Trailblazer from Ghana who became England's first black footballer It represents a step into the unknown for many Ghana players, but facing England at Wembley pales into insignificance alongside the pioneering exploits of an ancestor whose memory will be honoured by the side of the pitch before kick-off on Tuesday night. Sunderland striker Asamoah Gyan's evocative description of England's former links with his homeland perhaps explains the heightened sense of anticipation among his countrymen as he prepares to set foot on Wembley's turf for the first time. Leading the way: Wharton played professionally in England 120 years ago If it stirs memories of a bygone age, the clock will be turned back further at around 7pm by a presentation to mark the impact over 120 years ago of the world's first black professional footballer, Arthur Wharton. Born in Ghana in 1865, when it was known as the Gold Coast, he sailed to Britain as a trainee missionary but sensed a different vocation after winning the Amateur Athletic Association's 100-yard sprint at Stamford Bridge in a world record 10 seconds. A multi-talented sportsman, football became his main interest and he was Preston's goalkeeper in the year before their unbeaten 1888-89 season. He was also understudy to the celebrated William 'Fatty' Foulke at Sheffield United, and played for Darlington. Wharton was hardly the most conventional shot stopper, as TH Smith noted in the Sheffield Telegraph & Independent on January 12, 1942. THREE THINGS YOU NEED TO KNOW ABOUT GHANA1 They're on a high, Only six years ago Ghana had plummeted to 89th in the world rankings, but they are now up to the giddy heights of 16th - just two places shy of their 2008 peak. They have won the Africa Cup of Nations four times, in 1963, 1965, 1978 and 1982. 2 They've had more coaches than Real Madrid, Since 2000, the Black Stars have had an astonishing 15 coaches - seven of them from Ghana and three from Serbia, including current boss Goran Stevanovic. He won his first competitive match in Africa on Sunday, beating Congo 3-0 in qualifying for next year's Africa Cup of Nations. 3 They had 'Pele' too, Abedi 'Pele' Ayew, to be precise. He scored 33 goals in 73 appearances - more than anyone else in the national shirt. He retired 11 years ago but Ghana fans still chant his name. so, should england be worried? England have never played Ghana but the omens are good for the hosts because they have never lost to an African country. In 16 games, England have won 11 and drawn five. 'In a match between Rotherham and Sheffield Wednesday at Olive Grove I saw Wharton jump, take hold of the crossbar, catch the ball between his legs and cause three onrushing forwards… to fall into the net. I have never seen a similar save since and I have been watching football for over 50 years.' When Wharton died in 1930, he was buried in an unmarked grave, but a campaign to recognise his achievements, led by his grand-daughter Sheila Leeson, the Football Unites Racism Divides group and the Arthur Wharton Foundation, has gathered pace. His grave now has a headstone, and the FA have marked tonight's visit of Ghana by arranging for Cyrille Regis and Brendon Batson to join Sir Trevor Brooking for a ceremony to honour his memory. They will present Mrs Leeson, Wharton's oldest living relative at 79, with a 3ft version of a statue due to be unveiled in Darlington in September. Football Unites Racism Divides spokesman Howard Holmes believes the timing is perfect. 'Racism seems to have reared its head a couple of times recently, yet this reminds people there was a black player in at the inception of professional football in this country,' he said. 'Arthur played for Preston the season before they became founding members of the Football League. It seems incredible to think he was here, as an African player in English football, over 120 years ago. 'His was a riches to rags story. His mother was a member of the Gold Coast royal family, and they paid for him not only to come to England but to be educated privately. He was supposed to train as a missionary but soon realised he was an exceptional athlete. It was unheard of to run the 100 yards in 10 seconds flat. 'You might have thought he was tailor-made to play on the wing. He would have preferred an outfield position but ended up being not only a capable goalkeeper but a brave one. 'There was no protection for keepers in those days. They were barged and buffeted, so Arthur's response was to develop the most spectacular punch of his era. He could punch the ball to the halfway line and beyond. 'He really was a character, and the fact that Sheila's daughter and grandaughter have also been invited to Wembley should make it a special occasion.'

Fabio calls up Welbeck to senior England squad in move to end Ghana interest in striker Fabio Capello has moved to end any chance of Ghana selecting striker Danny Welbeck by calling him up for the senior England squad. The 20-year-old Manchester United forward, currently on loan at Sunderland, has been courted by Ghana, the country of his parents’ birth, for the last six months. Six goals in 24 appearances for the Black Cats has encouraged his Ghanaian colleagues at the Stadium of Light - Asamoah Welbeck scored as England Under 21s beat Denmark 4-0 on Friday and was one of five players allowed to leave early to return to their club and has moved into the senior squad following the withdrawal of Tottenham's Aaron Lennon. Capello has sprung a surprise that will force the Manchester-born star to make an decision about his future. Black star attraction: Welbeck says he has no intention of switching allegiances to Ghana FIFA rules prevent any player from switching allegiances if they have made an appearance for a senior national team, meaning Welbeck will be pledging his future to England if he plays. However, Welbeck dismissed any talk of him talk he would abandon England and play for Ghana instead after scoring in the Young Lions' 4-0 win over Denmark last week. He said: 'My mum and dad are from Ghana so I am eligible (to play for them). I saw a person from the Ghana FA after a Sunderland game once in the players' lounge. 'There's been a lot of talk about it but the guy came round to see John Mensah, Asamoah Gyan and Sully Muntari. 'I spoke to him briefly after the game and that's all that happened. The other lads have been going on about it but that's all it is.' England face the Black Stars in an international friendly at Wembley tonight, with Liverpool's Andy Carroll earmarked for a start and Spurs' duo Peter Crouch and Jermain Defoe also in Capello's squad the move looks very much like the Italian covering his back in case of further mishaps. However, the experience will serve Welbeck well ahead of a likely place at this summer's European Under 21 Championships

Harry Redknapp should be next England manager, says Ghana star Sulley Muntari Sulley Muntari says Harry Redknapp should be the next England manager. While Fabio Capello has seemingly done his best to increase the pressure on himself with a series of bizarre calls to undermine his beleaguered regime, Muntari can further twist the knife on the field when Ghana tackle the Three Lions at Wembley on Tuesday. Be it a friendly, a first loss to an African nation would be another unwanted addition to the CV of Capello, who, after a World Cup which saw disharmony within the squad, is set to leave the job after Euro 2012. Muntari, who played under Redknapp at Portsmouth, said: 'Harry would get on easily as England manager. 'He could bring unity to any squad of players. He's a manager players really want to play for; he's like a father figure.'

Chelsea seal deal for Brazilian super starlet Lucas Piazon Lucas Piazon has signed a pre-contract agreement to join Chelsea in January 2012. The fee for the youngster, who Chelsea have watched for the past two years, could rise to £8million. The 17-year-old Sao Paulo starlet is rated as one of the hottest prospects in Brazil and is representing his country at the Under 17 South American Championships. Piazon has drawn comparison to Kaka because the Real Madrid star also came through at Sao Paulo before heading to Europe, but the teenager is more of an out-an-out striker than his midfield senior. The fee from Chelsea will help the Brazilian club pay for Luis Fabiano, the 30-year-old Tottenham target who snubbed a move to England to return home from Sevilla. Piazon has scored twice in three games in Ecuador, a winning goal against Venezuela and a strike in a defeat against Paraguay that broke through the net. He was the top scorer in the 2009 Under 15 South American Championship, hitting 10 goals - twice as many as his nearest rival - when Brazil finished runners-up behind Paraguay.

Sprint Releases the EVO 3D and EVO View 4G Come on, you've got to admit it, giving a 3D presentation for a 3D phone is actually quite cool. We're talking about the EVO 3D and the EVO View, the two new EVO devices from Sprint. We've actually learned that EVO stands for 'evolution' and that Sprint's got two new devices. The first device, the EVO 3D, is the successor of the Evo 4G (but sadly without a kickstand). It sports a 3D capable 4.3" qHD screen, 3D recording, dual-core smartphone, and is manufactured by HTC. One can switch between 2D and 3D on the screen which is a rather smart decision, given the fact that 3D can cause people headaches. And here's another feature--it can output 3D content to your 3D TV. The second device is the EVO View 4G, which is actually just a rebranded HTC Flyer capable of 4G. That means it's a 7" 1.5GHz single-core tablet with HTC Scrybe. Just like the Flyer, it launches with Android 2.4 skinned with HTC Sense, and it will get Honeycomb "as soon as it's ready."

VLC Media Player for Android in 1-2 Months Work is still underway on an Android version of VLC Media Player, the open source, cross-platform media player that plays just about any kind of file you throw at it, and a beta is expected within a month or two. This new time frame is pushed back quite a bit from what we'd heard in December, when it was said to be coming in a matter of weeks. In an interview with a German site on March 19, VideoLAN board member Rémi Duraffort provided some detail about why it has taken longer than expected: "Unfortunately, VLC uses some features from the libc that Bionic does not implement. For this reason we had to add workarounds to be able to compile and run VLC Media Player. It requires time as some of these workarounds are a bit complex." That's not a reference to the Droid Bionic, but to Bionic, Google's custom C compiler library for Android. The app is expected to run on Android 1.5+, but will make special use of new audio and video APIs for devices running Gingerbread or higher.
