1 John Walker Created The First Trojan Horse Virus: 1975 John Walker became the first person to trick people into installing a virus on their computers two years before the first home computers went on the market. Walker may have invented a computer virus, but he insists that he meant well. He’d created a computer game called ANIMAL that tried to guess what animal the player was thinking about, and it was such a smash hit that all of his friends wanted a copy. The problem was that in 1975, the only way to share it was to write a magnetic tape and mail it to them, and Walker didn’t have time for that nonsense. So, he figured that since everyone wanted his game anyway, he’d just forcibly infect every computer possible with it. He updated his game so that while people were playing it, it would secretly make copies of itself on every directory it could find. That meant it would copy itself onto other users’ directories and onto any tape inserted into the computer. And if you took that tape and put it into a different computer, then it would get infected with Walker’s game, too. Now if anyone asked Walker for a copy of ANIMAL, he could tell them to just check their computer. Whether they knew it or not, they probably had a copy. Walker insists he did it out of the kindness of his heart. Well, that and to let people know—in his words—“what could have happened if I were not a nice guy.” So maybe he did it partly out of the kindness of his heart and partly to teach the world to fear him.

2 Steve Jobs And Steve Wozniak Got Their Start As Hackers: 1971 Before they made a fortune selling computers and iPods, Steve Jobs and Steve Wozniak got their start doing something else: hacking into phone systems. Wozniak read the Esquire article on Joybubbles and the phone phreaks, and he thought it was thrilling. He was so excited that he tracked down one of the phone phreaks mentioned in it, John “Captain Crunch” Draper, and invited him over to his house. After learning how to hack into phone systems from Captain Crunch, Wozniak sat down and built a device called a blue box, designed to make it easy to hack into phone systems. Then he started using it himself. At one point, he even pretended to be Henry Kissinger and prank-called the Pope. When he told his friend Steve Jobs about it, Jobs realized that there was money in this idea. The two started mass-producing and selling Wozniak’s blue box to their classmates, with Wozniak in charge of tech and Jobs in charge of sales. And that’s how Apple got started: with the founders of the world’s biggest companies making money off scamming phone companies.

3 Ray Tomlinson And Bob Thomas Put The First Virus On The Internet: 1971 The first person to ever send a virus over e-mail was Ray Tomlinson—also known as the guy who invented e-mail. It was called Creeper, and it was the first computer worm ever. The program would make copies of itself and spread itself across ARPANET, each copy making a little message pop up on terminals saying: “I’m the creeper: Catch me if you can.”The virus was actually created by Bob Thomas, one of Tomlinson’s colleagues, but Thomas kept it pretty innocuous. He just made the file bounce from computer to computer, always deleting itself after it disappeared from a computer. Tomlinson, though, decided to modify it so that it wouldn’t get rid of itself and, instead, would just bog down a computer until it stopped working. Nearly as soon as the Internet was invented, he’d uploaded the first virus to bring it down. So, as it turns out, when you get spam and viruses in your inbox, your e-mail account is working exactly the way the creator intended.

4 RABBITS Was Probably The First Computer Virus: 1969 The first computer virus in history may have been a program called RABBITS. Nobody knows who made it, and nobody knows why, but whoever it was brought the University of Washington Computer Center down. It was a tiny, inconspicuous program that made copies of itself—breeding, as its name suggested, like rabbits. In 1969, someone installed it onto a computer at the university and let it run. The program made two copies of itself, and then each of those copies made copies until the computer overloaded and stopped working.Five years later, somebody who’d heard the story took the idea and put it to use. He created a rabbit virus of his own (called Wabbit) and put it on APRANET, an early version of the Internet, to knock out another user. History’s first computer virus, at the moment, was used for history’s first denial of service attack.

5 MIT Phone Phreaks Were The First People Called ‘Hackers’: 1963 The first person to ever use the word “hacker” was an MIT professor named Carlton Tucker, and he didn’t mean it as a nice thing. In 1963, the school was bombarded by a group of phone phreaks. They’d broken into the school’s phone network and used it to tie up all the lines with calls to Harvard, making it impossible for anyone to make a call. Then they made a series of random long-distance calls and charged to a radar facility, mostly just to bug them. Tucker got mad and dropped a word that would change history. The word “hack” was already in use at MIT, but at the time, it just referred to working on electronics. He pulled it out on the phone phreaks, calling them “hackers” for the first time. That didn’t mean he was happy about it, though. Tucker put out a warning to every hacker at the school, saying: “If any of these people are caught they are liable to be put in jail.”

6 Allan Scherr Was The First Person To Hack A Computer Password: 1962 The first computer ever to be protected with a password was also the first to be hacked into. And, thanks to Allan Scherr, it happened a lot. MIT set up the first computer passwords in 1962. They had a handful of computers that their students had to share, and they wanted them to have a little privacy. So, they made students log into the computers with a password—and, to keep them from hogging the machines, put a daily four-hour time limit on each account. One of the students, Allan Scherr, got fed up with the time limit pretty quickly. He made a punch card that tricked the computer into printing off all the passwords and then used them to log in as other people whenever his time ran out. He shared the passwords with his friends, too, and, pretty soon, the first computer troll was born. They used the passwords to hack into their teacher’s account and leave messages making fun of him.

7 Joybubbles Was The First Person To Hack By Whistling: 1957 Condon may have been the first phone phreak, but he wasn’t the one who started the movement. That was Joe Engressia, better known as “Joybubbles.”Joybubbles was a blind genius with perfect pitch. He could perfectly imitate any note he heard, right down to tiniest changes in tone. When he was just seven years old, he figured out how to use that skill to hack into the phone company’s system. His pitch was so strong that he didn’t need any toys. He just had to purse his lips and whistle, and his phone, thinking it was a programmed signal, would connect him anywhere he wanted to go. He made a minor living off of it, charging friends $1 to hack into their phones and let them make free long-distance calls. In 1971, he turned into a minor celebrity when Esquire wrote an article on him and the phone phreak scene. The article won him a little attention and an awful lot of trouble. Joybubbles was arrested for fraud because of his hacking the same year. He claims, though, that he got arrested on purpose. Joybubbles was convinced that, if he got arrested, he could get a telecom company to hire him for security and finally put his skill to use for a little more money than $1 per phone call. |
8 David Condon Was The First Phone Phreak: 1955 In the 1960s and 1970s, there was a whole scene of people who hacked into telephone networks. They called themselves “phone phreaks,” and they’d figured out that if they played the right sound into a phone, they could connect to any part of the network. Most of them just used their trick to make free phone calls, but the possibilities were bigger than you might imagine. In fact, in the 1990s, one phone phreak managed to convince a judge that he could hack into the nuclear codes.The man who figured it out—at least, as far as anyone can tell—was David Condon. In 1955, Condon whistled his Davy Crockett Cat and Canary Bird Call Flute into his phone, testing, for the first time, a theory on how phone systems worked. The sound the whistle made was a secret code recognized by the telephone system. The system assumed he was an employee and connected him to a long-distance operator, who, thinking she was talking to a colleague, would connect him to any phone number he requested for free. Condon only used his trick to save a few pennies on long-distance phone calls, but he accidentally planted the seeds of an entire movement. The phone phreaks would eventually evolve into the first computer hackers, and the whole scene never would have existed without one man and a toy flute.

9 Rene Carmille Hacked The Nazi’s Database Of French Jews: 1940 Rene Carmille has been called the “first ethical hacker” in history, and it’s safe to say that he earned the title.[2] He was a member of the Resistance in Nazi-occupied France, and his hacking saved thousands of Jewish lives. Carmille was a punch-card computer expert who owned the machines that the Vichy government of France used to process information. When the Nazis took over, he found out they were using punch-card machines to process and track down Jews, and he volunteered to let them use his machines. Carmille wasn’t some zealous anti-Semite; he had a plan. He hacked his own computers so that no matter what the Nazis put on somebody’s file, they never actually labeled anyone as Jewish.He managed to convince the Nazis that he didn’t know why the machines weren’t working for a good two years. When they figured out what he’d done, though, they made Carmille suffer. In 1944, the Nazis broke down his door and sent him to the brutal Dachau concentration camp. Carmille’s hacking got him killed, but one life was a small price to pay. By the time the Nazis caught him, he had already saved thousands of lives.

10 Nevil Maskelyne Hacked A Wireless Telegraph Demonstration: 1903 The second it became physically possible to hack into something, somebody did it. That somebody’s name was Nevil Maskleyne, history’s first hacker, and he was around a lot earlier than you might expect. He hacked into a live telegraph demonstration in 1903.Maskleyne didn’t even wait for wireless telegraphs to go on the market; he hacked into one of the first demonstrations. Its creator, Guglielmo Marconi, was putting on a presentation to show how it worked. Marconi wanted to prove to the public that his wireless telegraphs were secure and that anything they sent would be completely private.As the presentation began, though, his telegraph started tapping out a strange message. First, it just beeped out the word “Rats” over and over again. Then it started punching out a limerick. “There was a young fellow of Italy,” it said, poking fun at Marconi, “who diddled the public quite prettily.” Marconi was publicly humiliated. He didn’t have to wait long, though, to find out who was behind it. Maskleyne wrote papers bragging about what he’d done. He’d done it, he insisted, for the public good. They needed to know that if they were going to start sending messages without wires, their information wouldn’t stay private.

Hackers have been around for a lot longer than you might think. It didn’t start with the Internet—people have been breaking codes and hacking into networks for as long as it’s been possible. Long before computers, hackers were already around, breaking into phone networks, punch-card machines, and even into telegraphs. Some hackers plied their skills for profit, while others did so for more altruistic purposes. And of course, a few hacked for the time-honored tradition pranking others. |
1. It Would Be The Vastest Conspiracy Imaginable  If we can suspend our disbelief for a moment and imagine that we lived on a flat Earth that just worked perfectly, there’d still be a big issue to deal with. It’d be hard to trust anybody on a planet where millions of people are involved in the biggest and most pointlessconspiracy imaginable. Flat Earth conspiracy theorists say that the round Earth is a conspiracy perpetrated by NASA, but they’re kind of selling that idea short. Members of NASA wouldn’t be the only people behind it. Every person on Earth who has ever done anything involving space or Antarctica would be in on it. It’s hard to get an accurate number of how many people that would be, but we know that 400,000 people were involved in the Apollo project. We weren’t able to get a number for the Soviet space program, but it’s safe to guess that they employed a similar number of people over its 60-year run.[10] On top of that, about 8,000 objects have already been blasted into space by various people and groups. That includes individuals like Adam Cudworth, a 19-year-old boy who sent a £30 camera into space to photograph the Earth’s curves in 2012. He would have been in on the conspiracy, too. Then there would be all the educators cramming these lies into every curriculum taught on this planet. If the Earth were flat, there would be millions upon millions of people who knew the truth but refused to tell anyone. Millions of people would be actively lying to your face every day. In a world like that, crashing into the Sun would be a relief.

2 The Sun Would Crash Into The Earth Not that any of that would matter. If the Earth were flat, all life on the planet would end quickly when the Sun came crashing down on us. On our round Earth, a combination of momentum and gravity keeps us in orbitaround the Sun. According to the flat Earth theory, we’re not moving at all. We’re completely stationary, sitting underneath a hovering Sun. That’s a huge problem because there wouldn’t be anything stopping gravity from pulling us directly to our fiery deaths in the heart of the Sun. Admittedly, that would only be true if gravity wasn’t a lie perpetuated by an Illuminati conspiracy. Most flat Earthers think that things just fall down naturally, without any gravity getting the way, and that the Sun is a tiny ball of fire no more than 6,400 kilometers (4,000 mi) overhead. If that were the case, it would fix one problem while creating a much bigger one. Sure, we wouldn’t get pulled into the Sun. But if the laws of gravity said that everything just fell down, there’d be no reason for the Sun to break the rules. Every star, moon, and planet in the universe would instantly come crashing down on our heads.

3 There Would Be No Rain If the Earth were flat, wind would only blow in two directions: north and south. And that would cause some massive catastrophes. The rotation of our planet causes winds and ocean currents to move from east to west. If Earth stopped rotating, those winds would stop. The Coriolis effect would be completely stopped, and that would halt almost every storm on the planet.[8] That’s not a good thing. Sure, it’d be nice not to have to deal with hurricanes, but that would stop the entire system that makes rain fall from the sky. Every day would be completely dry. There might be a little bit of life along the coastline, but everything else would turn into a vast, empty desert.

4: There Wouldn’t Be Any Seasons On a flat Earth, we wouldn’t have any seasons. If you hate winter, that might just sound like a good deal. Our round Earth has seasons because it tilts on its axis. That’s why it’s summer in the Northern Hemisphere when it’s winter in the South. On a flat Earth, that tilting wouldn’t work, especially if the North Pole was in the center. The whole planet would be in the exact same season forever. That’d affect more things than you might think. If the entire planet was working on the same seasonal clock, there wouldn’t be big differences in the planet’s climates, either. So there wouldn’t be much to stop microbes and animals from traveling throughout the world. Every disease that broke out in one part of the world would spread farther and faster than we could imagine.

5 Crossing Antarctica Would Be Impossible According to most flat Earth models,Antarctica lies on the outer rim of our world. It makes a perfect ring around the planet. Along that edge is a massive ice wall to keep all the water from falling off. In that case, nobody could ever cross Antarctica—which is something a lot of people have done. People have done it in the dead of winter, they’ve done it on skis, they’ve done it in a car, and they’ve even done it on foot. It’s not just that a lot of people would have lied about traveling across Antarctica, though. That ice wall would be extremely fragile.[6] If tectonic plates didn’t work, we’d have to accept that the ice wall is just there by magic. And we’d have to hope that scientists are right about those tectonic plates staying in place. Otherwise, the ones on the edge of the Earth would shift like crazy and it’d just be a matter of time before that ice wall got pushed over the edge. We’d all be watching the ice wall in terror. At any moment, it could collapse. Water would go spilling out of the Earth, and the end would come.

6Tectonic Plates Would Stop Moving Our tectonic plates aren’t shaped likepuzzle pieces. They’re curved to fit the roundness of the planet, and they only really work on a sphere. Every time a tectonic plate moves, it interacts with a plate on the opposite side of the planet. If the Earth were flat, none of that would work. It’s not entirely clear how tectonic plates would work on a flat Earth, but our best guess is pretty simple: They wouldn’t. They’d stop moving. That’d be a pretty big deal. If our planet had no tectonic shift whatsoever, we wouldn’t have any mountains or valleys, either. The planet would be totally flat. There wouldn’t even be oceans—just a consistent pool of water that would equally cover the whole planet. Even if we did have mountains—because, for example, a wizard put them there—there’d still be major changes. For one thing, volcanoes wouldn’t work anymore and that’d be a huge problem. Volcanoes are a major reason why our atmosphere has oxygen. If those things stopped going off, we’d all have a much harder time breathing.

7 You’d Be Able To See Really, Really Far Away Not everything about life on a flat Earth would be bad. There’d be a few perks, too. For one thing, you’d just have to look out your window to see what’s going on halfway across most countries. Our eyes are actually a lot stronger than they seem to be. The only reason we struggle to see things that are far away is that the Earth curves out of sight after about 5 kilometers (3 mi).[4] If it wasn’t for the Earth’s curve, we’d be able to see things a lot farther away. On a flat Earth, you’d be able to see about as far into the horizon as you can when you look out the window of a jet plane. Sure, some of the details would be foggy. But light would really stand out. A city a few hundred miles away would make a bright flash of light off in the distance that you wouldn’t be able to miss.

8 All Forms Of Navigation Would Stop Working For the few days we’d have to live, there’d be some minor inconveniences. As it turns out, if our Earth was flat, almost nothing we use would work. Without a mantle, a core, or a magnetic north, all compasses would stop working. That would be inconvenient for humans, but it would be much worse for animals.Birds use the Earth’s magnetic field to navigate, so they wouldn’t know which way to go while flying. Stars would stay put in the sky, too. You’d no longer be able to stare up at space and see the slow rotation of the heavens. For that matter, you wouldn’t see any difference in the stars in the Northern and Southern Hemispheres, either. No matter where you were or when you looked up at the night sky, it would look exactly the same. All of which would be nothing compared to how it would affect GPS systems. They wouldn’t just stop working; they’d kill us. If there was no gravity, there’d be no reason for satellites to stay in orbit.[3] If things just fell, satellites would, too. So the approximately 1,300 satellites we’ve put in orbit around our planet would come crashing down on our heads

9 The Sun Would Fry The Planet Let’s imagine for a moment that we could somehow get past the gravity problem. Maybe we all start wearing suction cups on our shoes. Or maybe we’d find out that flat Earthers are right—that gravity is a lie and that things just naturally fall down. Even if we weren’t being pulled toward the North Pole, we’d still be in a lot of trouble because a flat Earth would have no magnetic field. The Earth is protected from cosmic flares and solar radiation by a magnetic field, and that field only exists because our planet rotates. If our planet were to stop rotating for any reason, that field would go away and we’d be in a lot of trouble. First, our planet would be absolutely bombarded by solar radiation. It would tear away at our planet’s ozone layer and, more importantly, the atmosphere, which would start getting thinner and thinner until it was completely gone. That would make us vulnerable to asteroids and meteors, too. Without a magnetic field or an atmosphere to protect us, it would just be a matter of time before our planet started getting pelted with asteroids and comets—until the surface of the Earth looked like the Moon.

10: Gravity Would Constantly Pull You North Gravity doesn’t pull people down; it pulls them toward the center of the Earth. That’s why people don’t fall off our planet—because our gravity is pulling everything right into the middle of the planet. It’s a pretty good system as long as you live on a round planet. On a flat Earth, though, gravity wouldn’t really work the same way. A flat Earth would be thin and long, which would mean that gravity wouldn’t so much pull you down as it would pull you toward whatever happens to be in the middle of the planet. On most flatEarth maps, that is the North Pole. That would mean that every person on Earth would feel a constant pull dragging them toward the North Pole. It’d probably be a pretty strong one, too—about as strong as the one that pulls you toward the ground. And the farther you got away from the North Pole, the harder it would tug you toward the middle. Not much would be able to resist it. Water would be pulled out of the ocean, trees and plants would lean out diagonally, and anyone who could hold on tight enough would be sucked into a big ball in the middle of the Arctic.

The “ flat Earth” idea has been weirdly popular lately. Working from the theories of scientific minds like Tila Tequila and B.o.B., a whole group of people have insisted that our world is as flat as a pancake for the past couple of years. It’s a silly idea, but it does bring up an interesting question. What if they were right? What if we really did live on a flat planet? As it turns out, people have thought about that question before. Scientists actually have a pretty good idea of how things would change. If the world was flat, it would be a wildly different place. |
