BENEATH THE SURFACE

A short story by Bayo Onuwaje

Kola and Lola's marriage was marred by a significant issue: their differing libidos. While Kola rarely felt the urge for sex, Lola's desires often went unfulfilled, creating tension in their home.

The situation took a drastic turn when Lola found solace in Kola's younger brother, Dare, who had moved in with them after completing his National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) program. Dare's intention was to stay temporarily while he searched for a job and planned for his own apartment.

However, as time passed, Lola and Dare's secret affair blossomed, resulting in Lola's pregnancy. She deceived Kola into believing he was the father, and he was overjoyed at the prospect of having a child.

This scenario repeated itself twice more, with Lola giving birth to two more children, all fathered by Dare. As the family grew, Kola struggled to provide for them, leading him to seek desperate measures.

In a shocking turn of events, Kola was introduced to a local priest who advised him to perform a ritual using his children as a solution to his financial woes.

Consumed by anger and betrayal, Kola refused to back down from the ritual after the priest revealed the shocking truth: the children were not his biological offspring. Blinded by rage, Kola proceeded with the ritual, using his wife's children as sacrifices.

The first ritual was successful, and Kola's wealth grew exponentially. However, his greed led him to repeat the ritual, sacrificing his second child. The third child, however, was saved by Kola's elder sister, a devout Christian, and her husband, who protected the child from the demonic forces.

As time passed, the demon grew angry, realizing it had been deprived of its next victim. In a shocking twist, the demon turned on Kola, torturing him mercilessly. Overwhelmed by guilt and pain, Kola confessed to his heinous crimes, revealing that he had sacrificed his own children upon discovering they were not his biological offspring.

Lola, too, was forced to confess, confirming that the children were fathered by Dare, Kola's younger brother. The consequences of their actions were severe: Kola descended into madness, roaming the streets, while Lola was rejected by her in-laws and banished from their home. Dare, meanwhile, was disowned by his family.

In the end, justice was served, but at a terrible cost. The destruction caused by Kola's and Lola's selfish desires left a trail of devastation, serving as a haunting reminder of the devastating consequences of their actions.

The End.
