The Speaker of the House, Mr Somtochukwu Udeze stated this in an opening remarks during a four day retreat for the leadership and members of the 8th Assembly holding at Asaba, Delta State. He noted that some are simply obsolete in a digital age which include the laws on data protection, community development, environmental regulation, on the rights of persons with disabilities plus many others are amongst those needing review and that is part of essence of seting up a committee to look into it. Mr Speaker said the retreat aims at producing specific legislative targets and empower the law makers with a roadmap on which laws they intend to review before the end of the legislative year, new bills they intend to originate from within the House, and what capacity support needed to accomplish things at the highest standard. During the retreat, two former Clark's of the Anambra State House of Assembly, Mr Pius Udo spoke on Budget Driven Oversight , Executive Pespective, Professor M. NAUTH protest: SUG disown protesting students, says mgt already addressing fees hike The Students’ Union Government (SUG) of the College of Nursing Sciences, Nnamdi Azikiwe University Teaching Hospital (NAUTH), Nnewi, has disowned students who took to protest at the school gate on Tuesday over hike in tuition fee. The students who carried placards at the school gate in Nnewi had lamented the astronomical increase in their tuition from N95,000 to N580,000. But the student's union leadership of the institution in a press release made available to journalists by the president, Comrade Chukwuelue Chisom M., said the body knew nothing of the protest and was not part of it. Chukwuelue said the body had already reached the management of the institution about the hike in tuition, and had already received a favourable answer about a roundtable discussion to facilitate adjustment, when it heard of the protest by students. A press release by the president read: "The SUG leadership formally communicated the concerns and apprehensions of students to the Management of NAUTH in order to seek clarity and possible reconsideration regarding aspects of the newly introduced fee structure. "We took the responsible steps to engage the appropriate authorities of the institution. During this engagement, the Management acknowledged the concerns presented by the Students’ Union and assured the leadership that the matter had been taken seriously. "We were informed that a panel would be constituted by the Hospital Management and the Board of the College to carefully review the issues raised regarding the fee adjustment and make appropriate recommendations. "In the interest of responsible leadership, institutional respect, and constructive dialogue, the Students’ Union Government accepted the assurances given by the management and resolved to allow the constituted panel and the appropriate administrative processes the opportunity to review the matter. "Unfortunately, before the outcome of this review process could be communicated, some students, overwhelmed by the emotional and financial implications of the development, took to protest in an attempt to express their grievances." The President said the union under his watch will remain committed to protecting the interest, welfare, academic stability and collective interest of students, while maintaining respect. She said the union under her leadership will always engage the management peacefully, responsibly and constructively, hoping to use dialogue as the most effective means of addressing issues affecting students. "Leadership, in moments such as this, requires both empathy for the concerns of students and the wisdom to pursue solutions through lawful and institutional processes," she added. She appealed to all students to remain calm, orderly, and patient as the panel constituted by the Hospital Management and the Board of the College carries out its review of the matter. The Union pledged to monitor developments closely and maintain active communication with the Management to ensure that the concerns of the student body receive the necessary attention. |
NAUTH Management Reacts to Protest Over School Fees Hike, Pledges to Resolve Disagreement Students of Nnamdi Azikiwe University Teaching Hospital (NAUTH) Nnewi, School of Nursing, on Tuesday protested what they described as astronomical hike in their tuition fees. The students had protested the increase of their tuition from N90,000 to N580,000. The increment was said to be after an internal memo reportedly issued on January 23 by O. I. Ezejiofor, CMAC/chairman of the board of NAUTH College of Nursing, announcing an upward review of the students’ school fees, citing the need to upgrade the institution. The students responded with a protest, where they carried placards at the school gate, protesting the hike. Some of the students who spoke rejected the new fees, also complaining about the cost of accomodations in the institution. But the management of the institution, has pledged to sit with the members of the board and the student union leadership to sort out all outstanding issues and ensure peace returns to the institution. The Chief Medical Director of the institution, Prof Joseph Ugonna who spoke with journalists said he was away, but has learnt of the protest. "Once I return to the institution, we will sit with members of board who proposed the new tuition and also with the student union leadership and sort things out. "As for school fees, yes, there was increment, and you know we just had a new board, and the board decided to review tuition, so as to give the students the very best. They proposed N580,000 to us (management), which we approved, but there is still room for us to take a better look at it and harmonize things. "Our fees have been very cheap, and even with the increment, we are still the lowest in fees around the South East here. So, for someone who was paying N90,000, they will protest the increment, but it is for their own good, so that we can maintain standard. "As for other complaints about cost of accomodations, I can say that the institution does not own any, there are mostly private hostels, and the arrangements are between the students and the owners," Ugboaja stated. Meanwhile, the Public Relations Officer of the institution, Mrs Chinyere Onwuka also told journalists that the leadership of the students union of the institution has dissociated its from the protest. Onwuka said: "They wrote to us, and I have the letter here. I don't know those who organized or led the protest. Meanwhile, let me tell you that the hike in fees was very moderate. "That amount includes their feeding, transportation to postings to Enugu. The hostels they talked about is a private arrangement between them and the owners." She insisted that a comparison of the school fees of the institution and those of other schools of nursing around South East showed that it remained cheap. She insisted that some other institutions paid as much as N800,000 tuition for old students, even exclusive of feeding.

Ikwegbuo, an illustrious member of the association died on Sunday night in a car crash along Otuocha-Nkwelle road in Anambra East Local Government Area of Anambra State. He was returning from a burial ceremony of father of Mr Alias Okaa Ogolo, former chairman of Umuezeanya Youth Association, when his vehicle somersaulted and crashed into road side valley. An official statement jointly signed by chairman, Secretary and PRO of Umuezeanya Youth, Chief Olisemeka Obeche, Osita Nneke and Augustine Okafor, explained that declaration of the four day mourning period from 9th-12th March, 2026 was to honour the deceased who was one of the most vibrant members of the association. "Ezebuilo Ikwegbuo, one of our most vibrant and active members tragically lost his life in a fatal motor accident over the weekend. "The incident, which occurred along the Otuocha-Nkwelle road, has plunged the association, the entire village and indeed Umuoba Anam community into deep sorrow. "We consider him as one of the key pillars of Umuezeanya youth movement. His energy and commitment to unity and progress of the association were unparalleled. The statement further disclosed that as a mark of respect, the association has suspended social activities within its platform during the four days mourning period. "We have put everything on hold till this mourning period is over, for we have lost a brother, a leader, a voice for a reason and major contributor to our progress. "Ezebuilo's death is not just a loss to his immediate family but to the entire Umuezeanya youth and village as well as Umuoba Anam kingdom," Obeche explained. While mourning their fallen comrade, the association has used this moment of grief to draw the attention of the Anambra State Government to the deplorable state of the 3-3-Nkwelle-Otuocha road. According to eyewitnesses, the accident that claimed the life of their member was caused by the poor condition of the road, specifically citing deep potholes and lack of adequate lighting, which have made the road a death trap for commuters. "We cannot continue to bury our youths on this road. The government has talked about dualising this axis, but the time for talk is over. We need action now," the association lamented. "Umuezeanya Youth Association is specifically calling on Governor Chukwuma Soludo to expedite action on the proposed dualization and rehabilitation of the 3-3-Nkwelle-Otuocha road. "While we acknowledged recent announcements regarding plans to unlock the traffic gridlock in the area, we are concerned over the slow pace of action in fixing the road. We therefore call on the Solution Governor, Prof. Chukwuma Soludo to fast-track the project to prevent further loss of lives. "We plead that this project be treated as an emergency. While we await the full dualization, we urge the state to immediately intervene with palliative measures on the worst-hit portions to make the road motorable." The association noted that the road serves as a critical economic lifeline for communities in the area, and its current state is crippling local businesses and endangering lives daily. They expressed hope that the government would heed their call and ensure that no other family experiences the pain they are currently enduring.

Empowering Women: Ikenga Abiama Foundation Advocates for Greater Leadership Roles for Igbo Women By Great. In a stirring call to action on International Women's Day, the Ikenga Abiama Dynasty Foundation of Igboland has lauded African women, particularly those from the Igbo ethnic group, for their vital role in sustainable development. The foundation's statement, delivered by Founder and Executive Director Amb. Dr. Uba Iwunwa, highlighted the significant contributions of women as architects of societal resilience, emphasizing their global impact beyond Nigeria or Africa. The foundation's message underscores that sustainability encompasses much more than environmental stewardship; it also entails economic stability, social justice, and the preservation of cultural heritage. In this light, Igbo women are taking charge, pioneering initiatives ranging from regenerative agriculture practices in the Southeast to innovative business models within local markets. Their influence is evident in various sectors, including policymaking and academia, where they drive discussions on clean energy solutions and advocate for social reforms that uplift their communities. However, Amb. Iwunwa voiced concern about the systemic marginalization of women in Africa, Nigeria, and particularly Igboland. "When the architects of our future are denied leadership positions, the very foundation of our society becomes precarious," she stated, underscoring the urgency of addressing gender disparities in decision-making roles. Queen Ugobeze added to the conversation by pointing out the pressing need for women's inclusion in leadership roles that reflect their contributions to community development and sustainability. In response, the Ikenga Abiama Foundation is calling for immediate action to rectify the growing gender imbalance, urging both government and traditional institutions to dismantle the patriarchal barriers that inhibit women's ascent into leadership. The foundation advocates for the Nigerian federal and state governments to implement legislation mandating that women occupy at least 35% of all appointed and elected positions, positioning such representation as vital for national security and effective governance. Furthermore, the foundation calls for a cultural renaissance in Igboland, promoting equal participation of women in decision-making, particularly within traditional councils. The foundation strongly demands improved economic opportunities for women, including better land tenure, access to low-interest credit, and essential digital resources, ensuring that women can effectively scale their businesses and enhance their roles in society. Amb. Iwunwa emphasized that empowering women is not just a matter of equity but a strategic imperative for a sustainable future.
