WHY HAS THE LIFE EXPECTANCY OF A NIGERIAN REDUCED TO 45 YEARS The World Health Organisation reports that the life expectancy of the average Nigerian is now set at age 45. Other statistics show that by 2025, there would be 50% outbreak of diseases like cancer, diabetes, prostatitis, arthritis and stroke. Cardiovascular diseases would also be the cause of 30% of global death. All around the world and in particular Nigeria, these degenerating diseases are ravaging the society and killing people in millions faster than the dreaded HIV/AIDS. The most saddening part of the story is that we buy these diseases with our money as these diseases are usually caused by a “Wrong Life-Style” and “Bad Eating Habits”. Research has shown that the important factors that determine how healthy we are include: A Balanced and Nutrient-rich Diet, Exercise and Physical Activity, Quality Rest, Weight Management. 1. Nutrient-Rich Diet: We are advised to take more whole grains instead of just carbohydrates, more lipids and sterols in place of bad fat, and much fruits and vegetables to supply vitamins and minerals and enough proteins preferably plant sources and not animal sources. These most Nigerians do not adhere to and even those who can afford it spend their money buying the problem - causing foods. No wonder the cases of diabetes and arthritis is now very rampant even amidst adults still in their 40’s. 2. Exercise: Today people take stress for exercise, taking a walk or run from your house to the bus stop trying to beat time for work or an appointment is definitely not exercise but stress and it will tell on your health. Some others move from home into the car and then into the elevator that leads to the office. After the day’s work, back to the car and straight home. This sedentary lifestyle predisposes various illness in one’s later years. 3. Rest: WHO recommends at least 8 hours of sound rest and sleep (2 hours in the day and 6 in the night). How much rest do you get? If you do not rest, you will rest in Peace 4. Weight Management: Research has shown that obesity is linked with hypertension. Actually each kilogram increase in the body weight increases the risk of developing hypertension by 4.4% especially among individuals less than 55 years old. A weigh loss of 6.8kg or more led to a reduction of hypertension by 28% for middle aged adults and 37% for older adults. So watch you weight. Obesity has also been greatly linked with cardiovascular diseases. IGNORANCE THEY SAY IS NEVER AN EXCUSE. Equip yourself with the Information to stay healthy and strong. Don’t spend all your time acquiring wealth only to spend the wealth treating an illness. Remember eating the right diet is the cheapest way to take care of your health. Your Health is your greatest Wealth. You are as productive at work as much as your cells are healthy. |
