The Federal Government, Friday, directed banks, insurance and financial institutions to suspend on-going retrenchment in the sector. This is contained in a statement signed by the Minister of Labour and Employment, Chris Ngige, and made available to newsmen in Abuja. Nigerian youthsNigerian youths “Following spate of petitions and complaints from stakeholders in the banking, insurance and financial institutions, I hereby direct the suspension of the on-going retrenchment pending the outcome of the conciliatory meetings in the industry. “This is as a result of the apprehension by my office of the various disputes in the sector in accordance and in compliance with the provisions of the labour laws of Nigeria,” it said. The statement said that the decision was further predicated on the fact that the continued retrenchment and redundancy by the sector were jeopardizing the outcome of the re conciliatory and mediatory processes undertaken by the ministry. “In this wise, all the retrenchments and redundancies done in the last four months and all proposed ones should be put on hold. “Pending the outcome of the proposed stakeholders’ summit for the banking, insurance and financial institutions’ employers and employees, slated for the first week of July 2,’’ the statement read in part. However, Mr. Ngige advised all parties in the interest of industrial peace and harmony to maintain the status-quo ante-belum. Several banks have fired thousands of workers, amid an economic crisis. This week, Ecobank has reportedly sacked about thousand staff. (NAN Read more at: http://www.vanguardngr.com/2016/06/fg-directs-banks-to-suspend-retrenchment/ |
Counsel to Chief Olisa Metuh, the embattled former National Publicity Secretary of the People’s Democractic Party, PDP, Barr. Ben Nwosu, has described as a hoax, a recent petition to the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC, for the anti-graft agency to invite and probe ex-President Goodluck Jonathan on issues relating to the ongoing trial of Metuh. EFCC operativesEFCC operatives The petition was sent to the EFCC by Barr. Osuagwu Ugochukwu, on behalf of a former member of the Enugu State House of Assembly, Ikenna Ejezie. Nwosu in a statement on Saturday, said: “Our attention has been drawn to reports in the media regarding a petition by one Barrister Osuagwu Ugochukwu claiming to be representing a non- existent former member of the Enugu State House of Assembly, given as Ikenna Ejezie, and asking the EFCC to invite and interrogate ex-President Goodluck Jonathan on issues relating to the on-going trial of our client, Chief Olisa Metuh. “Whereas we note that Barrister Ugochukwu has links with the EFCC and had appeared on behalf of the commission while representing its former Chairman, Ibrahim Larmode at a hearing in the National Assembly last year, the claim that the petition is on behalf of a former member of Enugu State House of Assembly is false as no such individual ever served in that legislative house. “However, we have thoroughly studied the petition and for the avoidance of doubt, wish to state as follows. 1. The petition is not really against ex-President Jonathan but actually a calculated attempt targeted at swaying public sentiments and the judiciary against our client in this orchestrated and well-funded media trial. The idea is to sway the minds of the public and the court to get a conviction based more on media trial than the laws of the land. 2. It is clear that their assertion is neither based on the statement our client made at the EFCC nor on the evidence placed before the court, which has clearly established our client’s case that the N400 million approved by the former president was not for personal and private use. 3. The fact that this matter is subjudice should have impressed upon the petitioners and their backers that publicizing such hoax is actually an affront to the judiciary except it is intended to cow the judiciary. 4. We are astonished as to how the petitioners would have referred to our client’s statement as a confession and a criminal statement. 5. We are also not unmindful of the fact that this appears to be a vendetta by some persons to cast our client in the mold of an already guilty individual just waiting for sentencing. 6.It is therefore obvious that the sole intention of this petition is to distort our client’s defense, which has so far been honestly and sincerely presented before the court 7. Finally, we state that we support the present fight against corruption and which is needed at this time of our national development, however this should not be used by some persons as a ploy to settle personal scores,” the statement added Read more at: http://www.vanguardngr.com/2016/05/petition-efcc-jonathan-hoax-metuhs-counsel/ |
Abuja – The German Ambassador to Nigeria, Amb. Michael Zenner, has said Germany-Nigeria Solar Power project at the University of Ibadan will commence this year. Zenner said this in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Abuja on Thursday. He said the project, which cost 17,670 dollars (approx. N3.52 million), is expected to provide 10 megawatts of power supply to the university. The envoy said that the ground breaking ceremony would hold between June and July. “ The solar project for the University of Ibadan is a solar project we have been planning together with Nigeria partners for some time. “It is part of the Nigeria-Germany energy partnership which has existed since 2008. “Within this whole field of energy partnership, and the German-Nigeria Binational Commission, the project of the University of Ibadan is a project which is very promising and I hope it will start this year. GEsolar “We plan, after all the conditions are fulfilled, the ground breaking ceremony next month or hopefully in July. “The idea is that the University of Ibadan will, by the end of the day, use only energy produced by solar power.” Zenner also explained that the university would gain several advantages from the solar project, adding that the project would be replicated in the Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria, Kaduna State. “ This has several advantages, first it is a lighthouse project for solar energy in the framework of the cooperation between Germany and Nigeria in the energy and power sector. “Secondly, it helps the University of Ibadan save a lot of diesel; and thirdly, it is a training tool for students who study engineering. “ This (project) will cover the need of the University of Ibadan; we also plan this as well with the Ahmadu Bello University. “The partner of this on the Nigerian side is the Ministry of Education; the financial means exists that it can be done in Ibadan as well as in Ahmadu Bello University.” He also said that several other energy projects between Germany and Nigeria were ongoing, adding that field studies were being conducted in some states to provide alternative sources of power. “We have within the framework of our power cooperation different other projects; there is one energy project which was agreed in the last meeting of the energy partnership in February. “It is solar power project in Katsina, the Kankia solar project which is 125 megawatts. “In the northern part of Niger State, we have already set up a small demonstration of solar power plant. “The idea is that in rural areas which are not connected to the national power grid, solar power or hydropower or winds, if feasible, can generate the power these areas need. “By the end of the day, if one state produces surplus and they are connected to the national power grid, they can even contribute to and sell their surplus to the grid.(NAN) http://www.vanguardngr.com/2016/05/university-of-ibadan-to-run-on-solar-power-soon/ |

The controversy over the monthly salary of a Nigerian lawmaker has finally been laid to rest with a formal disclosure of what the legislators earn. The National Institute of Legislative Studies, NILS, apparently worried by growing public outcry against the Nigerian lawmakers, on Friday released a set of documents, showing what constitutes the earnings of the 109 Senators and 360 members of the Nigerian House of Representatives. National Assembly National Assembly The documents, which were made available to Vanguard in Abuja on Friday, indicated that the Nigerian lawmakers earn perhaps one of the least salaries among legislators in the world, as against the notion that their pay was outrageous. Apart from releasing global comparative figures drawn from nine countries, the NILS also gave a breakdown of what constitutes the monthly take-home pay of each Nigerian lawmaker. The figure shows that while a Nigerian Senator gets an annual basic salary of N2,026,400,00 a member of the Nigerian House of Representatives goes home with N1,985,212, 50 per year. But beyond that a Senator takes home a bouquet of allowances which hike their salary to N12, 902, 360.00 while their House of Representatives counterpart goes home with N9,525,985.50 annually. Thus, for the four-year tenure which the lawmaker stay in the NASS, the Nigerian government spends a total of N1, 406,357,240.00 as basic salary on the 109 Senators and N3,428,994,780.00 on the 360 members of the House of Representatives. The breakdown of the allowances are on: Vehicle fuelling/maintenance, Constituency, Domestic Staff, Personal Assistant, Entertainment, Recess, Utilities, Newspaper/Periodicals, Houses Maintenance, Wardrobe, Estacode, Duty Tour, which attract more money available to the lawmakers than their basic salaries. Beyond that, the lawmakers earn special amount in every four-year period on Accommodation, vehicle loan, furniture, and severance allowance, which make every Senator to pocket N24,090,000.00 and a House of Representatives member to go home with N23,822,00.00 within the same period. Thus for every four year which a lawmaker stays in the NASS, the Federal Government spends N2,625, 810,000.00 on accommodation, vehicle loans, furniture and severance gratuity on the 109 senators and N8,575,920,000.00 on the 360 House of Representatives members. This payment brings the total expenditure of the government to N33, 992, 360 for the senators and N33,347, 985, 50 on the members of the HoR. The figures are lower when compared to what their counterparts in eight other countries earn. But the monies Nigerian lawmakers earn from their oversight functions and other sources make them big earners. A global comparison released by the NILS shows that lawmakers in the Philippines earn the highest annual basic salary of $4, 497,957, followed by their counterparts in the United States of America where a Senator goes home with $3,409,422 while a member of the US House of Representatives takes $1,429,909 home annually. This is followed by lawmakers in Kenya who earn $968,013 per annum followed by their counterparts in Australia who take home $646,230 while those in the United Kingdom go home with £494,285.43. The list is followed by lawmakers from India, who earn $474,484, Singapore with $253,469, and Tanzania with $230,961. It will be recalled that the Nigerian government has been spending a total of N150 billion per year on the NASS but has been forced to step it down to N120 billion this year following rising outcry that the lawmakers are taking too much from the Federation Account leaving little for other sectors http://www.vanguardngr.com/2015/10/revealed-at-last-salary-and-allowances-of-nass-members/ |

The Oodua People’s Congress said it would pull out its men from guarding all Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation pipelines nationwide from Monday evening. Spokesman for Gani Adams Faction of the congress, Mr. Yinka Oguntimehin, said this in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria in Lagos on Monday. Oguntimehin said this became necessary because the corporation had yet to start paying for the work its men are doing. He said the corporation was, as part of the contractual agreement entered into, three months ago, expected to start payment. The spokesman said the OPC personnel had continued to guard the pipelines with the belief that the corporation would pay as promised. “When we were given the contract on March 15, it was agreed that they will release money for the OPC personnel for effective protection of the NNPC pipelines nationwide. “We lost one man last month because of the activities of the vandals here in Lagos, while some of our men were arrested in the course of protecting the pipeline. “We had told them to release some of our money before the new administration took over, but they kept promising us. “Enough is enough, three months have passed since our members started monitoring the pipeline, and we have fulfilled our part of the agreement. “By 10pm today, our personnel will move out of the NNPC pipelines nationwide and this applies to other groups in the country,” he said. The federal government had, in March, awarded a multi-billion Naira contract to the OPC to secure NNPC pipelines in the South-West zone of the country. http://www.punchng.com/news/opc-pulls-out-of-nnpc-pipeline-surveillance/ |
Copied this from a friend's wall: I think Late Gen. Sani Abacha will make a great president. During his time, Naira was stable and petrol price was #11.00. Apart from his human right abuses and extra judicial killings, he was a great general. Boko Haram will not even try to exist. The Nigerian Army was ranked among the world's best. Our borders and territorial waters were secured. I never heard or read about illegal oil bunkering on a large scale or some payment to some cabals. He was the cabal. He put Obasanjo, Diya and all other army generals in the gulag. Our Secret Service displayed a high level of Intelligence gathering. It was staffed with seasoned agents like Sergeant Rogers, remember him? Major General Al Mustapha, his chief of staff, was a diligent soldier. Oh I forgot to mention Kerosene was expensive and we cooked with saw dust but we witnessed unprecedented Federal government road constructions all over the country. They were good roads done by Julius Berger. There were less abandoned projects. Civil servants were punctual. There was a well disciplined citizenry. In fact, musicians like Killington Ayinla and others sang in protest against the hardship we were facing and Abacha did not jail him. I should also mention that General Buhari, in all his integrity, served meritoriously under General Sani Abacha as PTF chairman. Although about estimated $5Billion disappeared under his watch. Buhari did not steal a kobo right? He was only silent while they were robbing us dry. Apart from poor funding of public education, Maryam Abacha was helping poor women to start businesses. I wonder why a lot of people took to the streets celebrating his unfortunate demise. Late General Abacha would have been a great civilian president if he had succeeded in his plan to transition to a civilian president. He was a thief but a good one. This is what revisionist history can do. I lived through Abacha's regime and we were poor and oppressed, no matter how they package a candidate, those who experienced his regime will never forget. I hope our eyes are open as we approach 2015. |

pazienza:I was referring to JOHESU in my comment not the graduate nurses' association...and I'm not a nurse. |
The association is too amorphous for it to function as a unit...the center will soon give way... |
The Honourable Minister of Health, Federal Ministry of Health, Federal Secretariat Complex, Ahmadu Bello Way,Abuja, Nigeria. Sir, RE: JOHESU STRIKE; PLEASE NOTE THAT OUR ASSOCIATION IS NOT PART OF JOHESU AND OUR MEMBERS ARE THEREFORE NOT PART OF THE ONGOING JOHESU STRIKE. Preamble: Our Association (comprising only of Nurses with at least the First Degree in Nursing, i.e. B.Sc. Nursing/Bachelor of Nursing Science [B.N.Sc.]) brings you candid fraternal greetings from our pragmatic and peace-loving members. Please, kindly recall that our association had through our letter, Ref. No.:UGONSA/014/Vol.11/010 dated 11th October, 2014,notified your office of the successful incorporation of our association with the Corporate Affairs Commission (CAC) in line with the Companies and Allied Matters Act, No.1, 1990. Kindly also recall that in the letter, we expressed our unalloyed determination and commitment to liaise with the Federal Ministry of Health to achieve its vision of making our healthcare delivery system one of the global best through the transformation agenda of the President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria. In pursuit of this noble cause, we wish to bring the following to your notice. We write your Office this day to formally notify you that our association is not part of JOHESU and therefore our members are not part of the misguided and treacherous strike embarked on by the members of JOHESU. It is the belief of our association that the various groups in the health sector can achieve whatever aspirations they are pursuing without resorting to gang-ups in the guise of industrial action especially now that we are blessed with a listening and considerate regime at the Federal Government. All the previous demands of our association that were met by the Federal Government were not achieved through industrial action and we shall achieve our current demands, which among other things include INTERNSHIP FOR THE FRESH UNIVERSITY GRADUATES OF NURSING SCIENCE AND THEIR PROPER PLACEMENT IN THE SCHEMES OF SERVICE without embarking on any strike. That the Ministry of Health has acknowledged that it is an aberration to place University Graduates of Nursing Science on GL 08 (CONHESS 07) entry point post-NYSC whereas their counterparts in Pharmacy,Physiotherapy,Medical Laboratory Science, etc ( which are five-year programmes in the University for the First Degree with the same entry requirements as Nursing Science) are placed on GL 10 (CONHESS 09) entry point Post –NYSC is a clear indication that the current regime is sincerely a listening one and having put up measures to address it is another demonstration of sincerity of commitment to addressing genuine issues by the current regime. That the Ministry of health has, as well, forwarded a memorandum to the National Council on Establishment (NCE) for approval of internship for the fresh Graduates of the Bachelor of Nursing Science (BNSc) degree programme without our members embarking on any strike equally shows that the Government is totally committed to meeting feasible and lawful demands of any group via legally established channels. While we appeal to your honourable Office to collaborate with all concerned authorities to expedite action on the release of circular for internship and proper placement of the fresh Graduates of the BNSc degree programme, we enjoin all the unions in the health sector, especially JOHESU, to emulate the way of our association and shun the toga of brigandage in the name of industrial action. gnan We equally enjoin all the unions in the health sector to support the transformation agenda of the presidency which includes among other things the plan to launch our healthcare delivery system to an enviable position in the global ranking of healthcare delivery systems. It is a crime, to our belief, for any healthcare provider to abandon the unconditional oath of saving human lives which we all swore to uphold because of some selfish gratifications as members of JOHESU are currently doing. We therefore condemn this needless strike in its entirety. While we appeal to Government to always hasten up the satisfaction of genuine demands of the different Health Associations to give all and sundry sense of belonging in the healthcare sector, we reaffirm our unalloyed commitment of assisting the Government realize its transformation agenda in the health sector through dynamic and sustainable professional services of our members. Attached with this letter are copies of press releases and public notices dissociating our Association and its members from JOHESU and its perfidious and misguided industrial action. Thank you. The Joint Health Sector Union (JOHESU), a conglomerate of several health care associations in the health sector, will commence an indefinite strike action Wednesday. The National President of National Union of Allied Health Professional (NUAP), Felix Faniran, who is also the Vice President of JOHESU, disclosed this to Journalists Tuesday in Abuja. Also, the long lasting age-long battle between the JOHESU and the Nigeria Medical Association (NMA) on consultancy status has finally being laid to rest as the federal government has, on Thursday, formally given the health workers a circular to that effect. With this circular, from now forward, other health workers have the right to become consultants in their various fields. According to Faniran, “We held a meeting with the SGF on Thursday, the government only release one of the many circulars we told them to release. The one they release was the one in respect to consultancy status which we say they should correct which they have now corrected. “Other health care professionals are recognized as consultants and that it is their professional bodies that have the right to dictate who should be a consultant or not and not the Medical and Dental Council of Nigeria and that such people shall be qualified to receive specialist allowance. That is what we have gotten,” he explained. While giving reasons why the JOHESU will go for an indefinite strike from Wednesday, Faniran said. Regretted that: “All other issues, particularly, that our salary which was supposed to be adjusted on January this year in the same line with our colleagues –the NMA members, who have had their own adjusted and whose circulars have not only been issued, but they are already enjoying a new salary package, our circular is yet to be released. “We are in the same sector but they are enjoying new salary while we have not gotten the circular yet let alone implementing it. “Also, this is already November, budgets have been prepared in all institutions and ours have been prepared on old rate, so we can no longer wait. “Since the government don’t have an answer to this and the arrears of CONHESS 10 Skipping they also have no answer to it, they are just compiling the list whereas they have compiled this list long ago, it was supposed to be paid in 2013, they could not pay, we waited to 2014, they said it was not in budget for 2014 and that we have to wait till 2015, we are all tied of this rigmarolling. “The issue retirement age, we don’t need to ague on this one. There has been a government White Paper in 1981 that whatever is happening in the universities should be the same condition of service in the University Teaching Hospitals. So, since the university is already enjoying 65 to 70 years retirement, it should be made automatic to the University Teaching Hospitals, since they are sister institutions. “Despite our effort to convince them they refused and said they will wait till December when one committee will meet at state level. We are not working for the states. If the federal government has entered an agreement with us since May 2012, why can’t they issue circular to that effect. “So, having disagreed on all other issues, the entire unions, all the other four unions that made of the JOHESU have now decided to go on indefinite strike from Wednesday next week.” It would be recalled that NUAHP has been on strike since October 16. http://www.vanguardngr.com/2014/11/health-workers-begin-indefinite-strike-wednesday/ |

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) had approved additional 1,169 polling units for Zamfara, the Resident Electoral Commissioner, Alhaji Jibrin Zarewa, announced on Wednesday. Zarewa made this known in Gusau when he inaugurated a 11-member committee to review the location of the existing polling units and stations in Zamfara. He said that the aim was to make voting convenient and ensure nobody was disenfranchised. The resident electoral commissioner said that after considerable observations by INEC in all the states, approval was given for additional polling units according to the need of each state. “This led to the increase of polling units from 2,516 to 3,679 in Zamfara State,” he said. He said the committee, which would be chaired by the Secretary of the Local Commission, Alhaji Ahmed Zogirma, would be responsible for the citing of the new polling units. He noted that some polling units that had more than the required 500 voters would now be adequately taken care of by the increase in polling units. Zarewa said the polling units and stations would be situated within one kilometre radius for voter convenience. The commissioner said that no polling unit would be sited at places of worship, private residence, premises of traditional rulers and public buildings marked for demolition. He said the committee would submit its report in two weeks http://www.vanguardngr.com/2014/09/inec-approves-additional-1169-polling-units-for-zamfara/ |
