Nairaland GeneralEnextgen Wireless Breaks Down How 5G Network Works by Paulswaggz(op): 9:50pm On Apr 06, 2020
Fifth Generation Wireless (5G) is the term used to describe the next-generation of mobile networks beyond LTE mobile networks which is engineered to increase the speed and responsiveness of wireless networks.
The backbone of the 5G standard comprises low-, mid- and high-band spectrum. 5G networks operate on different frequencies with potential peak speeds as high as 20 gigabits per second (Gbps) and millimetre-wave (20-60 GHz) at the low and high ends of the spectrum. In Summary the 5G technology provides internet speed of 10 to 100 times faster than 4G!

However, the 5G use of millimetreWave has a few drawbacks: Because it’s so high-frequency, the waves don’t travel long distances.

It has low coverage area and building (even glass) penetration is poor. That means a device operating on an mmWave-based network will need to be extremely close to a 5G node to catch a signal. This is the reason why there is (and will be) massive deployment of 5G towers around the neighbourhood nearer us (unlike 3G/4G sites).

5G been live in several cities globally since 2019. It has been deployed in 378 Cities across 34 Countries.

However, in the last few days, misinformation, accusation and counter-accusations have been circulating across social media, with some individuals even linking the next generation of technology to the recent spread of Coronavirus.

These commentators failed to establish how Monaco the first country in Europe to set up a 5G mobile phone network on July 9, 2019; built using technology from Chinese tech giant Huawei, yet it is among the countries with lowest cases of Coronavirus.

A telecoms analyst puts it this way: “Monaco is reputed as a wealthy country of about 40,000 residents but noted for $2.1 million per capita income. At the moment, Monaco has recorded 66 cases of COVID-19, 1 death and 3 recoveries. If 5G deployment correlates with COVID-19, Monaco ought to have disappeared from the face of the Earth”.

General description of 5G by Enext Wireless Inc.

So, can we settle with the conspiracy theorists’ hypotheses?

Well, the President of Enex Wireless Inc., Engineer Remi Adeyeye, in a chat with TechEconomy.ng gave general description of 5G thus:

“The Third Generation Partnership Project (3GPP) identify wireless radio frequency telecommunications networks by ‘generations’ (G’s).

“The first generation was based (1G) was based on analog communication. The second (2G) was based on analog for the United States and digital for most of the rest of the world.

“The third generation (3G) was based on digital globally with different digitalization techniques (CDMA) for the United States and a few other countries than most of Europe and the rest of the world (WCDMA or UMTS).

“4G was the first standard accepted uniformly globally. Its core network derived primarily from the UMTS core. However, its radio interface was rather unique, and it uses the well-known Internet Protocol (IP) standard for connecting to the public internet. It was defined for deployment in frequency ranges lower than 6 GHz.

“5G uses enhancements to some of the same technologies used for the air interface part of 4G. Its main distinguishing feature is that it allows the same communication network (5G) to be used for serving many different needs – massive broadband, very high density of users, ability of non-human devices (things) to communicate and satisfaction of fast interactive communications needs.

“It creates a means for any desired type of communication to occur from any point on earth. In order to accomplish these objectives, it covers frequencies from those currently used for the other G’s (1G, 2G, 3G and 4G) along with additional frequencies in the previously unused very high frequency ranges.

“As such while “5G” does not pose any more danger to human health than the other Gs, it might not be unreasonable that some people worry about the effect of the higher frequencies not previously used for mobile communications on human health. However, experts in radiation absorption and other relevant fields have concluded that 5G does not pose health risks even at those millimeter wave frequencies.

“The design of 5G was to continue the process of allowing wireless communications to meet the needs of human development, not to kill human beings or threaten their health. 5G has now been deployed in substantial parts of the United States, China and Europe and almost everywhere in South Korea.

He said that as for Nigeria, 4G coverage footprint is small, its quality is poor and the future of 5G is unknown.
