This patent was filed by OPPO in February but was only approved and published on September 3. As usual, the documents for this patent was unearthed by none other than LetsGoDigital and the publication even imagined the final design of a smartphone with this hinge in 3D renders.



According to the patent diagrams and documents, this hinge is wider than any other hinge present in currently available foldable [url=https://www.google.hr/url?sa=t&url=https%3A%2F%2Fnaijatechclan.com/]smartphones[/url]. It features a pair of rotatable cover plates coupled to the support plate to mitigate the length between the screen and the housing while folding and unfolding.

This hinge also allows the users to fix the display of the phone at four points – 30°, 60°, 90°, and 190° respectively. Since this hinge is meant for clamshell foldable, we cam imagine use cases like Flex Mode on Galaxy Z Flip.









Interestingly, one of the documents also mentions that this hinge will enable crease-free display experience, which is a bold claim. Anway, patents are patents and not all come into fruition. Hopefully, this one does.

Just this week, an odd occurrence took place in Beijing, China. On the evening of 12th October 2020, numerous netizens found that the time displayed on their Android smartphones were more than 10 minutes behind the actual Beijing time.

In a move that may forever change what it means to be ratio’d, Twitter is testing some new language on tweet metrics, making quotes (also known as retweets with comments) visible on each tweet, the company confirmed Saturday.

“A few months ago, we’ve made Retweets with Comments more visible when you tap to see Retweets on a Tweet,” a Twitter spokesperson wrote in an email to The Verge. “This is available to everyone. Now, we’re testing making Retweets with Comments accessible directly on the Tweet and new language (Quotes) to see if this makes them easier to access and more understandable.”

The US has accused Huawei of building backdoors into network infrastructure, ostensibly to aid Chinese government spying efforts. Huawei has denied the Trump administration’s accusations of spying. But the Trump administration placed Huawei and 114 of its affiliates on its Entity List in May 2019, which meant US firms were unable to sell technology to the company without explicit US government approval.

It also meant Google was barred from doing business with Huawei, preventing Huawei from being able to obtain an Android license and keeping Google apps off [url=https://www.mmamania.com/users/Nwankwo%20Chidera]Huawei devices[/url]. The order used the International Emergency Economic Powers Act to justify the ban, and reads that “openness must be balanced by the need to protect our country against critical national security threats.”

Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Co. (TSMC), the largest semiconductor manufacturer in the world, reportedly halted orders for Huawei’s HiSilicon unit in May following the new US rule.

Despite the ban in the US, earlier this year, Huawei bested Samsung as the world’s biggest smartphone seller, shipping more phones between April and June than any other company, according to analyst firm Canalys.

The Wall Street Journal reported Saturday that American chipmaker Qualcomm had asked the Trump administration to ease the restrictions on the sale of components to Huawei, and allow it to sell chips to Huawei for use in its 5G phones.

Microsoft has spent the past few weeks teasing the Surface Duo on Twitter, and it now looks like the dual-screen device is ready to launch. Microsoft’s new Android-powered device first appeared at the FCC earlier this week, and today it has shown up on the Bluetooth SIG certification page. Devices typically appear in FCC and Bluetooth listings just a few weeks away from launch.

Recent rumors had suggested the Surface Duo might appear in July, but it’s clear the device isn’t ready to launch this month. Instead, it looks increasingly likely that Microsoft will launch the Surface Duo in the coming weeks.

Sources familiar with Microsoft’s plans tell The Verge that the company had originally planned to focus on the Surface Duo and dual-screen devices at Build earlier this year. These plans changed once it was clear Build would be held virtually due to the pandemic, and Microsoft also pushed back its Windows 10X dual-screen plans to far beyond 2020.

While some developers already have access to dual-screen developer units, Microsoft had planned at one point to get Surface Duo to developers a lot sooner. Like many things, the pandemic has impacted Surface Duo launch plans, but we understand Microsoft is still hoping to ship the device by the end of September.

Adding fuel to the Surface Duo launch rumors, phone leaker Evan Blass has also hinted that the Surface Duo will appear on AT&T’s network in the US. Blass typically obtains marketing images and materials of unreleased phones a few weeks or months before they’re about to launch, which also suggests that the Surface Duo is nearly ready to go.

Microsoft has also spent the summer teasing the Surface Duo on Twitter ahead of its launch. Microsoft’s communications chief, Frank Shaw, posted a photo of the Surface Duo earlier this month, just days after Surface chief Panos Panay teased the device on Twitter with what appeared to be a new bumper case. This same case also appeared in a video on LinkedIn featuring Microsoft executive Brad Anderson last week.

Microsoft first unveiled the Surface Duo at a press event in New York City back in October, promising a holiday 2020 launch for the device. While the company has not shared official hardware specifications just yet, leaks have suggested it will include a Qualcomm Snapdragon 855 processor, 6GB of RAM, up to 256GB of storage, and include two 5.6-inch displays.

Microsoft has recently rolled out two emergency updates that fix certain security flaws in its Windows 10 and Windows Server operating systems. This update arrives just two weeks earlier than its regular Tuesday Patch cycle.



According to Microsoft, the flaws had not been publicly revealed so its chances of exploitation were low, but regardless, the company hurried to patch the vulnerabilities that affected both platforms rather than waiting for the July 14 update cycle. The security flaws in question have been labeled as CVE-2020-1425 and CVE-2020-1457, which allow exploiters to execute arbitrary code and take control of the affected computer.

Apparently, these flaws existed due to the way Windows Codecs Library handles objects in memory. In other words, a potential attacker could hack into a system by using a crafted image file that would need to launch on the targeted computer. The company also revealed the list of the versions of operating systems that suffered from this issue, which includes:

The security flaws were first reported to the company by Trend Micro Zero Day Initiative security researcher Abdul-Aziz Hariri. Users can now download the update from the Microsoft Store in the forms of patches that will update the Windows Media Codec. Although, these updates have been sent out automatically as well.

Apple is expected to launch its first 5G smartphones in the form of iPhone 12 series later this year. The American tech giant was previously forecasted to ship 30-40 million units. But now, as per the latest report by DigiTimes, the estimation has been decremented by half to only 15-20 million units for 2020.



The report says the supply chain partners of Apple are less optimistic about mmWave-enabled iPhone 12 series set for launch this year. The competition between the suppliers is also intense given the lower number of units.

Apple has been long relying on Taiwanese manufacturers to assemble its devices. But currently, Chinese manufacturers are on the rise as the company is diversifying its supply chain.

According to the report, Apple has willingly increased the involvement of Chinese companies to assemble iPads, Apple Watches, and even AirPods. This is said to be “growing threats” for Taiwanese companies who had enjoyed their monopoly for years.

As for Apple, it is doing this to “cut costs, diversify production risks and better tap the Chinese market”.

That said, the proper reason for the lower shipments than the previous estimation is vague at the moment. It could be possibly due to the pandemic as the world economy has tanked hard in recent months.

Facebook published new recommendations for group admins yesterday evening in an attempt to help them facilitate conversations about race and inequality. Groups, which are essential to Facebook’s business strategy, have struggled to moderate discussions about the Black Lives Matter movement and injustice in the US, with many admins and moderators deleting posts they consider “political.” The deletion decisions prompted members to leave groups they’d been in for years, argue with each other, form splinter groups, and sometimes temporarily shut the groups down entirely.

Facebook directly addresses the political post ban that many groups follow and recommends that leaders create specific lists of topics that aren’t allowed. It cites “discussions on legislation, political candidates, or specific campaigns” as examples. Facebook has previously recommended that groups create a list of rules to help moderate conversation, but these rules appear to be what’s tripping moderators up now. A group dedicated to the musician Hozier, for example, allowed Hozier’s own political statements to stay live, but moderators deleted members’ thoughts, as The Verge documented in a separate story yesterday.

Facebook also recommends in its post that admins educate themselves on the issues; “create opportunities for new and diverse members” to join the moderation team; acknowledge current events with a post that outlines rules; listen to members; be “open to change” around what posts are allowed; and potentially approve all posts before they go live.

“We know these conversations are hard and reflect ongoing disparities in our society,” Facebook writes. “They are also necessary, and we hope that we can continue to help you facilitate ongoing discussions and learning.”
