ABUJA – Signs that ex-president Olusegun Obasanjo subtly amassed support for the election of General Mohammadu Buhari as the Nigeria’s next president and also wants him to succeed in office became evident Thusday when he handed over a report of a strategic development plan to Buhari. The reports contained templates that would assist the incoming government to rapidly achieve its objectives of taking the nation a notch higher. Top on the list were Education, Power sector, Economy, Security and Infrastructure. The development followed a research work embarked upon by the Centre for Human Security of the Olusegun Obasanjo Presidential Library on major social challenges facing Nigeria 4 months ago. The event which took place at the Buhari Support Organization, BSO’s office in Abuja featured the chairman, governing board of the Centre for Human Security of Obasanjo Presidential Library, Professor Akin Mabogunje, who was incidentally the chairman of the committee, former Minister of Finance and Committees vice chairman, Dr. Kalu Idika Kalu who present volumes of the report to Buhari and Dr. Christopher Kolade who headed the power committee. Speaking to Journalists at the end of the brief ceremony that was held behind closed doors, Mabogunje said the report contained policy documents that would help the president-elect restructure Nigeria, revealing that Buhari was full of thanks for the documents. He said: “Centre for Human Security of the Olusegun Obasanjo Presidential Liberary has being working on a number of critical issues for the development of this country and they have now sent a delegation of those who’ve been involved with the preparation of those policy documents to talk to the president-elect and get him to appreciate what is being done to help his administration. That’s why we are here. “We’ve looked at education, security, economy, power and Infrastructure. Those are the areas we’ve made recommendations and which we hope the new administration will be able to work on. “He (Buhari) was very happy that we’ve been thinking about how to help him hit the ground running and he expressed his appreciation for what we’ve been doing.” Giving details of the reports, Dr. Kolade explained the long, medium and short terms goals of the report. According to him, the strategic plan hoped to raise the country’s power generation to 10,000 MW within a short period of time. Expanding thoughts on the development also, the Buhari’s media spokesperson, Mallam Garba Shehu said “the whole idea was that Obasanjo set up his own think- tank with the aim of carrying out a study on challenges facing the country in five key areas of Education, Power sector, Economy, Security and Infrastructure. The study was commissioned four months ago so that the outcome will be made available to the incoming administration after the election.” He also stated that the president-elect expressed gratitude to Obasanjo for their kind gesture, however regretting that the outgoing regime of president Goodluck Jonathan had not done anything close to that. “An appreciative President-elect expressed gratitude to Obasanjo and his team, describing their intervention as a great impetus for the incoming government. Buhari regretted that the out-going government that is supposed to give him tips on how to take-off has done nothing so far. He thanked the Obasanjo for their gesture, assuring them that his incoming administration will be needing their advice as time goes on”, Shehu said. Mallam Ahmed Joda, chairman of Buhari transition committee refused to speak in his capacity as the transition committee chairman when asked by Journalists to make input. “I am here not in the capacity of the chairman of the transition committee. I am here because I am a chairman of one of the committees of the centre that consider security issues at the Obasanjo centre for human security”, he said. http://www.vanguardngr.com/2015/05/obasanjo-hands-over-report-on-strategic-devt-plan-to-buhari/ |
Elated by the successful outcome of the last general elections, former Head of State, General Yakubu Gowon, Thursday, said that despite the assertions of naysayers and uncertified futurologists who predicted the break-up of Nigeria in 2015, the effective prayers of the people of faith moved the hands of God to intervene in the affairs of the country. In his remark, at a lecture entitled: “The Church and Nigerian Nation: Impact, Challenges and the Way Forward,” to mark the 60th Anniversary of the Foursquare Gospel Church in Nigeria (FGCN), held at the National Headquarters of the Church in Lagos, Gowon who chaired the occasion said, that Nigeria has remained together should surprise no one because God has given the nation the assurance that He would always answer Nigerians whenever they call upon Him. Recalling the events that led to the civil war in 1967-1970, he jokingly said that his colleague Chukwuemeka Ojukwu never believed he (Gowon) would call out Nigeria’s fighting forces to fight against the Biafran side in order to keep Nigeria one. According to Gowon, the Bible has consistently been his companion from his childhood till date, adding that his colleague, Ojukwu had said then, he (Gowon) was a Christian, who carries around suitcase with a Bible inside, and so wouldn’t like to call out the Nigerian Federal forces to war in order to stop the secession. Gowon said: “All my life, from childhood to this present day, the Bible has consistently been my companion. I discovered quite early that every word of God contained therein speak to every situation in the life of every man or woman, great or small and to occurrences in every nation, big or small. Since these words are self-evidently true, they are reliable and unfailing. This should surprise no one because God Himself gave us the assurance that He would always answer when we call upon Him. “You will agree that, across time, happenings in our fatherland have almost always ensured that people of faith across denominations in Christendom and in Islam kept unending vigil for the love of country. Let me share a joke of what happened before the civil war in 1967-1970. I think it was my colleague Emeka Ojukwu that said I know Jack, he is a Christian, who always carries a suitcase around with the Bible inside. He wouldn’t like to fight. Unfortunately, he was proved wrong. However, it was through the grace of God, that we were able to keep Nigeria one. “It was the prayers of people of God and the bravery of our fighting forces that kept this country together. After the civil war, it was wisdom from God to willing and obedient hearts that helped us to initiate and implement programmes that best served the interest of the people. It was God that helped to stem the tide of bloody coups in Nigeria so that we can enjoy democracy today. “Even when naysayers wrote off this nation and various uncertified futurologists predicted the break up of Nigeria by 2015 as a bye- product of the recently concluded general elections, the effective prayers of people of faith moved the hands of God and He once more intervened in the affairs of our dear country.” He added: “I was in Addis Ababa for a conference and when the news came that the incumbent president had congratulated his opponent, everyone at the conference was happy and they started congratulating me and other Nigerians at the conference. Let us imagine what would have happened if President Goodluck Jonathan had refused to do that.” Speaking further, Gowon, who congratulated Foursquare Gospel Church on the occasion of its Diamond Jubilee celebrations, however said religious leaders in Nigeria must stand in the gap between temporal power and the people and must never cease to speak the truth to those in power, adding that religious leaders must positively advise leaders on the way forward and must be fair and honest in their dealings with both sides. He further said they must be conciliatory, not condemnatory and help the leadership to correctly interpret policies to the people. According to the retired General, this will ensure that the polity is not heated up for no reason than the protection of the self- interest of a few powerful elite members of the society. In his lecture, the Guest Speaker and Vice Chancellor, McPherson University (McU), Seriki-Sotayo, Ogun State, Prof. Adeniyi Agunbiade, who noted that the role of the Church and the Nigerian State should be complimentary, urged all Nigerians to put hands on deck with the President- elect, Maj-Gen. Muhammadu Buhari and his Vice, Prof. Yemi Osinbajo to bring about the much needed change in Nigeria. According to Agunbiade, “It’s never too late for the Church to lay the right foundation for leadership. The Church must partner with government in the social advocacy to instil moral value and honesty among Nigerians.” Meanwhile, the General Overseer, FGCN, disclosed that within six decades of the church’s existence, it has been positioned as one of the country’s leading Pentecostal movements, highly regarded for its scrupulous adherence to the immutability and sanctity of the word of God. http://www.vanguardngr.com/2015/05/ojukwu-never-believed-ill-go-to-war-over-biafra-gowon/ |

ABUJA—The inauguration of the President-elect, General Muhammadu Buhari would be low key, the chairman, All Progressives Congress, APC Transition Committee Chairman, Chief Timipre Sylva said, yesterday. Speaking to journalists in Abuja, Sylva cited the dwindling economy as the reason for the decision. Though he was not categorical about the number of Heads of State anticipated to grace the occasion on May 29, Sylva, however, said that a number of them would come. He said: “There are no challenges, we are planning very well and I think we are going to give Nigerians a compact inauguration. “We are not going to be flamboyant. We think that this country cannot afford a flamboyant ceremony this time because the economy is not in good shape right now. So we are actually planning to give Nigerians a sanitized and compact event which will be a source of pride to Nigerians. “We have not gotten all the confirmations but we have already gotten from some countries. He also dismissed the insinuation that there may be rift between the incoming and the outgoing government. “There is no problem, it is just politics. What happened is that they were on the wrong side and they lost. We are on the right side and we won. And so, the government will have to continue and just like we were there when they were governing, they also have to be there when we are governing the country,” he said. On the allegation that he was carrying a corruption baggage and as such was not qualified to be in Buhari’s cabinet, Sylva, who was also the former governor of Bayelsa State, expressed shock that his detractors had already convicted him before the courts would give their judgment on the matter. He said he was innocent of all the charges, believing that the courts would eventually quash the charges. “I will be shocked to hear that. Maybe, those peddling the allegation are the courts and they have already convicted me. We have courts in the land and you know that PDP is the party of impunity. Today if I pick you up and I charge you to court on charges of corruption, does that convict you? It is only the court that can convict you and that is why we have rule of law. “A situation where people just pick you up and say you’re corrupt just to persecute you, does not augur well for our democracy. I have been vindicated politically and I will be vindicated by the court also because I ran the best government in Bayelsa state, a better government than what the outgoing President ran in Bayelsa state. “I can assure you that I am going to come out clean at the end of the day from the charges against me.” http://www.vanguardngr.com/2015/05/buharis-inauguration-expect-low-key-ceremony-apc-transition-cttee-chair/ |

ABUJA – Former British Prime Minister, Mr. Tony Blair on Wednesday assured President-elect, General Mohammadu Buhari of the support of the major democracies of the world, especially Britain to enable him succeed. Blair gave the assurance during his congratulatory visit to Buhari in Abuja. Speaking to Journalists after a closed door meeting, the former PM hailed the credibility and the tranquillity that defined the last general elections, saying that Nigeria and her people had earned the respect of the international community. He expressed confidence in the incoming government of Buhari, saying that it was determined to achieve its set objectives. He said: “In the last few weeks, Nigeria has earned respect through out the whole world. There is enormous support for Nigeria now in the international community. The support takes into consideration the challenges that lie ahead and there is great confidence in the country. “This is an election which took place in a way which the country showed the majority of democracies the spirit and character of its people and in the President elect and Vice President elect. “It is a leadership that I know is determined to do its best for the country. Obviously, the future and destiny of Nigeria lies in the hand of its people. “I just want to say to the President elect that there is tremendous support for you and the country at this moment and all of us. In what ever way we can stand ready to support you and help you. It is a moment of great challenges which bother on the life of the people as well as their security and so on. “If the same spirit and character that defined the election can be taken through these coming years to address the challenges, I think we can all have great confidence in the times ahead. “Thank you very much for giving me the opportunity to see you again here in Nigeria and wish you and your team the best in the times head”. http://www.vanguardngr.com/2015/05/the-world-is-behind-you-blair-tells-buhari/ |
