Army Major killed by gunmen in Anambra

UNKNOWN gunmen have reportedly killed an army officer whose name was given as Major Churchill Orji at the dangerous Azia area in Ihiala local government area of Anambra State.

Orji hailed from Nneogidi village, Agulu in Anaocha local government area of the state. It was not clear what took him to Azia which is considered one of the most part of the state as the area has become a den of the dreaded gunmen.

Orji’s secondary school mate, Leonard Edu, while lamenting the death of the Army officer said he was his senior at Agulu Boys Secondary School.

“He was our labour prefect then. It is true that he was killed by unknown gunmen at Azia, although we are yet to have the details of what led to his death”, Edu said.

Since his death, Orji’s friends have also been reacting in the social media. In a tribute, one of them said: “Rest in peace my brother from Nneogidi village, Agulu, Major Churchil Orji killed yesterday( Sunday) at Azia/Ukpor while defending the South-East from the marauders.”

Another also wrote: “Father(God), we are at your mercy in Anambra State. May the soul of Major C Orji rest in peace.”

Anambra State Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), Mr Tochukwu Ikenga could not confirm the incident, as he said that he was yet to receive the report.

Stray bullet k1lls young woman as soldiers and unknown gunmen engage in shootout in Abia State

A stray bullet has k1lled a young woman identified as Chinenye Ajunwa in Ebem Ohafia, headquarter of Ohafia Local Government Area of Abia.

Soldiers and gunmen were engaging in a gun duel in the community when a stray bullet hit Chinenye on Wednesday, August 17, 2022.

At least three others, including a yet-to-be identified soldier, who was serving at 14 Brigade Headquarters, Goodluck Ebele Jonathan Barracks, Ohafia, were also k1lled.

According to The Nation, the soldiers were responding to a distress call from one of their colleagues who escaped being k1lled in Ebem community.

The rescued soldier had gone to Ebem market to buy groceries when he noticed that he was being trailed by some armed men.

A source said: "He heard when the gunmen were asking about a soldier that Okada just brought and quickly hid somewhere, and from his hideout he sent an SOS message to the Brigade."

Soldiers were mobilized for his rescue and the gunmen engaged the soldiers.

Two of the gunmen were k1lled.

It was while the soldiers were on patrol in the community, after rescuing the other soldier, that they discovered that the gunmen had k1lled a soldier in the same community.

Chinenye, who was in her shop with her father during the gun battle, was struck by a stray bullet.

The deceased, said to be from Amuta in Isuikwuato local government area resident in Ohafia, d1ed before help could get to her.

In the South East today, you are more likely to be killed by a Soldier than a gun man. If masked gunmen went past a street in the South East today, they are more likely to be cheered by the people. But if armed Soldiers go past the same street, people are more likely to run for their lives.

This Ohawfia area has suffered so much from having a military barrak in their area due to the excesses of Soldiers who routinely brutalise and kill the locals. Every year, there must be a major confrontation between Ohawfia people and Soldiers which leads several people dead.

Unknown gunmen have reportedly abducted two students of the Nigerian Law School, Agbani, Enugu State campus.

It was gathered that the students went to Eke Agbani market area to buy food before they were ambushed by the gunmen on Wednesday night, August 17, 2022.

Sources who spoke to newsmen disclosed that the yet-to-be-identified students were abducted around 8pm.

"Two Nigerian Law School students were kidnapped yesterday night by unidentified gunmen at Eke market, Agbani, Enugu. Actually, four students were in the car that belonged to one of the students. The students left the campus to get food around 8pm. However, two students managed to escape at gunpoint. We yet to hear anything from the abductors so far,” a source told newsmen.
