World Population Day: Obaseki Urges Global Action To Ensure Devt Surpasses Population Growth

The Governor of Edo State, Mr. Godwin Obaseki, has called on world leaders to take decisive action to ensure development efforts meet and surpass the pace of population growth, to reduce inequality and engender inclusive growth across the world.

Obaseki, who said this in commemoration of the World Population Day, marked every July 11, noted that growing population shouldn’t be seen as a curse, but a challenge for developing countries to articulate innovative pathways that will drive inclusive and sustainable development.

According to him, “The World Population Day reminds us of the need to be circumspect in a number of policy issues, especially as it affects population growth and its implications for economic development and social cohesion. On a day like this, it is imperative to make the case for planned parenthood and family planning so as to ensure that the world’s population doesn’t become untameable.

Noting that this year's theme for the day, Family Planning is Human Right, makes it imperative for families to determine the size and spacing of their children, he said it behoves government to provide structures for individuals to dream and actualise their dreams.

“Due to its economic implications, growing population has been a double blessing for developing countries, such that many are still grappling to articulate policies to manage the growth and the attendant socio-political as well as economic fallouts of a bulging population.

“However, we cannot wish away the import of human life. Hence, even as the debate and policy actions are tweaked to contain population growth, governments and world leaders should take critical actions to ensure that development meets needs of people, in such a way that they would be assured of support structures to carve out their destinies and live happy, fulfilled lives.”

The governor said that the state government has undertaken a number of development initiatives to help in delivery of affordable, accessible healthcare, quality basic education and expand the space for wealth creation so as to deepen inclusive growth and development.

He added that the state government will not relent in its efforts in industrialising the state, attracting investments to open up new vistas for economic expansion and deepen reforms to ensure that people have opportunities to express themselves and earn decent wages.

In a statement, the governor said the deaths are regrettable and a loss to the country, wishing the survivors quick recovery.

According to him, “the tanker fire incident is indeed a grave tragedy. The deaths are regrettable and one can only imagine the trauma the survivors are going through. I pray that God gives the families of the victims the fortitude to bear the loss. To the survivors of the resultant inferno, I wish them quick recovery.”

The governor said that the incident once again reminds of the need to seek alternative and safer means for transporting petroleum products, as well as, a rigorous scrutiny of the activities of tanker drivers.
Noting that Nigerians should always be safety cautious to avoid casualties in such incidents, he said, “The incident calls to question the safety measures put in place to transport such inflammable products.

“It is on record that different state governments have sought means for safe transportation of these products but with the recurrence of tragedies like this, it is imperative to have a more holistic dialogue on safer means of transporting petroleum products so that such regrettable accidents do not reoccur.”

He called for a multi-stakeholder engagement to address the lingering issues and hailed the well-meaning Nigerians and emergency services that came to the rescue of those trapped in the inferno while it lasted.

Politics › Edo State Govt. Not Ceding Any Land For Ranching – Obaseki by Osabass(op): 4:42pm On Jun 29, 2018
Edo State government has said that it has not ceded land, in any part of the state to anyone, for ranching project.

Governor Godwin Obaseki made the clarification in a statement issued on Friday in Benin City, the state capital.

According to Obaseki, “The Edo State Government wishes to clarify that it has not ceded any land, in any part of the state, for ranching project to anyone.”
He explained: “my administration recognises that animal husbandry is a form of business which is done by private individuals, and the state government does not, as a matter of policy, directly engage in business.”

The governor reiterated that under his watch “the Edo State Government will remain an enabler of businesses through policies, incentives and laws and will continue to play this role to attract private investments that will create jobs for our teeming population.”

He however noted that “private individuals and groups that have submitted proposals to get involved in animal husbandry, will receive the support of the federal government through the Edo State government for the success of their businesses.”

The governor enjoined Edo people to ignore effort by some individuals to give political colouration to every government policy.

Obaseki Banks On Technology, Synergy With Private Sector To Drive Agribusiness Investment In Edo

The Edo State Governor, Mr. Godwin Obaseki, has said that the state government will drive agribusiness investments in the state with the deployment of new technologies and strong participation of private investors.

Obaseki said this in a chat with journalists after a meeting with the Director General (DG) of the International Institute of Tropical Agriculture (IITA), Dr. Nteranya Sanginga, on the sidelines of the International Workshop Water-Energy-Food Systems in Sub-Sahara, held at the IITA campus in Ibadan, Oyo State.

He said, “The most important of the challenges is trying to reenact and reestablish the culture of agriculture, to take out the drudgery of the past and bring in science and technology. We want to look at agriculture as a business with its value chain. People don’t grow crops for its own sake, it is because it has several uses aside food, such as agro-processing and as industrial goods.

“As a governor, I am here to see how I can explore opportunities with the institute, which we are very proud of. In the last 50 years, they have been helping us to understand the crops we grow in the tropics. We are also here to see how we can go into partnerships and work on specific projects.

Noting that the state is paving the way for private investors to contribute in deepening investment in agribusiness, he said, “In Edo State, for instance, we have shut down all the colleges of agriculture and are restarting them with new curriculum. We are getting the private sector to get involved, even in those schools, to train the required manpower.”

According to him, “For us as politicians and as a government, I campaigned and promised that I was going to enhance the well being of my people and that I was going to create jobs. That is from a political perspective, I made a promise and I have to deliver. There are a number of things I need to do to deliver the result. The first thing is to identify the issues, challenges and problems. But more importantly, you have to get and mobilise resources to make that happen.

He restated that Edo State is one of the foremost agricultural states in Nigeria, as it has some of the biggest investments in oil palm and rubber plantations in the country, assuring that he was intent on returning the state to its glorious days as an agribusiness hub.

He said, “Don’t forget that before oil became a fad, we were firstly an agrarian country. Edo State was the largest producer of oil palm and therefore we had the oil palm research institute. We were also a major producer of rubber. When I mean producer, I mean global producer of things like rubber, so we had a rubber research institute 60 years ago in Benin. So, we have had a culture of agriculture and agribusiness.”

Obaseki Lauds Resilience Of Small, Medium Businesses, Pledges More Institutional Support

…says entrepreneurship education, access to finance essential to success

The Edo State Governor, Mr. Godwin Obaseki, has lauded the resilience of men and women across the world, who have continued to champion micro, small and medium enterprises despite poor access to finance, entrepreneurship education and other forms of support.

Obaseki gave the commendation on the occasion of the International Day for Micro, Small and Medium-sized Enterprises, celebrated on June 27.

According to the governor, “Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises (MSMES) are major arteries of economic growth that deserve the support of world leaders and development partners.

“MSMEs occupy a strategic position in our wealth creation efforts, especially in developing countries as they have continued to pull millions of people out of poverty through job creation and the provision of goods and services to communities, far flung from major cities hosting large scale companies.”

He noted that “the decision to create a separate ministry for Cooperatives, Employment and Wealth Creation in Edo State, was informed by his administration’s conviction that MSMEs need a special government agency to address their peculiar challenges, such as registration and formalisation, entrepreneurship education, access to finance, location, amongst others.”

The governor said that the goal of his administration is to grow the MSME sector alongside his commitment to attract big ticket investments, to be sited in the Benin Industrial Park, the Benin River Port project in Gelegele, the car assembly plant and the 1800 housing-unit Emotan Garden project amongst others.

Obaseki explained that “the several innovation hubs planned for the state will graduate tech entrepreneurs of the state government’s support to scale up their operations and compete on the global tech space.”

The United Nations described MSMEs as “the backbone of most economies worldwide and play a key role in developing countries.”

Using data from the International Council for Small Business (ICSB), the UN said that formal and informal Micro, Small and Medium-sized Enterprises (MSMEs) make up over 90% of all firms and account on average for 60-70% of total employment and 50% of GDP.

“Micro, small and medium enterprises are the first responders to societal needs. These types of enterprises are responsible for significant employment and income generation opportunities across the world and have been identified as a major driver of poverty alleviation and development.

“MSMEs tend to employ a larger share of the vulnerable sectors of the workforce, such as women, youth, and people from poorer households. MSMEs can even sometimes be the only source of employment in rural areas. As such, MSMEs as a group are the main income provider for the income distribution at the “base of the pyramid.

“According to the World Bank, there are 200 to 245 million formal and informal enterprises that do not have a loan or overdraft, but are in need of one, or do have a loan but still find access to finance as a constraint. More than 90 percent are MSMEs,” the UN said.

Indiscriminate Waste Disposal: Edo Govt. Intensifies Campaign In Markets, Urges Support For 'Keep Edo Clean' Project

The Edo State Waste Management Board on Tuesday held a mega rally across major markets and roads in Benin metropolis to raise awareness among residents on the need to stop the indiscriminate dumping of waste in the state, while mobilising support for the ‘Keep Edo Clean Project’ of the Godwin Obaseki-led administration.

Speaking at Oba Market, the General Manager (GM) of the board, Mr. Charles Imariagbe, advised traders to shun the habit of dumping refuse in drains and disposing waste around the market.

He explained that the the sensitisation rally became necessary in order to promote a new culture among residents to imbibe the culture of cleanliness and embrace the use of government accredited waste managers for proper waste disposal.

He said the Obaseki administration is in a hurry to make Edo State one of the cleanest states in the country, and urged traders in the market to key into the initiative.

"The Edo State Waste Management Board is carrying out this rally in collaboration with local government officials and members of the civil society as well as International Federation of Women Lawyers.

"We want people to report defaulters to the board so that legal actions will be taken against them to serve as deterrent to would-be offenders,” Imariagbe said.

He disclosed that a sanitation task force has been created to prosecute offenders, urging the traders and road users to be law abiding.

The sensitisation team went through King Square, Oba Market, Uselu-Lagos Road, Edaiken Market, New Benin Market and Aduwawa Market in the state capital.

The GM also called on members of the public to report waste managers who fail in their duties to the board.

Deputy Coordinator General of Edo Civil Society Organisation, Annie Umoru, commended the state government’s initiative and urged all stakeholders to support the ‘Edo Clean Project.’

"We are adding our voice to that of the Edo State Waste Management Board to discourage indiscriminate waste disposal in markets, roads, walk ways and motor parks,” he said.

Traders at the various markets visited, appealed to the waste management board to ensure speedy evacuation of waste generated in the markets and apprehend people who dump refuse in markets.

Int’l Day against Drug Abuse: Obaseki Harps On Awareness Creation, Stiffer Regulation To Check Abuse

Governor of Edo State, Mr. Godwin Obaseki, has urged for intensive awareness on the dangers of drug abuse as well as stiffer regulations to check the rise in illegal distribution and illicit trafficking of prescription medicine and other contraband drugs.

The governor said this on the occasion of the commemoration of the International Day against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking marked by the United Nations and its relevant organs.

The governor said that recent revelations on the high rate of abuse of prescription drugs was an indication of the deep roots of the problem, calling on stakeholders in the health sector, civil society and government to work together to address the root causes of the drug abuse.

He said the state government has been partnering with relevant Non-Governmental Organisations such as Christ Against Drug Abuse Ministry (CADAM) among others in combating the growing trend of drug abuse, a task, he said, the state government was committed to strengthening and providing support to ensure that more of those affected are catered for.

Noting that this year’s theme of the commemoration Listen First - Listening to children and youth is the first step to help them grow healthy and safe, was apt, he said “Much as we support these initiatives, I want to urge parents, guardians and other persons in positions of authority to see to it that youth learn the dangers of drug abuse. We are building an assured future for youth in Edo state, and would want that these youths are in stable condition to benefit from the massive industrialisation initiatives we are pursuing.”

He said the state government’s industrialisation drive is also targeted at ensuring that youths are gainfully engaged so that they would not be exposed to the vices of drugs and illicit trafficking of prescription medicine.

According to the United Nations, “By resolution 42/112 of 7 December 1987, the General Assembly decided to observe 26 June as the International Day against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking as an expression of its determination to strengthen action and cooperation to achieve the goal of an international society free of drug abuse.

Supported each year by individuals, communities and various organisations all over the world, this global observance aims to raise awareness of the major problem that illicit drugs represent to society.”

Members of the Edo State Private Property Protection Taskforce have nabbed and handed over Efosa Omoruyi alias Egbowo of Evbuodia Community in Iyekogba, Benin City, to security agents.

Vice Chairman of the taskforce, Chief Osaro Idah, who spoke to journalists in Government House, Benin City, said Omoruyi was arrested for disobeying the extant laws that abolished the activities of Community Development Associations (CDAs) in the state.

“We have issued him several warnings, we asked him to desist from the act but he has been obstinate," Chief Idah said.

"Today we got him and we have handed him over to the law enforcement agents, to take action and arraign him in court” he added.

He explained that Omoruyi with other members of his group have destroyed property belonging to several petitioners in the community.

"He has been hiding from security agents since January, until his arrest."

The taskforce which was set up by Governor Godwin Obaseki, last year, to restore sanity in land transactions and administration across the state, has made it possible for land owners to develop their property without the age-old harassment by youth groups.

World Refugee Day: Obaseki Harps On Global Action, Synergy To Curb Refugee Crisis

Edo State Governor, Mr. Godwin Obaseki, has called on global leaders to join hands in building structures to provide support for people forced to flee from crisis and other forms of social and economic issues that cause dislocation from homes.

The governor, who said this on the occasion of the commemoration of the World Refugee Day, marked every June 20, by the United Nations and its various organs, stressed that support should be provided for refugees so that they don’t succumb to the harsh conditions of forced resettlements, such as malnutrition, poverty and all forms of rights’ abuse.

The governor said the rising cases of refugees within Nigeria and across the world is an indication of the need for governments to strengthen institutions to protect and provide for conditions necessary for inclusive development.

He noted, “On this day, we are reminded of the need to shun ideas, practices and agendas that promote strife, violence and crisis, all of which are conditions that force people out of their natural settlement and seek refuge elsewhere.

“In Nigeria, we have had to contend with the issues of Internally Displaced Persons as a result of the insurgency in the Northeast. The imperative to continue to support our fellow countrymen cannot be over-emphasized and in Edo State, we have extended a hand of support to the IDPs in the various camps built in the state to shelter them and we will continue to make provision for them.”

He stressed that while the challenge of refugees cannot be wished away as a result of ongoing conflict in different parts of the world, he called on world leaders to strengthen their support for initiatives that provide succor to affected persons, fortify multilateral coalition and deploy resources to ensure that refugees’ rights are protected and that they get to live decent lives regardless of their current circumstance.

“We acknowledge that this issue strikes home as many of our sons and daughters who were deceived and trafficked may have fallen to the unfortunate fate that now make them refugees in other countries. In the last few months, we have worked to reintegrate them into society. We will continue to do this as we strengthen institutions to stem the rise of the menace,” he added.

Sickle Cell Day: Obaseki Harps On Sensitisation, Urges Speedy Deployment Of Improved Disease Management Options

Edo State Governor, Mr. Godwin Obaseki, has called for increased sensitisation on the choices that lead to the increased cases of sickle cell incidence in society, noting that his government would continue to support sufferers of the health condition by creating the right environment for management of the genetic disease.

The Governor said this in commemoration of the World Sickle Cell Day, noting that advancement in science has brought hope to sufferers of the diseases even as efforts need to be harmonised in deploying new techniques of treatments.

He said the state government is revamping the primary healthcare sector to address challenges in the sector.

According to him, “On this day, we stand with sufferers of the disease and urge them to keep on the good fight against whatever limitations the disease may have foisted on them. The commemoration gives opportunity for reflection on incidences of sickle cell, and reminds us of the work to be done to ensure that more people are not exposed to the trauma that parents or children go through in managing the disease.

He maintained that there was need for increased sensitisation to stem the rise in cases of sickle cell, “It is pertinent to stress that the incidence of sickle cell disease can be checked if more people are aware of the implications of marrying people with genetic make-up that can cause their offsprings to become carriers of the sickle cell genes. Much as it is a matter of the heart, intending couples should be properly guided.”

He added that while advances in science may have made management of the disease less cumbersome, with increased prospects of sufferers for longer, healthier lives, civil society groups and other stakeholders need to work together to curb the increased cases of the illness, and provide support for sufferers.

According to the United Nations, “Sickle Cell Disease (SCD) is the most frequent genetic disease worldwide. It is present on four continents: in sub-Saharan Africa and in the Maghreb, in Asia (Middle-East, Arabic peninsula, India), in the Americas, on the North (USA), centre (Guatemala, Caribbean islands), and on the South (Brazil, Surinam, Guiana), in Southern Europe (Southern Italy and Sicily, Greece, Turkey). It is estimated that 500.000 people are born every year with this severe and invalidating condition and that 50 per cent of them will die before the age of five.”
