Prof. Joseph Ugboaja OON: The Visionary Reformer and Gold Standard of Professional Excellence By Ugochukwu Ifeanyi In the ever-evolving landscape of healthcare administration and medical excellence in Nigeria, few names resonate with distinction, transformational leadership, and visionary impact like Prof Joseph Ugboaja OON. As the Chief Medical Director of Nnamdi Azikiwe University Teaching Hospital, Prof. Ugboaja has not only redefined hospital management and healthcare delivery but has also positioned NAUTH as one of the fastest rising and leading tertiary health institutions in Nigeria. Since assuming office, Prof. Joseph Ugboaja OON has demonstrated extraordinary leadership capacity, administrative brilliance, and uncommon dedication to service. Through strategic planning, innovative thinking, and relentless hard work, he has transformed NAUTH from a conventional teaching hospital into a rapidly expanding center of medical excellence, innovation, research, and healthcare modernization. One of the most remarkable achievements under his administration has been the aggressive infrastructural revolution and the accelerated development of the hospital’s permanent site. What many once considered an impossible dream became a visible reality through his courage, foresight, and determination. Massive projects including modern medical complexes, upgraded emergency facilities, improved theatre equipment, road networks, drainage systems, digital healthcare infrastructure, and specialized departments have emerged under his watch, giving NAUTH a completely new identity and global outlook. Prof. Ugboaja’s administration also championed the transition from outdated analogue systems to modern digital healthcare operations through the implementation of Electronic Medical Records (EMR), improved ICT systems, and modernized hospital management structures. These reforms have significantly enhanced efficiency, patient management, service delivery, and institutional accountability. Beyond infrastructure, Prof. Ugboaja OON has remained deeply committed to human capital development and staff welfare. His leadership style inspires productivity, discipline, innovation, and professionalism among healthcare workers. He understands that excellence in healthcare delivery begins with motivated personnel, and as such, he has consistently prioritized staff development, welfare packages, training opportunities, and institutional harmony. His visionary ambition to position NAUTH among the top teaching hospitals in Nigeria is not mere rhetoric but a mission backed by strategic action plans, measurable milestones, and relentless execution. Under his stewardship, NAUTH has expanded its diagnostic and specialist capabilities, including the acquisition of advanced medical equipment such as dialysis systems, MRI facilities, orthopedic expansion projects, and specialized treatment centers. Just a week ago, Prof Ugboaja took delivery of a newly acquired 1.5 Tesla Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) system at the Radiology Department of the hospital, which was donated by the Nigeria National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC) Foundation Limited. For a man who knows where to go to get what, it was not surprising that erudite professor spotted NNPC Foundation Limited and followed up on them on the need to support the university, leading to the donation. The state of the art machine with supporting infrastructure such as radio-frequency shielding systems, chillers, backup power supply and specialised imaging accessories, also came with a one-year manufacturer’s warranty and training for radiographers, radiologists and technical personnel to ensure sustainable operations. Th CMD who spoke during the commissioning ceremony said the machine will bring world-class diagnostics to the doorstep of Nigerians, while revealing that the intervention by NNPC aligned with the 10-year strategic and development plan of the hospital; President Bola Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda as well as the All Progressives Congress (APC) government in ensuring good health for Nigerians. Prof. Ugboaja’s excellence has not gone unnoticed. He has received widespread commendation from medical associations, government institutions, healthcare stakeholders, and community leaders for his transformative leadership. The Nigerian Medical Association described him as a visionary administrator, a tireless servant leader, and “Mr. No Mission Is Impossible” due to his ability to overcome challenges and deliver unprecedented achievements within a short period. Indeed, Prof. Joseph Ugboaja OON represents the perfect fusion of intellect, competence, discipline, and visionary governance. His rise as one of Nigeria’s youngest Professors in Obstetrics and Gynaecology further underscores his academic brilliance and professional distinction. In an era where leadership is often measured by promises, Prof. Ugboaja OON has chosen to be measured by results. He has proven that transformational leadership is possible in Nigeria when vision is matched with courage, competence, and integrity. His legacy at NAUTH continues to inspire hope, confidence, and admiration not just among his peers in the medical profession, but among Nigerians who see in him a shining example of what public service should represent. Without doubt, Prof. Joseph Ugboaja OON remains a yardstick for measuring professionalism, visionary excellence, and purposeful leadership, but most importantly, a man whose footprints in Nigeria’s healthcare sector will endure for generations to come. FALSE AND MISLEADING REPORT: THE 8TH ANAMBRA ASSEMBLY DID NOT PASS ANY NEW BURIAL LAW The attention of the Anambra State House of Assembly led by the Speaker, Rt. Hon. Somtochukwu Nkem Udeze Ph.D has been drawn to a misleading publication making the rounds, particularly a sensational headline by Punch Newspapers claiming that Anambra State has introduced a “new burial law” banning the presentation of cows, goats and other condolence gifts. For the records, this publication is FALSE, misleading and a gross misrepresentation of facts. The 8th Anambra State House of Assembly did not pass any new burial law. No such bill was introduced, debated or passed by the current Assembly. The existing burial regulatory framework being mischievously referenced by some media platforms was enacted into law in 2019, long before the inauguration of the present 8th Assembly. Since the inauguration of the current House, no amendment whatsoever has been made concerning the areas sensationally reported in the media. It is therefore irresponsible and professionally unethical to attribute a non-existent “new law” to the present Assembly simply to generate traffic, controversy and public outrage. At a time when fake news and distorted headlines are becoming a serious threat to public trust and social stability, media organizations must understand that journalism is a sacred responsibility, not a tool for clickbait sensationalism. The Anambra State House of Assembly remains committed to transparent, people-oriented legislation and will continue to engage citizens openly on every law legitimately before the House. We urge Ndi Anambra and the general public to disregard the false narrative and rely only on verified legislative information from official government channels. According to him, the intervention reflects the company’s broader corporate social responsibility agenda and commitment to strengthening public institutions beyond the energy sector. Ojulari said the new MRI system would reduce the need for patients to travel long distances in search of specialised diagnostic services, lowering costs and easing the burden on families seeking medical care. The installed MRI system includes supporting infrastructure such as radio-frequency shielding systems, chillers, backup power supply and specialised imaging accessories. It also comes with a one-year manufacturer’s warranty and training for radiographers, radiologists and technical personnel to ensure sustainable operations. Arukwe said the project directly addresses gaps in healthcare access and diagnostic services identified across many underserved communities in Nigeria. Citing a 2024 Nigeria Health Watch report, she noted that more than 250,000 Nigerians die annually due to inadequate access to healthcare services. “What NNPC Limited through its Foundation has achieved today is significantly addressing these inadequacies through the MRI installation,” she said. She added that the equipment would not only improve patient care but also serve as a training platform for future medical professionals. The Joint Action Committee (JAC) of SSANU and NASU, Nnamdi Azikiwe University chapter, has suspended its ongoing strike with immediate effect. Rising from a Congress held on Monday 11th May, 2026, the unions announced the suspension following positive progress in negotiations with the Federal Government. The leadership of both unions commended members for their unwavering commitment and discipline, describing the strike which commenced on May 1, 2026, as one of the most successful in the university system in recent times. While directing members to resume duty immediately, the leadership called for sustained vigilance during the suspension period. They warned that failure by the Federal Government to honour the agreement would force the unions to embark on an indefinite, total and more devastating industrial action. *The Governor Who Never Blinks!* The determination by the Anambra State Government to finally to put a nail on the coffin of the lingering traditional stool dispute in the state capital territory is another reminder that Governor Chukwuma Soludo is a mqn who possesses the political courage and will that are rare in Nigerian governance today. This courage to confront a problem squarely, to name it without euphemism, and to act on it even when the consequences are uncertain has been lacking in our polity and the nation has been paying heavily for it. Governor Soludo is not a new comer in confronting difficult situations. He is a a reformer who doesn't just reform for comfort. His style divides opinion sharply, but results to a long-term restoration of values, instituting integrity and strengthening sytems and institutions. Disrupting crooked systems that had held the progress of the state from maximizing its full potentials seems to be something he is not ready to shy away from. It is the understanding that a society that only grow in a state of peace and that while the terms of peace can be negotiated, peace should not be bargained. Right from inception, he was definitive in stating that his administration was not interested in pageantry - cosmetics governance that only appeals to temporary solutions that wins elections but leaves the society and the state more than he met it. When he came into office in 2021, Anambra was convulsed by violence. Armed groups had effectively rendered eight local government areas inaccessible, and the weekly Monday sit-at-home order enforced by factions operating under the IPOB banner had ground commercial activity to a halt. Many governors across the South-East had tiptoed around the issue, unwilling to antagonise either the separatist movement or the federal government. Soludo chose a different path. He directly challenged the perpetrators and the culture of silence that perpetuated the violence: "It is time to interrogate both the purpose and means of your campaign." He equally turned on politicians who were exploiting the insecurity, warning them, "You are riding a tiger. The current trajectory is a road to desolation." This was a language that sought seeking to end the crisis and not cuddle it. Consequently, his handling of the five year Monday sit-at-home orders and closure of market early this years at the twilight of his first term sheds more light that this Governor never blinks. This audacious move despite polling serious criticisms has ended the economic sabotage called sit-at-home. What separates Soludo's confrontational style from mere stubbornness is the intellectual scaffolding underneath it. Before he was a governor, he was a professor of economics, a former Central Bank of Nigeria Governor who executed a landmark banking consolidation policy, a visiting scholar at Oxford, Cambridge, and Brookings, and a consultant to the World Bank and United Nations. This background shapes how he confronts crises. He does not just act - he first understand the variables and issues at stake, examines the law and looks at global predictions and impacts before taking action. Even his critics tend to acknowledge what his supporters make explicit: that Anambra under Soludo is a state being led, not managed. A governor who never blinks at the face of challenges even at a huge personal cost or any political gain. In a political culture where evasion is a survival skill, this is no small thing. David Okpokwasili, anipr, a public affairs commentator, writes from Awka, Anambra State.

SWAN Expresses Shock Over Return Of Sports To Youth Ministry The Sports Writers Association of Nigeria (SWAN) has expressed concerns over the scrapping of Anambra Sports Development Commission and return of sports to the Ministry of Youth Development and Sports. SWAN Anambra Chapter made the observation in a Statement issued on Sunday while reacting to the list of Commissioner nominees sent to the House of Assembly by Gov. Chukwuma Soludo for screening and confirmation. The Statement which was signed by Chimezie Anaso and Uche Ndeke, the chairman and Secretary respectively said SWAN had thought that the Commission which was established in 2018 would be strengthened but was shocked at its return to the ministry. “This is unexpected because it is coming at a time when sports has grown to become a full fledged sector and the Federal government and most states are correspondingly operating it as an industry “This is why there is a National Sports Commission at the Federal and Sports Development Commissions or Sports Councils in many states; very few still administer sports through the ministry. “The major worry here is that sports will now be administered as a department within the ministry and this will likely constrict growth and development,” it said. SWAN however expressed confidence that Patrick Aghamba, the Commissioner nominee for the Ministry of Youth Development and Sports to drive the sector to higher heights. The association said the reappointment of Aghamba who served as the Commissioner for Youth Empowerment in Soludo's first term and the additional responsibility as sports administrator this time around meant that he was the best man for the job. The body of sports journalists called on Gov. Soludo to provide adequate political support and funding needed to turn Anambra to its place of glory on the map of national sports. “Having expressed our concerns, what is paramount is the development of sports as entertainment, profession, business and means of economic prosperity for the society, athletes, investors and households. “What is important now is providing the right environment, building of sports infrastructure, effective grassroots development programmes, school sports, high performance centres and capacity building for coaches. “We believe the transition will not be a difficult one because there is a sports directorate which the Commissioner will inherit and build on. “As Sports Press and partners in progress, SWAN is ready as always to work with the ministry in the promotion of policies and programmes of the Soludo administration’s agenda for sports,” it said.

Solution Fun City: Where The Rich And The Poor Dance Under the Same Sky. There are moments when a single structure announces, louder than any policy speech, that something profound has shifted. The commissioning of Solution Fun City in Awka — a sprawling 12.7-hectare marvel of recreation and leisure — is one of such moments. It does not merely add to the landscape. It transforms it. Spread across more than twelve and a half hectares, Solution Fun City stands as the largest combined amusement and water park complex in southeastern Nigeria. A 38-metre Ferris wheel, roller coaster, drop tower, Olympic-sized swimming pool, water slides, indoor arcades, cinemas, virtual reality zones, bowling alleys, and a world-class country club, all under one address. It competes credibly with Hi-Impact Planet and Giwa Gardens. For the southeast, it is not a competition. It is a coronation. In a country where leisure has long been rationed by income, Solution Fun City dares to ask: what if joy had no gatekeepers? The minimum entry price is ₦400. These are not the numbers of a facility built for the elite. They are the numbers of a place that wants the market woman, the student, the civil servant, and the politician sitting side by side on the same Ferris wheel, sharing the same view of the sky. Soludo did not build a fun park. He built an argument, made in steel and water slides and cinema screens, that Anambra is open for leisure investment, and that the southeast can produce world-class infrastructure. Structured as an independent company with a professional board, Solution Fun City is designed to survive its creator, with revenues funding similar complexes across Anambra South and North. That is the mark of a leader who understands the difference between governing and building. Governing ends when your term ends. The building continues. That is Soludo's real gift to Anambra: not the facility itself, but the proof that it is possible. |

A Light In The Capital: What Light House Awka Says About Anambra's New Ambition. When Anambra was created in 1991, it inherited no purpose-built seat of government. What became the "official" government house was a prefabricated structure originally erected to house construction workers. For thirty-four years, four governors — Mbadinuju, Ngige, Obi, Obiano — each inherited the problem and left office without resolving it. Soludo arrived in 2022, named it plainly in his first budget as a thirty-one-year embarrassment, and fixed it, not with a modest renovation, but with a twenty-three-hectare mini-city of over fifty structures, first rescuing the site from severe gully erosion before laying a single foundation. President Tinubu, who commissioned it, declared: "Anambra is rising." The campus includes the Government House, Deputy Governor's Office, Executive Council Chambers, a 1,225-capacity banquet hall, amphitheatre, iconic Light of the Nation Tower, and grounds planted with thousands of trees, assessed as effectively carbon neutral. Light House Awka is the centrepiece of an administration that has built over nine hundred kilometres of roads, eight bridges, five hospitals, and recruited 8,115 teachers, all without borrowing a kobo from any commercial organisation. Beyond Anambra, it is proof that the gap between governmental promise and delivery can be closed. But a building is not governance in full. The benchmark it sets is not only architectural — it is moral. Anambra has the light. The task now is to shine it.

An Awka Magistrate court presided over by His Lorship, Mrs E.C Chukwu has ordered the forceful eviction of a single mother, Ndidi Nzelu (Nee, Enekwechi) from her father's compound at 25 Enekwechi street, Ngodo village, Nose community, in Awka South LGA of Anambra State. The court order obtained by newsmen, showed that the magistrate had on Friday, ordered Mrs Ndidi Nzelu to vacate her father's compound to a rented apartment which the brothers claimed to have rented for her within the same community. The court order read in part, "that by 6pm on Sunday the 19th of April, 2026, the Defendant/Respondent and her belongings must not be found within No: 25 Enekwechi Avenue, Nise." Speaking to journalists in tears at her hospital bed at chukwuemeka Odimegwu Ojukwu, the victim, Mrs Ndidi Nzelu cried out over what she called "judicial high handedness" which seemed to have given a mark of approval to the hatchet plan by her brothers to throw her out of the apartment given to her by their father while alive. The victim who was also involved in a ghastly auto crash on Sunday 19th April, 2026, alleged that his elder brother, chief Damian Enekwechi compromised the legal process to legitimise his evil plans to throw her out of their father's house under the guise of renovating the family compound. She lamented that all her properties and personal belongings have been thrown outside the gates of the family compound, to be damaged by the weather conditions. Reacting to the development, counsel to the Mrs Nzelu, Mr. C. J Okoli-Akirika said that his law firm which is defending the victim on Pro Bono bases had earlier filed a motion for stay of proceedings on Thursday 16th April, 2026 at the Awka Magistrate court, as the same matter and parties were before the Anambra state High Court. He further stated that the attention of the magistrates was duly brought to the pendency of the cases at High court, as well as the motion on notice to stay further proceedings on the matter, yet the court went ahead to issue an order of eviction. He concluded that the manner at which the magistrate rushed to issue such order was unfair, unjust and inequitable; mentaining that order can not withstand the test of judicial review by the higher court. Also speaking, a legal practitioner, Mr Ejiofo Umegbogu said it amounts to judicial rascality for any trial court to ignore a pending application in a matter before it and proceed to hearing, and deliver ruling the same day. Mr Umegbogu explained that by issuing such order, the court have become functus Officio and can not seat on the matter again, yet, there is a pending application that has not been determined in the case. He urged judicial officers to desist from such blanket orders that can bring them to disrepute and contempt in the eyes of the public. As the time of this report, the personal belongings and properties of Mrs Ndidi Nzelu(Enekwechi) where seen scattered outside her family compound along Enekwechi Avenue; while Mrs Ndidi Nzelu is hospitalised at the Hospital, after a major bone surgery on her leg as a result of car accident. It could be recalled that the said chief Damian Enekwechi had since January this year explored every illegal means to eject his younger sister from the family compound, which seems to have received judicial approval which some analysts have described as a jundiced and compromised court order.
