Edo Guber: Okpebholo Defects to PDP, Mobilizes For Ighodalo


Ahead of the September 21 Edo State governorship election, a top politician from Edo Central Senatorial District, Mr. Patsbolo Okpebholo has declared support for the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) governorship candidate, Dr. Asue Ighodalo.

Okpebholo, a popular grassroots mobilizer, who has since pitched tent with the PDP, explained that his support for Dr. Ighodalo followed his recent resignation from the Labour Party (LP).

He said that he quit LP over alleged sell out by the leadership of the party at both national and state levels during the just concluded primary of the party which saw the emergence of former Nigerian Bar Association (NBA) President, Mr. Olumide Akpata, a Benin from Edo South, as its flag bearer in the September 21 election.


He particularly frowned at the flagrant mortgage of the governorship ambition of Esan people to the highest bidder, a move he condemned as lacking dignity and focus.

Okpebholo who spoke in a telephone interview maintained that he was moving his teeming supporters and followers across the five local government areas that make up the senatorial district to the PDP to support Dr Ighodalo’s candidature.

He said: “As it stands, only the PDP has shown genuine commitment to ensure Esan people have a shot at the seat of power in the state.

“And I am going to be pulling out my resources and political structure within the five local government areas in Edo Central to work for the PDP and ensure Asue Ighodalo wins the coming gubernatorial election.”

Obaseki takes steps to tackle price hike in Edo, meets market, trade unions, other Stakeholders

The Edo State Governor, Mr. Godwin Obaseki, is taking steps to combat the current hike in food prices in the State, urging for the collaboration and support of all stakeholders to proffer lasting solutions to the incessant price surge and guarantee better welfare for the people of the State.

Obaseki met with relevant stakeholders including market associations, traders, and farmers’ unions, among others, at the Urhokpota Hall, in Benin City, to chart actionable measures to address the rising cost of living, particularly food prices in the State.

He said, “I called this meeting because of the cost of living in Nigeria as things are hard, especially the prices of food. The people can't eat anymore and as an administration, we can't just keep quiet but to act.”

Obaseki continued: “We have called this meeting to see how to solve this problem as trading blames will not lead to any solution to the serious challenges we are facing. All problems have solutions, and we are here to discuss and see how to solve this high price hike challenges facing us.

“You said trade unions are people fixing prices, but I don’t know how they work to achieve that in the market. I want to know how they fix prices. I thought it was demand and supply that controlled the prices.

“If we say unions are the problem then we must look at the unions and their activities and how to control them. We must set up a committee to check and look at the activities that lead to price hike. The committee will help us know if they are doing anything against the law.”

Obaseki noted, “This meeting shows that bad road has a role to play in price increment in our markets. I have been begging the Federal Government to help repair and fix the Ekpoma/Auchi Road since when Babatunde Fashola was Minister for Works but no results till now. I appeal to them to ensure contractors complete the road which has been on for over 30 years. I have approached Dangote and BUA to support us in doing the bad portion of the road because their trucks ply that route.”

Speaking on the measures put in place to address the hike in food prices, the Governor stated that his administration will support farmers to expedite efforts towards increased local production of food crops in the State.

The governor also promised to ensure adequate security for farmers to enable them to continue with their farming activities, while also reassuring the farmers that the government will fix their tractors and send them to their various local government councils to help them prepare for the 2024 farming seasons.

Earlier, Solomon Idiogbe, representative of the Edo Civil Society Organization appealed to the governor to help check the activities of Unions across various markets in the State as they significantly contribute to the rising cost of goods and services in Edo.

Also, Edo State Market Women Association leader, Madam Blackky Ogiamien, commended the Governor for his administration’s commitment to the welfare of Edo citizens, particularly in the area of security.

Labour Party Elects Anderson As Gov Candidate, Rejects Akpata

In a significant turn of events, the Lamidi Apapa-led Labour Party has chosen Uwadiae Asemota Anderson, a seasoned lawyer and Managing Partner of Neplus Ultra, as its gubernatorial candidate for Edo state.


The decision was made during the party primaries held at the Golden Tulip Hotel Etete, GRA Benin City, Edo state.

Anderson secured a resounding affirmation with 188 votes, showcasing strong support within the party.

The primaries were conducted by Chief Electoral Officer, Comrade Roland Daramola, and the Secretary of the electoral committee, Bishop Favour Reuben.

However, a twist occurred as another candidate, Olumide Akpata, emerged from the Julius Abire-led Labour Party, declaring victory with 316 votes in a separate exercise held in Benin City. This conflicting outcome led to a heated dispute within the party.


National Publicity Secretary, Comrade Abayomi Arabambi, expressed dissatisfaction, denouncing Akpata’s candidacy as “ultra vires, non and void,” citing legal judgments from the Federal High Court in Owerri, the Court of Appeal in Owerri, and the Supreme Court in Abuja.

Arabambi questioned Akpata’s legitimacy and alleged ties to the PDP, emphasizing the party’s commitment to upholding court rulings.

The controversy further intensified as PLATFORM TIMES obtained court documents affirming the restraint of Abure, the candidate from the Abire-led faction.

A Federal High Court in Imo state, the Court of Appeal in Owerri, and the Supreme Court all upheld the decision that Alhaji Lamidi Apapa remains the acting chairman of the Labour Party.


Amidst these legal battles, Uwadiae Asemota Anderson stands as the undisputed candidate for the Lamidi Apapa-led faction, emphasizing stability and adherence to legal norms.

Anderson, a graduate of Ambrose Alli University, has an impressive legal background, having handled numerous election petition cases and civil matters.

The Edo State Governor, His Excellency, Mr. Godwin Obaseki, in response to the rising cost of living, particularly food prices across the country, held a meeting with relevant stakeholders in the State at the Urokpota Hall, Benin City, on Tuesday, February 20, 2024, to find lasting solutions to the food crisis and chart actionable measures to guarantee better livelihoods for the people of the State.

At the forum which had relevant stakeholders, including market associations, traders and farmers’ associations, the Arewa group, among others, Governor Obaseki emphasized the urgency of the situation, reiterating the need for collaborative efforts to address the challenge, in line with his government’s Making Edo Great Again Agenda.

Key decisions and resolutions reached at the meeting include:

-The Ministry of Agriculture and Chairmen of local government councils in the State were mandated to collaborate and make arrangements for land preparation for farmers in the next six weeks before the rains start.

-The governor assured relentless support for only genuine farmers within the State, while urging them to prepare for the planting season

-The Governor directed market associations across the eighteen local government areas to liaise with the Ministry of Agriculture to identify real farmers whom they patronize

-The governor advised cattle rearers to apply for land within Edo State to facilitate the breeding of cattle locally, thereby reducing the expenses associated with transportation from the North. This he said will significantly reduce the cost of meat and other protein in the State

-The government pledged to guarantee adequate security for farmers across the State, and urged the farmers to promptly report any security challenges hindering access to farms in their various communities.

-The government also pledged support for export cluster farmers and their various associations, and ensure adequate funding for their programmes and activities

-The government promised to set up a dedicated office for the export cluster farmers’ associations in the Ministry of Agriculture to ensure prompt response and assistance

-A follow-up meeting was however scheduled for next week with all the manufacturers in Edo State to hear from the manufacturers and explore avenues for collaboration

The elated stakeholders expressed commendation for Governor Obaseki's proactive approach to addressing the food crisis, while acknowledging the severity of the situation and the need for concerted efforts

The stakeholders reaffirmed their commitment to working with the government to mitigate the adverse effects of the rising food prices and ensure food security in the State.

Former Chairman of Sterling Bank Plc, Dr. Asue Ighodalo, has emerged as the governorship candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) for the September 2024 Edo State Governorship election.

Ighodalo polled 577 of the 585 accredited votes, defeating 10 other aspirants to clinch the party’s ticket at the keenly contested primary which took place at the Samuel Ogbemudia Stadium, Benin City, the Edo State capital.

While the State’s Deputy Governor, Philip Shaibu polled one vote, another top contender, Anselm Ojezua scored zero votes.

Meanwhile, the immediate past House of Representatives member, representing Oredo Federal Constituency, Hon. Omoregie Ogbeide-Ihama stepped down from the race, while his other counterpart, a former House of Representative member representing Ovia Federal constituency, Omosede Igbinedion also stepped down from the race, declaring her support for Asue Ighodalo.

Other aspirants including Felix Akhabue, Martin Uhomoibhi, Hadizat Umoru, Dr. Earl Onaiwu and Arthur Esene also polled zero votes. The election also recorded six void votes.

Ighodalo was declared winner of the primary election by the Chairman of the Edo PDP Primary Electoral Committee and Governor of Zamfara State, Dauda Lawal, and the Co-Chairman and Governor of Delta State, Sheriff Oborevwhori.

According to Lawal, “By the powers vested in me by the National Working Committee (NWC) of the PDP, pursuant to the Constitution of our great party, the PDP, as the Chief Returning Officer of the 2024 Edo PDP Primary Election, I hereby declare Asue Ighodalo as the winner of the just concluded primary election with a total vote of 577.

“Therefore, I hereby return the elected as the PDP candidate for the forthcoming governorship election in the State.”

Ighodalo, while commending the delegates, leaders and members of the PDP for the confidence reposed in him, promised to, if elected the State’s next helmsman, work with all stakeholders to transform the fortunes of Edo people and lead the State on the path of prosperity and greatness.

He said, “I thank the good people of Edo State. Resilient people; brilliant, hard working, visionary, focused, and willing to move our state into prosperity.

“I am only a tool in this process and I promise you all that I will be a useful tool in this process. Edo State by God’s grace will move from where Governor Godwin Obaseki has carried us to, to the next level.”

He further noted, “I would like to thank Governor Obaseki for the wonderful work he has done in the last seven and a half years. I know that in a year or two people will keep talking about Obaseki. We all haven't seen the value of the work he has done but he is like a builder who is building the foundation for a 100-storey building. I thank him and his wife for supporting him tremendously and giving him the strength to go through the vicissitudes of the last seven years. No man is perfect so we all will repair and work on each other's mistakes.

“I promise all the good people of Edo State; those in Edo State, in Nigeria, and in the Diaspora that I will work tirelessly for our State. I will assemble our best hands to move our State to the next level and I promise you all that I will give you my all.”

Reiterating the need for a united party to win the forthcoming guber elections in the State, Ighodalo said it is only with a formidable and united front that the PDP can excel and succeed in the mission of retaining its seat at Osadebe Avenue and consolidating on the impactful work the party has started in the State.

Earlier, the host Governor, Mr. Godwin Obaseki, while welcoming guests at the primary election, said, “Today, we are going through an exercise that has been stipulated by our party. Even though it's statutory, the exercise will be life-changing because Nigeria is going through difficult times and we can only overcome the challenges we are facing as a Country with the right leadership.

“If we in Edo do not begin to show the right leadership that will begin to reset Nigeria, God forbid, we may all be in trouble. PDP is the only party that has what it takes to rule this Country. Again, we are showing the example in the way we are conducting our leadership selection process.”

He added, “We are following our rules very assiduously; my role as a host governor is to welcome all of you who are here, starting with our members who elected the delegates that are carrying out this exercise today. Thanks to members of the State and National Working Committee of our great party, the PDP for being steadfast in the rules. I also thank all the aspirants for exercising the spirits of sportsmanship.”

GUIDELINES FOR ASPIRANTS AND DELEGATES FOR THE EDO PDP PRIMARY ELECTION ON THURSDAY, FEBRUARY 22, 2024 AT THE SAMUEL OGBEMUDIA STADIUM, BENIN CITY

1. Delegates are to report at Edo Hotel Marque, GRA, Benin City, where their accreditation will kick off at 8am prompt

2. Each delegate will be given security access cards upon accreditation

3. Delegates shall be conveyed in dedicated buses to the venue of the primaries

4. Only designated buses carrying accredited delegates shall be allowed into the premises of the primary (Samuel Ogbemudia Stadium)

5. No private vehicle whatsoever shall be allowed into the venue

6. All vehicles conveying governorship aspirants will drop them and their guests off at the gate before departing

7. Delegates shall be seated in Samuel Ogbemudia Stadium, venue of the primary, local government by local government

8. Each Governorship aspirant should collect two security tags from the Edo PDP Secretariat, 59, Airport Road, Benin City. Each card admits one guest only

9. Accreditation of journalists and Civil Society Organizations will also be at the Marque

10.Only accredited pressmen and media outfits will be allowed into the venue

11. Only delegates, invited guests and aspirants will be allowed into the venue

Goods that are elastic in nature are affected by change in price.Hence, they have close substitutes or alternatives.This can be applicable to other political parties.But goods that are perfectly In-elastic in nature have- a-near no close substitutes and are not affected by price. Increase or decrease in price doesn't change the demand of the commodity.There is one stand alone Personality in PDP.He is professionally vast, academically grounded, intuitively faceted, pensively articulated, physically and mentally balanced.His name rings a bell; He has being causing alot of traffics in the political landscape, different handles like X, Instagram,TikTok, YouTube, Nairaland, Facebook,Television and Radio stations.His humongous tours to various political stakeholders and non- state actors have been overwhelming.

PDP as a ruling party should not be bamboozled or cajoled by APC Political subtle antics on their direct primary election.

We should not be confounded by the current APC derelicts and feel too entitled or relaxed; the ruling party should be more clairvoyant, and be well informed as nothing good comes easily.

Political sheol was let loose on Saturday, February 17, 2024, a day the All Progressive Congress Party, APC, fixed for its Primary ahead of the September 21, 2024 Gubernatorial Election in Edo State.

APC primary election on the aforementioned date witnessed an absolute ambivalent and eccentric state of higgledy-piggledy, that resulted to tripartite governorship aspirants by dissonance electoral processes, precipitated by confusion, disorderliness,rowdiness, chaos,wanton random manners.

This was after several hours of hop and puff by the Party to determine who would become the standard-
bearer in the forthcoming gubernatorial election

INSITU, APC now have three Guber candidates in Edo state APC.One from each senatorial district to fly the party's flag.APC in the national level has become subservient to the entire Nigerians by their failed governance, resulting to high cost of living, hardship,unemployment, deficit budgeting,low per capita income affecting the circular flow of income.This can easily precipitate financial and economic national fiasco.

APC adverse political effects cannot be taken for granted by the ruling party as we need to intensify our efforts more than ever.So that we don't fall prey to their subtle political antics,as if they don't know what they are capable of doing in disguise.

This may be a ploy to wood-wink us and believe they have nothing to offer!
