Health / Ebola Salt Trash by passionateyouth: 8:02am On Aug 08, 2014
It has been a widespread news that Ebola can be prevented using salt. The news spread like a wildfire early this morning. The noise of my neighbors activities early this morning woke me only to be told they are undergoing rites to avoid Ebola. Why are we like this in Nigeria? While other are looking for vaccines, Nigerians are busy inventing rumours. To confirm it to doubters, the federal ministry of health have debunked the news.

Family / 12 Things Fathers Should Do With Their Children During This Holiday by passionateyouth: 9:30pm On Aug 03, 2014
A Greek philosopher once defined man as a rational animal. If you think about it at all, you will realize that this is a terrible definition. Man may be a thinking animal, but much of what men do, maybe even most of what they do, is neither logical nor rational. Euripides was far closer to truth when he described men as full of conflicting, irrational desires, creatures that were very hard to understand, especially in regard to their treatment of women and sometimes children. Here are few things men can do for a change regarding their children.

Tell your child stories about when you were little. Let her know about mistakes you made and things you did right.
Talk to your child about what she wants to do when she grows up and visit workplaces where she can learn about different jobs.
Make your child’s favorite meal with her.
Plan a picnic with your child. Have her help you pack the lunch and find a local park or outdoor spot to go for the picnic, even if it’s your own yard.
Listen to your child’s favorite music and watch his or her favorite TV shows and movies with her.
Encourage or support your child’s interests and schoolwork by asking her to share with you what she is learning. Spend time with your child as she completes her homework.
Encourage your child to read in her free time. Take her to the library and let her get her own library card.
Play board games with your child.
Be physically active with your child. Go for a walk together or teach them how to play a game (I'll suggest lawn tennis).
Tell your child stories about when you were little. Let her know about mistakes you made and things you did right.
Meet and be interested in your child’s friends. Talk to her friends’ parents by phone or in person if your child will be spending time at their home.
Let children know what you expect and why, like how you want her to behave in school or at home. Be consistent

Politics / US Health Officials To Screen Goodluck For Ebola When He Arrives In Washington by passionateyouth: 3:35pm On Aug 03, 2014
PRESIDENT Goodluck Jonathan and his entourage will be subjected to tests for the deadly ebola virus by US health officials when they arrive in Washington DC tomorrow for a special African/American Leaders Summit.

Over recent weeks, about 1,300 people have been infected with the deadly ebola virus disease (EVD) currently sweeping across West Africa. Sierra Leone, Guinea and Liberia have been the worst affected countries, with almost 800 people dying from the virus that has a 90% casualty rate and no known cure.

This week, President Jonathan and several African leaders will be attending a special summit in Washington called by President Barack Obama and fearful that they may be carrying the virus, US health officials plan to screen them. President Obama explained that the action would be taken to protect the US from any outbreak of the disease.

President Obama said: “Folks who are from these countries that have even a marginal risk, or an infinitesimal risk of having been exposed in some fashion, we’re making sure we’re doing screening." Already, the presidents of Liberia and Sierra Leone, Ellen Johnson-Sirleaf and Ernest Bai Koroma, have said they will not be able to attend the summit due to the severity of the outbreak in their countries.

Meanwhile, Professor Oyewole Tomori, a virologist and president of the Nigerian Academy of Science, has warned that the porous nature of Nigerian hospitals would allow the disease to spread easily between patients and health workers. He also criticised the government's handling of the case of Liberian Patrick Sawyer, which caught Nigeria unawares, as the country was not prepared enough for the disease.

Professor Tomori said: “In an ideal situation, there is no need to close the border and as a matter of fact, there are too many entry points into the country, so how many of these can be closed? But beyond closing the borders is the actual state of preparedness.

"The truth of the matter is we’re not prepared. Also, the government needs to collaborate with private medical laboratory facilities."

There are about 1,479 illegal routes into Nigeria, through which smugglers, illegal immigrants and terrorists have been infiltrating the country. Despite having immigration and health officers who man 114 regular border posts, the level of territorial management has been described as inadequate to protect the country from the ebola virus.

Illegal immigrants from Chad, Mali, Niger, Cameroun, Togo, Benin Republic and other countries, who find Nigeria as an attractive destination, may quicken the spread of the deadly disease. Last Sunday, the federal government ordered the setting up of disease isolation centres at international airports across Nigeria.

Politics / Bill Clinton: ‘I Could Have Killed Osama Bin Laden Before 9/11 Attacks’ by passionateyouth: 11:05am On Aug 02, 2014
Hours before the 9/11 terrorist attacks, former U.S. President Bill Clinton told an audience in Australia about his missed chance to kill attack mastermind Osama bin Laden, according to audio released this week.

Clinton was speaking at a business meeting in Melbourne when the topic turned to terrorism.

“And I’m just saying, you know, if I were Osama bin Laden … He’s a very smart guy. I spent a lot of time thinking about him. And I nearly got him once,” Clinton said in the audio, which was recorded by former Liberal Party head Michael Kroger and aired by Sky News.

“I nearly got him. And I could have killed him, but I would have had to destroy a little town called Kandahar in Afghanistan and kill 300 innocent women and children, and then I would have been no better than him.

“And so I didn’t do it.”

Hours after Clinton spoke, a hijacked Boeing 767 slammed into the north tower of New York City’s World Trade Centre. A second plane struck the south tower 18 minutes later. Other planes crashed in Washington, D.C. and western Pennsylvania. The attacks, organized by bin Laden, killed more than 3,000 people.

Bin Laden, who headed the terrorist group al Qaeda, had been targeted by authorities due to his role in the 1998 bombings of U.S. embassies in Tanzania and Kenya, reports ABC News.

Clinton’s statements referred to a proposed strike in December 1998, after intelligence indicated that Bin Laden was staying at the governor’s residence in Kandahar. That proposed attack was addressed in the 9/11 Commission Report, released in 2004.

According to the report, the missed chance made some lower-level officials angry, but later intelligence appeared to show that bin Laden had left his quarters.

“The principals’ wariness about ordering a strike appears to have been vindicated: Bin Laden left his room unexpectedly, and if a strike had been ordered he would not have been hit,” the commission wrote.

As argued on fox news, Bill Clinton was labelled a moral coward, saying he have averted the death of Americans. They further noted that Clinton was more concern with what the world would say about him rather than Americans.

Celebrities / Kanye West Covers GQ Magazine by passionateyouth: 7:50pm On Jul 26, 2014
GQ just released their August issue today, with Kanye
West gracing the cover. The interview covers everything
from his marriage to Kim, being a celebrity, a father,
designing fashion, and his upcoming project. Oh yeah,
and it wouldn't be a Kanye interview without some
outlandish quotes, right?
On his life constantly being documented:
“I hope we don’t see no paparazzi today. Because I’m
still getting acquainted with these jogging pants I threw
on. Like, ‘That’s not my statement!’”
Apparently, hes a blowfish:
"I'm a blowfish. I'm not a shark, I'm a blowfish. So that
perfect example about me hitting my head [he walked
into a street sign and it was caught by paparazzi], it's
like a blowfish. I wasn't coming out of my house going
to a paparazzi's house to attack them. I'm defending my
family in front of my own house. I'm defending my name
as someone's screaming something negative at me.
That's a blowfish. People have me pinned as a shark or a
predator in some way, and in no way am I that. I
wouldn't want to hurt anyone. I want to defend people. I
want to help people."
On the toilets at the wedding ceremony (which were
reportedly made of gold):
"The bathrooms — that usually would be a porta-potty —
were wrapped in a fabric that was neutral to match the
fort ... the same materials that were used to cover the
bathroom, we said, 'Let's just use that [to cover a bar at
the reception], because this is all we have to make the
bar look better.' Which it did, in the end."
On the success of last summers 'Yeezus ' and his song
'New Slaves' :
"That song that I do feel is the best rap verse of all time
— ' New Slaves .' The second verse. I argue that it's the
best rap verse of all time. It's the Coming to America or
Anchorman of a verse. You know, it's got the funny shit.
It's got the antagonization. It's got patterns. It's got
social and political consciousness. It's got struggle. It's
got bravado. It's everything that a rap verse is supposed
to be."

Jobs/Vacancies / Has Everything Worth Inventing Already Invented? by passionateyouth: 7:35am On Jul 24, 2014
Some times I look back and revel in the great things
that the great men have invented. Most of these men
did not have quality education we have today. Also
their is no internet access which can make research
work easier and efficient. Yet, the inventions of these
men in the past centuries cannot be compared to the
few (mostly improved version of what these men had
already invented) inventions of today. This makes me
wonder ...HAS EVERYTHING WORTH INVENTING
ALREADY INVENTED?

Politics / 100 Days Of Chibok Girls In Captivity by passionateyouth: 7:21am On Jul 23, 2014
Sounds of gunshots broke the silence of the night, forcing the students out of their beds. Shaking like one possessed by demons, Patience Bulus, one of the students in the hostel, jumped out of her bed, scampering from one part of the room to the other. This is just as her colleagues, other female students in the hostel also in panic state, scrambled to the entrance of the hostel. And just then, armed gunmen dressed in military camouflage broke into the hostel, ordering them out of the hostel.

"We are here to assist and protect you," one of the gunmen told the now frightened female students. "If you do as we instruct you, no harm shall come to you; but if you disobey us, surely, you will die," one of the gunmen, speaking with a baritone voice told the girls.

Patience, 18, and the other students were herded out of the hostel by the gunmen and made to sit under a big tree in the school compound. They then went round the school, setting fire on the hostel, classrooms and other buildings.

This is not a scene from a movie, but a true story of how over 300 female students were kidnapped at gunpoint in Chibok by Boko Haram insurgents in the night of 14th April, 2014.

It is 100 days today since the kidnap of these students of the Government Girls' Secondary School, Chibok in Borno State, North-eastern part of the country, yet, they've not been rescued, and this is despite the public outcry that greeted the incident within and outside the country.

The girls were final year students brought together from the various secondary schools in and around towns and villages close to Chibok town, to write their WAEC examinations in the school. Since the kidnap of these girls, dozens of them have escaped from Sambisa Forest where they are being held captive, but more than 200 of them still remain in captivity. Their continuous detention by Boko Haram insurgents has continued to be a thing of concern not only to the Nigerian public, but also to the international community.

Patience, one of the girls who escaped from the Boko Haram gunmen on the night of their kidnap, told LEADERSHIP in an exclusive interview that: "It was on Monday, 14th April, 2014, when Boko Haram gunmen came into our school at about 11:30pm. They wore military camouflage and we thought they were soldiers who had come to assist us but we later realised that they were Boko Haram gunmen.

"They ordered us to move out of our dormitories and to the school administration block where they ordered us to sit on the ground, after which they began shooting and burning down school buildings.

Having set fire on the school buildings, they moved us to a big locust bean tree and forced us to enter some trucks they brought with them. Some of the trucks had food items that were taken by the Boko Haram men from the school's food store. So, they asked us all to either enter the trucks or get killed. We were all scared and had to enter the vehicles.

"When all of us were inside the vehicles, the trucks drove through bush roads and paths that lead to the Sambisa Forest for about 30 minutes, and then some of them broke down along the way. At that point, the gunmen brought out the girls in the vehicles that broke down and forced them into the others even when they could not contain us. Initially, they had nine vehicles, but three had faults. So, after forcing the girls in the three vehicles to join us, the three vehicles with faults were burnt by them," said Patience, a student in Senior Secondary 3A of the Government Girls' Secondary School, Chibok.

Phones / Microsoft CEO Affirms One Windows For All Devices by passionateyouth: 7:04am On Jul 23, 2014
Microsoft's CEO affirmed on Tuesday that all versions of
Windows will merge into one operating system for all
devices.
"We will streamline the next version of Windows from
three operating systems into one single converged
operating system for screens of all sizes," CEO Satya
Nadella said in prepared remarks during the company's
fourth-quarter earnings conference call. "We will unify
our stores, commerce and developer platforms to drive a
more coherent user experience and a broader developer
opportunity."
Nadella expanded on this theme when responding to an
analyst's question.
"One of the beauties of [the] universal Windows app is, it
aggregates for the first time for us all of our Windows
volume...which is 300 plus million units." Microsoft has talked about this before. Back in April, the
company discussed allowing developers to build
universal apps that will work across Windows Phone,
Windows, and Xbox devices.
But Nadella, on Tuesday, stated in no uncertain terms
that the merger of operating systems is going forward.
And he signaled that "major" changes are coming to
Windows.
"We look forward to sharing more about our next major
wave of Windows enhancements in the coming months,"
he said.

Politics / Doctors Or Federal Government : Who Is To Blame? by passionateyouth: 7:23am On Jul 22, 2014
Its no longer news that the Nigeria Medical Association (NMA) are on strike. The 20-day-old strike is due to the inability of the Federal Government to meet the demands of the association.

FEDERAL GOVERNMENT

Top government officials has met with the representative of the Nigeria Medical Association to call off the strike in the various closed-door meeting they had. The Minister of Health, Prof. Onyebuchi Chukwu, insists that the Federal Government has met all the doctors' demands, which according to him led to the signing of two memoranda of understanding (MoU) at two separate meetings chaired by the Secretary to the Government, Anyim Pius Anyim.

Chukwu challenged the association to a five-hour public debate with the Federal Government, for both side to clearly state the issues in contention. The Government was convinced that it has done is part.

Contradicting what he said, in subsequent meetings it was reported that a key issue of discord was the N6.7bn arrears of benefit owed the doctors. The arrears sum up to N13bn when using their demand rate. With this development, the committee only agree to pay two month of the arrears out of the entire year. They promised that the other balance would be provided in the 2015 budget for appropriation by the National Assembly.

NIGERIA MEDICAL ASSOCIATION

Improving the health sector is believed to be the goal of the doctors' association. Reducing the rate at which people travel oversea for medical attention. According to them, this can only be done when hospitals are provided with equipments and the medical personnel are well-paid (they will be happy to work). In their latest meeting, the representatives of the doctors refuse to shift ground after the Federal Government propose the payment of only two month arrears with the balance being added to next year's budget.

MY OPINION

Many people are dying because of this tug of war between the Federal Government and the Doctors. I think the Federal Government should fully meet the demands of the association. After many years they spent in school yet their wages cannot be compare with those in politics, which to my opinion is unfair. This signals the wrong thing to the youths, most of them aspiring to be a medical doctor may be forced to rethink and pursue a career with better pay which is solely politics in Nigeria. This is just my opinion, who do you think is to be blamed?
