured role models to serve as ambassadors of good governance and community development, noting that many young people look up to them for inspiration.

He further advised youths in Ayamelum to cultivate good character, discipline, and responsibility as essential ingredients for personal success and community progress.

Addressing the gathering, the ASTUC Youth President, His Youthfulness, Comrade Ken Okoli, described the award recipients as individuals who embody the community shared values and represent beacons of hope for the future of Anambra State.

According to him, each community in the state is expected to nominate a role model annually through a structured selection process designed to promote leadership, integrity, and community service.

Also speaking, the All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA) candidate for Ayamelum Local Government Chairmanship, Hon. Mgbechi Emmanuel Igwebuike, stated that the awardees were selected based on their contributions and positive impact within their respective communities.

He emphasized the importance of youth empowerment, saying, “The youths are the backbone of what I am doing today, and if elected, I will ensure they are carried along in governance and development initiatives.”

Some of the award recipients, including Chukwuma Reuben, Chimezie Oyibo and Bro. Chinweba Dieli, expressed gratitude for the recognition and pledged to continue serving as positive examples within their communities.

They called on youths to embrace peace, shun violence, and avoid the destruction of public and private property, stressing that such actions hinder development in the Ayamelum Local Government Area.

Dunukofia/Njikoka/Anaocha (DNA) Federal Constituency, has declared that his journey to the House of Representatives has already begun, promising a new chapter for the constituency ahead of the 2027 general election.

Fresh from receiving his Certificate of Return at the APGA Regional Office in Awka on Friday, Oba Ezeafia wasted little time looking ahead to the next political battle.

The APGA flagbearer, who emerged victorious in the party’s primary election, said he is not treating his nomination as a celebration point but as the beginning of serious work.

According to him, the task before him is bigger than politics and is rooted in a sense of purpose he believes has been divinely ordained.
“I have already started working,” he said confidently, stressing that he and his team are focused on delivering on what they believe is a God-given assignment.

PVCs Are The Key, He Says
With preparations for the 2027 elections gradually gathering momentum, Oba Ezeafia used the opportunity to call on eligible voters across Dunukofia, Njikoka and Anaocha to participate actively in the ongoing voter registration exercise.

Speaking about his decision to contest, the APGA candidate said the DNA Federal Constituency is due for a fresh approach to representation.

Rather than make long promises, he said he prefers to be judged by action.

The Alumni Association of Nwafor Orizu College of Education Nsugbe has pledged to work closely with the institution’s management to drive development and strengthen its long-standing reputation as one of Nigeria’s respected teacher training colleges.

The commitment came during a strategic meeting held at the college between the Alumni Executive Council and the newly appointed Provost, Prof. Victor Ndirika, alongside members of his management team. The engagement focused on how both sides can join forces to reposition the school for greater impact and ensure it continues to stand tall in Nigeria’s educational landscape.

For the alumni, the visit was more than a routine courtesy call. It carried emotional weight and a deep sense of responsibility. It was a return to familiar ground, a place where personal and professional foundations were first laid, and where a shared identity continues to bind generations together.

A homecoming filled with pride and reflection
Leading the delegation, the pioneer National President of the Alumni Association, Prince Emeka Ernest Oramadike, a 1987 graduate of Accounts and Economics, spoke with visible pride and reflection as he revisited memories of his time at the college. He described the institution as a strong foundation that has shaped the lives, values, and careers of countless former students now contributing across different sectors of society.

According to him, the discipline, mentorship, and commitment of lecturers and administrators over the years have continued to serve as a guiding light for alumni. He stressed that the college remains a “bedrock of excellence” that must not only be preserved but also strengthened and expanded for future generations who will pass through its gates.

Calls for stronger systems and deeper student connection
Prince Oramadike also commended the visible infrastructural improvements within the institution, noting that the transformation of the physical environment reflects a renewed sense of progress. He particularly praised the administration of Anambra State Governor Prof. Chukwuma Soludo for the road network upgrades around the campus, describing it as a development that enhances access, learning conditions, and the overall image of the school.

Beyond commendation, however, he used the opportunity to advocate for stronger institutional systems to deepen alumni engagement. He urged the college management to establish a structured and seamless process that would automatically enrol graduating students into the Alumni Association. In his view, such a system would help build a more connected, organised, and active alumni network capable of contributing meaningfully to the institution’s growth.

He also reflected on the vibrant social life that characterised student days in the 1980s, suggesting that modern students should be encouraged to experience a more engaging campus environment that fosters unity, identity, and lasting relationships.

Provost unveils vision for university status and expansion
In his response, Provost Prof. Victor Ndirika welcomed the alumni delegation with optimism and appreciation. He assured them that his administration is firmly committed to elevating the college to greater heights, with a long-term vision of transforming it into a full-fledged university.

He explained that deliberate strategies and developmental programmes are already being implemented to achieve this goal. He emphasised that collaboration with key stakeholders, particularly the alumni, would play a critical role in shaping the success of these plans.

Prof. Ndirika also drew attention to the institution’s growing agricultural ventures, which include poultry, piggery, goat farming, fish production, and extensive crop cultivation across its vast fertile land. He noted that these initiatives are not only designed for practical training but also present viable investment opportunities for partners willing to support or expand them.

He encouraged the Alumni Association to remain actively engaged in the affairs of the college, describing them as a vital pillar in the institution’s ongoing transformation.

Call for unity within the alumni structure
Contributing during the meeting, the National Legal Adviser of the Alumni Association, Barrister Nnadiume Awforkansi, raised concerns about the need to harmonise membership structures within the association. He specifically pointed to the differences between NCE and degree programme graduates, calling for a unified framework that would strengthen cohesion and prevent division within the body.

He emphasised that inclusiveness would enhance the association’s effectiveness and ensure that all former students feel fully represented under one umbrella.

Management expresses confidence in partnership
In his closing remarks, the College Bursar, Tony Aniebo, expressed confidence in the emerging partnership between the alumni and management. He stated that the collaboration would open new doors for institutional advancement and help reinforce administrative efficiency. He assured the delegation that the college would deploy all necessary systems to improve communication and strengthen alumni engagement.

Member of the Nigerian Chamber of Commerce, Industry and Agriculture, Sierra Leone, and Chief Executive Officer of Yennco World Trade Fair Limited, Dr. Onyeka Nwafor, has called on businesses, manufacturers, and entrepreneurs to participate actively in the maiden annual Nigeria-Sierra Leone Trade Fair scheduled to hold in Freetown, Sierra Leone.


The trade fair, which is expected to strengthen economic and commercial ties between both countries, will take place from July 27 to August 9, 2026, at the Miatta Conference Centre, Freetown.


Speaking ahead of the event, Dr. Nwafor said the primary objective of the fair is to promote Made-in-Nigeria products and create greater market access for Nigerian businesses in Sierra Leone and the wider West African region.


He noted that the annual trade volume between Nigeria and Sierra Leone currently stands at approximately $5 million and Nigeria's export valued at roughly $2.96 million, describing it as a modest but steadily growing bilateral economic relationship with significant potential for expansion.

According to him, the trade fair will provide exhibitors with numerous opportunities, including access to a massive audience, high-level networking with industry stakeholders, multi-channel media exposure, product launch platforms, business-to-business (B2B) matchmaking sessions, and participation certificates.


Dr. Nwafor emphasized that the event would serve as a strategic platform for fostering cross-border trade, attracting investment, and promoting economic cooperation between Nigeria and Sierra Leone.


He therefore urged government officials, manufacturers, exporters, small and medium-scale enterprises (SMEs), and investors to take advantage of the exhibition to showcase their products and services, build valuable partnerships, and explore new business opportunities in the region.

Rev. Fr. Emmanuel Obimma, Spiritual Director of the Holy Ghost Adoration Ministry, popularly known as Ebube Muonso, has declared his support for former Anambra State governor, Peter Obi, saying he believes he has what it takes to lead Nigeria successfully in the 2027 presidential election.

Speaking in Nkwelle Ezunaka, during a charity outreach where he shared bags of rice to hundreds of elderly persons in the community, the cleric said his conviction about Obi’s leadership ability comes from both personal belief and what he described as a strong sense of hope across the country.

The event, which took place in Nkwelle Ezunaka Town Hall, Oyi Local Government Area, drew residents who gathered to receive support as part of the cleric’s regular humanitarian activities. But beyond the food distribution, the gathering became a platform for a strong political message centred on unity, leadership, and the future of the country.

Ebube Muonso said that for many people in the South-East, Peter Obi represents hope and possibility. He described the former governor as a figure who has gained rare acceptance across different parts of Nigeria and even beyond its borders. According to him, such wide recognition is not common and should not be ignored by the people of the region.

He urged people from the South-East to close ranks and support Obi’s political journey, stressing that unity among the Igbo remains key to achieving meaningful progress in national politics. Fr Emmanuel Obimma, popularly known as Ebube Muonso, on Saturday brought joy to hundreds of elderly residents of Nkwelle Ezunaka in Oyi Local Government Area of Anambra State as he distributed bags of rice and monthly financial support to senior citizens who gathered at the Nkwelle Ezunaka Town Hall for the outreach programme.

The event, which has now become a regular feature in the community, drew elderly men and women, who gathered to receive the assistance from the cleric widely known for his charitable activities.

A Mission of Love for the Elderly
Speaking shortly after the distribution, Fr Obimma said his commitment to caring for older people comes from a deep respect for old age and a strong desire to improve the lives of those who have spent many years serving society and their families.

According to him, supporting the elderly is not a one-off programme but a long-standing mission that has remained close to his heart.

“I always look forward to spending time with the elderly in my community. This has become a routine for me because I have great love and respect for old people,” he said.

The founder of the Holy Ghost Adoration Ministry, Uke, explained that the beneficiaries not only receive food items regularly but are also placed on monthly financial support to help them meet their daily needs. He noted that while each beneficiary receives monthly allowance, retired priests and other clerics under the scheme receive additional support.

He added that the programme extends beyond Nkwelle Ezunaka and reaches many other people across different communities and even outside Nigeria through various charitable initiatives coordinated by the ministry.

“Today, hundreds of elderly people from this community are benefiting from this outreach. We have been doing this consistently for almost four years, and by the grace of God, it will continue for as long as I live,” he said.

‘Their Joy Gives Me Joy’
Fr Obimma said the greatest reward for him is seeing the happiness and relief on the faces of the beneficiaries.

“When I see them smiling and praying happily, it gives me fulfilment. Their joy is my joy,” he added.

The priest also used the opportunity to advise young people to develop a culture of honouring and caring for older members of society. He stressed that respect for elders remains an important value that should never be abandoned.

According to him, young people who show kindness and respect to elderly persons often receive valuable blessings, guidance and wisdom in return.

“If you desire a long life, learn to respect those who are older than you. Treat them with dignity and kindness. Their prayers and blessings are powerful. If you want to reach their age, appreciate and honour them,” he said.

Fr Obimma revealed that the prayers he receives from the elderly have remained one of his greatest sources of encouragement.
“Every day they pray for me. I believe those prayers are one of the reasons God continues to bless the work we do. The saying that givers never lack is very true,” he said.

90-Day Prayer Programme Enters Charity Week
Speaking on activities currently ongoing in his ministry, the cleric disclosed that the Holy Ghost Adoration Ministry is presently holding a 90-Day Prayer March Programme themed “Breaking Limitations and Open Doors.”

According to him, the spiritual exercise will climax with a major programme scheduled to hold from June 30 to July 5, 2026.

He explained that the current week has been set aside as a special charity week as part of the prayer programme, combining spiritual exercises with practical acts of compassion and service to humanity.

₦50 Million Set Aside for Hospital Patients
Looking ahead, the cleric announced another major charitable outreach scheduled for next week. He disclosed plans to visit hospitals and settle medical bills for patients, with about ₦50 million already earmarked for the intervention.

“This week is dedicated to helping people through charity. Next week, we will move to hospitals where we intend to clear medical bills worth about ₦50 million for patients who need support,” he stated.

Fr Obimma further revealed that after the hospital outreach, he would embark on a 21-day period of spiritual retreat, fasting and prayer in preparation for the grand finale of the 90-Day Prayer March Programme.

He said prayer, charity and service to humanity remain central pillars of his ministry, adding that his mission is not only to preach the Gospel but also to touch lives through acts of love and compassion.

The highlight of Saturday’s gathering was an emotional session of prayers as the elderly beneficiaries lifted their voices in appreciation, praying for God’s continued protection, strength and blessings upon the priest. Fr Obimma also offered prayers and blessings for the elderly in return.

Speaking on behalf of the beneficiaries, one of the coordinators, Ma Angelina Ugonma Chukwura, described Fr Obimma as a dependable source of support for the elderly in the community.

She said the priest has consistently shown genuine concern for their welfare and has never turned his back on them whenever challenges arise.

“We thank God for giving us a man like Fr Obimma. He is always there whenever we need help. He listens to us, supports us and takes care of us like a loving son cares for his mother. We pray that God will continue to guide, protect and strengthen him,” she said.

Another coordinator, Iyom Irene Oraefo from Ifite Village, Nkwelle Ezunaka, also expressed gratitude, saying the cleric’s generosity has touched many lives.

Ven. Tochukwu Sagacious Ikezue has declared that his journey to the Senate is a rescue mission aimed at restoring quality representation, rebuilding public confidence and returning Anambra Central to what he describes as people-focused leadership.

The Labour Party senatorial candidate made the declaration during an exclusive interview with Globefrontier shortly after emerging as the party's flagbearer for Anambra Central at the primary election held in Awka on Saturday.

Speaking with confidence after securing the ticket, Ikezue described his victory at the primary as more than an internal party success. According to him, it marks the beginning of a larger movement to reclaim what he believes rightfully belongs to the Labour Party.

"What we did here today may appear small to some people, but it is much bigger than that," he said. "The current occupant of the Anambra Central Senate seat came into office through the Labour Party. That seat belongs to Labour Party and it is coming back to Labour Party. That is not negotiable. We are reclaiming our mandate and our votes must count."

The Anglican cleric said his decision to seek election was inspired by the concerns he encountered while interacting with residents across communities within the senatorial district. It was a moment of deep reflection, emotion and celebration of a life well lived as the Catholic Bishop of Nnewi Diocese, Most Rev. (Dr.) Jonas Benson Okoye, paid glowing tribute to late Mrs Christiana Onuabuchi Ekwezor (Nee Nwankwo Aforka), during her wake Mass held at her husband’s country home in Agbana Village, Umuawulu, Awka South Local Government Area of Anambra State.

The solemn gathering attracted family members, friends, church faithful, community leaders and well-wishers who came to honour the memory of the late matriarch, remembered for her humility, kindness, strong Christian faith and devotion to family values.

Delivering a touching homily, Bishop Okoye reminded the congregation that death is not the end for true believers in Christ.

“A true Christian never truly dies, but lives on in Christ,” the Bishop declared, urging Christians to always live righteous and purposeful lives in preparation for eternity.

He stressed that the true measure of parenthood is not merely in giving birth to children, but in laying a solid moral and spiritual foundation for them. According to him, good mothers shape the future through the values they instil in their children.

The Bishop described late Mrs Christiana Onuabuchi Ekwezor as a virtuous woman whose exemplary life continues to shine through her children. He noted that the achievements, discipline and conduct of her children, especially Dr Azubuike Augustine Ekwezor, clearly reflected the quality upbringing and sound values she gave them.

Bishop Okoye further encouraged the faithful not to become too attached to the temporary pleasures and distractions of the world. He described death as a transition to eternal life with God and urged everyone to live each day in readiness for eternity.

Addressing the Ekwezor family directly, the cleric told the children of the deceased that none of them should miss heaven because of the strong spiritual foundation their mother laid for them. He urged them to continue upholding the virtues of faith, humility, kindness, peace and love for which their mother was known.

The Bishop also thanked God for blessing the late Mrs Ekwezor with successful and impactful children. He specially acknowledged the benevolence and goodwill previously shown to him by Dr Azubuike Augustine Ekwezor, describing the gesture as commendable and a reflection of the values inherited from their mother.

He concluded his sermon with prayers for God to grant eternal rest to the soul of late Mrs Christiana Onuabuchi Ekwezor and strength to the family she left behind.

In his remarks, the Parish Priest of Saint Joseph Catholic Church, Umuawulu, Rev. Fr. Benjamin Odika, expressed deep appreciation to Bishop Okoye for what he described as a soul-lifting and spiritually enriching homily.

Rev. Fr. Odika thanked God for using the Bishop to teach the congregation about the deeper things of God and for the fatherly advice he offered to young people during the Mass. He also praised the late Mrs Ekwezor for living a worthy Christian life marked by good conduct and devotion to God.

According to him, the good works and virtues she displayed while alive gave confidence that she is resting peacefully in the bosom of the Lord.

Speaking on behalf of the Ekwezor family, Dr Azubuike Augustine Ekwezor expressed heartfelt gratitude to Bishop Okoye for the love, care and spiritual support shown to the family during their time of mourning.

He described the Bishop’s presence and prayers as a great source of strength and comfort to the family. Dr Ekwezor also thanked all those who attended the wake Mass and stood by the family with prayers, encouragement and support.

He said the overwhelming show of love and solidarity from friends, relatives, associates and well-wishers had brought great comfort to the family in their moment of grief.

A former Publicity Secretary of the Anambra State chapter of the People's Democratic Party (PDP), Mr Nnamdi Nwangwu, has rejected claims that the Presidential Candidate of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), Mr Peter Obi, is against Northern Nigeria.

Mr Nwangwu, who recently joined the NDC, spoke to journalists at his residence in Uruagu, Nnewi, where he described the allegations as false and politically motivated.

According to him, the repeated narratives portraying Mr Obi as anti-North were created by political opponents worried about the growing popularity of the former Anambra State governor across the country.

He said the campaign against the NDC presidential hopeful would not succeed because many Nigerians already know the kind of leader Mr Obi is.

“The allegations are simply a campaign of calumny aimed at damaging the image of a man whose political acceptance continues to rise across Nigeria,” he said.

Mr Nwangwu stated that Mr Obi maintained a strong relationship with different ethnic and religious groups during his time as governor of Anambra State.

He explained that the former governor regularly met with Northern leaders and members of Hausa communities living in the state.

According to him, those meetings often took place at the Government Lodges in Amawbia and Onitsha, where Mr Obi interacted freely with residents from different parts of the country.

The former PDP spokesman added that the former governor also extended similar gestures to Yoruba residents and other non-indigenes living in Anambra State.

He said the gatherings helped to promote unity and made many residents from outside the South-East feel accepted and protected while living in the state.

Mr Nwangwu further claimed that Mr Obi used some of those meetings to introduce welfare support for vulnerable persons, including struggling families and unaccompanied minors facing economic hardship.

He noted that such programmes reflected the inclusive style of leadership the former governor was known for during his administration.

“Mr Peter Obi gave many non-indigenes in Anambra a sense of belonging. People from different regions benefited from his open-door policy and social support initiatives,” he stated.

The former PDP image maker also argued that the anti-North narrative does not match the political history of the former governor.

He recalled that Northern and Muslim communities in Anambra reportedly maintained cordial relations with Mr Obi throughout his eight years in office.

According to him, several groups from the North benefited from welfare packages and enjoyed peaceful coexistence during that period.

Mr Nwangwu said those pushing the allegations had failed to provide evidence to support their claims.

He insisted that the attacks were designed to weaken the growing national influence of the NDC candidate ahead of the 2027 presidential election.

He added that Nigerians were now more interested in competence, accountability and leadership capacity than divisive political propaganda.

The former spokesman maintained that attempts to portray Mr Obi as hostile to any region of the country would not change public opinion about him.

He expressed confidence that the NDC candidate would continue to gain support from different parts of Nigeria despite ongoing political criticism.
