Many years ago, you could disconnect a battery cable while the engine was running to test the alternator in your car. If the engine continued to run, that proved the alternator was working. But it’s a test you should never try on a modern car because they are equipped with computers and electronics. Disconnecting a battery cable while the engine is running causes the alternator to spike a 25-125-volt surge within 40 milliseconds after cable removal. That voltage spike can’t damage anything in an old non-computerized car, but it can instantly fry the many computers and expensive electronics used on all modern cars. Some people put extra large sound systems in their cars to give a bigger subwoofer effect. The problem with this is that not only do some people find loud music annoying, these big audio systems can actually make your alternator and charging system work overtime, and as a result, will rapidly drain your battery. Not only will the battery have to be replaced frequently, the alternator can fail prematurely as well. Since the alternator keeps the battery charged, the car might not run right or may stop running altogether. But, if you insist on installing one of these audio systems, you might want to consider also installing a high-output alternator. Anything less than a quarter tank of fuel can be considered too low. If you drive your car with low fuel, it can cause premature fuel pump failure. That’s because the fuel acts like a coolant for your pump, and if there’s too little fuel in your car, not enough cooling will be provided for the pump and it’ll overheat. Replacing it can cost quite a lot. Also driving around with a low fuel level can cause the pump to suck in debris from the bottom of the tank. The particles can then wear out the pump impeller and cause you to have low fuel pressure which in turn will end up damaging the pump and other components of the fuel supply system. Many tow trucks make the mistake of towing cars with the wheels down on the road rolling along with the truck. This is a bad idea especially with the drive wheels of an automatic transmission car. Towing it with the drive wheels down signals to the car that the transmission is being “run.” The problem with that is that it’s being run without proper lubrication. That’s because when the engine isn’t running, the torque converter doesn’t pump pressurized fluid through the transmission. It’s like running the engine without an oil pump, and the results can be just as ugly leading to damage to the transmission.
