CelebritiesIni Edo Bounced From Societal Event (PHOTO) by opeeedo(op): 1:22pm On Aug 18, 2013
Last Sunday, August 11, was one that may not have ended on a happy note for Nollywood diva, Ini Edo. It was a day when telecommunication giant, Globacom, launched its Lagos edition of the Glo Slide and Bounce concert with all the ambassadors of the brand expected to attend the event.
Among these were chart-bursting artistes in Nigeria: Tuface, Naeto C, Psquare, Burma Boy, Waje, Omawunmi as well as top Nollywood actors.
Honouring the call in her capacity as an ambassador of the brand, Ini Edo arrived promptly, a little earlier than the scheduled time of 6pm and made her way to the back entrance of the Oriental Hotel, Lekki which led to the main hall.
However, she was prevented entry by overzealous bouncers who advised her to wait till 6.pm. The actress complied and hung around the car park, but it was not until 9.pm that a visibly offended Ini Edo was spotted being led into the hall by the duo of Jumobi Mofe-Damijo and Desmond Elliot.
This untoward treatment continued when the compere, Okey Bakassi, acknowledged the presence of all the Glo ambassadors present, calling out their names one after the other, but leaving out Ini Edo’s name!
This he did twice in a row and this must obviously have irked the actress. When Bakassi remembered to acknowledge her presence during his third announcement, Ini Edo had gone.

Nairaland GeneralGuard On Rescue Mission Mistakenly Kills Boss by opeeedo(op): 8:26am On Aug 12, 2013
https://img.naij.com/n/0c/3/salami-and-awolesi.jpgThe Lagos State Police Command has arrested a 30-year-old security guard, Segun Salami, for allegedly killing his boss, Alhaji Taiyewo Awolesi, in Ewuowa, Ikorodu area of the state.
The police said the suspect was on his way to rescue Awolesi, who was being harassed by touts in the area, when he shot him in error.

But Salami said the bullet, which killed his master on July 25, 2013, did not emanate from his gun.

Salami, said, “I am a security guard in the neighbourhood and I am also a bricklayer at a cemetery in the area. A telecoms company is constructing a mast on Alhaji’s (Awolesi’s) property and he called me to help him to do some work.

“After I had completed the work, he gave me N500 and I left. I was on my way to the cemetery when I started hearing gunshots.

“Alhaji called me on the telephone, saying I should come to his rescue because touts were harassing him for money because of the mast being constructed on his land.

“I went to get my locally made gun, put some gun powder in it and rushed back to Alhaji’s land which is very close to the cemetery.”
Salami said on arriving at the scene, he met a large number of thugs. He said he instructed the deceased to run away from the scene and report at the police station.
He said he had not even brought out his gun when the deceased was killed.
He said, “I strapped the gun to my back and was attempting to disperse the thugs when someone shot Alhaji.
“Immediately after Alhaji fell to the ground, all the hoodlums fled. I tried to get him to a hospital but he died on the way.”

The indigene of Ijebu Ode, Ogun State, described the incident as the handiwork of the devil.
The suspect, who claimed to be married with two children, said the deceased was his benefactor.
“Alhaji was a very nice man. When my wife gave birth to a baby boy two weeks ago, he gave us money. It was those hoodlums that caused the whole thing,” he said.
When asked if he was licensed to own a gun, he said, “The gun was not mine, it belonged to my grandfather and we used to to hunt birds.”
It was learnt that Awolesi had been buried according to Islamic rites.
The Police Public Relations Officer, Ngozi Braide, said she would call back.

Nairaland GeneralWoman Goes Mad After Seeing Her Baby Killed By Doctors by opeeedo(op): 11:31pm On Aug 09, 2013
https://img.naij.com/n/09/4/original-1308071424042320-386x450.jpg
A woman in central China’s Hunan Province slid into madness after being forced into labor, at seven months of pregnancy, so that her baby could be killed. Her husband, Wu Yongyuan, has been seeking redress and compensation, to little effect.
Woman Goes Mad After Seeing Her Baby Killed by Doctors
“She is afraid of going out and seeing strangers. She often bites me. She is also afraid of seeing doctors and needles,”
Wu said.
The sight that triggered his wife’s descent was a doctor dropping her just-born baby into a plastic bag and paying a cleaning lady 80 yuan ($13) to bury it.
“The baby was still breathing and moving when the doctor put him into a plastic bag,” Wu said.
Later, his wife started having nightmares. She felt guilty for not having protected her child. She also became ill-tempered and started showing signs of mental disorder.
His wife was officially diagnosed with schizophrenia on June 14, but Wu has been unable to afford psychiatric treatment. He demanded compensation from local authorities and the provincial family planning bureau, but none have seen fit to respond.
Wu and his wife Gong Qifeng are residents of Anping Town, Lianyuan City in Hunan. In a telephone interview with Epoch Times, Wu said that family planning officials took his wife from their home.
He went to the local family planning office and was told that his wife must undergo induced labor, despite Wu’s pleas against it.
Two hours later, a family planning official called to tell him that his wife was given a shot. When Wu rushed to the hospital, his wife said four people had held her down while a doctor gave her an injection in the belly. “She was very scared. But she could not fight back. She just cried loudly,” Wu said.

“‘My husband is disabled. Don’t induce labor on me,’ she said, but they ignored her plea,” Wu added.
After lying in excruciating pain for 35 hours, Gong gave birth to a baby boy. Gong told Wu to keep the baby, but the doctor stopped him and said the injection was lethal and the baby would die soon.
That’s when the doctor dropped the baby into a bag and paid the cleaning lady, who told him she’d bury the body at a nearby mountain. Wu has posted the story online, but unlike other extreme incidents of abuse associated with the enforcement of the one child policy, the reaction has been muted.
He recently began speaking about his wife’s ordeal to Chinese media, including accusing a family planning official of forging his signature on an agreement to induce labor in his wife. Afterwards, several family planning officials threatened to seek revenge if they lost their jobs, Wu said.
Shocking accounts of late term forced abortions appear periodically in the Chinese press. Congressman Chris Smith has commented that abortion is “a weapon of mass destruction” in China.he said during a
“Today in China, rather than being given maternal care, pregnant women without birth allowed permits are hunted down and forcibly aborted,”
hearing in July of 2012.
The Chinese regime initiated population control policies in the 1970s, and stepped up the efforts in the 1980s with the one-child policy.
Doctors in China have performed 336 million abortions and 196 million sterilizations, and inserted 403 million intrauterine devices over the decades, according to official statistics.
Every year they abort roughly 7 million pregnancies, sterilize almost two million men and women, and insert seven million intrauterine devices, according to data from the Ministry of Health.

CrimeRemembering ANINI The Thief. by opeeedo(op): 4:01pm On Aug 05, 2013
The Free Encyclopedia wrote of him thus:
“Lawrence Nomanyagbon Anini (c. 1960 – March 29, 1987) was a Nigerian bandit who terrorized Benin City in the 1980s along with his sidekick Monday Osunbor. He was captured and executed for his crimes.
He was born Lawrence Nomanyagbon Anini; but he re-christened himself ANINI THE LAW. He sent fears and chills down the spine of many a Nigerian – particularly residents of Benin city in the old Bendel State!
To underscore his notoriety, especially the embarrassing registration of his presence in the consciousness of Nigerians right up to the Presidency, his dangerous and awe-inspiring exploits compelled then military President, Ibrahim Badamasi Babangida, to ask his Inspector General of Police, IGP, Etim Inyang, the very famous question: “My friend, where is Anini”?
Anini The Law, as he was known then, grew larger than life such that the myth woven around him was so deifying that people actually thought he was a god or some type of spirit being that he was imbued with the qualities of omnipotence, omnipresent and omniscience.
He operated a team of just about four to five members. For a skilled taxi driver who was born in a village just some 20kms from the heart of Benin city, Anini became a Capone in his own right at the motor parks; this, after serving time with some leaders of gangs in the underworld.
He was said to have struck a deal with some policemen to help suppress evidence in a case involving some members of his gang but the deal did not yield the desired result.
This, reports had it, led to his anger against the police for betraying him. It is for this reason that Oyakhire and some other very senior police officers had to be drafted to Benin for his case. So notorious was Anini that even WIKIPEDIA could not but acknowledge that he once existed
“Anini was born in a village about 20 miles from Benin City in present day Edo State. He migrated to Benin at an early age, learned to drive and became a skilled taxi driver in a few years. He became known in Benin motor parks as a man who could control the varied competing interest among motor park touts and operators.
He later dived into the criminal business in the city and soon became a driver and transporter for gangs, criminal godfathers and thieves. Later on, he decided to create his own gang and they started out as car hijackers, bus robbers and bank thieves. Gradually, he extended his criminal acts to other towns and cities far north and east of Benin.
The complicity of the police is believed to have triggered Anini’s reign of terror in 1986. In early 1986, two members of his gang were tried and prosecuted against an earlier under-the-table bribe induced agreement with the police to destroy evidence against the gang members.
The incident, and Anini’s view of police betrayal, is believed to have spurred retaliatory actions by Anini. On August, 1986, a fatal bank robbery linked to Anini was reported in which a police officer and a child were killed. That same month, two officers on duty were shot at a barricade while trying to stop Anini’s car. During a span of three months, he was known to have killed 9 police officers. He wrote numerous letters to media houses using political tones of Robin Hood-like words to describe his criminal acts.
On December 3, 1986, he was caught at a house off a main street of Benin City in the company of a girl friend. Anini was shot in the leg, transferred to a military hospital, and had one of his legs amputated. The country’s military leader, Babangida, demanded a speedy trial. Anini was convicted of most of his charges and was executed on March 29, 1987; also his friend Monday Osunbor was sentenced to death.
*Many years later Police and thieves are still best friends and still kill each other.na wah!

Entertainment"I Have Not Been Able To Find A Husband Because Of My Late Father" –yeni Kuti by opeeedo(op): 3:18pm On Aug 05, 2013
https://img.naij.com/n/10/e/yeni-620x350.jpg
At 52, Yeni Kuti, daughter and first child of the late Afro beat musician, Fela Anikulapo Kuti is full of life. She still loves to dance and can wriggle her waist like she used to do at 27 when she started dancing professionally with the band.
The mother of one, whose marriage crashed some years ago was at home in her New African Shrine office. In this interview she talks about not having any time to contemplate getting married again. She unveils her lifestyle, fashion sense, how she quit smoking and the challenges of managing Africa Shrine.
photo
At 52, you still look strong and dashing, what is the secret?
I think the first secret behind my looks is to be happy. Try your best to smile or even laugh no matter what you are confronted with. That is what I do. I try as much as possible to laugh a lot. Then apart from laughing, I try to watch what I eat because even if I start laughing from now till eternity without a good diet, I may not get a good result. But I must be honest with you, some months back, I wasn’t eating healthy. I was eating everything I see. But now, I have reduced that. I don’t eat much of junk these days but if I’m very hungry and junk food is what I see, I eat but I don’t eat much of that. Another thing that helps me to keep fit is that I love to dance. Oh yes, I still dance a lot. While doing my dance class I burn excess fat in the process. I dance three times in a week – twice with the band and once for my dance class where I teach people how to dance Afro beat. Finally, I don’t take my dinner anything beyond 7 p.m.
Besides these, do you still drink and smoke?
I don’t drink beer or brandy but I can take alcoholic wine, especially Champaign. I drank a lot last night at the party of my good friend who clocked 50. I take soft drinks once in a while unlike before when I used to have it with every meal. I do a TV show every Thursday so I have to wake up at 4.30 a.m. on Thursdays to go for it because it is a life show. For that, I have curbed my alcohol intake a lot. I may take it once or twice in a week. As for smoking, I don’t smoke anymore. I must tell you it was very difficult to stop. I tried for several years to quit but all to no avail. I wouldn’t smoke for, like two or three weeks, and then I would start all over again. Smoking, honestly, is a very difficult habit to stop. What really gingered me to stop was when my daughter was entering university and I thought it over and said to myself, if I continue this my smoking habit and I die in the process before she graduates, how would she graduate? Who would pay her fees? It is only me she has. That was enough inspiration for me not to smoke because I wanted to be alive to see my daughter graduate.
How about guys then, were they relating with you? Did some of them woo you?
Guys didn’t have negative impression of me. The toasters were game. It is only their parents that didn’t just like me. They didn’t want their sons to go out or date Fela’s child. There were times they walked me away when I came visiting. There was a particular woman who seriously warned me never to come to her house to visit her son who was my boyfriend then. She was actually very nasty about my coming to see her son, I mean very nasty, she didn’t hide it at all. Her son was nice to me and was my boyfriend but his mother didn’t like me one but because of my father. In fact, she came one day and descended on me when I visited. It was a very ugly scene. I really don’t want to remember it although the whole thing is still fresh in my memory. The whole scenario that happened is still etched in my memory.
She walked you out of her son’s residence, did you cry later?

No, I didn’t cry! Did I cry that I wasn’t proud of my father or what? Or that I was ashamed of my father or what? They are the ones with a problem and not me. But that kind of thing would annoy me. They never made me cry or shed tears.
How was the relationship with your boyfriend, his mother having walked you out?

The relationship didn’t continue. We broke up. It didn’t just last. I knew that at times many parents didn’t want their sons dating me. That was why I wasn’t keen to meet people’s parents. I was very nervous about meeting people’s parents.
You were once married, what led to the breakup?
Yes, I was once married when I was in my 20s. My marriage then was fine but honestly I would not want to talk about my marriage. You can ask me about other things but not my marriage because I believe it is too personal to talk about. My ex-husband and I are still very friendly. We have a daughter between us. Please let’s leave it at that.
Have you ever felt like remarrying?

There was never a time I was in desperate need of another marriage. But I’m in a very happy relationship and I really don’t think I need to be married to be happy. Our relationship has been going on for a few years. I’m not a marriage kind of person. I have experienced it before and I don’t need to experience it again to know that I’m a human being or to know I’m a fulfilled woman. I’m quite okay with myself. I’m not missing marriage at all and as I said, I’m in a good relationship. I don’t need to get married to know that I’m happy.

Crime"Voices Told Me To Kill My Sons" - 29-year-old Mother Who Stabbed Her Two Sons by opeeedo(op): 2:41pm On Aug 05, 2013
A mother charged with fatally stabbing her two young sons told police she is schizophrenic and that voices told her to do it, court records show.

Jamina Briggs, 29, also told officers who arrived at her home on Wednesday night that she was sorry about the stabbings, according to an affidavit of complaint.
https://img.naij.com/n/08/a/jamina-briggs-large.jpgOfficers arrested Briggs after they found the boys, 6-year-old Nicholas Briggs and 23-month-old Jeremiah Briggs, lying face down on a couch with multiple stab wounds. The boys died at a hospital.
Briggs was charged with first-degree murder Thursday. She has a criminal record that includes two guilty pleas for domestic assault for fights she had with her mother and boyfriend.
Briggs' lawyer, Gerald Skahan, said she is awaiting a mental evaluation at the Memphis Mental Health Institute. She has a court appearance scheduled for Aug. 16.
Police said Briggs called them to her east Memphis apartment and told the call taker that she had stabbed her sons.
"She said she is paranoid schizophrenic and the voices told her to do it," the affidavit said.
Later when officers arrived at the home, Briggs "answered the door and told officers she was sorry."
"She had blood on her hands," the affidavit said.
