A wrong way to park an automatic transmission car can damage the gearbox and send you looking for a replacement sooner than is expected. This is a common mistake many drivers make on regular basis without knowing it. When the car is stopped many people push directly from “D” to “P” then apply the handbrake and turn off the engine. This parking is not correct. Pushing directly into the “P” gear puts the stress of the whole car on the “P” locking hole not on the handbrake. Viscosity is very important because that is what lubricates the system which prevents friction that generates heat. But also looking at one of the properties of ATF, it has detergent which is responsible for cleaning the system, making it not necessary for flushing as often as PSF.

The main issue is viscosity.

PSF is thicker than ATF. PSF is subjected1 to higher pressure which means higher temperatures than ATF, so PSF needs to be able to maintain its viscosity with increased temp.

ATF will work but because of heat expect rapid wear and tear when the heat makes it too light to protect moving parts.

It’s common to see automatic transmission fluid (ATF) used in place of power steering fluid known as SF, but is this safe? In order to understand this better we have to know the functions of these fluids in both the power-steering system and transmission system. Any vehicle with a hydraulic power-steering system needs power steering fluid. It works with the power steering pump to make turning the steering wheel smoother. Although the power steering has its unique properties, but there is a reason why ATF remains popular. We will compare the various properties of these fluids to fully understand why they are both important.
