Team Nigeria won its first gold medal on Wednesday at the ongoing 12th African Games in Rabat, Morocco, by its representatives in the taekwondo event. Athletes in that category also won two bronze medals on the same day. Chinazum Nwosu won the gold medal in the female 53kg event, while Sunday Onofe and Okuomose Benjamin won the bronze medals in the male 87kg and +87kg events respectively. Nwosu had drawn bye in the preliminary round, while she beat Halidou Balkissa of Republic of Niger 23-9 in the quarter-finals and Tsebaot Fikadu of Ethiopia 14-10 in the semi-finals. She went on to beat Morocco’s Oumaima El Bouchti 26-22 in the final. On his part, Onofe beat Congo DR’s Esende Chadrack 25-05 in the preliminary round and Fredric Adoua of Chad 15-5 in the quarter-finals. He however, lost to eventual gold medallist, Seydou Gbane, of Cote d’Ivoire 15-12 in the semi-final. Benjamin also drew bye in the preliminaries, beat Senegal’s Laye Seye 40-37 in the quarter-finals and lost to Niger’s Alfaga Abdul Razak 32-10 in the semi-finals, according to the News Agency of Nigeria. The Peoples Democratic Party has described President Muhammadu Buhari's new cabinet as a team made up of persons “indicted for corruption and treasury looting". The party made its position known in a statement by National Publicity Secretary, Mr Kola Ologbodiyan. Ologbodiyan said all 43 ministers are, “a poor parade of recycled foot-travelers”. He added that, “The PDP is, however, not surprised that the President had no clear-cut blueprint to rescue the nation from the economic, security and social quagmires which his administration had plunged our nation into in the last four years. “Of course, Mr President had on several occasions demonstrated a lack of required capacity to lead a nation as complex as Nigeria, especially at these trying times. “At a ceremony where Nigerians had expected the forceful articulation of a progressive policy thrust, Mr President bored the nation with an empty and directionless script that only evoked more despondency in our nation. “Instead of helping President Buhari to offer hope, his handlers were more interested on photo-ups and refreshments, away from serious business of governance.” The party called on Nigerians not to lose hope in the face of abandonment by the Buhari led administration. Nigeria has gone three years without a case of polio, putting it on the brink of being declared free of the disease. This is a dramatic change from 2012 when the country accounted for more than half of all polio cases worldwide, the World Health Organization has said . The head of the primary health care agency, Dr Faisal Shuaib, said Nigeria had reached a "historic milestone". But it will be several months before the country can officially be labelled polio-free. The first criteria, no case for three years, has been achieved. But now the WHO needs to make sure there is a robust surveillance system in Nigeria to be certain that there are no further cases of the wild polio virus, chairman of Nigeria's polio committee, Dr Tunji Funsho, told BBC Newsday. Nigeria is the last country in Africa to have witnessed a case of polio - in Borno state, in the north-east. Outside of Nigeria, the last case on the continent was in the Puntland region of Somalia, in 2014. Insecurity in the north-east of Nigeria had hindered the polio vaccination programme, but success in fighting the Boko Haram militant group has been cited as one of the reasons behind getting polio under control. In addition, officials have said that political support and an injection of funds have also helped. In 2018, there was a total of 33 polio cases confined to just two countries: Afghanistan and Pakistan. WHAT IS POLIO? Polio, or poliomyelitis, mainly affects children aged under five It is a highly infectious disease caused by a virus. It invades the nervous system and can cause total paralysis in a matter of hours Initial symptoms include fever, fatigue, headache, vomiting, stiffness of the neck and pains in the limbs One in 200 infections leads to irreversible paralysis. Among those paralysed, 5% to 10% die when their breathing muscles become immobilised Today, only two countries - Afghanistan and Pakistan - remain polio-endemic, down from more than 125 in 1988 SOURCE:BBC |

5. LEARN A NEW LANGUAGE - Although this can be hard to believe, learning another language stimulates the brain and opens up all sorts of pathways. This is because there is a lot of listening, hearing and focusing involved. 4. SOLVE PUZZLES - Games and puzzles will gradually sharpen your brain and enhance your problem-solving abilities. They can also prevent or delay the onset of dementia later in life. PICK A NEW HOBBY - Learning a new skill is also a great way to give your brain a workout. Creative skills especially, like music, dance, and visual art, exercise different parts of your brain and all have incredible benefits. Learning how to play an instrument is another way to exercise your brain. 2. TAKE A COOKING CLASS - Cooking uses a number of senses: smell, touch, sight, and taste, which all involve different parts of the brain. This will help sharpen your memory and awareness. Learning a number of different recipes will also help improve your memory. 1. WRITE THINGS DOWN - Writing things down by hand is the easiest way to exercise your brain. Writing can actually coordinate both sides of your brain, improving your brain’s function. It can also boost your cognitive skills. Furthermore, many psychologists believe that writing something by hand has a longer-lasting effect on memory. This works for both adults and kids. Writing by hand also activates the regions of the brain linked to reading. This improves the brain function as you are using more of your brain.
