Governor Abdullahi Sule of Nasarawa State, yesterday disclosed that four persons, including a state lawmaker had so far died of COVID-19 in the state.


This came as Benue State Action Committee on COVID-19 has arrested three Nigeriens and nine almajirai from Bauchi and Katsina states in a stowaway bus destined for the state.

Taraba socio-cultural platform, Taraba Instrest Group, TIG, has urged perpetrators of violence in Taraba State, to drop their arms and support the peace efforts of Governor Darius Ishaku.
It also lamented that despite the peace-building measures put in place by the governor, incidents of violence still occur.

Speaking against the backdrop of the recent killing of Pastor Emmanuel Bileya and his wife, Juliana, the group in a statement by its Publicity Secretary, Comrade Yohana Silas, described perpetrators of such an act as enemies of the state.

For raping a baby that was 2 years and 9-month-old to death, a Kaduna State High Court sitting at Dogarawa Sabon Gari Zaria has convicted one Usman Shehu Bashir of Dogarawa area to death by hanging.


While delivering judgement on Wednesday, Justice Kabir Dabo said the judgement passed was under section 221 of the penal code, Kaduna state law 1999 as amended.

Barcelona cannot afford to sign Inter star Lautaro Martinez, according to former Nerazzurri striker Ivan Zamorano
Argentina international Martinez is reportedly a target for Barca and LaLiga rivals Real Madrid after scoring 18 times in 33 appearances this campaign.

Inter are rumoured to have already considered Paris Saint-Germain’s Edinson Cavani as a replacement, but Zamorano “has no doubt” Martinez will still be at San Siro next season due to the financial constraints caused by the coronavirus pandemic.

The Lagos State Government through the Office of Education Quality Assurance has designed an initiative, tagged “Read-Aloud, Lagos”, to create and stimulate the interest of school children in reading books.

The Director-General, Office of Education Quality Assurance, Mrs Abiola Seriki-Ayeni, who disclosed this at a media briefing at the weekend in Alausa, Ikeja, explained that the initiative was introduced to encourage all children, within the primary school age bracket in the state to imbibe the culture of reading as well as increase their knowledge and improve their comprehension.

Seriki-Ayeni said, “As an education quality assurance person, I was moved by the conviction that children perform better when they are led in the act of reading by someone else.
Therefore, Reading-Aloud is expected to be the most important activity for building the knowledge required for eventual success”.

She further explained that the programme was initiated to bridge the identified reading gap among school pupils, revealing that the information available to the Office shows that the time currently allocated to reading, during and after school hours, is inadequate.

Imo state House of assembly on Thursday May 21, repealed the 2007 pension act which effectively stripped ex- governors, their deputies and ex- speakers of their pensions and other entitlements.

Some lawmakers who spoke in support of the executive bill titled “A bill for a law to repeal the Imo State governors and Speakers Pension and privileges law No 5 of 2007 (as amended)”, agreed that it was necessary to do away with pensions of ex-governors and speakers, to make funds available for other developmental projects in the state.

The speaker of the house of assembly Chiji Collins who also shared his view about the bill, said that though they are the first victims of the law, the sacrifice is necessary for the development of the state.

China’s parliament said it will introduce a proposal Friday for a national security law in Hong Kong at its annual session, in a move the US warned would “highly destabilising” for the financial hub.


The announcement late Thursday was quickly decried by pro-democracy lawmakers and activists as “the end of Hong Kong”, with fears it will stoke unrest and tighten Beijing’s grip on the semi-autonomous city.


China has made clear it wants new security legislation passed after Hong Kong was rocked by seven months of massive and sometimes violent pro-democracy protests last year.

The proposal, planned for the first day of the National People’s Congress, would strengthen “enforcement mechanisms” in the financial hub, the parliament’s spokesman Zhang Yesui said.


China’s parliament considers it “necessary to improve and uphold the ‘One Country, Two Systems’ policy,” Zhang said, referring to the arrangement that has underpinned the city’s liberties and free market economy.

Article 23 of Hong Kong’s mini-constitution, the Basic Law, says the city must enact such laws to prohibit “treason, secession, sedition (and) subversion” against the Chinese government.


But the clause has never been implemented due to deeply held public fears it would curtail Hong Kong’s cherished civil rights.

339 new cases of COVID-19 were recorded in Nigeria on Thursday,

According to the Nigeria Center for Disease Control NCDC, 139 cases were recorded in Lagos, 28 in Kano, 28 in Oyo, 25 in Edo, 22 in Katsina, 18 in Kaduna, 14 in Jigawa, 13 in Yobe, 13 in Plateau, 11 in FCT, 8 in Gombe, 5 in Ogun, 4 in Bauchi, 4 in Nasarawa, 3 in Delta, 2 in Ondo, 1 in Rivers, and 1 in Adamawa State.

In total, Nigeria has recorded 7016 cases of COVID-19. 1907 patients have been discharged from various Isolation centers across the country, while 211 deaths have been recorded.

Controversial Ghanaian Pastor and founder of International God’s Way Church, Bishop Daniel Obinim is reportedly still in police custody after failing to meet his bail requirements.
The Pastor was arrested days ago for publication of false news and forgery of a document contrary to sections 208 and 159 of the Criminal and other offences Act, 1960 (Act 29) respectively.

He was subsequently arraigned before a Magistrate court in Accra and was granted a ¢100,000 bail with three sureties (one person to be justified).

Head of Public Affairs of the CID DSP Juliana Obeng however told Joy News on Wednesday May 20, that Bishop Obinim is still in their custody after failing to meet his bail requirements.

Upon perfecting his bail conditions, Bishop Obinim is expected to appear in court on June 1 while investigations into other offences leveled against him continue.

Members of COVID-19 Taskforce in Rumuigbo on Wednesday, intercepted a trailer loaded with building materials smuggling people into Rivers State.
The interception was aided by the collective effort of NYCN, Ijaw Youths and residents of the area.

Speaking at the scene, Chairman of Obio/Akpor Local Government Council, Prince Solomon Eke, called on residents of Obio/Akpor Local Government Area to remain vigilant and share information should they notice any strange movement in their neighborhood.

Further interrogation by members of the taskforce revealed that the violators claimed to have parted with N6,000 to gain entry.

They also had in their possession a fake lockdown pass to aide their entry into the LGA.

The Police in Ebonyi state says it has arrested 10 people in connection with the torture of a pastor, Okochi Chukwu Obeni.
The Pastor was publicly humiliated for a Facebook post criticizing the Afikpo North local government chairman, Hon. Ogbonnia Oko Enyim.

He was tried and punished by the Traditional Council of his Amasiri community known as the Essa and Isi Oru.
His punishment included being flogged in public. A video of the cleric being flogged went viral and led to outrage

In the video, he was stripped down to his shorts. His hands were tied behind his back, and he was mercilessly flogged. Dirty water, sand, and grass were also poured on him.
While he was being flogged in public, he was forced to recant his statement criticizing the LGA Chairman.
He ended up in the hospital following the incident and he took to Facebook to say his hand has been paralyzed as a result.

Following outcries and condemnations that greeted the incident, the Police on Wednesday, May 20, announced the arrest of Julius Amadi Nyerere and 9 others for the assault.
Police Spokesman in the state, Loveth Odah stated this in a statement.

Men of the Ogun state police command have arrested two members of a robbery syndicate, Evans Iyam and Adedayo Taiwo, pictured above, for carrying out an attack in the Ajuwon community in Ifo Local Government Area of the stateA statement released by the spokesperson of the state police command, Abimbola Oyeyemi, said the suspects were arrested while on an operation on Damsalam Street in Ajuwon on Saturday May 16.

“The suspects were arrested following a distress call received by the police at the Ajuwon Division that a three-man robbery gang had stormed the street and shot indiscriminately, thereby throwing the whole street into panic.
Oyeyemi said the police were alerted and DPO, Ajuwon Division, SP Andrew Akinseye, quickly mobilized his anti-robbery team and moved to the scene. He said the robbery suspects took to their heels on sighting the police officers. A hot chase led to the arrest of two of them while the third member of the syndicate escaped with their motorcycle.
A locally-made shotgun was recovered from the suspects. The suspects confessed to coming to the area for the robbery operation from Ishasi in Lagos State.

The police spokesperson said the suspects will be charged to court when an investigation into the incident has been concluded..

A Chinese man who was kidnapped 32 years ago when he was a toddler, reunited with his parents on Monday, May 18, thanks to facial recognition technology.

He was a toddler when he was abducted from a hotel and sold to a childless couple.
Mao Yin was just 2 when he was abducted on the way home from nursery school after his father briefly looked away while getting him some water in a hotel in the Chinese city of Xi'an, according to Chinese state-broadcaster CCTV.
He was then sold to a childless couple in a neighboring province.

After the boy was taken, the parents dedicated their lives to finding him, with his biological mother Li Jingzhi quitting her job to search for him full time.

She posted more than 100,000 flyers around 10 provinces and became a frequent guest on television shows -- including "The X-Factor" -- asking for help in finding Mao.
Mao had seen his biological mother on the television shows, but had no idea he was the one being searched for by the family for over 3 decades.

In late April, Xi'an police received a tip about a man who had bought a baby in the 1980s, according to news agency Xinhua.
Investigators used facial recognition technology to analyze an old photo of Mao as a boy and came up with a simulated image of what he might look like today. They compared the photo to the ones in a national database and were able to track down a man living in the city of Mianyang and going by the name of Gu Ningning.
A DNA test proved Gu was actually Mao who had been kidnapped all those years ago.

Police later said a childless couple had paid the equivalent of $840 in today's money for Mao at the time of his kidnapping.
Jingzhi was told authorities had tracked down her long-lost son on Mother's Day.
"This is the best gift I have ever got," she said, according to BBC.
