Thank God the depression didn't lead him to suicide.
If he felt the shame was becoming too unbearable for him all he should have done was to change Church and continue his personal relationship with God instead of going back to worldly life.

Personal relationship with God should not be sacrificed because of scolding from your Pastor.

I have seen top Deacons change Church because of issues concerning marrying 2 wives. They still settle down in the new Church and enjoy their Christian lives and families till old age.
