Did you know that;
• Your B.Eng project makes up 50% of your regular final year GPA ?
• Your undergraduate project work could be a selling point for securing your first job?
• You could become wealthy and indeed famous if you develop a novel idea/innovation?
Every project answers the following questions Termed, WWH
• W = what do you want to do?..........ie Your project topic
• W = Why do you want to do it?.......ie Aim and Objectives/Relevance of the project
• H = How do you want to do it? ………ie your Methodology.
Objectives of this work
• Bringing out what doing B.Eng. project work entails.
• Clearly explaining what is required of the student and supervisors.
• Explain how students can go about the project work.
• Attempt to answer some FAQ’s about undergraduate project .
B.Eng Project (What is it?)
Undergraduate project provides students an opportunity to put to use the knowledge they have acquired over the course of their years in the university.
What are the things One can do?
• Completion of an old idea:
– to review what has been done,
– how it was done,
– where the former author stopped and
– Where he/she wants to key in and complete it.
• Improvement of an old work:
– to explain the need for the improvement,
– give reasons for the improvement,
– show areas to be improved and
– then make the actual improvement
• Criticizing an existing work:
– This entails writing and analyzing existing systems bringing out the faults of the work and
– proposing better ways to do the work.
– The student may not necessarily repeat the work but must do a proper academic exercise of it.
• New idea/concept: The student could come up with a new idea or concept which had not been worked on in the department and then develop it.
How do I begin?
• Planning stage
• Execution stage
• Testing stage
How do I begin? – Planning Stage
This is the period to :
• think about your idea and be sure of what you want
• and then plan how to go about it.
At this stage, the basic questions to be asked will be:
– How do you want to approach the project?
– What is the nature of the work?
– When do you want to start the work?
– What does the work entail- design and construction, analysis of a system, experimentation, etc?
– How much in terms of time and money will it involve?
– What are the problems you envisage to encounter in the course of the project?
– How do you plan to overcome those problems?
– What do you want to achieve in the long run?
– When the student has answered these questions then, he/she would have a good foundation to carry out the project. This will also show that he/she is focused on what the project is all about
How do I begin? - Execution Stage
This is the stage where the actual work is carried out.
How do I begin? – Testing Stage
• Testing Stage:
– Begins during/after the execution stage.
– Test the work and generate results.
– Study the behavior of the product and record the results.
– Carefully analyze the results here at this stage.
Choice of Supervisor
• Choose your supervisor based on the published list of projects available or based on who appeals to your desired topic.
• At all stages of the project work, liaise with your supervisor. Decide what to work on along with your supervisor.

– Work yet to be done and how the student intends to accomplish that to meet the deadline of the defense.

– Could you describe the operation of your work?
– What are the guiding principles behind your design?
– What theories and equations did you apply to get there?
