By happenstance,Edo went agog as a world class business,corporate influencer declares for Governorship.Wait! who could have been the the person?

The emergence of A Legal Luminary, A Technocrat, A Philanthropist, A Financial Expert, An Investment Banker, An Astute Economist, An intuitive value oriented personality on an official political declaration or voyage of his aspiration to contest for the 2024 governorship election in the Edo State is tantamount to a Religious crusade,of a higher magnitude witnessed in the1980s,during the era of late Arch.Bishop Benson Idahosa of blessed memory,Bishop Ora Robert,Pst.W.F Kumuyi and likes,that was accompanied by mammoth crowd, teeming populace and humongous congregant.It is my humble pleasure to introduce a business guru to the political landscape and hemisphere,an identity crinkum-crankum,a personality of a kind, with unique qualities, distinctive features of a man,that was born at the time when men were men and women were won by those who deserve them.

The immediate past Chairman of Sterling Bank,Mr.Asue Ighodalo, made the declaration at a well-attended event that was held at the premises of the party secretariat on Airport Road in Benin City.

He formally declared his intention on Wednesday 17th of January, 2024 to contest the ticket from the ruling party of Edo State.As one of the substantive aspirants of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), possibly to have the candidacy, to be voted for, on the 21st of September, 2024 gubernatorial election in Edo State.

However, there was massive road logjam along Airport Road and adjourning streets in Benin City as Dr Asue Ighodalo officially declared his interest in contesting for the governorship of Edo State under the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) saying that he desires to take Edo State to a height of making it the greatest state in Nigeria.

Moreover, he has been earmarked by many close watchers of political developments in Edo State as having what it takes to win the PDP primary election in the state billed for 22 February.

The declaration made at the Airport Road state secretariat of the PDP attracted leaders of the party from the three senatorial districts of the state including former Foreign Affairs Minister, Chief Tom Ikimi who presented Ighodalo as the consensus aspirant from Edo Central Senatorial District.
The Speaker of the Edo State House of Assembly, Hon Blessing Agbebaku, his immediate predecessor and now a member of the House of Representatives, Hon Marcus Onobun, Former Speakers, Friday Itula and David Iyoha, Hon John Yakubu, Majority Leader of the House of Representatives, Charity Aiguobarueghian, Prince Joe Okojie, former deputy governor, Mike Ogiadomhe, Hon Jonson Abolagba, Henry Tenebe, among several others.

Ighodalo said “my mission will be to create an Edo where quality education is accessible to all, where hard work is rewarded and where our talented youth can turn their dreams and aspirations into reality. I believe in the promise of an Edo where every person, regardless of their start in life, can write their own story of success -if we take the right steps, together.He further, re-iterated, ''My ultimate objective is to lead a government that eliminates deprivation in all its forms and makes Edo the best place to live and work in Nigeria.Our economic policies will uplift the poor, support the hard-working men and women of this state, and encourage entrepreneurship and innovation.

The high point of the declaration was the official declaration of support for Ighodalo by all the aspirants who stepped down for Ighodalo.

Several support groups ranging from market, non-governmental associations,women associations, women support groups, youth groups, drivers and tricycle unions, labour unions, and so on were also present to witness the momentous occasion.

Security agencies, from the police to DSS, Edo State Security Network and others were on ground to forestall breakdown of law and order; medical ambulances were also on ground just in case of emergency, while EDSTMA operatives were handy to control traffic.

In conclusion, Asue Ighodalo is gaining momentum and weight in PDP political landscape, by breaking loopholes to becoming PDP choice candidacy, come February 2024.

Your aspirations in becoming the Governor of Edo State is a joke taken too far and unrealistic in the State. I am advising you as a friend to take caution and do the right thing by honourably stepping down.

How could you even think of such ambition? You must be joking. How possible could you imagine yourself being Edo Governor? Do you take the state for joke or something?

I don't blame you, you have enjoyed so much relevance and support from Governor Obaseki and you think you can just wake any day and see yourself becoming Governor. It can never happen in this state. Forget about it.

You do not possess the connection, wisdom and strength to lead Edo State. How? You? Except I don't know you. Many persons in Edo know that you have been a key player in the corruption eating deeply in Edo politics. You don't possess the integrity needed by Edo people to be their governor. That can never happen in this State. Delete that thought from you.

I can see you have made yourself the spokesman for aggrieved aspirants of the PDP for the forthcoming primaries. I don't know who is funding you but please stop doing dirty jobs. You have done it in your law firm, as commissioner and till now. Don't you retire from this? What are you seriously enjoying doing dirty jobs?

Well, it's within your right as postulated in the constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria to seek for elective positions but this right cannot work for you in Edo State. Please relax and support whoever emerges in PDP. First, I advise you to publicly step down from this aspiration and stop funding young and aspiring Edo Youth with data to promote your unrealistic expectations to becoming Governor. Use the monies to give these youth a better life and opportunity. You can't be wasting your time, energies and resources for what won't be.

Your ambition to becoming Edo PDP gubernatorial candidate for the forthcoming gubernatorial election in Edo State is "Dead on Arrival" it's like wishing a rotten dead body to come back to life which is very impossible even if 7 demons are involved.

You can't succeed in this card of destruction you are about playing just because money is floating from it. It is not very difficult for you to dump PDP Godforbid we lose this State to APC cause you are a political business man. Highest bidder politician. When the funds stops coming you start crying.

You cannot use your greed to destroy Edo PDP. I advise that you step down or watch your political career being destroyed by your greed. Stop making yourself available for dirty jobs. It's time to retire and leave the stage.

ludicrous without legal and legitimate backing.

PDP set for primary election come February 22, 2024.

What looks like a lost battle, as regards to ad-hoc delegate election became victory for sure.

An outburst of last minute petitions by 8 ‘Aggrieved Coalition’ Governorship Aspirants now called *Noble movement* failed to stop the PDP ad hoc delegate congresses that took place on Sunday, February 04, 2024 across the 192 wards across the 18 local government areas of the state to elect the three ad-hoc delegates, ahead of the primary election of the party slated for February 22,2024.

There were fears that Gov, Makinde’s sudden and abrupt resignation as Chairman of the Electoral Committee would derail the congresses on the aforementioned day; but the National Working Committee (NWC) quickly resolved the issue with the reconstitution of a new electoral committee headed by Gov.Peter Mba of Enugu State.Who happens to be the Vice chairman making the whole process valid and authentic.The absence of Gov.Makinde did not affect the process constitutionally.Hence, the congress election has a legitimate backing.

The National Organizing Secretary of the PDP, Hon.Umar Bature also responded to Gov. Makinde in a *terse* letter, dismissing Gov. Makinde’s allegations that the congresses were being improperly constituted and reminding Makinde that not only did the Party abide by the letters of the law in organizing the congresses; all aspirants will be provided with the opportunity to appeal the outcome of the process.

The actions of the Chief Dan Orbih led Aggrieved Coalition of Aspirants – Hon. Ogbeide-Ihama, Chief Anslem Ojezua, the Deputy Governor Comrade Philip Shaibu, Hon.Felix Akhabue and four others – are reminiscent of the actions taken by the same Legacy group in the lead-up to the 2023 general elections where the PDP congresses and primaries in Edo State were contested and litigated up to the Supreme Court, with Gov. Obaseki’s group eventually emerging victorious.This is a similar positive political circumnavigation tilting towards victory for the current Governor of the ruling party in Edo State.

However,the process which was observed by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) and various civil society groups was reported to be mostly peaceful across the State. .

Consequently,Edo State chapter of the PDP by this medium expresses profound gratitude to leaders of our great party, the National Working Committee, the Ward Electoral Committee and all organs of the party for their keen supervision of the electoral process that has resulted in a successful ward delegate election.

One of the members of the state PDP executive as a universal umbrella. And also the Publicity Secretary in a special committee set up to guide and give political advice to all the PDP Governorship aspirants in Edo Central Senatorial District headed by High Chief Tom Ikhimi.The Publicity Secretary of the aforementioned committee has debunked the rumour that Governor Godwin Nogheghase Obaseki has a preferred Candidate.He said, that was totally absurd,ludicrous and fallacious based on collective falsehood perpetrated by some political rabble-rousers who don't want the ruling party to make progress.

He,however,stated categorically to all the PDP Governorship aspirants present that the choice of candidacy come February 22,2024 will be based on merit and credibility and not by personal selection.

By happenstance,one of the major hurdles political parties must surmount is the senatorial districts where the parties will pick their governorship candidates from especially in the face of agitations by the Edo central senatorial district that it is their turn to produce Obaseki’s successor as the two other zones have occupied the number one seat of power.By popular opinions, while doing background checks in various market places, round-abouts,some churches,some other religious bodies,viewing centers,public vendor stands,various political/social groups both in Edo State, and diaspora, including various Edo social media groups have acknowledged a certain Governorship aspirant,but not on the prerogative of the Executive Governor of Edo State.

Even though there is no written agreement or legislation in rotating the governorship position among the three major ethnic groups, the Binis, Esan and Afemais, the sentiment among Esan people of Edo Central is very high to produce the next governor.In some divide in the state on the need for Esan to produce the next governor.This will be in the interest of equity, fairness and justice.

“To dispel deliberate misinformation being bandied by some mischievous people, we want to state that there is no ethnic sectarianism to this yearning.” FACT

Some analysts and watchers have argued that governorship tickets among political parties should be thrown open to allow competence, capacity, excellence and merit be the major determinant factors.

The above positions have also been countered by proponents of fairness, equity and justice arguing that the people of Edo Central deserve to produce the next governor because the zone forms a significant part that is made up of what is today referred to as Edo State.

Consequently, aspirants jostling for their parties’ tickets cut across the three senatorial districts with the hope that their parties find them capable as their standard bearers to wrestle power from the ruling PDP in the state.

Governor Obaseki has consistently stated in the public domain that he has no preferred candidate going into the primaries.Speaking to journalists some months ago at a stakeholders’ meeting organized by the National Working Committee, NWC of the PDP to deliberate on vital issues with all the aspirants at the party's national secretariat in Abuja, Obaseki reaffirmed his stand on neutral basis by pledging to support whoever emerges the legitimate candidate of the party. ‘’I will support whoever emerges the party’s candidate at the primaries,"

Moreover, Governor Godwin Obaseki has cleared all doubts about where he stands on the choice of the flag-bearer for the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).

He declared that he has no preferred or anointed candidate among those aspiring to succeed him as his tenure comes to an end.

According to the governor, only the party has the power to decide who becomes its flag-bearer at the gubernatorial election.


Issue Surrounding Shuaibu Candidacy

Obaseki also cleared the air on his relationship with his deputy, Philip Shaibu, who has declared interest in succeeding him.

He said their relationship is cordial.

Rumour report(s) by some die-hard political rabble-rousers; that until this time, there have been insinuations in some quarters that the governor is not backing his deputy’s ambition to succeed him.

Obaseki said: “My relationship with Shaibu is cordial.He wants to run for the office I currently occupy and I think, as a Nigerian, he has the constitutional right to run; nobody can stop him.”

He added: “But only the PDP and our members can decide who will become the flag-bearer of the party at the gubernatorial election. I’m only one of the millions of party members in Edo State.I don’t think my vote alone will determine who becomes the party’s flag bearer.”

A former Chairman of Nigeria Breweries and governorship aspirant on the platform of the Peoples’ Democratic People (PDP), Asue Ighodalo,by assertion said he would unite the party in Edo State ahead of the forthcoming governorship election.

He called on party leaders,as well as stakeholders to bury their hatchets and work for the success of the party in the state.

Ighodalo, who assured of his readiness to reposition the PDP despite the infighting.

The PDP governorship aspirant vowed to return the party to its pride of place,as a truly democratic party, saying he has the capability, character and capacity to handle and to reach out to aggrieved stakeholders.

He said: “I see the rift within the party as a challenge.Though, many people see it as a major problem.I see a positive side to it.It is an opportunity to strengthen the party and to unite members, as well as to have a stronger PDP.

“My role is to be a unifier; someone the party leaders can trust.I had the opportunity to be admitted into the homes of all PDP leaders in the State regardless of any faction they belong to. Whether faction or no faction,I know we are going to come together as a party.We will unite because that is our strength.That is the work I am here to do.The PDP is a strong party in Edo.”

According to him: “I would do my utmost best to bridge the gaps and layers of distrust.That’s my focus. I think I can put myself forward as a unifier.

Expressing his unwavering commitment to delivering good governance if given the party’s ticket.

While describing himself as a detribalized Nigerian,and bonafide Edo citizen from Ewohimi in Edo Central, Ighodalo pledged to bring his vast experience and exposure of serving as chairman on the boards of various companies to bear as governor of the state.

This is because,the political debacle is an internal affair, an internal wrangling, and needs internal remedies.

It is going to be a one-way traffic for the PDP Governorship aspirant who wants to unify all other aspirants come February 22, 2024. If the aspirants popularly know as the *Noble Movement* refuse to appear before the PDP appeal panel within stipulated date.

The entire political stakeholders and electorates should know the difference between ad-hoc delegates and gubernatorial aspirants in connection with the congress election.

It is surprising to note that the ad-hoc delegates are more powerful to challenge any form of election result malpractices if they are not satisfied with the entire process. On this regard, the gubernatorial aspirants are subservient during the congress election compare to the ad-hoc delegates.

If the congress election across 192 wards, in the 18 local government areas of the state to elect the three ad-hoc delegates, ahead of the primary election of the party come February 22 2024 was satisfactory by the aforementioned delegates and the officials of the National Working Committee.No Governorship aspirants have the right to challenge the electoral exercise or process in the court of competent jurisdiction constitutionally at this level.

Any one of the PDP Governorship aspirants who feels not satisfied with the congress election to produce 3 ad-hoc delegates in each ward should approach the PDP appeal panel of the Party to indicate their grievances within a stipulated date or time.

It is only those that contested on the congress election by producing the 3 ad-hoc delegates in each wards have the prerogative and locus to challenge the electoral exercise in the court of competent jurisdiction.Unless the Governorship aspirant can prove beyond reasonable doubt, that the delegates are not members of the political party.

It is very obvious, that some of the embattled,(if not all)
Governorship aspirants may like come for reconciliation.
