I reside in Port Harcourt in Rivers State with My Young family of three. I moved into my current apartment last year May, after i got transferred from Lagos to Port Harcourt.
Please note that when I got the apartment, the landlord doesn't use the service of a Lawyer, he asked me to pay the sum of #700,000 for the two bedroom flat apartment as the total package. When I inquired about the lawyer and agent,he said he's the all in one.

Fast-forward to this year when I was about to renew my rent, I asked him how much I'm to pay he said I'm to pay the same #700,000 again, I asked him if that's the amount other tenants pay he answered me yes. I immediately renewed my rent without questions.

Just this Sunday 27th of July 2025 my doorbell rang when I opened My door i saw my landlord's servant and his little son, they handed my an envelope and left. When I opened it I saw NOTICE OF HOUSE RENT INCREMENT FROM #700,000 TO #1.2,000,000, with the service of an unknown Lawyer from no where.

With this development I came to realize that amongst the five tenants occupying his building I'm the only one paying the sum of #700,000, one other tenant pays #600,000 and the remaining four tenants pay #500,000 respectively. The increment was made #1.2,000,000 for everyone.

My anger and questions now is;
Firstly my landlord lied to me when I renewed my rent.
Secondly, is there any law in Nigeria that supports this outrageous and barbaric increment of rentage. Please lawyers in the house can lend their advice too.

My first instinct was to call the lawyer and insult him but i decided otherwise.
My landlord is not formally educated and hails from Ebonyi state. I work with one of the paramilitary Agency in the country.
