PoliticsThere Would Be No Campaigns Till Benue Crisis Is Over - Gov. Ortom by owoicho13(op): 11:00am On Feb 19, 2018
Benue State Governor, Samuel Ortom, has said there would be no campaigns for the 2019 elections in the state, if there was no solution to the clashes between herdsmen and farmers in the state.

Speaking in an interview on an online TV programme, The Osasu Show, in Makurdi, Benue State, the governor said he invited President Buhari to console the people of the state over the killings and destruction of their property but lamented that the President did not honour the invitation. He said, as President, Buhari was supposed to provide citizens of the country with security but had failed to take the required action to curb the killings. He said:

“For now, my primary concern is to stop these killings; to ensure that the IDPs go back to their homes and live peacefully. Once that is done, we can talk about other things. “I don’t care about what happens tomorrow. Even if I am not governor, I can stay back and fight for the right of my people.

“When we visited, we even invited the President to come to Benue State and pay his condolences to his people. We are members of the party (All Progressives Congress, APC,), he is our President. If these people are attacking us, we expect him to give us security.

“He has done a number of things. He directed NEMA to provide relief materials; he also asked for security to be beefed up, but I am not satisfied with what the Presidency is doing on this matter. There is no doubt about that. I ask for justice for Benue people because we have not been treated fairly.”

Ortom said the attacks on Benue was an act of vengeance by herders for losing the 1804 Jihad, stressing that Benue people stopped them from penetrating the state through Sokoto.

He said though he did not know the level of “support the herders get from the Presidency”, he was sure that the press statements by the Miyetti Allah Cattle Breeders Association were issued by people living in Abuja.

“These people have gone beyond grazing, it is about invading the land and taking over. All the places they have attacked, they have chased the people away and they are using their farmlands’ produce as feed for their cattle.

“They are conducting international conferences, issuing press releases and writing on social media and they have come out to say look, in 1804 Jihad, it was Benue people that stopped them from penetrating from Sokoto to the sea.

“This time around, they are not going to stop. They will make sure that they mobilise all Fulani men across the globe, especially from the West African sub-region to ensure that they acquire arms and come and invade and take over the land.

“Because they also said Nigeria is the only land that God has given them, so no other person will supervene on this land except them; that it is their own land, they got this land by conquest and we have no business staying on this land. It is unbelievable.

The statement is coming from Miyetti Allah. “Well, I wouldn’t know about their patrons or the extent of their involvement. But one thing I know is that the people that have been issuing these press statements are known. They are living in Abuja, they are living with the powers-that-be,”

Governor Ortom said. Asked why he has not met with the Sultan of Sokoto, Sa’ad Abubakar III, and Emir of Kano, Lamido Sanusi, to call the herders to order, Ortom said it was the responsibility of the Federal Government to enforce the law. “Why will I sit down with them? We have constituted authority over this country. And it is the responsibility of the Federal Government to enforce the law. We expected them to have acted,” the governor said.

PoliticsPresident Buhari’s Political Future Is In The Hands Of Nigerians - Afenifere by owoicho13(op): 3:48pm On Feb 17, 2018
The apex Yoruba socio-political group, Afenifere, has stated that the political future of President Muhammadu Buhari lies in the hands of Nigerians.

The group said it was left for people of the country to decide if the President had done well enough to return to power in 2019.

Afenifere spokesperson, Yinka Odumakin said this while fielding questions from Punch, noting that in a democratic setting such as Nigeria, Buhari had the right to seek reelection.

He added, “The declaration that Buhari would run for a second term did not count much because he has the constitutional right to run for a second term.

“He has chosen to exercise that right and I don’t think Nigerians should dwell on that.

“If Nigerians like the way he has been running the country for the past three years, let them vote for him.

“The most important thing is that he has opened the political space. Let every aspirant come out and present their programmes to Nigerians.”

He added, “Our organisation would look at all that is going on in the country, we would look at what life has become today, fuel scarcity, and the insecurity in the country and see whether the President deserves a second term or not, in due time.

“It is left for Nigerians to decide if they want him to continue running their lives this way. We want other aspirants to throw their hats in the ring so Nigerians can have a choice of who to vote for.”

PoliticsUwazurike To Prof Labdo - Fulani Never Conquered Tiv, Junkun, Kanuri People by owoicho13(op): 11:28am On Feb 17, 2018
President of Aka-Ikenga, Goddy Uwazurike, has insisted that Fulanis never conquered the Tiv, Junkun and Kanuri people.

Uwazurike made the remark while dismissing statement credited to Prof. Umar Labdo that Fulani people were destined to rule Nigeria.

Labdo, who is a Professor in the Faculty of Humanities, Northwest University, Kano had recently alleged that Benue State belongs to the Fulani by right of conquest.

Uwazurike said the Fulanis could not conquer the Tiv, Junkun and Kanuri people because they were fighters

According to Uwazurike, “No, it was in the name of religion that they killed those they killed and captured the areas, and installed themselves as Emirs. Each one of those emirs got a flag and the first thing they did, which was wise, was to adopt the commercial language of the empire they conquered – Hausa language.

“Hausa language was also the language of the palace but the Fulani retained their language, which is called Fulfulde. Even on radio, they listen to Fulfulde. If you ever get close to any herdsman, it is Fulfulde he listens to on radio. So, even as he is in the bush, if you think he is not aware of what is going on, then you are wrong.

“There has been a lot of mixture of Fulani and Hausa and Fulani-Kanuri through intermarriage but there will always be distinction. If you asked a Fulani man to make Hausa man his leader, it will be difficult. In those days, the Sardauna of Sokoto (Sir Ahmadu Bello) appointed Abubakar Tafawa Balewa from a tiny tribe in Bauchi and made him Prime Minister of Nigeria.

“He (Sardauna of Sokoto) preferred to stay as the Premier of Northern Nigeria. In simple language, the man who was calling the shots was in Kaduna and the man who was ruling was down South and nobody ever looked at Balewa as the real ruler of the North. He was never that, he was the man sent by the ruler of the North to rule Nigeria.

“But in today’s world, there are a number of emirs who are neither Hausa nor Fulani. They have their titles and the Fulani did not conquer the Kanuri Empire. They couldn’t continue their attack against the Kanuri people. The Kanuri, who had an empire called Kanem-Borno Empire, were fierce fighters. The Fulani fighters could not get into Tiv land; Tiv people resisted them.

“The whole of the Junkun Kingdom from parts of Nasarawa, Kogi and down to today’s Benue and Taraba, the fighters there were very fierce and they resisted Fulani. And the skirmishes still going on can be traced in history to what happened. And when you begin to insult the Tiv man, saying he is your servant, you’re a Fulani man, you own his place or insult a Benue man, saying it is your place and so on, he will look and wonder what you are talking about.

“He will just tell you what his own father told him. That is why it is difficult to find Muslims among the Tiv today, except only few who practise it for political purposes. They are very fierce and proud people. The same goes for the Idoma people. The Igala have many Muslims and you may live comfortably with them, but they also maintain their identity.”

The students are currently protesting against the school management’s refusal to allow those who are yet to pay their fees partake in the ongoing examination.

Most of the victims, who are final year students, could have a spill over if not allowed to take part in the examination.

The protesting students, who were seen displaying various placards, locked the two major gates leading to the school premises, chanting solidarity songs.

They called on the management to allow them sit for the exams.

He replaces retired Col. Edwin Jando who had been redeployed to Transport and Energy.

PoliticsGov. Ortom Reveals The Numbers Of People Killed Since Mass Burial Of 73 In Benue by owoicho13(op): 10:19am On Feb 16, 2018
Benue State Governor, Samuel Ortom has disclosed that 60 more people, including policemen and officers of the Nigerian Security and Civil Defense Corps (NSCDC), have been killed by Fulani herdsmen in Benue since after the mass burial of the Benue 73 on January 11 this year.

The Governor disclosed this when he played host to some Benue born musicians led by Zaaki Azzay at the Government House in Makurdi on Thursday.

He lamented that rather than the Inspector General of Police (IGP) Ibrahim Idris taking proactive measures to bring the killings to an end, he had decided to take sides.

Ortom noted that the IGP’s relocation to Benue at the height of the attacks further heightened tensions as the invading herdsmen became more daring in their attacks, killing even security operatives; and that he (IGP) refused to arrest anyone.

“The IGP has failed us but we are grateful to President Muhammadu Buhari for sending the Army to come and perform ‘Operation Cat Race’ in Benue. We hope that the Cat will be able to catch all the rats.

“All we are asking for is justice because in a situation where you favour a particular section and bias in your judgement against the other is not fair. That is why we are asking the IGP to resign his appointment to give way to another person who can perform better.

“That was why we decided to put an end to these wanton killings by enacting the law. The law emanated from the Benue people and they own it. The law protects everyone residing in Benue including the Fulani. But staying in Benue, you must obey the laws of the land. We are not intimidated by the killings but all we ask for is let there be justice,” he said.

PoliticsGovernor Ortom Calls On United Nations For Help Over Benue Killings by owoicho13(op): 4:22pm On Feb 15, 2018
Benue State Governor, Samuel Ortom, yesterday called on the United Nations, UN, to intervene in the human crisis resulting from the genocide perpetrated by armed herdsmen in the state.

The Governor made the call on Wednesday at the United Nations Development Programme, UNDP, office in Abuja when he led a delegation of the state to make a presentation on the continuous killing of Benue people by rampaging herdsmen.

Governor Ortom informed the gathering that as an administration, which believes in the rule of law and peaceful coexistence, series of meetings for dialogue were organised by the Benue State Government to find a solution to the crisis without much success leading to the promulgation of the Open Grazing Prohibition and Ranches Establishment Law.

He argued that due process was followed in the making of the law, saying in addition to conducting public hearings, which involved all the stakeholders in the three Senatorial districts of the state and Makurdi, a grace period of six months was allowed for people involved in livestock business to make adjustments.

PoliticsPresident Buhari Should Emulate South African President, Zuma By Resigning - ADP by owoicho13(op): 1:57pm On Feb 15, 2018
The Action Democratic Party (ADP) has advised President Buhari to emulate the immediate past President of South Africa, Jacob Zuma, who resigned over his recall by his country’s governing party, the African National Congress (ANC).

ADP, in a statement on Thursday by its Lagos spokesperson, Prince Adelaja Adeoye, noted that Buhari should go because Nigerians are tired of under-development under him.

ADP said, “ANC is a party of notable politicians who cannot be intimidated by their president or other elective leaders, unlike the Nigeria’s governing All Progressives Congress (APC) filled with sycophants.

“Party leaders have turned themselves to “yes men” for a president they are supposed to hold accountable, make sure he delivers and ensure that he does not derail the country’s democracy.”

The party recalled that it had made several calls, counseling the president to quietly step down and allow another Nigerian with the capacity to govern.

Adelaja stressed further that the widespread violence, ethnic clashes, and unabated spread of poverty due to the bad economy in the country is alarming.

ADP hailed South Africans “for speaking in one voice and not allowing politicians to divide them with religion or ethnicity because no matter where a bad leader comes from, all citizens suffer the misrule.”

It said Nigerians have a lot to learn from Zimbabwe, South Africa and other countries who changed leaders that have disappointed them.

“President Buhari should see his position as a privilege to serve; it is not his birth right. If the same people who shouted “Sai Baba” and elected him are saying enough is enough, he should heed their calls and not turn himself into a sit tight leader.”

ADP charged credible and competent Nigerians to begin to show interest in 2019 election and warned INEC that any conduct below free and fair polls in 2019 would be resisted.

Foreign AffairsRead Jecob Zuma's Full Speech As He Resigned As South Africa President by owoicho13(op): 1:41pm On Feb 15, 2018
South Africa’s embattled President, Jacob Zuma on Wednesday night resigned from office with immediate effect.

This followed increasing pressure by the ruling party, the African National Congress (ANC).

Zuma in his resignation speech said division and violence in the ruling party influenced his resignation.

Read his speech below...

“Members of the Media, present here,

Fellow South Africans, I address you after weeks of speculation about my future as President of the Republic of South Africa.

In particular, I make reference to the much publicized and awaited decision of the African National Congress issued on 13 February 2018.

It is now public knowledge that the National Executive Committee of the ANC resolved to recall me as the President of the Republic.

I have also learned that, before I respond to the initial decision, a new decision has been made by the ANC, whose effect is that I have now been compelled to resign by way of a motion of no confidence, set down for tomorrow, 15 February 2018.

The ANC is indeed the party on whose nomination I became a candidate for the Presidency of the Republic of South Africa after its victory of the national elections of 2014.
It was on the ANC’s nomination that I was later elected by the majority in the National Assembly as the President of the Republic.

I am forever indebted to the ANC, the liberation movement I have served almost all my life.

I respect each member and leader of this glorious movement.

I respect its gallant fight against centuries of white minority brutality, whose relics remain today and continue to be entrenched in all manner of sophisticated ways, in order to ensure the continued survival of white privilege.

I do take seriously and am grateful to the ANC that, in the face of its revolutionary mission to ensure a better life for all and the creation of a non-racial, non-sexist and democratic South Africa, it deployed me at the pinnacle of its role in government.

I was also elected in terms of section 86 of the Constitution and from that moment pledged my loyalty to the Constitution of the Republic of South Africa.

It has indeed been a great learning experience, a mammoth task, the performance of which can never be done without difficulty and learning on the way.

None of us, no matter how perfect, can claim that the building of a new society and the marshalling of a former liberation movement into a modern political party all happen in a straight line. It has detours, human error and boulders strewn along the path.

We will tell Zuma what he did wrong‚ says ANC

The ANC has promised to explain to former president Jacob Zuma exactly what he did wrong.

Because the struggle and politics are human activities, their pursuit is not without the taints of human nature. All my life, I have served and will continue to serve the ANC in its pursuit of the objectives of the National Democratic Revolution.

I serve in my capacity as President of the Republic of South Africa within the prism of our much acclaimed Constitution, whose foundational values I fully subscribe to.

I understand fully that while I serve at the pleasure of my party, the ANC, the door through which I officially came to serve the people of South Africa is the National Assembly, without which no political party can impose its candidate on the electorate, no matter how popular.

This Constitutional line between Party and State is often forgotten in the usual business of party political contestations.

As we fight our own battles in the corridors of political power, and sometimes serving the very interests of the oppressors of yesteryear, who joyfully celebrate as we lynch one another, we often forget the citizens on whose behalf we create a better life.

We tend to place the political party above the supreme law of the country, which is the rule book for the country’s political engagement.

I do not make this reference because I am above reproach. Nor do I wish to proclaim that in undertaking my political responsibilities I have been the epitome of perfection. If truth be told, none of us are.

There has been much speculation about how the President of the Republic should exit his or her office.

In my case, some have even dared to suggest that one’s perks and post-service benefits should determine how one chooses to vacate public office.

Often these concerns about perks and benefits are raised by the very same people seeking to speak as paragons of virtue and all things constitutional.

Some even suggest that the relevant constitutional provisions, sections 89 and 102, in terms of which the President should be removed from office, would constitute an embarrassment or humiliation.

For that reason, various suggestions are made to help leaders avoid this constitutional route of vacating political office without perks.

If we avail ourselves to serve in terms of the Constitution, we should be prepared, if needs be, and if those we serve deem it appropriate, to suffer the hardship that comes with our constitutional obligations.

Whether we lose our post-political office benefits, should not determine how we act in the time of our departure.

Nor did I agree to serve because there are no better cadres in the ANC and the country. Most importantly, I did not agree to serve in order to exit with perks and benefits of the Office of the President.

Jacob Zuma may no longer be the president of South Africa, but we will miss his charisma. Here are some of the moments during his reign that made him the president with charm.
It is my Party that placed me before the representatives of the people in the National Assembly to be elected. It is my Party that availed me to serve on the basis of the Constitution as the supreme law of the land.

the Christian Association of Nigeria, CAN, South South zone, under the leadership of Archbishop God-Dowell Avwomakpa, yesterday, visited the IDP camp at Gbajimbato in Benue State.

Avwomakpa, Archbishop of Christ Missionaries Crusaders International and President of Niger Delta Bishops Forum, said the visit was to show solidarity of Christians in the South-South region with fellow Christians in the state who have been affected by herdsmen attacks resulting in the killing of hundreds of persons.

Shortly after presenting the IDP camp at Gbajimba with relief materials, Avwomakpa called on concerned Nigerians to come to the aid of displaced persons in the different camps in Benue State. Avwomakpa, who is billed to pray at a Congressional session in the United States, said the world should come to the aid of Benue State indigenes so that those who are displaced can be assisted to live normal lives.

He called on the government to protect the schools in local communities so that children will be encouraged to go to school and not denied primary and secondary education. He also called on President Muhammadu Buhari to send soldiers to Benue State to protect lives and property of the people of the state as well as other places where innocent citizens are killed with reckless abandon.

PoliticsBenue Killings: Fulani Herdsmen Agrees To Obey Benue Anti-open Grazing Law by owoicho13(op): 11:00am On Feb 14, 2018
Fulani herdsmen have finally agreed to obey the Benue Anti-Open Grazing Law, after several attacks that have led to the death of many people in the state.

Leader of the NEC subcommittee on farmers and herdsmen skirmishes and Governor of Ebonyi State, David Umahi, who disclosed this said the herdsmen, however, gave a condition before obeying the law.

Addressing journalists in Makurdi, the Benue State capital, yesterday, Umahi said the herdsmen asked for time to allow them key into the implementation of the law and that the Federal Government should see animal husbandry as part of its Agricultural programme.

Umahi said all parties involved in the crisis were committed to ceasefire, even as he noted that the problem of invasion was by undocumented herdsmen from other parts of West Africa.

The governor said the committee had also restated its commitment to pursue peace, ensure disarmament of any militia groups as well as the arrest of any group harbouring militia and support security agencies to ensure the arrest of anyone in possession of arms.

On the comment that Benue belong to Fulani by conquest, Umahi said, “In our own conviction, we believe that Benue has the right to make laws and whoever stays in Benue has the duty to obey the law and the responsibility to dialogue with the state if they feel the law will not favour them.”

Umahi added: “We observed that all the parties are willing to make peace and we are looking at the conditions and suggestions of the various groups handed over to us as the way forward to having peace.

“From discussions, it was agreed by the parties that Benue State has the right to make laws and that individuals or group of people that are in the state have a duty to obey the law.

“They also have a duty to meet with the authorities of the law to dialogue on any section of the law that they believe will not favour them.

“We have agreed, from all parties to this unfortunate matter, that we will pursue peace, disarm any group that is harbouring militia and support the security chiefs to arrest anyone found with illegal weapons.

“The security people have also vowed that inline with the directive they have, anybody with illegal weapon must be arrested, no matter who the person is.

“The cheering news is that the herdsmen in Benue and Nasarawa states are willing to abide by the Open Grazing Prohibition Law of Benue State but they would need more time for ranching and support from the Federal Government to move into grazing reserves.”

Benue State Governor, Samuel Ortom and his and his Taraba State counterpart, Mr Darius Ishaka, have hit out at the Emir of Kano, Muhammadu Sanusi II, after he accused him of sponsoring the militia causing havoc in the states.

Sanusi claims Ortom training militia to attack the herdsmen.

During a meeting with the Miyetti Allah Cattle Breeders’ Association of Nigeria (MACBAN) in Niger State, Sanusi regretted the attitude of the states towards open grazing.

He said: “We hope that the Vice President will speak to the Governors of Taraba and Benue in particular, on the manner the militias have continued to implement these obnoxious and unconstitutional laws”.

“We hope that he will speak to the governors and the traditional rulers of the Bachama, the Tivs. This country cannot afford ethnic conflicts and hopefully we will sit down with them and find a way forward.”

Reacting to the statement, Ortom’s Chief Press Secretary, Terver Akase, absolved his principal of the allegations.

Akase argued that if the Governor was sponsoring the militia, they would not have launched an attack on the state.

Similarly, the Senior Special Assistant to Governor Ishaku on Media and Publicity, Bala Abu, described the allegation as “false and unfair.”

“The government has not recruited militia and is not involved in the training of such people anywhere in or outside of the state.

“The government advises the Emir to rather use his vantage position as a traditional and religious leader to complement the peace efforts of the government than raise unnecessary alarm capable of causing disaffection among the peace-loving people of Taraba State,” Abu said in a statement.

Christianity EtcCAN Calls On FG To Compensate Victims Of Herdsmen Attack In Benue State by owoicho13(op): 10:49am On Feb 13, 2018
The Christian Association of Nigerian, CAN, has called on the Federal Government to compensate the victims of the New Year day killings in Benue ‎State, where over 73 lives were lost.

Speaking Monday at the stakeholders’ meeting organized for members of the National Economic Council Committee on the herdsmen/ Farmers crisis in Makurdi, the Benue ‎State chairmen of CAN, Rev. Akpen Leva lamented that the people had been abandoned by the Federal government despite the huge losses they suffered directly and indirectly.

Rev. Leva said, “considering the losses suffered by the people of Benue state, the federal government has not found it expedient to avail the victims any form of compensation, it is indeed saddening.

“What we demand for is adequate compensation for those killed, we need compensation for those in the Internally Displaced Persons, IDPs, camp where over 100,000 persons are currently taking refuge.

“We also demand the arrest and prosecution of the leadership of Maiyetti Allah kautal Hore because they had issued threats before the killings, that is the more reason why they should be made to answer to the law because nobody should be seen to be above the law.

“Our fear is that the incursion in our communities is another grand plan to Islamize the country because the sequence of the attacks clearly shows that they are carried out in Christian communities.”

On his part, former military Governor of Benue state, General Atom Kpera (Retired) cautioned that the herdsmen menace if not checked could lead to anarchy in the country.

“We are gradually walking into anarchy in this country. People may be forced to take up arms to defend themselves if something urgent is not done to stop the killings.

“The federal government must know that we all belong to this country and we must all be protected from the menace of herdsmen and those perpetrating the killings arrested and made to face the law,” he said.

On his part, the Tor Tiv, Prof. James Ayatse faulted the timing of the deployment of military personnel in the state.

PoliticsReno Omokri Reacts To Statement Condemning Gov. Wike For Donating N200m To Benue by owoicho13(op): 11:19am On Feb 09, 2018
Former presidential aide, Reno Omokri has described All Progressives Congress as a wicked and inhuman party.

This is in reaction to the party’s statement condemning Rivers State governor Nyesom Wike for donating N200m to Benue victims.

Rivers State chapter of the APC had in a statement taken a swipe at Governor Wike, accusing him of ‘playing RobinHood politics’ in his Wednesday’s condolence visit to Benue state.

Spokesman, Chris Finebone was quoted as saying ” Quite disappointing to the APC is that some prominent Rivers indigenes (some of whose people are being killed here in the State) joined the governor to Benue State and even prayed at the graveside of the victims while their own people are being killed in Rivers State without any intervention by Gov. Wike and his government.”

Reacting to the statement Reno Omokri wrote...

“What a wicked and inhuman party! You did not donate. Your President did not donate.

“Your Governors did not donate. Yet the fault is with the man that donated? May Nigeria NEVER be cursed with such an evil party in future!”
